College Football Handicapping: Fresno State looks promising under DeRuyter

08.16.2012     02:52 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I think first-year head coach Tim DeRuyter walks into a pretty good situation at Fresno State. Under Pat Hill, the Bulldogs were consistent winners but could have been better had Hill tightened up the reigns some. The just-let-the-kids-play attitude no question helped when they were asked to step up in class. But with the amount of talent the Bulldogs had, there's really no excuse that under Hill they failed to finish better than third in the WAC from 2004-11.

Going back and looking at some of FSU's stats the last few years, the one that stands out was turnovers. From 2004-11, they were a combined -65 in turnover margin despite winning 56% of their games and posting five seasons of eight wins or better. And it wasn't just offensive miscues but more the inability to force turnovers. Over the last five years, no team in the country had as few takeaways as Fresno State (65). As a comparison, Air Force, where DeRuyter spent three seasons, posted 140 during that span.

Another thing that really deteriorated during Hill's last few seasons was the defense. And despite some injuries, I saw it more as a lack of effort and discipline. DeRuyter is the perfect Read more

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Expect short stint for Romo behind weak offensive line

Dallas at San Diego -3 O/U 37

Reports out of Dallas Cowboys camp has quarterback Tony Romo playing a limited amount of time in Saturday's game at San Diego. The team has reason to be cautious after the injury to tight end Jason Witten and the current mess along the offensive line.

Dallas Cowboys
2011 was another disappointing year for the Cowboys.  They outgained their opponents by 0.3 yards per play, and finished with a +4 turnover margin.  Yet once again, Dallas found ways to lose tight games, suffering five losses by six points or less.

The Cowboys finished the campaign with an 8-8 SU, mark, but a money-losing 5-10-1 ATS record against a middle-of-the-pack strength of schedule.  Despite some defensive shortcomings, the Cowboys went 10-6 to the Under.  And their late season struggles continued – the Cowboys have only two winning Decembers in the last 18 years; none since 2001.

2012 Issues: The Cowboys spent their offseason making moves that make it very clear that they feel that their window of opportunity is right now.  They brought in six potential new starters in free agency, and hired former Raiders and Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan to coordinate the offense.

Cowboys QB Tony Romo is now in his seventh year as the starter.  At 32 years old, Romo is coming off his best statistical season, and he’s got some decent weapons around him: Demarco Read more

College Football Gambling: Washington seeks turnaround with new defensive staff

08.16.2012     12:55 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Moving the football and putting up points on the board was not an issue for the Washington Huskies last season. Quarterback Keith Price quietly put up Andrew Luck-type numbers and the Huskies were last seen racking up 56 points in the Alamo Bowl. The problem, in that game and others, was that they couldn't stop anyone. Despite the 56-point outburst, Baylor hung 67 and the Huskies amazingly failed to cover +9.5. And Baylor wasn’t the only squad to pick on this defense. Against ranked teams Nebraska, Oregon, USC and Stanford, UW allowed 47.5 ppg. Fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian did what any coach would do and brought in a completely new defensive staff led by coordinator Justin Wilcox (Boise State, Tennessee). Wilcox will try to implement a 3-4 scheme this season, putting more emphasis on man-to-man coverage and pressure.

"Aggressive, swarming to the ball, man-to-man coverage," said safety Justin Glenn, describing the new Read more

Buffalo at Minnesota -2.5 O/U 37

Buffalo's Chan Gailey reveals the game plan for his quarterbacks heading into Friday's game at Minnesota.

"[It] did not happen last week," Bills coach Chan Gailey told Buffalo reporters. "Tyler got 19 and Vince got 30. We would like to stay at 20 and 20 if we can. With [Fitzpatrick] getting 20, you like to think a game is 60-something plays. Tyler may end up with a few more this week."

NCAAF Betting: Texas A&M goes with redshirt frosh at quarterback

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel will be Week 1's starter against Louisiana Tech. He'll work behind a veteran offensive line that has 95 career starts.

"Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps,'' Sumlin said. ''My policy is simple really; the best player plays. Competition is a great thing and we need more competition at all of our positions. All of our quarterbacks have competed well, and I expect them to continue to push Johnny."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

Boston (Buchholz) at Baltimore (Tillman) +120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

My clients and I cashed a right side winner betting on the Orioles against the Red Sox on Tuesday.  We stepped it up a notch last night, hitting our 20* Big Ticket using the same formula.  And while today’s pitching matchup isn’t nearly as favorable for the Orioles, betting (and beating) baseball is most assuredly more than just isolating favorable pitching matchups!  Given the current form of these two squads, Baltimore has no business as a home underdog despite the starting pitching edge for Boston.

Even if Boston has the starting pitching edge, the Orioles have a major edge when it comes to their bullpen and when it comes to finding ways to scratch out wins in coin-flip type ballgames.  The O’s are 22-6 in one run games this year; while going 12-2 in games decided in extra innings.  The Red Sox are just 2-6 in extra inning affairs and Read more

College Football Gambling: Colorado names former Kansas QB Webb its starter

08.16.2012     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado named Jordan Webb its Week 1 starting quarterback. Webb graduated from Kansas and was able to transfer without having to sit out. In two seasons in Lawrence, Webb threw for 3,078 yards, 60.6% completions and had a 20-20 TD-to-INT ratio. Colorado had the lowest QB Rating in the PAC-12 last season (123.7).

"Obviously, the experience shows, the poise shows," added CU quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer. "He was able to transfer terminology. Concepts are concepts, but he was able to transfer the terminology relatively quickly. There's still a learning curve for him, but he really progressed quicker than I thought he would."

Cleveland at Green Bay -3 O/U 40

Cleveland head coach Pat Shurmur is considering playing his starters, including rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, the entire first half of tonight's game against Green Bay. Note that the Browns play Philadelphia in Week 3 of the preseason as well as Week 1 of the regular season.

"They may play a little more; they may not," Shurmur said of tonight's game. "We'll just have to see. I'm going to keep that open."

"You like to see completions," Shurmur said. "You like to see if the ball is thrown down field, again you get completions. You obviously want to score points, but you want to see the quarterback manage Read more

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Upgrades to Lambeau could impact wind

08.16.2012     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Something to keep an eye on tonight during tonight’s Cleveland-Green Bay preseason game. The Packers built a huge video board in the south end zone at Lambeau and some are saying it could impact the wind/kicking game.

"We need to understand the wind," McCarthy said. "With the design (of) the south end zone, it's a significant structure. It potentially will change. I would say it definitely will factor in the southwest with the wind coming through."

"The structure itself is larger, it blocks the wind,'' Slocum said. "It used to creep over the south end, get in there and stir around and create unique winds. I think it's actually going to help. That's my forecast. Just help the kicker, whoever's kicking the ball. I think it'll be less significant. Now, I can be proven wrong. We'll see.''
