NFL Preseason Gambling: Redskins starters slated for 30-35 plays vs. Bears

Washington at Chicago -1 O/U 37

Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said his starters will play 30-35 snaps against the Chicago Bears tonight.

“It all depends,” Shanahan said after yesterday’s practice. “A lot has to depend on the number of series, number of plays. I shouldn’t say the number of plays, because sometimes the series really don’t dictate the amount of plays that you have. But we’re going to get certain guys a certain amount of plays. We’ll see if we get that done.”

Washington at Chicago -1 O/U 37

Because of a wet field the Chicago Bears played it cautious in Week 1 with some of their top players. Lovie Smith – one of the least trustable coaches in the league when it comes to preseason info – claims more emphasis will be placed on tonight's game vs. Washington. Smith said some starters will play the entire first half.

“We didn’t play as well as we needed to last time,” Bears coach Lovie Smith admitted. “So we’re anxious to play a good Washington team that got a win last week.”

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Chicago Bears have look of an OVER team in 2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While I cashed my first Bears tickets this season with a never-in-doubt winner on the relationship of Brian Urlacher and Jenny McCarthy not making it to the regular season opener, I’ll be looking to cash many more involving this team as the season progresses. Front and center for the Bears this season will be their remodeled offense.  There’s no question that the pairing of Mike Martz and Jay Cutler was a disaster with sacks and turnovers highlighting their brief tenure. Cutler is out of that Brett Favre mold; a talented gun slinger who in the right system could thrive. Favre had Mike Holmgren while in Green Bay and the Bears are hoping first-year offensive coordinator Mike Tice can provide Cutler with a similar path to riches.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Bears were at one point 7-3 last season before Cutler and then running back Matt Forte got hurt. The offense got progressively worse and the Bears missed the postseason at 8-8. During the offseason, coupled with the departure of Martz, the Bears managed to bring in stud wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who used to play with Cutler in Denver. Once a major weakness, the wide receiver position is Read more

NFL Handicapping: Comparing Cantor's openers vs. CRIS's current odds

08.17.2012     12:51 PM     Printer Friendly
Here in the Sportsmemo Blog we like to do a lot of line comparisons. Offshore vs. Vegas, openers vs. current numbers, sharp shops vs. square shops, etc. Tracking the changes and differences is a great way to better understanding oddsmakers and the betting markets. Today, we take a look at Cantor Gaming's NFL regular season Week 1 lines from way back in early May and compared them to CRIS's current numbers. Remember, Cantor not only posted Week 1 but also every game through Week 16. Since then, practically every offshore sportsbook has Week 1 posted and bettors have had a crack at seeing every team at least once during the preseason.

NFL Preseason Free Play: Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings

Buffalo at Minnesota -2.5 O/U 37
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Vikings couldn’t do anything last week.  Their defense allowed 23 first downs and a whopping 260 rushing yards.  Held to just a pair of field goals, their offense sputtered no matter who was under center.  This week though is going to be different!

First of all, the Vikings have adjusted their QB rotation.  After Christian Ponder – a young QB with something to prove – sits, they’ll have Joe Webb and Sage Rosenfels taking snaps.  Webb is the type of run/pass threat who’s always dangerous in the preseason.  Rosenfels – a former starting QB with Houston who is replacing disastrous Sacramento State product McLeod Bethel-Thompson in the rotation this week – has enjoyed more than a handful of big second halves in the preseason throughout the course of his career.

NFL Preseason ATS Notes: Tampa Bay committed to running the football

08.17.2012     10:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Tampa Bay -3 O/U 37.5

Look for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to continue their emphasis on running the football this preseason. In Week 1, they ran the ball 34 times out of 58 plays and had a seven minute edge over Miami in time of possession. All seven plays the Bucs ran inside the Dolphins’ 10-yard line were on the ground.

"We have to run the ball and keep the lead and open up the passing game. It all stems from the running game so as long as we do our jobs then I think good things will happen."

"Having a good, solid run game just gives you more options," he said. "It gives you more third-down options or better third-down options as well as better first-down options. And when you can get a good run game established, it makes you a versatile Read more

CFL Free Betting Pick: Montreal Alouettes at Edmonton Eskimos

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Montreal +2.5 at Edmonton O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Montreal

There has been some significant line movement on the Edmonton side upon news that Montreal will be without RB Brandon Whitaker and WR Jamel Richardson ande RB Cory Boyd makes his anticipated debut with the Edmonton Eskimos. Edmonton has risen from an opener of -1 to -2.5. I don’t completely agree with it for a couple of reasons. The main reason I’m recommending the Alouettes despite those injuries is because I don’t believe Montreal QB Anthony Calvillo, the greatest QB in CFL history who leads the league in all-time passing yards, should be an underdog to a vastly inferior QB on the other side in Stephen Jyles.

Montreal has owned and dominated this series going 4-0 SU over the last two years. We saw Winnipeg take care of business last night in a win over Hamilton after they swept the season series last year. Sometimes when you have a team’s number, it can carry over. Those four Montreal wins over Edmonton in 2010 and 2011 came when Ricky Ray was the man under center for the Eskimos but now it’s the much less capable Jyles. This brief QB Read more

Another gambling movie that probably won't be good slated for production

08.17.2012     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
It is our obligation, no matter how bleak the outlook, to post news of gambling related movies slated for production. Recently, we called out Lay the Favorite's trailer for providing little to no incentive to spend even $1 at Red Box. Various reviews agree with our assessment. Then there is Runner, Runner with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake slated for a 2013 release. It is described as, "A businessman is caught up in the world of offshore online gaming." Hopefully Timberlake runs up a six figure debt with his credit agent betting 4-teamers at 5Dimes. OK, up next, Mississippi Grind, starting Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by the people who did Half Nelson which was pretty good. Read more

NFL Preseason Gambling: Detroit's Schwartz wants betting showing vs. Baltimore

Detroit at Baltimore -3 O/U 39.5

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz seeking a better performance out of his team tonight in Baltimore.

"Hopefully we play a lot better," he said Wednesday. "We need to play a lot better. We need to play with a little more sense of urgency."

"That's the way it is probably for every facet of this team right now," he said. "Work on the stuff that you call quite a bit during the games and get really good at that, and the game-plan stuff, we don't have a whole lot in if any. We don't really look at the opponent too much in the preseason. It's more trying to execute our offense rather than try and beat their defense."

NFL Preseason ATS Notes: Carolina starters to play first half, Rivera wants better effort

Miami at Carolina -3 O/U 37

Carolina head coach Ron Rivera says Cam Newton and the starters will play the entire first half during tonight's game against Miami. Earlier this week, Rivera also came out and requested a better effort from his players after a poor showing in Week 1's 26-13 loss to Houston.

"I expected some guys to step up and make some plays and some guys didn't," Rivera said. "That is disappointing. When you have an opportunity to play this football game, you have to play it with a sense of urgency and we didn't do that, especially in the second half.

"To me that was very disappointing and I will work to get that corrected because it falls on me. I do not accept that as football and I Read more
