Sportsmemo Handicapper Alf Musketa's FedEX Cup Betting Preview

08.20.2012     02:50 PM     Alf Musketa     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Alf Musketa

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With so much money at stake for the Tour players to win over the next four events, the best in the game worldwide want a piece of the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs. The overall Fed Ex Cup winner will receive $10 million dollars and a five-year exemption. In each of the four events, first prize is worth over $1 million dollars.

The Fed Ex Cup favors and rewards consistent players. The points system is flawed, but the PGA Tour was forced to generate some type of interest in golf once the football season starts. They made the system easier by awarding just 500 points to winners during the regular season, however in the Playoffs points are multiplied fivefold to 2,500 points. Anyone in the Top 125 can win, but the lower ranked players are forced to get off to a fast start, because the fields are chopped down after each event.

The Top 125 will play in the The Barclays with a 36-hole cut. Then only the Top 100 advance to the Deutsch Bank Championship where there is another 36-hole cut. Then only the Top 70 players will play in the BMW Championship where there is no cut. Follow that, a week off for the players, and only the Top 30 will play in the Tour Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Buffalo Bills on the rise defensively

Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the Buffalo Bills – After starting 5-2 last season, the Bills’ offense went into remission, the defense couldn’t stop anyone and they limped to a 1-8 finish. It marked the 12th straight time the team failed to earn a postseason berth – the longest current drought in the NFL. The fast start was keyed by the efficient play of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who in those first seven games posted a solid 15/9 TD-to-INT ratio. That rate however nearly flip-flopped (9/14) the final nine games and rumors circulated that Fitzpatrick was playing with cracked ribs.  It wasn’t the only key injury with DT Kyle Williams, arguably the team’s best defensive player, and RB Fred Jackson, who suffered a broken leg, both missing substantial time.

Heading into 2012, I think there is an excellent opportunity for improvement and it starts on the defensive side of the football. Much maligned for his work as a head coach, Dave Wannstedt steps into a more ideal situation as defensive coordinator. The stop unit will lean on a 4-3 format with extra emphasis on the front four.  The group consists of the aforementioned and now Read more

Stay hot Atlantic City's Golden Nugget Casino

08.20.2012     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Hard to feel sorry about Atlantic City's declining casino revenue after hearing stories like this one. Apparently, the Golden Nugget Casino received a shipment of cards that weren't shuffled. Rather than double-check, which successful casinos tend to do when it comes to these types of things, they just sent them right to the baccarat table. Of course a handful of gamblers – not the dealers or pit bosses or dudes watching from the spy cams – noticed the gaffe and proceeded to win $1.5 million. Now the casino is suing the company they bought the cards from and the players.

"The Golden Nugget appealed to gamblers to come in and play games licensed and sanctioned by the state of New Jersey," he said. "My clients did exactly that, and then were denied their winnings. There is absolutely no law in New Jersey that would permit the Golden Nugget to declare the game illegal because it failed to provide shuffled cards."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Germano) at Milwaukee (Rogers) -155 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

The Brewers lineup is hot right now.  Don’t be fooled by yesterday’s shutout loss, when both Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart got the day off to rest.  Even against one of the hottest pitchers in the majors, Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels, the Brewers enjoyed some offensive success on Saturday.  Prior to that, Milwaukee had scored five runs or more in each of their last seven ballgames, flying Over the total six times during that span.

Chicago, too, has been hitting the ball well of late, averaging five runs per game in their last two series against the Reds and Astros.  No surprise, then, that we’ve seen the Cubs go 7-0 to the Over during the course of the last week.

Neither starter here is trustworthy.  Chicago’s Justin Germano has only one quality start in four tries with the team, while Rogers is still looking for his first big league Read more

College Football Betting Alert: South Carolina now -7.5 (CRIS) at Vanderbilt

08.20.2012     11:25 AM     Printer Friendly
Money continues to come in on the South Carolina Gamecocks for their season opener against Vanderbilt (Aug. 30). CRIS opened SC -4 back on August 2 and was immediately bet up to -6.5. After some two-way action over the last two weeks there was another pro-SC move earlier today with the Gamecocks climbing to -7.5 at CRIS. The rest of the offshore world remains at -7 though Pinnacle and Heritage have their juice shaded towards the road favorite.

In last year’s meeting, South Carolina (-14.5) got the spread covering win, 21-3. They outgained the Commodores by nearly 300 yards. 2010 yielded a similar result as SC (+260 total yards) got the cover (-11.5) in a 21-7 victory. Four of the last five meetings have gone under the total with one push.

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's O'Brien named starting quarterback

08.20.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For the second consecutive year, Wisconsin will go with a graduate transfer at quarterback.  Danny O'Brien, who spent two seasons at Maryland, was named Week 1's starter. O'Brien earned ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010 (2,438 yards, 22 TDs, 8 INTs) before struggling under head coach Randy Edsall. UW head coach Bret Bielema mentioned O'Brien's ability to quickly learn the system was the deciding factor. It'll be a tall order for O'Brien to duplicate Russell Wilson's numbers but he's more than capable and walks into a very good situation in Madison.

“Danny did some nice things, just like the other two did at times,” Bielema said. “I think the part Danny brings to the table is he learns very quickly. ... The thing that shows with Danny probably is the fact he’s started a number of games and that preparation factor, you can kind of see it.”

NFL Betting Notes: Tennessee Titans name Locker Week 1 starter

08.20.2012     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So the Tennessee Titans named Jake Locker their starting quarterback which means Matt Hasselbeck will retake the job by Week 3. We don't see a huge advantage or disadvantage with either quarterback. Locker can make more plays, but will inevitably make more mistakes. The opposite holds true for Hasselbeck. The concern is if the Titans decide to play musical chairs and don't allow either signal caller to develop and sort of continuity.

College Football Gambling: Fast tempo could spell disaster for Ole Miss

08.20.2012     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It seems like every college football team in the country wants to run some type of up-tempo, spread option offense that picks up big chunks of yards and wears down the opposition. For some, that philosophy has worked wonders, while for others, it simply doesn’t pan out. The key to running that type of offense is talent. In the case of Ole Miss, there is some talent, but we question whether there is enough for first-year head coach Hugh Freeze’s up-tempo offense to work in the SEC. It is difficult for opposing teams to score without the ball, but when you speed up the game against superior defenses, you are asking for not only a lot of three-and-outs but three-and-outs that don’t chew up any clock. In the case of the Rebels, putting your defense on the field any more than it has to be is inviting a lot of blowout losses. Note that Ole Miss ranked 117th out of 120 teams in points per play last year (0.204).

NCAAF Handicapping: West Virignia expected to play even more up-tempo

08.20.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia is hoping for even more tempo and pace to its offense in head coach Dana Holgorsen's second season. Last year, the Mountaineers averaged just under 74 plays per game. They ranked 19th nationally in points per play at 0.476. Note that the Big XII will feature five teams who ranked in the top 25 in points per play in 2011: Oklahoma State (1st), Baylor (9th), Oklahoma (17th), West Virginia and Kansas State (21). Nine of WVU's 13 games went over the total last year.

“I have never installed this offense to where you look back at the end of the first year and are like, ‘We’re good that year.’ You always look back and it’s like, ‘How did we win a game?’” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “I don’t think (our tempo) necessarily got to where we wanted it to.”

“I think our tempo is going to be extreme this year between really fast and slowing it down and really fast and slowing it down,” Dawson said. “We should be able to have three or four different tempos, Read more

College Football Betting: Michigan State focused on improving run game

08.20.2012     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With an experienced offensive line and the departure of quarterback Kirk Cousins, Michigan State is expected to feature more of a run-first offense this year. The Spartans attempted the second fewest run plays in the Big Ten behind Iowa in 2011. They also finished 78th nationally in rushing yards per game (137.9). Andrew Maxwell was named MSU's Week 1 starting quarterback.

"The Big Ten has always historically been about running the football," Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten said. "So, you play the cards you're dealt. If you have the luxury of having a senior quarterback, some real good receivers, some good tight ends, it's OK to zip things around. Even if you have a guy who's the quality of the guy starting out for us (Andrew Maxwell), it's OK to zip it around. But at the end of the game, when you need that three yards, you want to be able to count on one another to run that ball."
