NFL Gambling Notes: Carolina not worred about poor run game in Week 1

The Carolina Panthers respond to being held to only 10 yards rushing in Week 1's loss to Tampa Bay. Head coach Ron Rivera claims their
struggles are fixable
. Running back Jonathan Stewart missed that game and is lited as questionable for Sunday.
“There’s some cause for optimism as the mistakes on the offensive side are all correctable,” Rivera said Monday. “It wasn’t a glaring thing as far as schematically. It was a player here or a player there, something that they did (wrong). We’ll get better at it.”

Here is my Week 1 edition of NFL News & Notes as I will examine a few games where the stats and/or final score don’t tell the entire story. Having the ability to separate fact from fiction will allow you to make the proper adjustments to your own handicapping.
Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets
This game is one of those classic situations where the box score doesn’t tell the truth. The Bills outgained the Jets 390-384. Buffalo barely lost the battle for first downs (21-20) and time of possession was close to even. So does that mean Buffalo, despite losing, played well and could have won the game? Absolutely not! The Bills were miserable. The offense struggled all day with little to no running game aside from the one CJ Spiller touchdown run. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was brutal; missing his receivers with high and inaccurate throws throughout the game to go with three interceptions. The defense couldn't stop the run and the secondary was carved up by Mark Sanchez and receivers Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley. The 48-28 final score was the true indication of the lopsided nature of this game. It wasn't the meaningless yardage battle won

New Jersey says stance on sports betting ban not strong enough
09.11.2012 08:36 AM

New Jersey claims that leagues have a
weak argument
for ban on sports betting.
There is "no reason to believe that sports wagering in New Jersey will cause harm to the Leagues ever, let alone the imminent, 'certainly impending' harm that the Supreme Court has required for a party to have standing to seek prospective injunctive relief," Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa argued in his brief.
"Nor have the Leagues alleged a sufficiently concrete and particularized harm through their vague, novel theory of reputational injury, which does not resemble the sort of reputational harms that courts have found sufficient to satisfy Article III" of the U.S. Constitution.

Navy at Penn State
Penn State opened -6.5 now -5.5
Not a huge line move, no big deal, right? Well I've talked to several handicappers this week that love Penn Starte especially against Navy who looked like they couldn't stop a Pop-Warner team in their first game in Ireland. Is this line being set up for a major play or is the early money just saying we are going to bet against the Nittany Lions until they win? I think it's a set up.
Northern Illinois at Army
Northern Illinois opened -1.5 now -3
Anyone that bet on San Diego State or against Army wants to reinvest their money here, because Army like Navy has no defense. (Football speaking only) Yes, teams improve the most from game one to game two, but usually the Academy teams are in tip top shape at the start of the season and prospect ATS. Northern Illinois gave Iowa everything it could handle in Week 1 and that effort was better than Army showed last week so I agree with the move, made by smart handicappers.
Connecticut at Maryland
Maryland opened pk, Connecticut now -3
Interesting move here after

This week’s Alabama-Arkansas matchup suddenly doesn’t have as much appeal after the Razorbacks lost at home to UL-Monroe AND quarterback Tyler Wilson is currently listed as questionable after suffering a concussion. Wilson absorbed numerous hits from Warhawk defenders and missed the second half. His departure helped Monroe rally from a 28-7 deficit to win, 34-31 in overtime. Arkansas’ defense was burned for 550 yards, 30 first downs and 412 yards passing. They also allowed an amazing 6-of-7 on 4th down. Redshirt freshman Brandon Allen was just 6-of-20 throwing the ball in Wilson’s absence, and he will split reps with junior Brandon Mitchell this week in practice.
Alabama also lost a key player to injury as backup running back Jalston Fowler hurt his knee and is out for the season. The Tide won’t miss Fowler too much with starter Eddie Lacy and three freshmen led by T.J. Yeldon all looking solid through the first two games.
Florida was also bitten by the injury bug in its win over Texas A&M. The Gators were shaky in the first half on defense, but pitched a shutout in the second to win 20-17. Linebacker Jelani Jenkins

William Hill wants to provide Vegas bettors with endless amount of options

Article from the
Las Vegas Sun
on William Hill's preparation for the football season.
“They could have 20 or 30 bets during a quarter of a football or soccer game,” Vaccaro said. “We don’t approach that, but our goal is to someday maximize what they do over there here in Nevada. Can we get to 2,300 bets a day? I don’t know, but we’re working on it.”
“We knew there really wasn’t anything else out there with a point-spread in college,” Shapiro explained. “It’s the only contest of its kind in the market.”

Sportsmemo's NFL Week 1 Betting Recap
09.11.2012 06:10 AM

By the betting numbers...NFL Week 1 (see results below). Note that we will be using CRIS's opening and closing lines throughout the season.
Based on closing lines…
Home teams had a small edge at 8-7-1 ATS.
Underdog had a small edge at 8-7-1 ATS.
Games lined at a touchdown or more were split 3-3 ATS.
Totals went 9-7 O/U.
Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" six times but "incorrect" seven times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." In three games, the game opened and closed at the same number.

College Football Betting: Florida's defense dealing with rash of injuries

A
slew of injuries
for Florida's defense following last week's win at Texas A&M. Tennessee opened a pick 'em at CRIS for Saturday's contest but have been bet up to -2.5/-3.
Florida coach Will Muschamp said linebacker Jelani Jenkins and cornerback Cody Riggs are likely to be out at least four weeks after injuries sustained during No. 18 Florida's 20-17 road victory over Texas A&M on Saturday. Jenkins suffered a fractured thumb, while Riggs endured a slight fracture in his foot.
The injury report didn't end there.
Muschamp also said linebacker/defensive end Ronald Powell is likely headed to a redshirt season. The team's top pass rusher re-injured the knee in which he tore his ACL during the spring game. Muschamp had estimated prior to the second injury that

Gut check time for Utah heading into this weekend's
showdown against rival BYU
. The Utes couldn't get through two games without an injury to quarterback Jordan Wynn. The oft-injured Wynn
announced his retirement
from football earlier today. Senior back-up Jon Hayes stepped in for Wynn during last Friday's overtime loss to Utah State. True freshman Travis Wilson will also get a look moving forward. The Utes came into the season with high expectations but could be headed towards disaster. They’re a home dog to BYU on Saturday and then play three road games in four weeks with the lone home tilt coming against USC.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Washington Nationals at New York Mets

Washington
(Gonzalez) -150 at
NY Mets
(McHugh) O/U 7
Recommendation: Washington
The modest favorite’s price here is very reasonable considering the starting pitching matchup and the current forms of these two ball clubs. The Mets are falling apart. They just got swept at home by the Braves over the weekend; outscored 17-5. Since the All-Star break, in all games NOT against the worst team in baseball (Houston), New York is a woeful 2-17 here at Citi Field, a legitimate home field disadvantage! They’ve been dominated by the Nationals all year, losing all five previous series against Washington while going 3-11 in the last 14 meetings. Don’t expect that track record to improve today!
The Nationals are trending in the opposite direction, 9-3 in their last dozen games. Their lineup has been on fire for weeks, pounding out seven runs or more nine times during that dozen game span. The Mets are just 19-31 against opposing

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Recapping NFL rookie quarterbacks in Week 1
09.10.2012 07:09 AM
Printer Friendly
With an NFL record five rookie starting quarterbacks under center on opening day, I spent the first Sunday of the regular season watching these youngsters very carefully. I tried to evaluate each one within the context of his team – no quarterback can be successful without the complimentary pieces of the equation surrounding him, both on offense and on defense. Here are my thoughts:
Cleveland Browns
- Cleveland’s defense held Michael Vick to a QB rating of 25.4. They forced five turnovers, returning one for a score and setting up all three Browns’ offensive scores. Their defensive playmakers made huge plays, most notably CB Joe Haden and LB D’Qwell Jackson, and Michael Vick was positively pummeled by the Browns pass rush.
And yet the Browns still found a way to lose. With the game on the line late in the fourth quarter – boom, a dropped INT in the end zone that would have clinched the game. And there’s no sugarcoating this performance from Brandon Weeden, the worst looking of all the rookie quarterbacks in the preseason and in his first “real” start.
On Weeden's first drive, he missed a

Florida State hosts seminar on point shaving in sports

If you happen to be in the greater Tallahassee area on October 12, you can pop in for a seminar on
Corruption, Gambling, and Manipulation in Sports
hosted by Florida State. There will be a handful of panelists including Sean Patrick Griffin, author of
Gaming the Game: The Story Behind the NBA Betting Scandal and the Gambler Who Made It Happen
. According to the “syllabus” it doesn’t look like anyone from the gambling industry (maybe an oddsmaker or actual bettor?) will speak which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense considering the topic. But, someone who is commonly referred to as a “
sports conspiracy theorist
” will. Sounds like the audience is going to get plenty of non-biased opinions.

Sportsmemo's College Football Week 2 Betting Recap
09.10.2012 06:15 AM
Printer Friendly
By the betting numbers...College Football Week 2 (see results below). Note that we will be using CRIS's opening and closing lines throughout the season. We do not include games involving FCS teams.
Based on closing lines…
Road teams were the strongest side bet at 23-20 ATS (44-34 ATS YTD).
There were two neutral site games. Underdogs (Syracuse and UL-Monroe) went 2-0 ATS.
Underdogs held a slight edge at 22-20 ATS (44-38 ATS YTD). Two games closed as pick ‘em (South Florida/Nevada and Florida/Texas A&M) while one game pushed (NC State -3 vs. UConn).
Double-digits spreads went the way of the underdogs at 15-8 ATS (27-20 ATS YTD).
Totals went 21-23-1 Over/Under (41-44-1 YTD).
Beating the Market: If you bet the opening number on a team that moved three points or more based on the closing line (i.e. Virginia -7) you went: 2-7 ATS (8-14 ATS YTD)
Chasing the Market: If you bet the closing number on a team that moved three points or more (i.e. Virginia -10) you went: 2-7 ATS (7-15 ATS YTD).
Based on the opening and closing lines, the market was "correct" 20 times but "incorrect" 18 times. "Correct" meaning if a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite won by 7, the market was “correct.” If a game opened -3 and closed -4 and the favorite lost outright, the market was obviously "incorrect." Note that in seven games, the game opened and closed at the same number.
Parlay combo breakdown (40 games) (79 games YTD)
Favorite-Over: 10 (24 YTD)
Favorite-Under: 9 (13 YTD)
Underdog-Over: 9 (15 YTD)
Underdog-Under: 12 (29 YTD)
Note that we did not include pick ‘em lines and pushes for our parlay combos.
