College Football Handicapping: First half betting trends to watch

09.21.2012     02:47 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While second half betting in football garners much more attention and money from bettors, there’s also money to be made on specific teams each season betting on the first half. Obviously there is much more speculation involved in playing first halves simply because you don’t get the benefit of watching an entire half play out before you make your wager. In examining all boarded teams that have had three first half betting results thus far, it’s interesting to note that there is only one team in the land that has gone OVER in all three. There are seven that have stayed UNDER the first half total in all three of their games. In this column I’ll take a quick look at the four teams with the most decisive results and then list the other four at the end. These four have been easy moneymakers:

1. Bowling Green – Where has the Falcons offense gone? Even with junior QB Matt Schilz at the helm and seven returning offensive starters, Bowling Green has produced a grand total of 17 combined points. The disheartening part for BGSU fans is that two of their opponents have been Toledo and Idaho who possess below average defenses. The lack of Read more

College Football Betting Stock Watch: Minnesota Golden Gophers on the upswing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the Minnesota Gophers – Ah, the former days of head coach Glen Mason. Well, the Gophers just might get back to being perennial bowl participants.  Much like the Mason era, the Gophers have parlayed an easy schedule into a strong 3-0 start, which builds confidence.  Just ask Bill Snyder.  The good news is that Jerry Kill can coach football and run a program, which is way more than what Tim Brewster could do.  If you squinted hard enough last season you could see real improvement from the Gophers.  At the end of 2011 they actually covered four of their last five games, while showing vast improvement on both sides of the football.  Now, in the bigger picture, their 3-0 start looks that much better.  Last week, they lost senior quarterback MarQueis Gray to a high ankle sprain.  However, from a power rating perspective this might not be a bad deal at all.  Sophomore quarterback Max Shortell relieved him and promptly threw for three touchdowns.  A downfield passing game actually became a reality.  Look for continued improvement from Minnesota.

NFL Betting Stock Watch: St. Louis Rams show upside as an underdog

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the St. Louis Rams – To win at sports betting an understanding of “true value” is imperative.  St. Louis is a great example of this in the early going of 2012.  The Rams were dreadful last season, and that might just be an understatement.  They finished 2-14 and never stood a chance.  Injuries hit this team hard of which they lost nearly 100 games.  The schedule was arguably the strongest in the NFL, and a start against Philadelphia, the New York Giants and Baltimore sapped all of their hopes.  The Rams averaged a paltry 12.1 points per game and 24 yards per point.  In searching for value, you need to look for change.  Well, change came in the form of new head coach Jeff Fisher.  Fisher can coach as well as just about anyone in the NFL as he showed for years with the Tennessee Titans.  Very much like Tony LaRussa, folks love him or hate him, but Fisher does a great job of putting his teams in position to win. If he could do that with the Rams, they will be a “live” underdog throughout the campaign.  In addition, there’s actually some talent and parts to work Read more

College Football Gambling: Bettors flock towards Oregon State Beavers

Oregon State at UCLA -7.5 O/U 52

A couple quotes from Las Vegas oddsmakers on the sharp action they've seen on Oregon State. UCLA opened -11.5 and was bet down to -7 before settling in at -7.5 earlier today.

“How I move the line — this might sound corny — is like an art form, a feel,” Kornegay said. “We took the $5,000 bets, but we also know the sharps are playing it. When you get a feel that, 'Wow! They’re really playing a side,' you need to move the line a half-point or full point even if it’s based on nothing but what we call 'air,' our own feel.

“This line was too high, and we’ve moved it … you’ve got to be with the market.”

“Oregon State dominated the game,” Rood said. “They’ve delivered as an underdog and Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Lack of continuity plagues Oakland Raiders

09.21.2012     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh -3.5 at Oakland O/U 45.5

We swear the AP wrote this article three years ago. It goes like this: Oakland coordinator (insert name) preaches patience due to new system. Over the last three years, Oakland has had three different head coaches, offensive coordinators, and defensive coordinators.

“Let’s keep things in perspective for a second here,” Knapp said. “We’ve played two games in the regular season on offense. We’ve had two different centers and a right tackle who played half a game last week. We need some patience. You can’t develop a scheme in two weeks in a regular season.”

“It will take a little while. It will take a little while,” Knapp said. “I don’t know Read more

NFL Handicapping: Teams eager for payback against New Orleans Saints

09.21.2012     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So New Orleans lost to Carolina who got manhandled by Tampa Bay and the New York Giants. The Saints also lost to Washington who managed to lose at St. Louis. It's the NFL, and you could play that game with a lot of teams, but it certainly raises a few flags. Note too that there seems to be plenty of animosity towards the Saints from the rest of the NFC South. We've all witnessed Sean Payton rubbing it in at one point or another. This article came out prior to last week's Carolina game but something to keep note of moving forward.

"It's a philosophy. It's an attitude. And that's what his is," Panthers Coach Ron Rivera told the Charlotte Observer last week of the Saints' Payton. "So he coaches that way and they play that way. My attitude and my philosophy is win the football game, and then be smart about the next week. That's just the way I look at it, a difference in philosophy."

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Marcum) at Washington (Jackson) -125 O/U 8
Recommendation: Washington

We’re in the midst of the MLB playoff push and unlike a majority of the season, you can have success betting on or against teams while pretty much ignoring the starting pitching matchup. Now that Milwaukee has jumped back in the postseason race, bettors are very eager to bet this squad. I don't blame them. If not for their bullpen, Milwaukee could have won 90+ games. But while it looks dangerous to step in front of this team, they won't have many edges in tonight's matchup. The Brewers tried to unload Shaun Marcum during the summer but there weren't any takers. He's had arm issues this season and since his return I've played over and/or against in each of his four starts (7.23 ERA, .997 OPS). Edwin Jackson doesn't get much fanfare but he takes the ball every fifth day and gives the Nationals a chance to win. He's a good fit vs. Milwaukee (.217 vs. righties). I respect Milwaukee's run, but we're Read more

Dude spots ATM glitch, blows it all because he sucks at gambling

09.20.2012     02:18 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
People are really, really stupid. Take this guy for example. A retired man from Detroit discovered that he had unlimited funds in his Bank of America account thanks to a glitch in the system. Unfortunately, he never saw Office Space, and instead of occasionally taking a few bucks out of the petty cash jar, he went for the jugular and ran up a $1.5 gambling debt. The lesson? Never hit up a casino ATM for five figures from a checking account that previously held a balance of $14.32.

"In this case, the bank's glitch allowed the defendant to lose a significant amount of money that was not even his in the first place," states the U.S. Attorney's sentencing memorandum, filed on June 11. "The fact that defendant acted on an impulse does not minimize the seriousness of his conduct and the need for a custodial sentence."

Bob Stoops wants to keep injuries a secret because it helps bettors

09.20.2012     01:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A new trend is forming in college football with coaches becoming more and more reluctant to provide the media/public with injury information. Some coaches feel it gives opposing teams an unneeded advantage and an excuse to go after already injured kids. Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops supports that theory but foolishly tries to strengthen his case by including gambling.

"To me the problem is it's all about gambling. They're the ones that have the true interest in it, and this is college sports. We should not contribute to those who are gambling on college sports. The NFL? Have at it. Go to Vegas, bet on them all, whatever. But gambling is the issue.

"Gambling becomes the issue when Joe Schmo down there loses a big chunk of change on the last play of the game, when we've got out threes in, giving them some snaps. And all of a sudden we don't cover the spread. Now it makes them more angry. It changes people.

"Or you've got your young guy that's playing ball for you, he drops a Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Atlanta Falcons at San Diego Chargers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta at San Diego
Teddy Covers' Recommendation:
Atlanta
Sunday, 1 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
San Diego -3 O/U 49
CRIS Current: San Diego -3 (-120) O/U 47.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Diego -1

It’s a tough spot for the road underdog as they travel West on a short week after hanging on to beat the Broncos on Monday Night Football. However, the spot is certainly factored into this pointspread. My power ratings show the Falcons as two points better than the Chargers right now, which should equate to a pointspread of San Diego -1 at Qualcomm Stadium – there’s line value with the road dog, if they can overcome the tough circumstances.

The Chargers haven’t opened a season with a 3-0 SU mark since Marty Schottenheimer’s first year as their head coach back in 2002. Under Norv Turner, this team has consistently underachieved coming out of the gate. Only once in his previous five years Read more

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin benches QB O'Brien, frosh to start vs. UTEP

09.20.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UTEP at Wisconsin -17.5 O/U 48.5

We knew Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien wasn't going to duplicate Russell Wilson's success but three games into the season, O'Brien already finds himself on the bench. The Badgers will start freshman Joel Stave against UTEP on Saturday. Stave replaced O'Brien in last week's game against Utah State after O'Brien lost a fumble.

"I think any of the quarterbacks would admit that Joel has the best arm out of all of them," Bielema said. "He's got great composure. . . . Joel's pretty educated.

"Now, obviously he's only got one half under his belt as a quarterback that's out there on the field. So that's the part that's the unknown."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Richard) +105 at Arizona (Skaggs) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: San Diego

Arizona rookie Tyler Skaggs had some fraudulent success (.203 BABIP, 12-8 K-to-BB ratio) his first three starts after being called up. In his last two outings, it caught up to Skaggs as he was pounded around by San Diego and San Francisco (7 IP, 10 ERs). Against the Giants I noticed that his velocity was also down. There are questions whether or not Skaggs has the stuff to be a successful MLB pitcher. I'll leave the door open, but I don't like what I've seen thus far, especially the 2-to-1 FB-to-GB ratio and having to pitch at Chase Field. Clayton Richard meanwhile has been solid the back half of the season with a 2.72 ERA in August and September. He doesn't miss a lot of bats and shows the typical Petco/road dichotomy, but he appears more trustworthy than Skaggs at this point. I made a play on the Padres and would also consider the over if the total reached 9.

Antigua tells U.S. to quit being such a meanie with online gambling

09.20.2012     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
At a recent online gaming conference in Las Vegas, Antigua and Barbuda's Finance Minister Harold Lovell called for the United States to end the ban on interstate Internet gambling. We applaud the effort Harold but your pleas have likely fallen on deaf ears. In anticipation of just that, Lovell then "threatened" the US by saying A&B will "…explore the right to exact sanctions on industries in the U.S." – whatever that means.

"Why should it make any difference whether a betting transaction crosses a state border?" Lovell asked.

College Football Handicapping: Temple breaks out new offense for Penn State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Temple at Penn State -7.5 O/U 42.5

With an extra week to prepare, Temple will supposedly unveil a new offense against Penn State on Saturday. And by new offense we can only assume there may be a few more forward passes thrown into the mix. In the first half of their loss to Maryland, the Owls were 1-for-3 for 6 yards passing (trailed 26-3). In the second half, they “opened things up” and finished with 178 yards (9.9 ypa).

"Ha, ha. You are going to see on Saturday," quarterback Chris Coyer said. "You know, of course, we are always going to be a run-first team."

"This is the 2012 team. It's a different team" from last season, Temple coach Steve Addazio said. "We have to have a different approach."

So Illinois' defense was confused against Arizona State, right? Hopefully they hired a tutor because Saturday’s opponent Louisiana Tech has been known to confuse a defense or two. According to the Illini, everything that went wrong in Tempe has been fixed. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase (ankle) is expected to play but reports indicate he will not be 100%.
