Super Bowl XLVIII Betting: Three straight scores prop bet history

01.20.2014     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
One of many prop bets that always draws interest from bettors is Will There Be Three Straight Scores? We went back on got the results of every Super Bowl and found that three straight scores occurred 33 times (70.2%). There was a 22-year stretch where it occurred 20 times but the trend has cooled off of late with just five of the last 10 Super Bowls featuring three straight scores. Most sportsbooks offer anywhere from -180 to -200 on the "yes" and +150 to +160 on the "no."

Super Bowl XLVIII Gambling News: LVH plans on having around 400 prop bets

01.20.2014     12:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
ESPN's Chad Millman got the scoop on how LVH Sportsbook is prepping for its Super Bowl XLVIII pro bets. There are expected to be around 400 props.

"We start prepping in the weeks ahead by working on teams we think are going to win. This year we picked the Broncos and the Seahawks. So, for example, we are thinking about what three defensive players on each team we will list as having the most tackles for their team," Kornegay said. "It will take a solid three straight days of putting our full attention to them to get it done. Twelve hours, non-stop. There is a lot of double-checking. We have three guys whose job it is just to look at the betting sheets and make sure there are no mistakes with the numbers. Then we have to input all of these bets into our computer so they can go up on the board for the public to see. We have eight boards and they will rotate every 20 seconds, since we can't fit every prop up there at once."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Houston Rockets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Houston -2 O/U 218
Recommendation: Houston

After playing a pair in Portland already this season where Houston earned a split, they now get their shot versus the Blazers. Most recent meeting on 12/12 saw Houston down just two 97-95 with four minutes to go before final 111-104 verdict. All indications from the road performances point toward the Rockets having the proper ingredients to match up with Portland including the 29 and 32 point outbursts by Dwight Howard. Houston’s defense has actually been pretty solid against the Blazers holding them to FG%’s of 41.4 and 43.8 along with 3 pt%’s of 32.3 & 29.6 which are all below Portland’s season averages. “Texas Triangle” has seen Portland rattle off back-to-back victories but despite their solid play recently (5 consecutive wins, 4-1 ATS), there are some concerns. Portland was on a money burning 1-5 ATS on the road prior to the Texas stops and their three SU wins were against sub-.500 teams Read more

All-Time Super Bowl Betting Results 1967-2013

01.20.2014     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
Below are the all-time Super Bowl betting results dating back to 1967. Only six times have we seen the team to win fail to cover the pointspread. Overall, favorites are 26-20 against the spread (the 1982 Super Bowl was lined as a pick 'em) but underdogs have been the play of late with nine of the last 12 taking the money. In terms of totals, the UNDER was the way to play it back in the late 60’s and early 70's. The 80's and 90's trended OVER the total but it has shifted back towards the UNDER with six of the last nine winning.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: A trip down Super Bowl memory lane

01.20.2014     07:15 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On the one hand, the Super Bowl is just another game for a professional bettor.  On the other hand, the Super Bowl has two major differences.  First and foremost are the prop bets; quite literally hundreds of wagering opportunities that allow bettors to wager from everything on the coin toss and the length of the national anthem to whether Russell Wilson will throw more touchdown passes than Manchester United will score goals on Super Bowl Sunday.  I’ll write about those next week.

The other biggest difference between Super Bowls and other games?  Simple – the Super Bowls stand out in our memories; every one of them.  I’ve been in Vegas since the 1998 football season, and I can tell you where I watched every Super Bowl, what the pointspread was and who covered. Thank you in advance for indulging me a brief trip down memory lane.

My first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was when the Broncos faced the Falcons as favorites of about a TD back in January 1999.  I watched the game in the stadium seating at the Imperial Palace racebook.  My handicap was simple, thinking Denver had a big edge having played in (and beaten) the Read more

Super Bowl XLVIII Betting News: Early money comes in on Denver Broncos

01.20.2014     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Immediately following last night's NFC Championship, various offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks were quick to hang a line on Super Bowl XLVIII (Sunday, Feb. 2). Offshore, CRIS opened Seattle -1.5 while Pinnacle opened a pick 'em. Both shops opened the total at 47.5. In Las Vegas, LVH threw up Seattle -2 O/U 47 while the Wynn had Seattle -1 O/U 48.5. A majority of the early money has been on the Broncos who are anywhere from -1 to -2.5 offshore and in Las Vegas. The current market outliers are CRIS (Denver -2.5) and the Mirage (Denver -1). We'll keep you posted on any signficiant line moves leading up to gameday.

AFC Championship Betting Recap: Denver's defense dominates New England

Masters class performance from Peyton Manning in terms of moving the chains and driving the field. Denver just marched up and down at will, though they had a tendency to stall and settle for field goals in a way that kept things in the neighborhood of getting interesting.

Early in the fourth quarter, Denver was up 23-3…with all 23 points coming on drives of 60 yards or more. That’s 3 field goals and 2 touchdowns. The yardage advantage after the drive was 430-160. Denver was 7 of 11 on third downs…meaning they were basically converting EVERY third down until they got close (only 1 punt, which came on their first drive of the day).

Manning finished with 400 passing yards, a 74% completion rate, no interceptions, and no sacks. As sharp as it gets.

And, you also have to give masters class credit to the Denver defense…because shutting down Tom Brady  most of the day like that ain't easy! Though, Patriots fans have actually seen a lot of this through Read more

NFC Championship Betting Recap: Seattle snags win and cover over San Francisco

SportsMemo.com blog entry.

A very evenly played battle came right down to the final possession. San Francisco got within striking distance for the game-winning touchdown. But, a stellar defensive play from Seattle forced an interception, and sent the Seahawks to the Super Bowl to face the Denver Broncos.

Seattle (-4) 23, San Francisco 17
S. Fran: 308 yards, 5.7 per-play, 3 turnovers, 27% third downs
Seattle: 308 yards, 5.3 per-play, 1 turnovers, 36% third downs

Other Numbers
San Francisco: 161 rush, 14-24-2-147 passing, 14 drive points, 21 stat score, 25 sloppiness
Seattle: 115 rush, 16-25-0-193 passing, 17 drive points, 19 stat score, 14 sloppiness

That 308-308 dead heat in yardage tells you how even the flow of the game was. Stat score was right on the money in terms of total points. But, the turnover disadvantage kept San Francisco from getting quite where they were supposed to. Turnovers and sloppiness are a bit misleading because Seattle had a lost fumble that Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Iowa Hawkeyes

Minnesota +9.5 at Iowa O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

Minnesota has played three true road games, compiling a 2-1 record both straight up and against the spread. The Gophers won 74-59 at Richmond and 68-65 at Penn State. The only road setback for Richard Pitino's squad came at Breslin Center in East Lansing on Jan. 11. Minnesota took on Michigan St. as a 10.5-point underdog and led by a 41-36 count at intermission. The Gophers led by as many as 10 in the second half, only to go 13 minutes without making a shot from the field. Nevertheless, they rallied from a six-point deficit with more than two minutes remaining to force overtime. But Minnesota would fall apart in the extra session. In fact, Michigan State outscored the Gophers 16-4 in OT to pull out an improbable spread cover.

The point is that Minnesota should be 3-0 ATS on the road. This afternoon the Gophers take on an Iowa team coming off a big win. Although the Hawkeyes have had a solid week to get ready for their Big Ten rival, they could possibly fall into a letdown scenario here. Minnesota beat Ohio State on Thursday for a big win, but it has had two days to move past Read more
