College Basketball Betting Free Play: Austin Peay Governors at Eastern Kentucky Colonels

Austin Peay at Eastern Kentucky -6.5 O/U 154.5
Recommendation: Under

Eastern Kentucky has been forced to play at a much slower pace this season due to lack of depth and talent. In nine OVC games, the Colonels have topped 70 possessions only once. They rank dead last in the league at 0.92 points per possession. And their average game score in those nine league games is only 133. Despite that, tonight's total against Austin Peay has been bet up to as high as 155. The reason is because Austin Peay doesn't play much of any defense. The Governors currently rank 345 out of 351 in defensive efficiency. In non-conference play, Austin Peay went seven of eight games allowing 96 points or more. Things haven't been nearly as bad inside league play as they've surrendered a more modest 78.7 ppg in regulation. Their average game score in OVC play is 153.8; a lower mark than tonight's total despite the fact they face the league's worst offense that generally plays at a slower than average pace. EKU enters on a two-game winning streak; both games fueled by solid defense. And like a lot of middle of the road mid-major teams, they tend to play better defense on their Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers

Denver -2 at Los Angeles O/U 226
Recommendation: Over

Each side is without a significant post presence in this one as Denver starting C Nikola Jokic will miss his second straight game due to a strained hip and Lakers starting PF Julius Randle (pneumonia) will miss his second consecutive game. The holes in the Nuggets middle was filled by Jusuf Nurkic Saturday night versus Phoenix but depth behind him is non-existent. Nurkic only played 15:29 minutes as Denver went small for the majority of their 123-112 victory. Los Angeles inserted Tarik Black into their PF spot and he went 30:29 minutes in last Thursday’s 96-88 loss at Utah. The Lakers have more interior options than Denver does which will likely give them a significant “points in the paint” edge tonight. Also note that LA will have starting PG D’Angelo Russell back for this one after going through a full practice Monday and being cleared by team doctors for game action. How effective Russell will be is debatable but the Lakers are now again at full strength in the backcourt.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Akron Zips at Northern Illinois Huskies

Akron -3.5 at Northern Illinois O/U 140
Recommendation: Over

Northern Illinois has played an ultra-light schedule this season that featured only one power conference team (Minnesota). It's helped the Huskies look very capable on the defensive end as they rank 64th nationally in defensive efficiency and second inside the MAC. Tonight they face without question their toughest offensive opponent as Akron has had its way with the MAC thus far. The Zips have scored 83 or more in five of eight league games including back-to-back 90+ point efforts. It also looks as if Akron's love affair with scoring has hindered its defense. The Zips are a perfect 8-0 in league play but are allowing 1.07 ppp and in a number of those games, they held big leads but allowed the competition to stick around (hence their 4-4 ATS record). From a talent perspective, Akron is probably the most capable team in the MAC defensively. But it's hard to tighten the screws when the ball is routinely going through the basket and you're winning games. Northern Illinois features one of the weakest offenses in the MAC but at home it's reasonable to think they'll net a point per possession. Read more

Gambling Update: Raiders to Vegas hits major speed bump

And just like that, the Raiders to Las Vegas goes from being chalk to an underdog.

“This is not a wrench in the wheel, the wheel fell off,” Clark County Commission chair Steve Sisolak told The Nevada Independent. “This is an enormous setback in my opinion.”

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Oddsmakers say no reason yet to move pointspread

01.31.2017     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
A couple of Las Vegas oddsmakers talk about the Super Bowl's pointspread opening and still holding firm at "3."

“I’ve taken a couple big bets on the Patriots (six-figures),” said Wynn sportsbook director John Avello, “but even without those wagers we’d still be relatively even with bets and it’s also counting a good size pop we took on the Falcons as a result of being at +3 EVEN. There’s a ways to go before I start to move anything, but my initial thoughts were that if the number moved off 3 it wouldn’t be down to -2.5, but rather -3.5.”

“I want to get off 3 if I can, but if it doesn’t make sense then there’s no reason for us to go,” said Jay Rood, VP of race and sports for MGM Resorts.
