Chuck Barkley lost big on the Atlanta Falcons

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charles Barkley, our favorite loveable sports betting loser, reportedly lost $100K betting on the Atlanta Falcons.

“Charles is down there and we’re having fun,” White recalled, according to Brad Rowland of UPROXX. “He’s like ‘I just bet $100K on the Falcons.’ I was like, ‘Don’t worry, just get your chips ready. Everything’s gonna be great.’”

College Basketball Handicapping: Indiana's Crean calls out players

02.15.2017     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a fine line between constructive criticism and throwing your team under the bus. Indiana's Tom Crean appears to have accomplished a little of both following Sunday's home loss to Michigan. The Hoosiers have been hurt by injuries but it doesn't excuse the offense from failing to top 65 points in five of its last six games. IU heads to Minnesota tonight. They are currently +5 underdogs.

“I’ve never coach a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally. That includes the teams that have won six or eight games.” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

“Immaturity in the backcourt. We don’t play both ends of the floor with the same purpose that we have to play [with] when shots are not going down. That has to change” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings

St. Louis -110 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

Two former Central Division rivals clash in the Motor City tonight as the Detroit Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues. Detroit has fallen on hard times as of late, dropping nine of its last 11 contests. They currently sit dead last in the Eastern Conference with 54 points and could be skating without two of their best forwards as veteran Thomas Vanek is out indefinitely with a lower body injury and Gustav Nyquist could miss a few games after a high-sticking incident in Sunday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota. The 27-year-old winger hit Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face, drawing blood with the blade of his stick and served a 4-minute double minor. Nyquist will have an in-person hearing in New York soon, which suggests he could miss as many as six games. As for Vanek, the club's leading goal-scorer with 14 and second in points with 36, this further handcuffs a Detroit offense that has scored three goals or fewer in 10 of its last 11 games. The Blues have started to get back on the right track under new coach Mike Yeo with wins in five of their last six. Wingers Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Read more

College Basketball Gambling: NC State situation somehow turning even more toxic

02.15.2017     09:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Currently residing on the front page of ESPN.com is an article titled, "Sources: Mark Gottfried likely out at NC State, barring late surge." Awkward timing considering the Wolf Pack have a game tonight against rival North Carolina. Gottfried's days are without a doubt numbered as his team enters tonight of a five-game losing streak (0-5 ATS). And it's never a good thing when an unnamed coach within your league calls your team out for not playing hard. Despite having a sure-fire first round draft pick in Dennis Smith, NC State has suffered conference losses of 18, 51 (!!!), 25, 24, and 30.

"They have more than enough talent to get to the NCAA tourney," one ACC coach told ESPN. "They just don't play hard at all."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Penn State Nittany Lions at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Penn State at Nebraska -4.5 O/U 141
Recommendation: Nebraska

Teams in this contest are on even footing from an overall talent standpoint but willing to take a stance with the home team Huskers tonight for a pair of reasons. Penn State has risen up the Big Ten power ratings ladder over the last couple of games registering an upset home win over Maryland followed an 83-70 win at Illinois on Saturday. However, their current 3-2 SU/ATS stretch could be more a product of a weak schedule rather than massive improvement. A close look shows four of the five recent Nittany Lions games have been against teams in the Big Ten’s bottom five. Maryland is the only team during this span with a record above .500 in league play. Contrary to that, Nebraska enters off of a difficult five game schedule where they faced four teams above .500 in conference action. Included in those contests are a home win over second place Purdue and a 70-69 OT loss at league kingpin Wisconsin. Tonight they get a very young Penn State team inside a sold out Pinnacle Bank Arena so figure Nebraska to play with extreme energy.

MLB Handicapping: Chicago Cubs could be good team to fade during spring training

02.14.2017     10:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
MLB spring training starts next week which means plenty of betting opportunities. One team that should draw a lot of interest is the Chicago Cubs who are off of last year's historic World Series title. The Cubs are obviously in position to contend again in 2017 and Joe Maddon has already made it clear that they won't attempt to hit the ground running. Note that in Maddon's first season in Chicago, the Cubs went 15-17 in spring training and only 11-19 in 2016.

“I’m going to be really aware of resting people,” Maddon said at the winter fan convention. “I am. You hear me say it all the time. There are natural reasons built in to rest people. I really want to be cognizant from the beginning of not stepping on anyone too hard.”

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ball State Cardinals at Northern Illinois Huskies

Ball State at Northern Illinois -2.5 O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Over

Ball State has been a dead nuts "over" team for much of the MAC season. On the year the Cardinals are 10-2 O/U in league play with the lowest closing total coming in at 146. Tonight, they travel to Northern Illinois who has also played "over" basketball with a record of 9-3 O/U vs. the MAC. The Huskies however don't play at a particularly fast pace and currently own the league's top defensive efficiency mark. But dig a little and you'll notice that NIU's defense, while solid, is far from elite thanks to a very favorable schedule. In games against the top five offenses in the MAC, Northern Illinois allowed 72, 76, 83, 76, and 78. All five of those games topped tonight's total of 141.5. Ball State has the sixth-ranked offense but also averages nearly 75 possessions per game. And they've been very consistent with that pace. Of BSU's 12 league games, all but two had 72 possessions or more. On the flip side, NIU should be sitting on a solid offensive performance after two clunkers on the road. Ball State grades out as average at best defensively. The Cardinals have Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: If you've been betting on SEC road teams, you're probably rich

02.14.2017     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By this point in the season, you are probably aware that the SEC isn't very good. Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina are all solid and sure-fire tournament teams but beyond that, it's pretty messy. And by messy, we mean a lot of mediocre basketball. One interesting stat in the SEC this year is how bad home courts have been. Last season, the SEC ranked second out of 32 leagues with a home straight up winning percentage of 69.8%. This season has been the complete opposite. Heading into tonight's games, home teams have won 43 of 84 games which is barely over 50%. Compared to the rest of the power conference world -- ACC (68.1%), PAC-12 (61.5%), Big XII (61.3%), Big East (59.4%), Big Ten (58.6%) -- that's horrific. And let's not forget the automatic win when Missouri rolls into town. But where it really starts to get noteworthy is the spread records of those road teams. How about 51-32-1 ATS or 61.4%!

SEC SU/ATS Road Record
South Carolina (5-1 SU, 3-2-1 ATS)
Florida (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Alabama (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Kentucky (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Arkansas (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Vanderbilt (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS)
Tennessee (3-3 SU, Read more
