College Basketball Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Fresno State Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos

Fresno State +4.5 at Boise State O/U 147
Recommendation: Fresno State

Entirely different betting directions being taken by these teams as Fresno State is on a 3-0 ATS and 4-0 O/U run while Boise has current streaks of 0-6 ATS and 4-0 O/U. The conflicting trends combined with the earlier 89-80 Fresno win way back on January 14 give no immediate handicapping edge to a certain side or total. However, there are some additional technical trends that directly point to the visiting Bulldogs here. The strongest are Boise’s 0-6 ATS mark in its last six home games and 0-5 record as a favorite since January 25. Fresno meanwhile has gone 6-3 ATS as a road underdog and the underdog in this series is 7-3 over the last 10 meetings.

The fundamentals are close but Fresno does have a distinct advantage on the defensive glass while Boise is the better three point shooting team. In the first game, Fresno had six double digit scorers, shot 22/38/57.9% from two-point range and went to the free throw line 43 times (+13 attempts, +11 points). Boise on the other hand shot nearly 50% of their field goal attempts (31 of 63) from Read more

College Basketball Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oklahoma State Cowboys at Iowa State Cyclones

Oklahoma State at Iowa State -3 O/U 162.5
Recommendation: Under

We're in the dog days of power conference play with many teams wrapping up the regular season this weekend. That of course means a lot of second meetings and plenty of familiarity. Iowa State and Oklahoma State last saw one another back in mid-January with the Cyclones winning a high scoring affair, 96-86 in Stillwater. While ISU hasn't changed its stripes much that same cannot be said for the Cowboys who completely overhauled their defensive philosophy. Rather than run up and down and press, OSU is playing a much more controlled brand of basketball. They've ditched the high-pressure defense and instead focused on containment. It's paid off in a big way as Oklahoma State has won 10 of 11 with seven of those games going under the total. This has also led to a slower pace with seven of those games failing to top 70 possessions. If tonight's game hovers around that 70-possession mark there's a good chance we can cash in on the under. Note that the first meeting closed 158.5 and that was with Oklahoma State playing crazy fast and next to no defense.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bettors gear up for mid-major conference tournaments

02.28.2017     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Conference tournaments are officially underway which means plenty of betting opportunities including those in the futures market. Let's take a look at a few conferences and their odds to earn a berth in the Big Dance.

Bucknell plays in the "non-boarded" Patriot League and is nearly a -200 favorite to cut down the nets. Note that Bison rank 80th according to Ken Pom; a spot below Monmouth and four spots ahead of Belmont -- two very well regarded mid-majors. Don't sleep on second seed Lehigh (+280) who swept Bucknell by 11 and 8 points during the regular season.

Winthrop (-120) is a short favorite over UNC Asheville (+125) to win the Big South. The two teams split during the regular season with both games decided by three points. Note that after the first round, all games will be played at Winthrop.

Belmont (-170) is yet again the favorite to win the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament which is played in the Bruins' hometown of Nashville. Belmont finished first in the OVC in both offensive and defensive efficiency and lost only one regular season game. Of their 15 league wins, only four were decided by single digits.

NHL Handicapping: Targeting teams to make money on the second half of the season

02.27.2017     11:40 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As the NHL season approaches Wednesday’s trade deadline, it is time to take a look at some teams that I have targeted as “bet on” and “bet against” moving forward.

The Boston Bruins stand out as a potential “bet on” squad. Boston has enjoyed a rejuvenation of energy and team chemistry after dismissing head coach Claude Julien and handing it over to interim Bruce Cassidy. The Bruins are 6-1 since the coaching change and have scored 3+ goals in all but one of those games. Cassidy put an emphasis on wanting his team attack more offensively which explains why they over on a 4-2-1 O/U run under his watch. But while the offense has enjoyed an uptick in production, defense and goaltending that will determine just how far they go. The Bruins have an aging, slow of foot Zdeno Chara anchoring the blue line and a bunch of newcomers and youngsters on the back end. Adam McQuaid and Torrey Krug are solid defenders but this unit is still a work in progress.

The Nashville Predators have underachieved at times this season but have played their best stretch of hockey of the season with three straight wins. Their offense has been on fire of Read more

College Basketball Betting: Virginia a rare home underdog to North Carolina

02.27.2017     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's been a long time since Virginia was a home underdog like it is tonight against North Carolina. The Cavaliers were last catching points on their home court back in 2012 when the Tar Heels were laying -3.5 and won 54-51. But it looks as if the betting markets are starting to sour on this squad after losing four of five including a 65-41 blowout loss at UNC back on Feb. 18. The normally efficient Cavs have really struggled to score of late; 0.92 points per possession over their last five games. UNC opened -1.5 but has since been bet up to -3.5.

MLB continues to consider possibility of sports betting

02.27.2017     09:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Major League Baseball continues to be open to the idea that sports betting isn't such a bad thing.

“We have done some research on how gambling relates to fan engagement. There’s a lot of information for example in Europe where it’s much more common in terms of legalized gambling.

I think from our perspective, from baseball’s perspective, it’s clear there’s a conversation about gambling that’s ongoing. [NBA] Commissioner Adam Silver has been very articulate about posing the issues.

And I think it’s incumbent upon us to make sure we understand what the facts are, what kind of legalized gambling are you talking about, how would it be regulated, what are the threats to the integrity of the sport. And make sure the institution is in a position to deal with whatever roads come down the road.”

NBA Gambling: Betting results following DeMarcus Cousins trade

We got to thinking -- wouldn't it be funny, interesting and perhaps logical if the Sacramento Kings got better following the departure of DeMarcus Cousins and the New Orleans Pelicans got worse? We admit, last night's results -- Kings won outright as +7 dogs and the Pelicans got housed by the Rockets -- helped get Read more
