NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma City +1 at Portland O/U 219.5
Recommendation: Oklahoma City

There’s no comparison between the Thunder and the Trail Blazers right now, making this short pointspread look very attractive to this bettor! Portland is in a world of hurt.  The Blazers are returning home off a losing road trip that culminated in another fourth quarter turnover fueled meltdown and subsequent OT loss at Detroit. They haven’t won a home game since January, losing each of their last three games on this floor both SU and ATS.  And the quotes coming out of Terry Stotts locker room aren’t exactly reeking with confidence these days.

Damian Lillard: “We're frustrated. We played a good game outside of turnovers. We feel like we should have won the game. We should be happy going on this flight (to Portland) with a 'W' and a 2-1 trip, but we're not.  That's disappointing.”  Portland will be hard pressed to match their 52% shooting effort that they put up against the Pistons.  And the Blazers weakness in the paint is a real problem against a team like OKC.

NHL Handicapper Betting Free Pick: New York Islanders at Dallas Stars

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York +105 at Dallas O/U 6
Recommendation: New York

This is a prime spot for a strong, focused effort from the New York Islanders against a very beatable foe as they travel to Dallas to take on Stars. New York hasn’t played since Saturday when they got absolutely ambushed by the Columbus Blue Jackets in a humiliating 7-0 defeat. The Isles have had four days of practice time to get that bad loss out of their system and I expect them to bring a massive performance tonight. The team called up promising prospect Josh Ho-Sang who will make his NHL debut and play on a line with Brock Nelson and Andrew Ladd. Ho-Sang’s call up should generate an extra spark for this team. New York has a strong 6-1 record in their last seven games when they have allowed five or more goals in the previous game. The Islanders are 4-0 in their last four games when coming off a loss of 3+ goals and they also have a strong 11-5 record against Western Conference this season. Dallas is coming off a comeback 3-2 win against Pittsburgh but the Stars have not been able to at any point to string wins together as evidenced by their miserable 6-22 record in their last 28 Read more

College Basketball Betting: Whoever wins this year's title is likely to be elite on the defensive end

03.02.2017     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
They say that defense wins championships and nowhere is this more true than college basketball. Below is a list of the last 15 National Champions and their defensive efficiency and rank. You'll notice a common theme; all but one of them finished in the top 20. The lone exception was North Carolina who finished 21st and it should be noted the Tar Heels boasted the nation's top offensive efficiency. One of the reasons we pointed this out is that UCLA is among those currently favored to cut down the nets. Most sportsbooks have the Bruins lumped in with Gonzaga, Villanova, North Carolina and Kansas as the "first tier." What stands out is UCLA isn't in the top 20 in defensive efficiency. They aren't even in the top 50. To their credit, the Bruins have improved on the defensive end but with a week to go in the regular season, they currently rank 90th at 1.00 points per possession allowed. No champion during that 15-year span has allowed over 0.90 ppp; though that could change this year as only four teams (Virginia, South Carolina, Gonzaga and Florida) are holding teams to less than 0.90 ppp.

Another group attempts to fight federal ban on sports betting

Another organization pushing to repeal the archaic Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.

“Legalizing sports betting would produce substantial social and political benefits by exposing billions of dollars in economic activity to the sunshine of legitimacy,” said Minton, a Competitive Enterprise Institute fellow specializing in consumer policy.

“Decriminalization would renew respect for the law by individuals who see gambling on sports as a valid form of entertainment for adults. Allowing bookies and authorities to work together to stop match fixing — which is in both of their interests — would bolster the integrity of sports,” she said.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bettors gear up for mid-major conference tournaments Part II

03.02.2017     09:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More mid-major conferences get their respective tournament underway today and tomorrow. Let's take a look at some of their futures odds courtesy of 5Dimes.

Horizon - For the second straight year, the tournament will be held at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Note that the format has changed as the top two seeds no longer get the "double bye" into the semifinals. Valparaiso (+160) and Oakland (+170) are the top seeds and betting favorites. Last year's winner, Green Bay, is +500.

Colonial - Same format as Horizon with 7/10 and 8/9 play-in games and byes for seeds 1-6. UNC-Wilmington is the top seed and favorite at +160 followed by Charleston at +175. The entire tournament takes place in Charleston.

West Coast - No surprise that Gonzaga in the heavy favorite at -400. Second seed St. Mary's is +340. The entire tournament will be played as Las Vegas' Orleans Arena. It's been held there every year since 2009.

MAAC - Monmouth, who hasn't lost a game since Jan. 2, is the top seed and favorite at +135. Siena (+340), St. Peter's (+365) and Iona (+440) are the main contenders. Tournament takes place in Albany at Siena's home gym. Read more
