College Basketball Gambling: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Three years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

Here is a list of the last 19 NCAA champions and the teams they beat in the title game: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Missouri and LSU play SEC Tournament with lame duck coaches

03.08.2017     08:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Win one for the Gipper or let's get this over with ASAP is the question most bettors have when handicapping teams with lame duck head coaches during the postseason. Yesterday, NC State and Mark Gottfried made it clear the offseason was the preferred route as the Wolfpack fell to mediocre Clemson, 75-61. Tonight, Missouri and LSU take the floor for the SEC Tournament. Kim Anderson was asked to step down after the season concludes and multiple reports indicate Johnny Jones will suffer the same fate. Mizzou has actually covered six of their last nine games and in theory don't need its A-game to compete with first round opponent Auburn. The same can be said about LSU who faces a sub-par -- even by SEC standards -- Mississippi State squad. All that being said, there isn't much to indicate either squad is primed to play their best basketball of the season. And while that level of effort isn't mandatory to cover the pointspread, it wouldn't shock us to see both squads pack it in in an attempt to move on from their respective disastrous campaigns.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Winnipeg Jets

Pittsburgh -135 at Winnipeg O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

The Winnipeg Jets host the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins tonight in a battle of two superstar scorers; veteran captain Sidney Crosby and Jets rookie phenom Patrick Laine. The 18-year old Swede leads all first-year skaters and is second overall in the league in goals with 32. Two-time MVP Crosby leads the NHL with 34 goals and is third overall in points with 69. The Penguins are in a very tight Metropolitan Division race, currently tied with Columbus for second place with 88 points and two points ahead of the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh knows it has no room for error as it embarks on a tough five-game road trip. With 18 games remaining, even a short losing streak could send the Pens down to the Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and possibly out of their division quadrant for the first two rounds of the playoffs. Pittsburgh has earned a point in seven of their last 10 games but has struggled on the road as of late, dropping four of their last five games away from the PPG Paints Center. Winnipeg has lost eight of its last 13 contests overall and hasn't been able Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Portland Trail Blazers at Oklahoma City Thunder

Portland at Oklahoma City -6.5 O/U 221.5
Recommendation: Under

Important contest for both of these squads as OKC looks to end three game losing streak while Portland is trying to climb into the Western Conference playoff picture (2 games out of the #8 slot). Billy Donovan once again had to let his team know that their defensive focus isn’t playoff caliber after they were shredded for 112 points per game during their recent 0-3 road trip. Expect defense to be the #1 priority tonight for Oklahoma City against the Blazers who put 114 on the Thunder just five nights ago. Portland has had defensive issues of its own since the beginning of February allowing an average of 111.5 ppg and at least 103 in all 11 games. Interesting to note that Portland has scored 114 in each of their home contests vs. OKC but only posted 99 in their lone visit here to Chesapeake Arena. The season matchups have totaled 209, 204 and 223 with the home team covering in all three. Oklahoma City has been especially good at home going 21-9 against the spread thus far this season.

These teams like to play high tempo and each team owns a top 10 NBA ranking in Read more

College Basketball Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Mary's Gaels vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

St. Mary's vs. Gonzaga -5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Gonzaga

Gonzaga and St. Mary's hook up tonight for the West Coast Conference Championship at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Both teams had an easy go of it en route to the finals, particularly the Gaels who won by margins of 23 and 31. Tonight serves as a far tougher task however as Gonzaga's size, length, and athleticism gave St. Mary's a ton of problems in the two regular season meetings. The Zags won and covered both games by simply owning the paint. Combined, Gonzaga shot 49-of-77, 64% from 2-point range compared to 37-of-86, 43% for St. Mary's. The Zags also unsurprisingly shot 14 more free throws. And the one advantage St. Mary's was supposed to have -- 3-point shooting -- never panned out as Gonzaga shot a combined 10-of-21, 48% while St. Mary's hit on only 10-of-31, 32%. All told, Gonzaga scored 153 points on 124 possessions which comes out to 1.23 points per possession; a mark that is actually higher than their season average in WCC play. And while it looks impressive that the Gaels have routinely held teams in the 50's, note that Gonzaga's stop unit is over 5 ppg Read more
