MLB Handicapping: Cleveland Indians poised for run, but bettors beware

06.28.2017     11:40 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Cleveland Indians hold only a half-game lead in the American League Central but there are plenty of indications the Tribe will pull away at some point. For starters, Pythagorean W-L records show the Tribe have underachieved whereas the Twins and Royals have overachieved. Based on runs scored and allowed, Cleveland should be 43-33 while Minnesota and Kansas City check in at 33-42. Chicago, which is seven games out, has actually played .500 baseball from a runs score/allowed standpoint while Detroit, slightly worse at 36-40.

One of the main reason Cleveland is poised for better fortunes on the horizon is that nearly the entire starting staff has outpitched its ERA. Check out the numbers below. Bauer, Tomlin, and Salazar all have their faults but have also pitched way better than their ERA suggests.

Corey Kluber: 3.24 ERA, 2.81 xFIP
Carlos Carrasco: 3.67 ERA, 3.51 xFIP
Trevor Bauer: 5.53 ERA, 3.64 xFIP
Josh Tomlin: 6.09 ERA, 4.20 xFIP
*Danny Salazar: 5.40 ERA, 3.57 xFIP

*Salazar currently on the DL but slated to return shortly.

But we're hardly the only ones to spot that Cleveland should be better than its overall record. Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants

Colorado (Freeland) -120 at San Francisco (Blach) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Expect the ball to be put in play and some this afternoon with Colorado's Kyle Freeland facing San Francisco's Ty Blach. Combined, the two lefties have tossed 167 innings and recorded only 88 strikeouts. And in 48 plate appearances, opposing pitchers have struck out only eight times against the soft-tossing duo. Regression has hit Blach in a big way. Over his first eight starts he flashed a 3.08 ERA including a complete game shutout vs. Philadelphia. Since that outing, he's been tagged for 22 runs in 21.1 innings. Freeland is perhaps a little more protected against a hard regression in that he garners a ton of ground balls (58.5%). But since his hot start (6 starts, 2.65 ERA) he's been far more hittable (9 starts, .295 BAA against, 8 home runs, 4.36 ERA). A few more starts at Coors and a Denver heat wave will be all it takes to see his numbers really start to bottom out. The question, however, is can these two below average offenses take advantage? Temps are expected to be in the low 60's but the wind is blowing out to left center which with two lefties on Read more

MLB Handicapping: Starting pitcher to fade moving forward

06.27.2017     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
While offense and ERA's remain on the rise, there are a handful of starting pitchers that have skirted around it as we near the All-Star Break. FanGraphs put together a list of arms that are primed for regression in the coming months. At the top of the list are a few obviously candidates. Texas' Andrew Cashner has gone from swing-and-miss to pitch-to-contact arm with a K per 9 rate of only 4.28. His xFIP (5.43) is nearly two runs higher than his ERA (3.50). Chicago's Mike Pelfrey should undoubtedly be a victim of the assumed "juiced ball" movement yet he's carting around a 3.73 ERA. And KC's Jason Vargas continues to give up boatloads of fly balls that rarely leave the yard (6.6% HR/FB rate). He's sitting on a 2.29 ERA.

Supreme Court will (eventually) hear New Jersey sports betting case

In the Little Engine That Could-esque fashion, New Jersey will have its case heard by the Supreme Court as it tries to overturn the archaic Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh Pirates

Tampa Bay (Cobb) -105 at Pittsburgh (Williams) O/U 9
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

Different year, same result as the American League continues to dominate the National League in Interleague play. Heading into tonight's action, the AL is 83-59 +20 units of profit on the season. We can grab a near pick 'em price on Tampa Bay and starting pitcher Alex Cobb as the Rays open a series at Pittsburgh. Tampa has won five of its seven interleague games this season and has a very strong track record vs. right-handed pitching with a 31-22 mark and 117 wRC+ which ranks third in MLB. They'll face a very hittable arm in Trevor Williams who as a starter owns a 5.01 ERA over nine starts. Cobb is still trying to regain the form he had in 2014 when he flashed a 2.87 ERA over 27 starts. Arm difficulties and age have left him with slightly better than marginal stuff but his body of work is actually rock solid (4.05 ERA, 4.15 FIP). He's primed for success tonight against a mediocre lineup in a National League park. Money in this one should continue to trickle in on road side. At current pick 'em price, that's the preferred play.
