College Football Handicapping: With new OC, Notre Dame seeks faster tempo

08.02.2017     10:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Not a lot went right for Notre Dame last season. The Irish were probably better than their 4-8 record (4 losses by a field goal or less) but there was rarely a game where both the offense and defense showed up. Head coach Brian Kelly, who is obviously on the hot seat, brought in offensive coordinator Chip Long to spark a unit that is only two years removed from averaging over 7 yards per play. Long served as Memphis' OC last season. Despite losing head coach Justin Fuentes and quarterback Paxton Lynch, the offense actually average slightly more yards per play under Long. News out of camp indicates that Notre Dame will look to play at a much faster tempo this season.

“We have the potential to score in the first two plays,” Adams said Tuesday following Notre Dame’s first practice of the season at Culver Academies. “Obviously as an offense, that’s what you want, to score as fast as you can. We’re conditioned to play fast.”

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers

08.02.2017     09:41 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Otto Sports blog entry.
St. Louis (Weaver) at Milwaukee (Suter) -115 O/U 9
Recommendation: Under

Two young but capable arms take the hill tonight in Milwaukee with Luke Weaver getting the nod for the Cardinals and the Brewers countering with Brent Suter. Weaver, a former first round pick in 2014, is filling in for the injured Adam Wainwright. Outside of coughing up a grand slam in his last start, Weaver pitched well with five strikeouts and five hits over five innings. He faces a Brewers offense that has come crashing down to earth of late with just 3.1 runs per game and alarmingly bad splits (.227/.297/.357/.654) over its last 16 games. During that span, Milwaukee's offense was held to two runs or fewer nine times. Suter has been nothing short of phenomenal since being called up from Triple-A. The Harvard grad throws a lot of strikes and does well changing speeds. Last time out, he threw seven shutout innings against the Cubs. His stat line over his last five starts, which included the Cubs, Orioles and Yankees, reads: 30 IP, 25 Ks, 5 BBs, 1.50 ERA. Chicago manager Joe Maddon had nothing but praise for Suter: “We could not get anything going against Read more

College Football Betting: Rutgers looks to go more traditional route on offense

08.02.2017     09:19 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In terms of yards per play, no team averaged fewer (4.13) than the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last season. This after posting a respectable 5.61 ypp in 2015. Changes of course were made, the most notable being the somewhat odd hiring of former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill to serve as offensive coordinator. It's hard to label exactly what system Rutgers was attempting to run a season ago. Articles here and here suggest Kill will attempt to go the more traditional route by utilizing the run game and tight ends. There however remain lots of questions as to who will be in charge of taking snaps and blocking up front. The good news is the Scarlet Knights can lose by four touchdowns in their season opener vs. Washington and still cover the pointspread.

When asked about the state of the offensive line, Kill smiled and said, “Talk to me in three weeks (and)

Oddsmakers continue to see one-sided action on Mayweather-McGregor

08.01.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Las Vegas bookmakers weigh in on the Mayweather-McGregor "fight."

"This should be the easiest fight that any bookmaker's ever booked," Vaccaro quipped. "The general public is much more involved these days, and you know their hole cards. They're going to bet the big dog, and you'll know closer to the fight what number the big guys are salivating to lay."

"You make a number based on what type of money and flow of money that you would expect at the counters," Kornegay added. "It's not necessarily the true odds; it's just reflective of the betting patterns that we expect to see. Since we opened [minus] 2,500 and it's now down to [minus] 700 ... that's how close we were."

College Football Handicapping: North Carolina attempts to reload entire offense

08.01.2017     09:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
A lot of roster turnover, particularly on offense, for the North Carolina Tar Heels this season. And don't sleep on the loss of defensive coordinator Gene Chizik (resigned). The year prior to Chizik arriving, UNC ranked dead last in the ACC in yards per play allowed in conference play (6.28). Last season, a semi-respectable ninth (5.47 ypp). The Tar Heels open the season as -12.5 home chalk vs. California.

“Never,” he said recently, contemplating the work ahead, both for his coaching staff and his offense. “Not to this extent. They said it was 90-something percent of the offensive production left. I don’t know how many guys have ever done that. So at least nobody that I’ve reached out to. So it’s – we’ll see.”

Golf pros gamble to stay sharp

08.01.2017     09:01 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Cool article by an unnamed PGA pro discussing the ins and outs of gambling on the tour. Hint: It's pretty damn popular.

The other thing you won't find on the PGA Tour is Venmo or PayPal. All debts are settled in cash. Not paying within 24 hours is grounds for public humiliation, which usually means getting called out on the range, though guys have taken to social media, too. When I go on the road, my last stop before the airport is always the bank.
