NFL Preseason Betting: 49ers to give starters extended look

08.08.2017     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's work to be done in San Francisco with new management and head coach. General manager John Lynch said that the team's starters will see more playing time than usual during the team's preseason opener at Kansas City. The Chiefs are currently -4 home chalk.

“We’re a new group,” Lynch said. “We understand that even though we have some guys who have kind of earned that right (to sit out the majority of the preseason), we need them to play. Because we need to evaluate the team as a whole.

“There will be some guys who play less, and some of that may be health related, but really Kyle (Shanahan) and I have talked about, ‘hey we need snaps.’”[:END-QUOTE:

NFL Preseason Gambling: Green Bay's offense should thrive with Hundley under center

08.08.2017     11:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two years ago, Green Bay rookie quarterback Brett Hundley posted big numbers during the preseason (630 yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT). Last season, he barely played due to a bum ankle. Hundley is now healthy and slated to start Green Bay's preseason opener on Thursday vs. Philadelphia. Without Hundley, the Packers went under the total in all four preseason games last year. In two preseason games in 2015 in which Hundley took a majority of the snaps, Green Bay scored 26 and 38 points which both games flying over the total.

Asked what he’s looking for from Hundley, Van Pelt said, “Operating within the system, making the checks that he needs to make, any protection adjustments that need to be made. And then after that, just the rhythm of the feet and staying in his time clock and working progressions. I think he’s done a really good job of that. This last week we’re really proud of the way he’s practiced.

“I think

Not everyone is lining up to bet Conor McGregor

08.08.2017     08:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You knew at some point there was going to be Floyd Mayweather money, especially after all of the talk about the "public" reportedly betting the shit out of Conor McGregor. Note that one Las Vegas sportsbook director hints that if you like Floyd, you may be able to get around -500 closer to fight night.

“That really balances things out,” Westgate sports book director Jay Kornegay said. “The Mayweather money showed up a little earlier than we thought it would. I think it got all the way down to (minus-)625 when they started laying Mayweather money. I thought it was going to drop lower and it still might.”

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Wacha) -120 at Kansas City (Vargas) O/U 9
Recommendation: Under

St. Louis' Michael Wacha has somewhat flown under the radar this season as he continues to hover between elite and very good NL starter. Of late, he's been elite and some with a sick stat line over his last six starts: 36.2 IP, 42 Ks, 8 BBs, 1.96 ERA. On the season, Wacha is right at a strikeout per inning and keeps the ball on the ground more often than not with only 11 home runs allowed. And while some may feel pitching in the American League park will mark a step up in class, the Royals are a very manageable offense. Kansas City put together a recent nine-game winning streak that put them in "contention" in the AL Central. But outside of that small sample (7.4 runs per game), this team and more importantly, offense, has been well below league average. Offensively, the Royals rank dead last in the AL in wRC+ (88). It's a low walk rate, low on-base pct. outfit that will be without the services of one of it's better offensive weapons with Salvador Perez currently on the DL. There's been a strong move to fade KC's Jason Vargas over his last few starts, Read more

NFL Gambling News: Needing a warm body, Miami inks Jay Cutler

08.07.2017     08:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jay Cutler doesn't come off as the type of guy who at this stage in his career really wants to play. He's 34 years old, banged up, and presumably has enough money to live out his days comfortably. That changed when the Miami Dolphins lost Ryan Tannehill (knee) and lured Cutler out of "retirement." The common theory behind the move is that Miami head coach Adam Gase was “responsible” for Cutler's "best" season back in 2015. Never mind the fact that current backup Matt Moore has been with the Dolphins since 2012 and went a respectable 2-1 as a starter last season. Cutler, meanwhile, went 17-29 over his last four seasons, including 6-9 during the aforementioned "best" season under Gase. Miami's regular season Week 1 game vs. Tampa Bay was taken off the board. The Dolphins opened -3 but were bet down to -1/pick 'em prior to Tannehill's injury.

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Minnesota's Zimmer hands over defensive play calling duties

08.07.2017     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've preached that against the spread success or failures in the preseason by and large don't carry over year to year. The one recent exception to that has been the Minnesota Vikings under head coach Mike Zimmer. Over his first three seasons, Zimmer is 11-2 ATS during the preseason -- as well as 32-16 ATS during the regular season and 1-0 ATS in the playoffs. One theory behind Minnesota's exhibition success is Zimmer's emphasis on fundamentals and tackling. In 13 preseason games, the Vikings' defense allowed 13.8 ppg. We're curious though whether or not Minnesota's preseason success will carry over this year with Zimmer -- at least initially -- relinquishing defensive play calling duties. Here's a guy that has called plays for nearly his entire 17-year career as an NFL coordinator and head coach. After opening +1 at Buffalo for Thursday's preseason opener, Minnesota is now -1 favorites.

“I’ll probably have [Edwards] call one in a preseason game and see how it goes,” Zimmer said. “I
