College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers

Ohio State at Indiana
Thursday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: 53
CRIS Current: 56.5
Recommendation: Under

The Indiana Hoosiers certainly weren’t an Under team in the Kevin Wilson era. Wilson emphasized pushing the pace on offense, and the Indiana defense paid the price, allowing at least 33 points per game in the first five years that Wilson was in Bloomington.

That all changed last year. First year defensive coordinator Tom Allen actually had some talent to work with and he crafted a truly dramatic improvement . After allowing 38 points and 510 yards per game in 2015, the Hoosiers allowed only 27 points and 380 yards per game last year.

The Indiana defense is primed to be even better in 2017. Allen is now the head coach, and the team has taken a ‘defense first’ mentality throughout camp. Indiana returns nine starters on their stop unit, seven of them seniors. Expect the Indiana defense to be improved once again in 2017; their best defense in more than a decade.

Kevin Wilson is now Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: New York Jets are taking Week 4 seriously

08.30.2017     06:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Savor this moment, bettors, because while not eclipse-like, it's not going to be a regular occurrence. The New York Jets are currently favored to win a football game. Yes, Thursday's preseason finale vs. the Eagles shows has the Jets currently -1 home chalk. And it sounds as if head coach Todd Bowles is taking the game rather seriously.

“Football is football,” Bowles said during a conference call. “It doesn’t matter who we play. Everybody is available to play. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the quarterback, the punter, the snapper, and I’ll play them as I see fit.”

NF Preseason Gambling: Minnesota's starters may see action vs. Miami

UPDATE

Heading into Week 2 of the preseason, Minnesota's Mike Zimmer hinted that he was going to be cautious with the playing time of his starters moving forward. Fast forward two weeks, and now Zimmer claims his starters -- specifically the defense -- may see action Thursday after getting carved up by San Francisco's first-string offense. The Vikings are currently -3 home chalk vs. Miami.

“I’ve made up my mind, but I haven’t told the team yet or anything like that; I haven’t told the coaches yet either,” Zimmer said after Tuesday’s practice. “But after the other night I feel like they should play so we’ll see.”

“The touchdowns they had, that wasn’t anything where there was some funky call or something like that,” Zimmer said, acknowledging that preseason challenges can help better prepare the team for the

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's offenses wants to be more dynamic

08.29.2017     12:49 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You don't generally think of "explosiveness" when handicapping Wisconsin's offense. Last season, the Badgers recorded only 23 plays of 30 yards or longer; similar to that of Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kansas. This year's group vows to create more "big plays." Saturday's opponent, Utah State, was one of the better teams nationally in 2016 at not allowing big gainers (only 45 plays of 20+ yards).

“We need to get back to being explosive, not just being a defensive team,” redshirt junior offensive lineman Michael Deiter said. “We need to take games over (offensively) and that is something we’ve been working at for two years.”

“Obviously, you can take a defense’s will away by driving 18 plays,” Deiter said. “But you can also take a defense’s will away by going out (scoring) in three plays.

NFL Betting News: It sure doesn't sound like Andrew Luck is ready for the regular season

08.29.2017     09:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you haven't been following the Andrew Luck saga, you should be. With each passing day it gets more and more obvious that Luck's shoulder is still not healed. Yet, here we have head coach Chuck Pagano acting like someone asked him to solve a riddle. Here's a great editorial that senses this whole thing is a scam. In the end, bettors had better get ready for Scott Tolzien or Stephen Morris.

"That's a great question," he said, pausing behind the microphone. "You guys are trying to find a way to get to the end result here. Almost got me."

"I'm not a bookie," he said. "I'm not an odds maker. So I'm not allowed to put numbers on things like that."

The Colts open the 2017 NFL season on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams. That’s 13 days from Monday, the day Chuck Pagano was professing to have not seen his

College Football Gambling: USC says it isn't looking past Western Michigan

08.29.2017     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After weathering the storm of a 1-3 SU/ATS start, USC finished last season with nine straight wins; seven of which covered the number. The Trojans won't start 1-3 this season with three of four at home including Week 1's opener vs. Western Michigan. Head coach Clay Helton though isn't taking any chances. Despite playing host to Stanford in Week 2 and then Texas in Week 3, Helton sounds as if he's hellbent on crushing everyone. The betting markets are on board with that concept: USC opened -23.5 over WMU and was bet up to -27.

Appearing on CBS Sports Radio last week, Helton noted that toward the end of last season, “everybody was talking about us at the end of the year, ‘Oh yeah, you’re probably one of the best four teams. Maybe you were a playoff team.’

“Well, the reality is we were a three-loss team, and that’s not going to get you into the playoffs,” Helton said. “What we learned as a team and as a football family is every dang game counts.”
