College Football Betting Preview: Temple Owls at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Temple at Notre Dame
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener: Notre Dame -15 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -18.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Temple

We have seen heavy Notre Dame support in the betting markets with this line up from the opener of -11 to -18/-18.5 at most sportsbooks. There is no doubt Temple faces its share of challenges following last season’s fantastic output in which the Owls were the top pointspread team in the nation and won the AAC. Matt Rhule departed for Baylor and as a result, the Owls have a new head coach in Geoff Collins who was the former DC at Florida. Temple will be installing new systems and schemes on both sides of the football and they must replace their former starting quarterback Phillip Walker. Walker was erratic more times than not so his departure isn’t significant. But there is uncertainty at the position heading into the opener (a starter has yet to be named) although it appears that sophomore Logan Marchi has the inside track at the job. Whoever starts will not be devoid of pieces around him as Temple returns three Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at North Carolina Tar Heels

Calfornia at North Carolina
Saturday, 9:20 am PT - ACC Network
CRIS Opener: North Carolina -12.5 O/U 66
CRIS Current: North Carolina -13 O/U 55
Recommendation: Under

The overhaul at California is enormous. The Golden Bears have a new Head Coach in Justin Wilcox who is defensive minded which is the polar opposite of his predecessor Sonny Dykes. There is a new offensive system which is an up-tempo “spread” but very different from the “Bear Raid” employed here the past four seasons. Ex-Eastern Washington OC Beau Baldwin’s scheme is far more multiple and unlike the prior offense run here, it comes with a complex playbook. On the other side of the ball, Cal has scrapped the 4-3 in favor of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 alignment. The switch brings position changes, new assignments and the possibility that the talent on hand doesn’t completely fit the way it will down the road after a couple of more recruiting classes. While on paper 2017 does not look to be a great defensive season for California, it likely can’t be Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State Buckeyes at Indiana Hoosiers

Ohio State at Indiana
Thursday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: 53
CRIS Current: 56.5
Recommendation: Under

The Indiana Hoosiers certainly weren’t an Under team in the Kevin Wilson era. Wilson emphasized pushing the pace on offense, and the Indiana defense paid the price, allowing at least 33 points per game in the first five years that Wilson was in Bloomington.

That all changed last year. First year defensive coordinator Tom Allen actually had some talent to work with and he crafted a truly dramatic improvement . After allowing 38 points and 510 yards per game in 2015, the Hoosiers allowed only 27 points and 380 yards per game last year.

The Indiana defense is primed to be even better in 2017. Allen is now the head coach, and the team has taken a ‘defense first’ mentality throughout camp. Indiana returns nine starters on their stop unit, seven of them seniors. Expect the Indiana defense to be improved once again in 2017; their best defense in more than a decade.

Kevin Wilson is now Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: New York Jets are taking Week 4 seriously

08.30.2017     06:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Savor this moment, bettors, because while not eclipse-like, it's not going to be a regular occurrence. The New York Jets are currently favored to win a football game. Yes, Thursday's preseason finale vs. the Eagles shows has the Jets currently -1 home chalk. And it sounds as if head coach Todd Bowles is taking the game rather seriously.

“Football is football,” Bowles said during a conference call. “It doesn’t matter who we play. Everybody is available to play. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the quarterback, the punter, the snapper, and I’ll play them as I see fit.”

NF Preseason Gambling: Minnesota's starters may see action vs. Miami

08.30.2017     06:08 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Heading into Week 2 of the preseason, Minnesota's Mike Zimmer hinted that he was going to be cautious with the playing time of his starters moving forward. Fast forward two weeks, and now Zimmer claims his starters -- specifically the defense -- may see action Thursday after getting carved up by San Francisco's first-string offense. The Vikings are currently -3 home chalk vs. Miami.

“I’ve made up my mind, but I haven’t told the team yet or anything like that; I haven’t told the coaches yet either,” Zimmer said after Tuesday’s practice. “But after the other night I feel like they should play so we’ll see.”

“The touchdowns they had, that wasn’t anything where there was some funky call or something like that,” Zimmer said, acknowledging that preseason challenges can help better prepare the team for the
