NFL Handicapper Betting Preview: New York Jets at Buffalo Bills

NY Jets at Buffalo
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: Buffalo -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Buffalo -7.5 O/U 40
Recommendation: New York

The very first question I ask myself when I’m looking at an NFL pointspread is this: Does the favorite deserve to be favored in this price range? And my answer to that question when it comes to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 is a resounding "no way!"

For this pointspread to be categorized as reasonable, two things must be true. First, the Jets legitimately must be one of the very worst teams in NFL history. And secondly, the Bills have to be capable of beating an opponent by more than a touchdown. I’m not convinced that either is the case.

Make no mistake about it – the Jets are currently being priced like the worst team in NFL history. Last year’s 1-15 Browns were power rated by the markets higher than this year’s Jets squad. The 0-16 Lions from 2008 – the only winless team in the modern era – were -3.5 point road favorites at Atlanta on opening day. I’ve lived in Vegas Read more

College Football Betting: Reactions abound following Week 1's results

09.05.2017     12:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The biggest obstacle for college football bettors this week is what to make of Week 1's results. A lot of teams looked and performed far different than their preseason expectations. Below is a quick look at those teams that had "abnormal" Week 1 results and how the betting markets reacted.

Oregon - Crushed FCS Southern Utah 77-21. Opened -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately pounded to -14. The Cornhuskers were outgained in their 43-36 win over Arkansas State

Northwestern - Limped past rebuilding Nevada, 31-20. The Wildcats trailed 17-7 at half. This week's opponent, Duke, rolled over FCS NC Central, 60-7. The game opened a pick 'em with Northwestern now favored by -3.5.

East Carolina - No shame in losing to FCS James Madison as the Dukes are currently the top team in the country. But the manner in which the Pirates lost is perhaps alarming: JMU outgained ECU 614-367. ECU's Week 2 opponent, West Virginia, opened -19.5 and is now -24.

North Carolina - Laying -12.5 at home to rebuilding Cal, the Tar Heels lost 35-30. Week 2's foe, Louisville, was bet up from -6.5 to Read more

College Football Handicapping: Bettors are all over Oregon Ducks

09.05.2017     11:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a disastrous 2016 that saw just two pointspread covers in 12 tries, the Oregon Ducks appear to be back in the good graces of bettors. Last Saturday, Oregon rolled up 703 totals yards en route to a 77-21 win over FCS Southern Utah. Oregon opened -31 but closed -39.5. This week, more betting support with the Ducks opening -10 vs. Nebraska and immediately bet up to -14. The Cornhuskers won last year's meeting in Lincoln, 35-32. The game pushed.

NFL Gambling Update: With Luck out, Colts turn to Tolzien for Week 1

09.05.2017     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UPDATE

As expected, Andrew Luck is a no-go for Week 1's opener at the Los Angeles Rams. That means Scott Tolzien and his career 66.4 QB Rating will be under center. The Colts traded for New England's Jacoby Brissett which signals yet another red flag that Luck's shoulder is a mess. How much does Luck mean to the pointspread? The betting markets are saying about a touchdown as the Rams are currently -3.5 home chalk.

“That’s why we brought him here,’’ Chuck Pagano said of Brissett. “He’s no different than anybody else. He’s going to have an opportunity to compete.’’ However, he quickly added, “Scott is the starter. Again, he’s got to produce.

“Everybody’s got to produce.’’

College Football Betting: After historic loss, UNLV takes money for matchup at Idaho

09.05.2017     11:30 AM     Printer Friendly
Speaking of ridiculous outcomes, UNLV's loss to FCS Howard is being billed "the biggest upset in college football history." There are a lot of quality FCS teams. Just ask East Carolina who got blasted by top-ranked James Madison, at home, 34-14. But Howard isn't on that level. In fact, even with the victory over the Rebels, Sagarin has the Bison ranked 231st out of 254 FBS/FCS teams. The real question now becomes, do we bet on UNLV this week with it travels to Idaho? To compare, last season, UNLV closed -14.5 vs. Idaho but lost 33-30 in overtime. Now they are catching as much as a touchdown in Moscow. Below is the game's line history as of this afternoon. You can see that the initial money came in the Vandals but since then, UNLV has been the prefered side.

College Football Gambling: UCLA was at one point +30.5 in-game and won outright

09.05.2017     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
There were a lot of crazy Week 1 college football results, none crazier than UCLA's comeback win over Texas A&M. Down 34 late in the third quarter, the Bruins rallied back to win 45-44. It was an interesting game from a betting perspective as well. For starters, UCLA took a TON of money, closing as high as -7 after opening -3 (and for a short time bet down to -2.5). Then of course there was UCLA's in-game line progression from start to finish: -7.5, -4.5, pk, +6.5, +13.5, +14.5, +17.5, +20.5, +17.5, +21.5, +24.5, +28.5, +30.5, +26.5, +21.5, +18.5, +12.5, pk, and then this happened...
