Legalized sports betting continues to make strides

09.27.2017     10:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's be clear: legalized and regulated sports betting in the United State will eventually happen. Strides have been made, the public has spoken, and more or more people are realizing its lucrative potential. When the occurs is anyone's guess. Considering the glacial pace of the situation, we're putting even money it goes down within the next three years.

“Literally, we’re at the 1-yard line, and it’s first-and-goal,” said Daniel Wallach, a sports gaming law expert and attorney at Becker & Poliakoff in Fort Lauderdale.

College Football Gambling: Charlotte makes change at offensive coordinator

09.27.2017     10:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No wins (and no pointspread covers) for the Charlotte 49ers prompted head coach to Brad Lambert to make a few coaching changes over the weekend. Offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen was demoted and run-game coordinator Greg Adkins will take his place. The 49ers started 0-2 with expected losses to Eastern Michigan and Kansas State. But a 35-31 loss to FCS NC A&T and last week's 28-0 home loss to bottom feeder Georgia State was more than enough reason for Lambert to "shake things up." Charlotte has now failed to cover its last seven games dating back to last season. They travel to FIU this Saturday.

“No question, we need to be more competitive,” said Lambert. “Our players and coaches come in every day and work hard to win football games. But, we need a change, offensively. Coach Adkins has a lot of experience from an offensive standpoint and has coached at just about every level, including the NFL and (Power Five) conferences and we feel really good about what he can bring to that unit.”

College Football Betting News: Maryland hammered by more quarterback injuries

What you see below has not been photoshopped.

From beating Texas on the road to open the year to prepping your third and fourth string quarterbacks...such is life for the Maryland Terrapins. Kasim Hill tore his ACL in last week's loss to UCF which leaves the Terps with backup/backup Max Bortenschlager for this weekend's game at Minnesota. It's also unfortunate that Maryland doesn't have a bye week the remainder of the year and plays the top four teams in the Big Ten: at Ohio State, at Wisconsin, vs. Michigan and vs. Penn State.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

Chicago (Arrieta) +102 at St. Louis (Martinez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Chicago

Here’s the quote from Cubs manager Joe Maddon following Chicago’s blowout win in St Louis last night: “We're definitely arriving at the same mental level we've had the last two seasons. The guys have been there, done that. They know what it's about.” That’s a pretty strong ‘bet-on’ quote for a team priced as underdogs tonight, with a chance to clinch the NL Central title on their biggest rival’s home field with a victory here.

The betting markets are doing what they do – overvaluing the starting pitching matchup at the expense of all other factors. And there’s not much love for Jake Arrieta in the markets right now. Arrieta was sharp in his first start back from a stint on the DL, throwing five innings of one run ball in Milwaukee. Maddon, following that start: “I didn't know what to expect. I thought (Arrieta) was really sharp. I was really surprised at how good he looked.” Chicago’s bullpen behind him is as good as any in baseball, and it’s a fresh pen, working Read more

College Football Gambling: South Alabama fires offensive coordinator

09.26.2017     09:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
South Alabama became the latest team to fire a coordinator as head coach Joey Jones let go OC Bryant Vincent in the wake of last week's 29-23 double OT home loss to Idaho. Offensive line coach Richard Owens, who previously served as UAB's OC, will take over. The Jaguars are currently two touchdown underdogs for Saturday's game at Louisiana Tech.

"Third downs is certainly an area (of concern)," Jones said. "Throwing the ball downfield a little bit more is something we'll do. I think we've gotten into running the ball a little bit more, and I think that's been a good thing. ... But you've got to convert on third down. If not, you're not going to win many ball games.

"You can't change much during the middle of the season, but we'll tweak some things. Nothing that will be different to (outsiders)."

College Football Betting: LSU's inability to block hindering offensive improvement

09.26.2017     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Remember all of the preseason talk about how fast and dynamic LSU's offense was going to be under newly hired offensive coordinator Matt Canada? Yeah, well, four games into the season, the Tigers look awful similar to previous editions where moving the football is a constant chore. And while 6.27 yards per play looks decent on the surface, keep in mind who LSU has played and who they will play moving forward. BYU's defense allowed over 7 yards per play to Wisconsin. Mississippi State's defense, which held LSU to 7 points and 270 total yards, coughed up 7.48 ypp to Georgia. And Syracuse's defense, while improved, took advantage of key offensive injuries to both Middle Tennessee State and Central Michigan. LSU managed to hit on a few big plays against the Orange but struggled for much of the game. The biggest issue for the Tigers is the offensive line. After rushing for over 6 yards per carry, this year's unit is averaging only 4.7 ypc. Read more
