NFL Handicapping: Miami tabs Tannehill starter, bettors show support for Houston

08.21.2012     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Miami Dolphins announced that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be the team's Week 1 starter at Houston. There has been a steady trickle of Texans money over the last few weeks. Even prior to the official announcement, most offshore sportsbooks have moved off of the opening number of -7. Houston is now anywhere from -7.5 (Vegas) to -9 (offshore).

“It was a close competition, but in the end, we feel like this is the best decision for our football team at the present time,” Philbin said. “We like the way he handles himself.

“He’s relatively mature. We like his poise.

“We don’t think it’s too big for him. We think he has a chance to be an accurate passer in this league. He has good mobility, throws the ball on the move. I think he has a chance to be a very good player.”

NFL Preseason ATS Notes: Carolina starters to play first half, Rivera wants better effort

Miami at Carolina -3 O/U 37

Carolina head coach Ron Rivera says Cam Newton and the starters will play the entire first half during tonight's game against Miami. Earlier this week, Rivera also came out and requested a better effort from his players after a poor showing in Week 1's 26-13 loss to Houston.

"I expected some guys to step up and make some plays and some guys didn't," Rivera said. "That is disappointing. When you have an opportunity to play this football game, you have to play it with a sense of urgency and we didn't do that, especially in the second half.

"To me that was very disappointing and I will work to get that corrected because it falls on me. I do not accept that as football and I Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Alert: Miami's Garrard OUT vs. Tampa Bay

UPDATE

Rumor has it Miami Dolphins quarterback David Garrard, had or will have (depending of what report you read), knee surgery and will miss tonight's preseason opener against Tampa Bay. And the reason we said "had" or "will have" is because of this:

Expect to see Matt Moore, Ryan Tannehill and Pat Devlin tonight.

Tampa Bay at Miami -3 O/U 33.5

News and notes on the Miami Dolphins as they kick off the Joe Philbin era tonight at home against Tampa Bay. The quarterback trio of David Garrard, Matt Moore, and Ryan Tannehill looks above average by preseason standards – and the starting job remains undecided.

As far as Philbin's gameplan, he said he's looking for the starters to put together a scoring drive and if that doesn't occur, they may get a second chance. The first-string defense will play 3-4 series.

NFL Gambling News: Miami's Garrard say he expects to be starter

07.30.2012     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good news Dolphins fans, quarterback David Garrard thinks his chances of starting are pretty good. Garrard made the Pro Bowl in 2010 but missed all of last season after having back surgery. Garrard will be competing against Matt Moore and first round draft pick Ryan Tannehill.

"I think my chances are pretty good," he said Friday. "I don't think they would have me here or even say that it was open competition if my chances weren't good. I know I can still play.

"The quarterback position is the one position that you can clearly see most of the time who should be out there. As long as I continue to do my job and do what I can do and play my best, then hopefully that's enough."

Buffalo Bills
Starting point:
Last year, Buffalo went 6-10 SU, 6-9-1 ATS and 11-4-1 to the Over. They had a net of -0.2 yards per play (ypp) and +1 TO margin vs. a tougher than average schedule.  The Bills started 5-2 but were decimated with injuries and closed out the season on a dismal 1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS slide.

2012 Issues: This year, the Bills schedule is significantly easier based on the current 2012 Season O/U Win Total numbers.  Buffalo will go from having a tougher than average schedule to having an easier than average slate; one of the biggest differentials from last year to this year in the entire league.

The Bills have a 12-year playoff drought – their last postseason appearance came back in January, 2000 in the Music City Miracle game at Tennessee. They signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a six year $59 million contract last year, and then proceeded to watch Fitzpatrick lead the NFL with 23 interceptions.  WR Stevie Johnson is their lone proven playmaker, and former #1 pick,  CJ Spiller, has not yet lived up to expectations with only seven TD’s in his first two years in the Read more

NFL Handicapping: Miami's Moore and Long probable; Bowles named interim HC

12.16.2011     06:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Injury update for the Miami Dolphins as they play host to Buffalo Sunday. Quarterback Matt Moore suffered a mild concussion in last week's loss to the Eagles but practiced yesterday and is currently listed as probable. If Moore is unable to go, JP Losman will start. Offensive tackle Jake Long (back) was injured seven plays into last week's game and did not return. In his absence, the Eagles record eight sacks. Long has started 61 straight games and is probable. Article on the change from head coach Tony Sparano to interim head coach Todd Bowles.

“Before today, I haven’t heard him say two words,” Bush said. “Not having coach Sparano around was weird. A lot of guys felt that, because he’s such a good guy, good coach.”

“I want to win these last three games and I want to do it for coach Sparano,” Bush said.

“There are no playoffs to look forward to, but we have three Read more

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 14 AFC Betting News and Notes

Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC News and Notes from Week 14.

San Diego
How does a team that has marched down the field and scored on their opening drive in each of the last seven weeks be sitting in last place at the start of the game? Simple – they don't carry any of that early momentum forward – once the scripted plays run out, so does the offense! And there's a character issue here as well – when their opponent punches, the Chargers don't seem to punch back very well. But San Diego finally punched back here after the Bills cut the lead to six following yet another unforced Philip Rivers error, with a TD drive followed by a pick six to retake control of the game. That's a very positive sign for a team that still believes they can sneak into the playoffs. For as rough as Philip Rivers' season has been, he came into the game leading the NFL in Read more

NFL Betting Preview: Philadelphia Eagles at Miami Dolphins

Philadelphia at Miami -3 O/U 45

Michael Vick returns following a three week absence due to bruised and broken ribs. Or was it a bruised ego? Eagles still have the league’s No. 3 offense at 412 ypg and No. 2 rushing attack averaging 157 ypg and a league best 5.5 ypr thanks to RB LeSean McCoy (1,134 rushing yards). So why just four wins?  Start with a -13 net turnover differential, sub-par defense with inexperienced linebackers, poor special teams and coach killer Vick fumbling eight times with 11 INTs. The return of receiver Jeremy Maclin (hamstring) will also help this week. Miami (4-8) has been on the road to recovery with six straight ATS wins. We know the public hates to bet on bad teams, yet the Dolphins prove bad is good again. Matt Moore has delivered far better than expected with an 8-to-1 TD/INT ratio the past four weeks. But the Dolphins defense has really stepped up allowing 14, 8 and 9 points their last three home games. Philly Read more

Philadelphia at Miami -3 O/U 45.5

Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick is listed a probable for Sunday's game at Miami. Vick had been out for three weeks with broken ribs. The Eagles are also expected to get back Jeremy Maclin, who also missed the past three games. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is questionable with an ankle injury.

Miami has covered six straight games while Philadelphia is in the midst of a 1-4 SU/ATS slide.
