NFL Gambling Preview: Miami Dolphins at Pittsburgh Steelers

Miami at Pittsburgh
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -3.45 O/U 41.5
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 40.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Pittsburgh -4
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Under

Both the Steelers and the Dolphins are fundamentally flawed football teams, yet both remain very ‘live’ in the AFC Playoff picture.  The 6-6 Dolphins are currently tied with Baltimore for the #6 seed in the AFC, while the Steelers rank just one game behind with four left to play.  That being said, neither team can like their chances if they lose this week.  We should expect a maximum intensity playoff-level showdown as a result.

The Steelers chances took a real blow last week with their loss at Baltimore, unable to convert the game tying two point try at the end of regulation.  But that defeat didn’t end their season, not by any stretch of the imagination.  QB Ben Read more

NFL Gambing Preview: Carolina Panthers at Miami Dolphins

Carolina at Miami

CRIS Opener:
Carolina -3.5 O/U 40
CRIS Current: Carolina -4 O/U 41
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Carolina -3
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Carolina

Have to admit that Miami’s home victory over San Diego last Sunday was a bit surprising considering all of its problems. The largest issue for the Dolphins was the depleted offensive line which took a further hit last week when starting center Mike Pouncey (kidney) was unable to play. With 60% of the starting offensive line out, Miami was able to gain 343 total yards including 104 on the ground at 5.5 per carry. They did allow four sacks and their defense was stung for 435 yards by the Chargers. The win places Miami right at the doorstep of the playoffs at 5-5 just behind the current sixth seed New York Jets who have the same 5-5 mark. Carolina meanwhile, has moved into the fifth spot in the NFC following its controversial Monday night Read more

Thursday Night Football Betting Recap: Dolphins win...in overtime...on a safety

The NFL Network spent a lot of their early coverage Thursday night raving about Bengals' quarterback Andy Dalton…and how he had topped 300 passing yards in each of the last three games. They didn’t dwell on the fact that it came against Buffalo in an overtime game, Detroit indoors, and the Jets the week after New York went OT to beat hated New England. Hey…it’s marketing…we’ve got a quarterback to sell!

You knew karma was going to step in to at least make things interesting. Karma hates marketing hype worse than I do. Dalton had the ball stripped for a fumble, and threw three interceptions (one of which was returned for a TD) in his sloppiest game of the year. (I swear to you that I typed all that when I thought it was going to lead into an ugly 20-17 victory!)

And…THEN…knotted at 20-all in overtime…Dalton was sacked in the end zone for a game-ending safety. A GAME ENDING OVERTIME SAFETY!

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: AFC News and Notes from Week 8

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC thoughts and opinions from Week 8.

Cincinnati Bengals
Andy Dalton looked really good last week against the Lions, and he looked every bit as good here on a five TD afternoon. The Jets played their corners in single coverage for most of the game, and Cincinnati’s receivers won the vast majority of those one-on-one battles. Cinci’s offensive line kept Dalton’s uniform clean for extended stretches, giving him time to throw. And Dalton showed great accuracy on his deep balls, something he hasn’t shown very often as a pro. It’s surely worth noting that Dalton only targeted AJ Green on seven of his thirty pass attempts, spreading the ball among his playmakers; something that’s been a problem for him in the past.

The Bengals have the requisite offensive playmakers to make a deep January run. Their defense was stellar; effectively blitzing (and rattling) Geno Smith, creating turnovers, Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots

Miami at New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -7 (+101) O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: New England -6.5 O/U 44.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: New England -7
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Miami

The New England Patriots are a very different team now compared to where they were a month ago.  The biggest difference between the Pats now and when they started the season 4-0 is a barrage of injuries on the defensive side of the football.  After four weeks of play, the Patriots D looked like an elite level unit; ranked among the league leaders in nearly every significant statistical category.  But they’ve been torched by the Jets and Saints for 57 points and more than 750 yards in their last two ballgames.

Perennial pro bowl defensive tackle Vince Wilfork tore his Achilles; out for the year.  His counterpart at defensive tackle, veteran Tommy Kelly hasn’t been able to suit Read more

NFL Handicapping: Baltimore seeks better run game vs. Miami

Baltimore at Miami -3 O/U 43.5

Throughout the week the talk in Baltimore has been trying to rediscover the run game. Running backs Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce were all for it after only 64.0 ypg on the ground through the first four weeks of the season. But like the Steelers and Giants who also rank near the bottom of the league in most rushing statistics, most of the problems stem from poor offensive line play.

"We've got to run the ball better," Rice said. "You saw the difference in the first half with [Buffalo]. They're running the ball for four, five yards at time and putting themselves in manageable third downs, and we're not doing that.

"That's tough on everybody. That's tough on our passing game, on

It was a game deep into the second quarter. Miami was driving with a chance to take the lead just before halftime…knowing they would also get the ball to start the second half. Ryan Tannehill threw a very bad interception. BALLGAME! New Orleans scored a TD for 21-10 at the half…and the Dolphins played the rest of the game like they were afraid Tannehill would screw something else up too (he had already fumbled the ball away earlier in the evening).

It could have been a shootout. Instead, it was just a rout…

New Orleans 38 (-7), Miami 17

Miami: 331 yards, 5.7 per-play, 4 turnovers, 33% third downs

N-Orl : 465 yards, 7.2 per-play, 1 turnover, 46% third downs

Miami at Indianapolis

CRIS Opener:
Indianapolis pk O/U 43
CRIS Current: Indianapolis -2.5 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Indianapolis -2
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: Indianapolis

The Dolphins were able to coast to a 23-10 win last week in Cleveland against the Browns.  However, they failed to overwhelm and were actually outgained by the Brown by 16 yards.  Their rushing attack was a grave concern with just 20 yards on 23 carries. Second year quarterback Ryan Tannehill is yet to prove he can play at a high level in the NFL.  It doesn’t help that he lacks weapons as well, and the tight end injury to Dustin Keller will prove difficult to overcome.  One could argue that free agent addition wide receiver Mike Wallace will be that true difference maker, but I feel strongly he’ll disappoint.  No question, the defense for the Dolphins will carry this team Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: Houston's Keenum and Yates battle for backup QB spot

08.13.2013     05:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Houston -2.5 O/U 40.5

We've spoke multiple times on the Sportsmemo Podcast about finding situations in the NFL Preseason where there is a backup quarterback battle. It looks as if we have one in Houston with Case Keenum and TJ Yates. Starter Matt Schaub missed practice yesterday (death in the family) which gave Keenum and Yates extra reps. The duo both played well in Week 1's win over Minnesota. Yates went 13-of-21 for 151 yards and a touchdown while Keenum finished 13-of-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see both players get plenty of action during Saturday's game against Miami.
