NFL Gambling Preview: Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans

Houston at Tennessee
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Houston -4.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Houston -6.5 O/U 47

Houston is in their single worst spot of the entire season.  The Texans played an OT barnburner in Detroit last week, escaping with a hard fought three point win.  The previous week, the Texans pulled a ‘refuse-to-lose’ at home against the Jags, rallying from two TD’s behind in the fourth quarter for another OT win.  The week before that, the Texans were in a tough, physical game at Chicago in nasty, cold conditions that also was a one score game throughout.  That’s three consecutive ‘max effort’ games in a row.

Up next for Houston?  An AFC showdown at New England on Monday Night Football, with a chance to put themselves firmly in position for homefield edge throughout the playoffs.  In between those previous games and the Monday Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Tennessee Titans fire offensive coordinator, promote QB coach

Houston -5.5 at Tennessee O/U 47

Yesterday the Tennessee Titans fired offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and promoted quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains. Jake Locker didn't expect there to be much change to the offense at this point in the season.

“Maybe some little things will change, probably more little details you might not recognize watching a game. It is hard to completely change if you want to do something in the middle of a season. I think there will be some subtle difference, though,” Locker said.

“We just want to take it one week at a time, and study and prepare as best as we can and try and get as good a grip as we can on what coach Loggains wants to accomplish offensively, and then go out and execute to the best of our ability.”

NFL Handicapping: Ravens lose two defensive starters, bettors flock towards Texans

10.15.2012     01:19 PM     Printer Friendly
Baltimore at Houston -6 O/U 47

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh just announced that linebacker Ray Lewis and cornerback Lardarius Webb will miss the rest of the season due to injury. That leaves an already shaky Ravens defense (26th, 396.7 ypg allowed) without two starters. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (knee) was just upgraded to probable. Houston was bet up from a 4.5-point favorite to -6 and could be headed higher. Line history courtesy of Pinnacle.

Houston -9 at New York Jets O/U 40

Betting market support for the Houston Texans has continued with tonight's Monday Night Football contest now -9/-9.5 across the board. According to Bookmaker, 78% of the side bets they have taken have come on the road favorite.  Houston has covered seven of its last eight road games.

Monday Night Football Betting: Houston laying big chalk at New York

Houston -9 at New York Jets O/U 40

A week removed from getting blitzed by San Francisco, 35-0, the New York Jets attempt to bounce back against the undefeated Houston Texans tonight on Monday Night Football. It is remarkable to see what has taken place in the betting markets with both of these teams. In Week 2, the Jets were +4.5 at Pittsburgh and last week +3.5 vs. San Francisco. Houston meanwhile was -6.5 at Jacksonville back in Week 2. New York head coach Rex Ryan is once again saying all of the right things – everything short of guaranteeing victory. And in practice this week, there was reportedly extra emphasis placed on stopping the run. The Jets are currently tied with New Orleans for the league's worst rush defense (172.8 ypg).

"So we put (the) guys out there," Ryan said, "and just put the ball down and said, 'Let's Read more

NFL Betting News and Notes Week 3

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In this week's article, I examine the group of undefeated and winless teams heading into Week 4.

The 3-0 Club

Houston is the most complete of the remaining undefeated 3-0 squads. Quarterback Matt Schaub went on the road to Denver and outplayed Peyton Manning at his own game as he completed a pair of deep ball touchdown passes in the win. Their running game is strong with the Arian Foster and Ben Tate combo. The defense is good at all levels – DL, LB and in the secondary. J.J. Watt is making a strong case for being the best defensive player in the league. The Texans are simply getting things done on both sides of the football. They are a legitimate 3-0 team and a legitimate Super Bowl contender especially when they play at the level we saw from them on Sunday in Denver.

I do have some questions about the Arizona Cardinals and their 3-0 start but one thing can't be denied – their defense is flying around and making plays all over the field. We saw their ferocious pass rush make life miserable for Philadelphia quarterback Mike Vick. It's a defensive line with tons of playmakers including Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett and Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: NFL Pretenders and Contenders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This week, I focused my attention on the six NFL teams that entered Week 3 with undefeated records. Contenders? Pretenders? Read on to find out my take!

San Francisco - Randy Moss was targeted repeatedly here but he didn't make many plays. And this team is not taking 'big play' shots down the field; nothing but short, high percentage routes against the Vikings Cover-2. Normally, San Fran is consistently in third and short situations thanks to the strength of their running game. And with Alex Smith very capable of making short, accurate throws, they're going to be converting third downs at a high percentage all season long.

But this OL is better run blocking than they are pass blocking – Smith was forced out of the pocket repeatedly today by the Vikings pass rush. And for whatever reason, the Niners came out passing instead of running: nine throws on their first ten plays from scrimmage; finishing the game with nearly a 2:1 pass-to-run ratio. When Smith finally threw deep, trailing by eleven with less than three minutes to play, it was an overthrown interception; his first since last Thanksgiving at Baltimore.

The best defense in Read more

Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Denver pk O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Houston -2 O/U 46
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Houston -1

The exhibition season is officially over for the Texans after playing “warm-up” games against Miami and Jacksonville.  You can only play who’s on your schedule, and the Texans are now 2-0, but the test is much tougher this week against Denver.  The Texans pride themselves on their tremendous condition as a team, and with the Broncos off a Monday night affair, the Mile High conditions should be neutralized.  While holding the Jaguars to a franchise best 117 total yards last week, the Texans will feature a similar game plan in trying to control the clock.  The Texans ran the ball 48 times last week, which included over 43 minutes of possession time.  They are as complete and Read more

NFL Handicapping: Houston Texans want to push pace early

Miami at Houston -12 O/U 42.5

Before Matt Schaub got hurt, the Houston Texans made a habit of getting on the board early. Offensive coordinator Rick Dennison says the team will be looking for more of that this season by going up-tempo early.

"We want to get up and down, get ready to go and really set the tempo of the game," Dennison said. "Early on it's tempo, it's ‘set the pace.'"

NFL Handicapping: Miami tabs Tannehill starter, bettors show support for Houston

08.21.2012     07:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Miami Dolphins announced that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be the team's Week 1 starter at Houston. There has been a steady trickle of Texans money over the last few weeks. Even prior to the official announcement, most offshore sportsbooks have moved off of the opening number of -7. Houston is now anywhere from -7.5 (Vegas) to -9 (offshore).

“It was a close competition, but in the end, we feel like this is the best decision for our football team at the present time,” Philbin said. “We like the way he handles himself.

“He’s relatively mature. We like his poise.

“We don’t think it’s too big for him. We think he has a chance to be an accurate passer in this league. He has good mobility, throws the ball on the move. I think he has a chance to be a very good player.”
