NFL Gambling Update: Houston Texans still talking about playing up-tempo

Houston at Dallas -6 O/U 46.5

Another article on the Houston Texans wanting to pick up the pace offensively. Through four games (2-2 O/U) the Texans are averaging only 61.5 plays per game (26th). As mentioned in a previous blog, it took time for Penn State to play at Bill O’Brien’s prefered tempo.

"We've run a lot of our offense," O'Brien said. "I think what we need to do is definitely run it at a more efficient pace and with more efficient production. Meaning, we've got to get our guys where they're able to just go out there and play. Hopefully, with this game plan, we're able to do that.

"It's always going to be part of something that we

CRIS Current: Dallas -6 O/U 46.5

Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over

The Cowboys physical offensive line is rapidly becoming a significant factor in their games and there’s an opportunity this week for them to again be a force. Even though the Texans possess a nasty defensive front, their strength is bit one sided with their pass rush capabilities exceeding those of their run stopping. Last week’s 4.2 yards per carry allowed to Buffalo was the best performance from Houston’s run defense this season. That is likely to be problematic for them this week when they face the Dallas OL and NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray. The new balance in the Dallas offense created by their rushing attack (165.0 rypg) has propelled them to an average of 30.3 ppg (1 defensive TD not included) and 384.3 typg during their Read more

NFL Betting News: Houston's O'Brien wants offense to pick up pace

Houston -3 at Oakland O/U 39.5

Great article on Houston head coach Bill O'Brien's desire to play at a faster clip. In Week 1, the Texans ran only 56 plays en route to a 17-6 win over Washington. Playing with more tempo won't happen overnight. O'Brien's offense is fairly sophisticated, hence why Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick was tabbed the starting quarterback. Interesting to note that in O'Brien's first season at Penn State, the Nittany Lions went under the total in each their first four games. They then closed the season on a 7-1 run to the OVER.

“We need to have more up-tempo,” head coach O’Brien said on Wednesday. “There’s different definitions of up-tempo. I’m not talking about necessarily going warp speed all the time. I’m just saying, we’ve got to get into a better rhythm and

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Bettors expecting bounceback effort from Houston Texans

08.12.2014     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
First-year head coach Bill O'Brien's debut wasn't pretty as his Houston Texans were shutout, 32-0, at Arizona. The quarterback play in particular was poor with Ryan Fitzpartick throwing two interceptions. O'Brien said that Fitzpatrick will remain the team's starter followed by Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage. Bettors are banking on a better performance in Week 2 with Houston bet up from -2 to -2.5/-3 vs. Atlanta.

''I don't think you can let it play with your confidence at all,'' Fitzpatrick said. ''You've just got to take it for what it was, learn from it and move on. It was the first one, I'm disappointed, but we've already moved on and we're out here at practice trying to get better.''

Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Indianapolis

The wiseguys here in Vegas absolutely despise the Colts; rare vitriol from professional bettors.  Why the abject hatred for Indy?  Simple – Indy’s stats are lousy, just like they were last year; yet the Colts are on a 16-8 ATS run in their last 24 ballgames.  In other words, the sharp $$ has been fading Indy for two years and consistently losing those bets; a mounting source of frustration.

Those same wiseguys have cashed betting against the Colts three times in their last five games; blowout losses against the Rams, Cardinals and Bengals.  And we’re seeing heavy money pour in on Houston, against Indy again this week; giving us a very favorable line to support Read more

NFL Betting News: Houston to start Keenum vs. Indianapolis

10.28.2013     02:19 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Indianapolis -2.5 at Houston O/U 44.5

Looks like Houston's Case Keenum will start Sunday's game against Indianapolis. Keenum finished 15-of-25 for 271 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' Week 7 loss at Kansas City.

"Gary loves him,” a source told CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora last week. “He's extremely cerebral. He doesn't have that big arm but he fits their mold -- he can extend plays and get out of the way. He understands the system. That's going to be a tough environment but he shows a pulse and moves the team some, I bet he sticks with him after the [Week 8] bye.”

NFL Betting News and Notes - Week 7

I decided to switch things up with my weekly NFL News and Notes article this week by focusing on the obscene amount of key injuries. Sunday had to be close to a record number of injuries for one day’s worth of football and many of them are significant so I’m going to mention several of them and the impact they could have…

Chicago Bears
The Bears are dealing with a pair of key injuries suffered last week. Quarterback Jay Cutler went down with a torn groin muscle which will put him out of action for 4-6 weeks and linebacker Lance Briggs will miss approximately the same amount of time with a small fracture in his left shoulder. Most people will automatically look at Cutler’s absence being more significant but the loss of Briggs is undoubtedly an impact injury. Chicago’s defense has been sliced and diced whenever they aren’t forcing turnovers. Teams have been moving the football up and down against the Bears and putting up points with regularity. Briggs was one of the few players that had a positive impact throughout the season. He had eight tackles, one tackle for loss, and two passes defended against Washington Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Houston Texans to start Case Keenum against Kansas City

10.17.2013     01:05 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Houston at Kansas City -6 O/U 39

The Houston Texans won't be starting Matt Schaub (he's hurt) or TJ Yates (Schaub's backup) for Sunday's game at Kansas City. Instead, head coach Gary Kubiak will go with Case Keenum under center. Keenum has yet to take a regular season snap since entering the league in 2012. Interesting that earlier this week, the Chiefs were bet up as high as -7 but have since settled in as 6-point chalk.

“He’s given me confidence through camp,” Kubiak said of Keenum. “He continues to grow. We’re looking for a spark and he deserves an opportunity.”

The Houston Texans Stand Alone

There are no more undefeated ATS teams in the NFL after Week 6 and there is only one team that is still winless – the Houston Texans who were ambushed at home by the St. Louis Rams in a 38-13 loss. The New York Giants, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh all snapped their winless ATS starts but Houston now stands alone as the only team in the league to not cash a ticket for their betting supporters this season. There was reason to be concerned prior to Sunday’s game but now it’s safe to say the Texans are in full on crisis mode. Matt Schaub has lost his confidence and his problems are no longer physical, but mental. He has an awful 8-9 TD-INT ratio and now is prone to making mistakes and bad decisions with the football. The offense has sputtered in the red zone all season long with the Texans converting red zone opportunities into TDs just 47.3% of the time.
The Houston defense hasn’t been as stout as they’ve been in the past yielding 29.5 points per game but they are still ranked 1st in the league in total yards and passing yards allowed which tells you that a lack of ball security has Read more
