NFL Betting Stock Watch: San Diego Chargers offer little value for bettors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell the San Diego Chargers – Well, here we are again at the start of a new NFL season and looking to bet against the Chargers. To say this team has disappointed would be an understatement. The Chargers were talented and poised for a big time, long-term run in the AFC but after nine- and eight-win seasons there remain more questions than answers. Most of these questions linger around head coach Norv Turner and without any changes made in that department we must expect this team to fall short expectations. The talent level now must be called into question – or at least the erosion of talent – as well with general manager AJ Smith. On the field the cupboard is far from empty starting with quarterback Philip Rivers, but 20 interceptions and five lost fumbles are unacceptable for someone with his experience. Two years ago it was their special teams, last year it was the defense, and now we could see the offense could decline. There are questions on the offensive line starting with left tackle and Jared Gaither. The wide receiver position is on hold after saying goodbye to Vincent Jackson and losing Vincent Brown to a broken ankle. The defense will Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Small improvements could make Jacksonville an ATS sleeper

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the Jacksonville Jaguars – It all went wrong for the Jaguars in 2011 stemming from the quarterback position and lame duck head Jack Del Rio. The Jaguars finished the campaign 4-12 which included two wins against Indianapolis and another against Tampa Bay. Injuries hampered the Jaguars as well with 53 starts lost. The obvious key to any kind of turnaround this season starts with quarterback title Blaine Gabbert. It’s important to remember how awful Gabbert was last season. He was Jimmy Claussen bad! That should say it all; however he had a real uphill battle. The lockout sapped valuable reps and experience a young signal caller simply needs to prep for life in the NFL. He was given a poor support system, and lacked offensive weapons as well. Quite honestly, I’m not sure if Gabbert even has what it takes to become a better than average NFL quarterback. However, a modest improvement from Gabbert should equate to better results from the team. By many accounts this is going to be the case. He’ll have a much better support system around him with new head coach Mike Mularkey and company. Gabbert worked extremely hard during the off-season Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers

San Francisco at Green Bay
Erin Rynning’s Recommendation:
See analysis
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT – FOX
CRIS Opener:
Green Bay -6.5 O/U 45
CRIS Current: Green Bay -5 O/U 47
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Green Bay -7

The 49ers were a tremendous story last season as new head coach Jim Harbaugh took them to a 13-3 record and the NFC Championship.  Many experts expect are calling for some sort of regression after the 49ers parlayed an easy schedule and an amazing +28 turnover margin into robust success.  The schedule is tougher this year and given the nature of the NFL, it would be foolish to project anything close to a +28 TO margin again. That being said, I still think this is a good football team but one thing the 49ers need to improve on in order to beat the big boys like Green Bay is red zone offense after ranking 29th in the league last year.

After a 15-1 regular season, the Packers Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Buffalo Bills on the rise defensively

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the Buffalo Bills – After starting 5-2 last season, the Bills’ offense went into remission, the defense couldn’t stop anyone and they limped to a 1-8 finish. It marked the 12th straight time the team failed to earn a postseason berth – the longest current drought in the NFL. The fast start was keyed by the efficient play of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who in those first seven games posted a solid 15/9 TD-to-INT ratio. That rate however nearly flip-flopped (9/14) the final nine games and rumors circulated that Fitzpatrick was playing with cracked ribs.  It wasn’t the only key injury with DT Kyle Williams, arguably the team’s best defensive player, and RB Fred Jackson, who suffered a broken leg, both missing substantial time.

Heading into 2012, I think there is an excellent opportunity for improvement and it starts on the defensive side of the football. Much maligned for his work as a head coach, Dave Wannstedt steps into a more ideal situation as defensive coordinator. The stop unit will lean on a 4-3 format with extra emphasis on the front four.  The group consists of the aforementioned and now Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Chicago Bears have look of an OVER team in 2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While I cashed my first Bears tickets this season with a never-in-doubt winner on the relationship of Brian Urlacher and Jenny McCarthy not making it to the regular season opener, I’ll be looking to cash many more involving this team as the season progresses. Front and center for the Bears this season will be their remodeled offense.  There’s no question that the pairing of Mike Martz and Jay Cutler was a disaster with sacks and turnovers highlighting their brief tenure. Cutler is out of that Brett Favre mold; a talented gun slinger who in the right system could thrive. Favre had Mike Holmgren while in Green Bay and the Bears are hoping first-year offensive coordinator Mike Tice can provide Cutler with a similar path to riches.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Bears were at one point 7-3 last season before Cutler and then running back Matt Forte got hurt. The offense got progressively worse and the Bears missed the postseason at 8-8. During the offseason, coupled with the departure of Martz, the Bears managed to bring in stud wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who used to play with Cutler in Denver. Once a major weakness, the wide receiver position is Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Betting: New England has lucked out on opposing quarterbacks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011-12 NFL regular season was dubbed by many to be the Year of the Quarterback.  With scoring at a feverish peak thanks to the likes of Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and of course Tom Brady filling up the stat sheet every Sunday; it is easy to understand why.  While most are drawn to the incredible numbers Brady produced let’s not forget the other side of the football. Much has been made about the weakness of New England’s schedule and rightfully so.  In fact, on closer examination, since their loss to the New York Giants back in Week 9, you can make a strong argument that the Patriots defense hasn’t faced an above average quarterback.  The list includes; Mark Sanchez, Tyler Palko, Vince Young, Dan Orlovsky, Rex Grossman, Tim Tebow (twice), Matt Moore, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Joe Flacco.  How in the world did the Patriots finish in the bottom five in nearly every defensive category which such a favorable slate of opposing signal callers?  The Patriots defense managed to avoid Year of the Quarterback for much of the season but won’t have that luxury against Eli Manning and his red-hot wide Read more

Gambling on Super Bowl XLVI: Tom Brady vs. New York Giants defense

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

As we approach Super Bowl XLVI, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady against the New York Giants pass rush presents a fascinating matchup.  In the 2008 Super Bowl, the Giants were clearly able to frustrate Brady as New England’s vaunted offense was held to 14 points and under 300 totla yards.  Much has changed over the last four years, but Brady was banged around and lacking confidence once again in their Week 9 loss (24-20) to the Giants.  In fact, while watching that game it was one of the few times I’d witnessed Brady lose some of his composure. For good measure, Brady was sickened with his play in the AFC championship game against the sturdy Baltimore defense.

"As time goes on, I still can’t watch highlights from that game," Brady said this morning in his Read more

NFC Championship Prop Bet: New York WR Mario Manningham Total Receptions

New York Giants at San Francisco -2 O/U 41

New York WR Mario Manningham Total Receptions
Prop Bet Recommendation: Over 3.5 receptions EV (Greek)

The New York Giants understand they’ll need to throw the football and spread the field in order to have success on offense.  With San Francisco’s stout run defense and the Giants’ struggling offensive line, this makes perfect sense.  As a result, we’re looking for the Giants to throw their share of quick hitters, and slants.  This of course will mean more catches for their receivers. Mario Manningham has been banged up for much of the campaign and playing for a contract next season.  In Week 10’s match-up at San Francisco, Manningham hauled in six catches – not including his drop in the end zone.  In addition, he was targeted 10 times by Eli Manning.  With Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz earning the attention of opposing defenses, Manningham Read more
