NFL Gambling Preview: Houston Texans at San Francisco 49ers

Houston at San Francisco
Sunday, 5:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
San Francisco -6.5 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: San Francisco -5.5 O/U 41
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Francisco -6
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Houston

I’m not quite ready to shovel dirt on the Houston Texans yet. The public consensus is fairly negative toward this team after back-to-back losses to Baltimore and Seattle with the latter being particularly tough as the Texans held a 20-3 lead only to lose in overtime on their home field. Houston will be highly motivated and perhaps even desperate to come out with a strong game here against San Francisco on national TV. Matt Schaub is under the gun from Texans fans after his pick six late allowed the Seahawks to force OT before their eventual win but I expect him to play well here and with a chip on his shoulder following that defeat. We can’t lose sight of the fact that Houston had firm control Read more

Seattle at Houston
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -3 (-120) O/U 45
CRIS Current: Seattle -2 O/U 41.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Seattle -2.5
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over

The Houston Texans stock is beginning to slide after three very underwhelming performances to start the season. Current media and fan scrutiny make things sound a bit worse than what they actually are according to this week’s power ratings which show Houston just 1.5 points below their season opening number. The betting public’s expectations haven’t been met by hea coach Gary Kubiak’s team as they’ve gone 0-3 ATS and shredded a lot of tickets. Line movement this week indicates bettors haven’t given up on Houston as they’ve remained a +2/+2.5-point underdog fairly steadily the past three days. It makes sense to believe that at some point the Texans are going to play up to their talent level and Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: Houston to plays starters a half vs. New Orleans

New Orleans at Houston -2.5 O/U 43.5

The Houston Texans announced that they will play their starters the first half of Sunday's game against New Orleans.

“No, he’s going to play," Kubiak said of Schaub's status. "We’ll play our starters a good half of football or a number of snaps, whichever comes first. He’s had an excellent camp and I think he’s benefited from the other two pushing each other and the way they’ve played.”

“Yeah, we need to all pick it up,” Kubiak said of the upcoming game. “We need to play our most snaps this week.”

NFL Preseason Betting: Houston's Keenum and Yates battle for backup QB spot

Miami at Houston -2.5 O/U 40.5

We've spoke multiple times on the Sportsmemo Podcast about finding situations in the NFL Preseason where there is a backup quarterback battle. It looks as if we have one in Houston with Case Keenum and TJ Yates. Starter Matt Schaub missed practice yesterday (death in the family) which gave Keenum and Yates extra reps. The duo both played well in Week 1's win over Minnesota. Yates went 13-of-21 for 151 yards and a touchdown while Keenum finished 13-of-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see both players get plenty of action during Saturday's game against Miami.

NFL Preseason Betting: Minnesota's Frazier focused on evaluating players

Houston at Minnesota -1 O/U 35.5

Sounds like Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier's top priority for tonight's game against Houston is evaluation. In the last two preseason openers under Frazier, the Vikings went 0-2 SU and ATS. They scored a combined nine points in the two games.

"Those preseason games have more importance because you're trying to identify the right 53 (players), so you have to utilize those games correctly," Frazier said. "For us, it's a chance to evaluate our young guys, and then for our veteran guys, just to get them a gauge on where they are at this point in the preseason."

"You can't lose sight of what you want to get done in preseason," he said. "There are some emotions when it comes to being at Mall of America Field opening the preseason, but it can't override

NFL Gambling Trends: Teams that won by 20+ during regular season only 3-7 ATS in playoff rematch

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston at New England -9 O/U 47.5

A quick database search shows that NFL teams that won by 20 points or more during the regular season were 6-4 SU but only 3-7 ATS against those teams in the postseason (dating back to 2003). Note also that of those 10 games, eight went over the total. New England beat Houston 42-14 at 5.5-point home favorites back in Week 15. Ironically, the last instance where this occurred was two years ago when the Patriots beat the Jets 45-3 but lost in the Divisional Round 28-21 at 9.5-point favorites.

NFL Betting Trends: New England Patriots have been money burners in the postseason

Houston at New England -9 O/U 48

If you've been betting on the New England Patriots over the last few regular seasons, you've made a decent chunk of change. But that success hasn't carried over to the postseason. Dating back the 2007-08 campaign, Belichick and Brady are a combined 4-4 SU and a dismal 1-7 ATS.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing the AFC's Final Four

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With three more NFL playoff weekends still ahead of us, there are eight teams still standing; the top quartile of the league. This week, I’m going to write about all eight of those teams; assessing their respective chances for a trip to the Super Bowl. But first, it’s time for a brief history lesson for the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

If you’re looking for active trends for next weekend’s round of the playoffs, you’re not going to find much when it comes to sides. Over the past ten years, the rested team has only gone 17-23 ATS in this round, but we’ve seen some dramatic swings. From 2006-2008, the teams coming off a bye went only 2-10 ATS in this round. In 2009, the teams coming off their bye went 3-1 ATS. In each of the last two years, it’s been a 2-2 ATS split. In other words, there’s not much of a trend.

It’s a similar story with totals. Over the last ten years, there’s no prevailing trend to report, with 21 Unders compared to 19 Overs. But over the last two years, it’s 7-1 to the Over. In the two years before that, it was 6-2 to the Under. In the two years prior to that, Overs and Unders Read more

NFL Handicapping: Cincinnati's defensive turnaround results in 7-1 ATS run

01.04.2013     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati at Houston -4.5 O/U 43.5

It's been an amazing defensive transformation by the Cincinnati Bengals who allowed 34 ppg their first three game of the season and ended up one of the best stop units in the league. Eight games into the season, the Bengals were 3-5 SU, 2-5-1 ATS, and 5-3 O/U. After a dominating 31-13 win in over the Giants in Week 10, the switch was flipped. Cinci closed out the year 7-1 SU, 7-1 ATS and 1-7 O/U. One of the strengths of the defense has been its ability to apply pressure without blitzing.
