NFL Preseason Gambling: Houston's Kubiak says starters will see limited reps

Houston at Carolina -3 O/U 35.5

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak said that his starters will see limited playing time during Saturday’s preseason opener at Carolina. Expect to see quarterbacks John Beck and Case Keenum in the second half.

"We need to see them all play," said Kubiak. "It’s obviously to play our ones for about 12 to 15 plays. Play our twos for a good quarter and a half, maybe a little more; and then player threes, a quarter and a half or maybe just the fourth quarter."

Houston Texans
After nearly a decade of trying to get over the hump, the Texans finally broke through last year, going 10-6, winning the AFC South and even winning a playoff game. All that despite an injury plagued season that saw many of their top players go down for extended stretches.

Houston was a money winner for their supporters, thanks to a 9-5-2 ATS mark.  They outgained their opponents by 0.9 yards per play, tied for second best in the NFL, and finished with a +7 turnover margin.  The Texans were an Under team in 2011, cashing at a 10-6 clip.

But before we get carried away with all of the success, let’s not ignore that the Texans beat up on a very weak slate of opponents.  Houston faced third easiest schedule in the NFL based on my numbers – numbers based on my power rating of their opponents for the week that the game was played.

2012 Issues: Houston has fairly good continuity from last year to this year.  Head coach Gary Kubiak and both coordinators return, most notably defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  Phillips took a defense that had been ranked dead Read more

Houston at Baltimore -7.5 O/U 36.5
Recommendation: Over

Both defenses in this matchup are a good notch or two overrated, giving us a prime opportunity to pounce betting the Ravens-Texans OVER the total on Sunday. When these two teams met during the regular season, the total was sitting at 43.5; more than a full TD higher than it is today. That game flew OVER the total despite the fact that the Ravens repeatedly settled for field goals. Out of eleven Baltimore possessions, the Ravens produced seven scores while punting only twice. That makes the current total look too low for this bettor!

Houston learned their lesson in their late season loss to the Colts, a game where they did not trust rookie QB TJ Yates to throw downfield. Since that defeat, the Texans have come out firing – back-2-back games in the 40’s – taking the reins off Yates while making a finally healthy Andre Johnson a bigger part of the offense.  Baltimore’s defense was strong Read more

Prior to the NFL season I made a bold prediction in the Sportsmemo Blog that the Texans would not only win their division and advance to their first every playoffs, but also make a run to the AFC Championship Game. The possibility is in place, but the situation and odds are clearly against the Texans this week as they play the Baltimore Ravens; the best team in the AFC in my opinion.

Houston (11-6) delivered our 20* NFL Playoff Game of the Year winner last week with a 31-10 win over Cincinnati. That runs our NFL playoff sides record to 6-0 the past three seasons. And while I initially thought the line was too high favoring Baltimore this week, it’s going to take a huge effort and probably some turnovers and/or key special teams’ plays for the Texans to knock off Baltimore (12-4) and even stay within a touchdown. I’ve added the Ravens to my 6-point teaser plays this week.

The Ravens went a perfect 8-0 at home this season at M&T Bank Stadium. One of those wins was a 29-14 victory over the Texans in a game which Baltimore was also off a bye. And while star Read more

Handicapping the NFL Playoffs: Houston Texans primed for postseason

At the start of the NFL season, I made a bold prediction that the Houston Texans would not only make the playoffs for the first time ever, but make a run to the AFC Championship game. I projected they would be one of the most improved defenses in the league, and ended up finishing even stronger than expected with the No. 2 defense in the league (285 ypg allowed).  Despite playing without top defender Mario Williams for extended time, the Texans managed the fourth-best rushing defense and second-rated pass defense. Their 3-4 defense was strong inside, as linebacker Brian Cushing was the team’s MVP, and the off-season acquisition of safety Danieal Manning proved to be very productive. Manning will not only be anchoring the defensive backfield in the playoffs, but he’ll be returning kickoffs again starting Saturday. Manning averaged 27.4 yards per kickoff returns this season, but has not returned kicks since returning from injury in late November. Manning also Read more

Houston at Cincinnati -3 O/U 38.5

The Bengals (7-5) have fallen off the pace in the AFC North but are in a four-way tie for the final wild card spot. Despite a number of key injuries, the Texans (9-3) lead the AFC Sorth and are still in the running for a top-2 seed and first round bye. Houston wins and covers the way we discuss; by controlling the ball, clock and line of scrimmage on both sides. A top-notch ground game runs for 152 ypg to rank third in the NFL and the Texans defense is first in total yards allowed at just 274 ypg. Both the Texans (90 ypg) and Bengals (96 ypg) feature top-6 run defenses, but the Texans continue to win thanks to their strong play along the line of scrimmage and +12 turnover margin. The Bengals are -1 in TOs, but if they can slow the Houston ground game, perhaps they can create a few TOs from third string rookie QB T. J. Yates as he makes his first road start of the season. The absence of WR Andre Johnson could have a Read more

Handicapper Teddy Covers: Week 12 AFC Betting News and Notes

Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC News and Notes from Week 12.

Buffalo
Is it too early to call CJ Spiller a bust? He was an amazing playmaker at Clemson and the No. 9 overall draft choice by the Bills, but he's shown exactly zero playmaking ability at the NFL level. His long carry today, replacing Fred Jackson as the starter? Nine yards. In 25 games over two years with Buffalo (156 rushes and receptions coming following the game), Spiller has found the end zone only twice – less than the number of times that he's fumbled. And his contribution to the return game hasn't done a darn thing. Just their current four game skid, the Bills have collapsed on both sides of the football. This was their best offensive performance in nearly two months, but the secondary got absolutely torched in the second half. Without pro bowl caliber cornerback Terrance McGee (IR) in Read more

NFL Handicapping: Houston Texans down to third-string QB TJ Yates

Atlanta at Houston

Houston's quarterback situation just went from bad to worse after Matt Leinart reportedly broke his collarbone in Sunday's win over Jacksonville. The Texans were forced to go with rookie TJ Yates who performed adequately (80of-15, 70 yards) in relief of Leinart. Yates is likely to be this week's starter though the Texans picked up veteran Kellen Clemens after Schaub went down. Houston (8-3) owns a two-game lead over Tennessee (6-5) in the AFC South. The remaining schedule appears manageable with Atlanta, Carolina and Tennessee at home and road trips to Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

“It’s why we drafted him,” offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said of Yates. “He’s a calm guy, he’s a smart guy and he knows what we do. We’ll see how it goes the next couple days, the next week. If that’s what Read more

Houston Texas' AFC South odds dip following Schaub's injury

11.15.2011     10:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We have yet to know the pointspread impact of Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub's season-ending injury because the team has a bye week. There has however been some movement in terms of the team's adjusted odds to win the AFC South. Prior to Schaub's injury, the Texans were well over a 10-1 favorite to win the division but with Matt Leinart now slated to start, the odds have dipped to -630 (Pinnacle). With a bye week to prepare and a manageable slate the rest of the way league (six remaining opponents are a combined 21-34) the Texans (7-3) are still in a good spot over Tennessee (5-4).

Houston's remaining opponents: at Jacksonville, vs. Atlanta, at Cincinnati, vs. Carolina, at Indianapolis, vs. Tennessee

Buffalo at Dallas -5.5 – This sets up as a high-scoring entertaining game. The underachieving Cowboys (4-4) have posted some impressive offensive numbers as they outgain a tougher schedule 400-335. Rookie running back DeMarco Murray has burst onto the scene and added to the offense’s success. I expect Tony Romo to have a big game even without WR Miles Austin, as the Cowboys speedy receivers and top TE will make plenty of plays against a suspect secondary.  The Bills (5-3) defense allows 381 ypg and 6.0 yards per play including 260 passing ypg and 7.7 yards per pass attempt. The Bills offense has been efficient in the red zone and is more balanced with a top-tier running game and breakout season from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Against a Dallas secondary missing CB Jenkins and top tackler LB Lee hurting and questionable, the Bills offense should also enjoy success Sunday. Bills head coach Chan Gailey returns to Dallas where he coached in the late 90’s, and he’s one of the top offensive Read more
