NFL Gambling Preview: Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks

Denver at Seattle
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -4.5 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Seattle -4.5 O/U 48.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Seattle -6
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Over

We all remember what happened when these two teams met in the Super Bowl; a game that was arguably decided on the very first play from scrimmage – a bad snap safety for the Broncos.  And we all know how strong the Seahawks home field has been in recent years.  Seattle’s 20 point win over Green Bay in their opener was just the tip of the iceberg.   They’ve beaten plenty of other elite teams on this field over the last few years, including wins by 26 and 29 points over San Francisco, by 27 over New Orleans, and by 58 over Arizona as part of their truly impressive 13-4 ATS run in the regular season on this field since the start of the 2012 campaign.

The question here is ‘What’s Read more

NFL Gambling News: Eagles cover vs. Colts cost bettor $100K

09.17.2014     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Our first big football parlay near-miss of the season! A bettor from Delaware spent $5 on a 15-team parlay (against the spread!) and had the Colts over the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Had the Colts covered, he would have taken home $100K. Damn you, Chip Kelly.

"Honestly, we were rooting for the guy, starting with Sunday night's game," Delaware Lottery director Vernon Kirk said. "Our risk manager told us Sunday night that only one person had hit 14 games and needed the Bears and Colts.

"It definitely looked like Delaware had a winner when the Colts were up 14 midway through the third quarter," Kirk added. "Then to have the Eagles rally like that -- and to win in the last three seconds of the game -- it was agonizing to watch when you knew one player was so close to such a big payout."

NFL Gambling: Bettors to upgrade Washington with Cousins under center?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington at Philadelphia -6.5 O/U 50

With Robert Griffin (knee) listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at Philadelphia, the Washington Redskins are expected to start Kirk Cousins. And if you read some of the reports coming out of Washington you get the sense that Griffin's injury may be a positive. Cousins appears to be far more comfortable in head coach Jay Gruden's West Coast offense. Yes, it came against Jacksonville, but in relief duty Cousins completed 22-of-33 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns, and a QBR of 93.7. The last time Griffin had a QBR of better than 93.7 was Week 6 of the 2012 season.

"I feel like we can win any game with Kirk Cousins," Gruden said after Sunday's win over the Jags. "Kirk is a special guy. He started four games last year and didn't have great success, but obviously has a skill

NFL Betting News: New Orleans' defense looks shaky

09.16.2014     08:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two years ago, New Orleans was the only team in the NFL to allow over 400 ypg. Following the hire of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, they went from last to second (301.3 ypg) in 2013. Through two weeks, however, the Saints' stop-unit has look more like the 2012 version with 446.0 ypg allowed and an 0-2 start.

"Every two-minute situation we've had this year, we've blown," Ryan said, pointing to the end of both halves in Week 1 at Atlanta and the final drive in Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns. "We want to be a great defense, and great defenses always finish. And that's something you just have to point the finger at us, and we have to get corrected."

"We've limited our checks, and we still busted some things. So we can't have that. And that's not our style of play," Ryan said. "Right now, we need to develop our style of play and prove who we are. Right now we're not very good.

"We're gonna be great, we're gonna work at it. We've got the players, I know we've got the

NFL Gambling: Buffalo Bills yet to play truly up-tempo

09.16.2014     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of the talk during the preseason centered on how fast the Buffalo Bills wanted to play offensively. Last season, before quarterback EJ Manuel got hurt, the Bills averaged 77 plays per game. Since then, while not slow, they haven’t lived up the the up-tempo "hype." Through their first two games of the regular season, both wins, the Bills have run a total of 116 plays. Some of that number was a result of playing with a big lead in last week's win over the Dolphins. Note than including the preseason, Buffalo has gone under the total in six of seven games. The lone game to go over, in Week 2 of the preseason, cashed by a single point. For Week 3, Buffalo plays host to San Diego. The Bills opened as a pick 'em but have since been bet up to -2.5. The opening total of 44.5 was bet down to 44.

NFL Handicapping: New England's offense limited to small ball

09.16.2014     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite picking up an easy 30-7 road win over the Vikings, concerns remain about New England's offense moving forward. The Patriots rank 30th in the league at 4.3 yards per play and dead last at 5.1 yards per pass. One of the contributing factors appears to be Tom Brady's declining arm strength. As a result, everything thus far has been pretty much dink-and-dunk. Great article from the Boston Globe that expands on some of this ineptitude.

The Patriots basically conceded that they can’t pass the ball down the field, and took the ball out of Brady’s hands on several third-and-long opportunities. On third and 8 in the first quarter, he handed off to Vereen for 7 yards. On second and 18, they ran a draw to Vereen for 7 yards. The next play, on third and 11, Brady threw a bubble screen to Edelman that didn’t gain any yards. On third and 19 from the 21-yard line in the second half, they again ran an inside draw to Vereen.

NFL Handicapping: Kansas City Chiefs suffer from injury regression

09.15.2014     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City at Miami -4 O/U 41.5

A slew of injuries for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into Sunday's game at Miami. Running back Jamaal Charles (ankle) is out and cornerback Eric Berry (ankle) is questionable. Check out the numbers behind those currently sidelined below. Note that the Chiefs were the healthiest team in the league last year based on fewest starts lost to injury.

The loss of Charles and Berry means the hard-luck Chiefs (0-2) are down seven starters to injuries and suspensions. Those seven players have combined to start 355 games, play in 492 games and appear in nine Pro Bowls over 43-plus seasons in the NFL.
