Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's new offensive coordinators Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in my Wiseguy Report, I wrote about a half dozen offensive coordinator changes in the NFL this past offseason.  This week, I’ll finish my analysis of the other half dozen offensive coordinator changes from around the league, with specific focus on how big of a change and how steep of a learning curve these offenses face.  Coordinators are listed in alphabetical order based on their new teams.

Kyle Shanahan, Atlanta Falcons - Shanahan’s dad was certainly a major factor in Kyle’s first few NFL coordinator jobs; none of which have been particularly successful.  Shanahan worked under Mike Shanahan protégé Gary Kubiak as OC in Houston in 2008-2009, and then worked under his dad for four years with the Redskins.  During that span, his team’s reached the playoffs only once – the ill-fated RG3 injury game against Seattle.  Last year’s debacle in Cleveland didn’t exactly bolster his Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're still more than two weeks away from the NFL Preseason with the Hall of Fame game slated for Sunday, August 9. A few sportsbooks have posted a side and total on the game with Pittsburgh and Minnesota currently a pick 'em with a total of 34. Below is a rundown of the last 10 HOF contests (there was no game in 2011). No real trends to speak of with the underdog and favorite covering four times apiece with two pushes. Totals wise, it's split right down the middle at 5-5 O/U.

NFL Handicapping: Preseason Betting Results 2011-14

07.23.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a chart of each NFL team's preseason record since 2011. Bettors are unlikely to find anything worth "betting into" as preseason results year-to-year are quite random due in large part to coaching turnover. There are exceptions to the rule however. The Colts were historically poor performers during the Peyton Manning era going 5-25 SU and 9-20-1 ATS from 2005-11. The Lions were moneymakers under former head coach Jim Schwartz, racking up a five-year mark of 15-5 SU, 14-6 ATS. In terms of current trends, Seattle's Pete Carroll doesn't mess around with a 12-4 SU, 13-3 ATS record the last four seasons.

But the most intriguing preseason handicap is first-year head coaches. Some feel that new coaches will have a desire to play well and get off to a good start. But recent results tell a different story. Teams with a first-year HCs went 7-13 SU, 10-10 ATS in 2012, 16-16 SU, 15-15-2 ATS in 2013, and 12-12 SU/ATS last season. You got a ton of them this year with Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, NY Jets, Oakland, and San Francisco all with first-year head coaches.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's new offensive coordinators

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Much of the offseason media hype comes from the head coaching changes in the NFL, but savvy bettors know that coordinator changes are every bit as important.  In my Wiseguy Report, I’m beginning a multi-week overview of the new coordinators around the league starting on offense, focusing on how the new coordinators experience and philosophies are likely to affect their new team’s level of production.  Next week, I’ll finish off the OC changes and begin examining the defensive coordinator changes.  Coordinators are listed in alphabetical order based on their new teams.

Marc Trestman, Baltimore Ravens - Trestman crashed and burned during his short head coaching tenure with the Chicago Bears, unable to turn Jay Cutler into an elite level quarterback.  But Trestman’s reputation as a creative play caller and top tier quarterback guru hasn’t been affected by his failures in the Windy City.  Each of Baltimore’s last two offensive coordinators was a former head coach who got another head coaching job – Jim Caldwell and Gary Kubiak; something Trestman covets.  And while Chicago didn’t Read more

NFL Handicapping: No word on Brady's suspension; Patriots jump to -3 vs. Steelers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 4th of July holiday weekend came and went and still no word on Tom Brady's suspension. Most suspected the NFL would "dump" it last Friday when no one was looking. Instead, bettors remain left in the dark as to how many games Brady will be suspended. As of now, it's still four games which means he's out for Week 1's Thursday night affair against Pittsburgh. After sitting at -2.5 for a month and a half, the Patriots have seen enough action to push the line to -3 at nearly every offshore and Las Vegas sportsbook.

NFL Gambling: Westgate SuperContest announces changes for 2015

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Westgate SuperBook announced some changes for the upcoming 2015 NFL SuperContest. One of which will be the top 50 entrants taking home cash.

"The SuperContest is more popular than ever and we expect another record turnout," Kornegay said. "It used to be that only those in Vegas and those really connected to the industry here knew about the contest and that you could enter from out of state. The more mainstream media like people on ESPN have talked about it and with more people learning about the contest through social media, that has led to these record fields. ... We don't know how big it can get."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Mini-Camp Betting News

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All 32 NFL teams have concluded their OTA’s (organized team activities) and mini-camps over the past few weeks.  There’s nothing else on the horizon for the NFL before the start of training camps in mid-July.  Therefore, it’s time for bettors and fans alike to fixate on the news trickling out of those mini-camps over the last few weeks.  Here are half a dozen such reports, with teams listed in alphabetical order and information coming from local sources.

Arizona Cardinals - Arizona was an elite team with Carson Palmer behind center last year.  When Palmer got hurt, they were still a pretty good team until Drew Stanton got hurt as well.  Once Arizona was down to a third stringer at quarterback, the back end of the season was ugly as they closed out with a 2-5 stretch, culminating in a blowout to Carolina in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Both Palmer and Stanton fully participated in mini-camp, with Palmer entering the new season as the clear starter, even at 35 years old and coming off his second ACL surgery.  Palmer wowed observers at mini-camp, looking extremely sharp in 11-on-11 Read more

NFL players told not to attend poker tournament

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NFL players can't get away with much these days whether it's defensive holding or coming within spitting distance of a casino. A couple of Miami Dolphins players were told not to attend a non-charity poker event at Seminole Casino because it was considered "promotional."

“The players told me they were advised they couldn’t play,” he told TMZ Sports. “The NFL is just doing this as a precaution. It’s an absolute joke. The NFL is built on gambling. This is the players’ time off, and they hang out with fans at a legal gambling event at a legit casino.”

NFL gets pissy over Fantasy Football convention in Las Vegas

06.10.2015     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It doesn't get anymore NFL than this. A bunch of players were slated to host a Fantasy Sports event at a Las Vegas casino but the league stepped in and kiboshed the whole deal. The reason? Because it was slated to take place at a casino which is a no-no according to the league. The real reason, as pointed out by one of the slated attendees, Tony Romo, was of course money. The NFL makes a shit-ton of cash off of fantasy football but reportedly didn't stand to make a dime, hence the cancellation.

"There's just far too many cases and it does make it sound sometimes that it's an issue about money, which is disappointing because we were just trying to get the fans to hang out with players."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors show early opinions on Jets and 49ers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL futures market is heating up as the calendar turns to June.  Two teams in particular have seen significant action.  Money has poured in against the San Francisco 49ers, the #1 bet against team of the offseason, without a shred of debate.  And money has been flowing in support of the New York Jets. I did debate using the Minnesota Vikings as my top wiseguy bet-on team in early trading, but the markets have moved towards the Jets with a vehemence that Minnesota just can’t match.   In this week's Wiseguy Report, I’ll dive into the 49ers and Jets to see why the sharps have such strong opinions about their upcoming campaigns.

There’s no mystery surrounding all the anti-49ers money that’s been pouring in since the very first win totals were posted at CG Gaming back in February.  The markets hated the loss of hard driving, overachieving head coach Jim Harbaugh and they certainly don’t care for his replacement Jim Tomsula; a largely anonymous Niners assistant with no previous NFL head coaching experience (he did coach the Rhein Fire on NFL Europe for one season back in 2006).
