Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the AFC South

06.20.2016     01:50 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll continue my summer series, breaking down one NFL division each week.  This week, it’s time to take an in-depth look at the four teams from the AFC South, with some very early leans regarding their expected improvement or decline in 2016.  As always, within the division, I’ll list the teams in alphabetical order (NOT in predicted order of finish).

The Houston Texans went 9-7 SU, 9-7 ATS and 9-7 to the Over last year.  They won the AFC South for one reason and one reason only – Andrew Luck got hurt, allowing the Texans to dominate the rest of their division rivals with a 5-1 mark.  They only beat two teams with a winning record – Cinci on a bad Andy Dalton day, and the Jets, when New York was slumping midseason in the midst of a 1-4 stretch.  The Texans defense was clearly their strong point, finishing with the #3 stop unit in the NFL based on mainstream stats.  It is worth noting how healthy that defense was, losing only eleven games from their starters all season!

Houston’s 2016 schedule is a good notch or two tougher than it was last Read more

NFL Handicapping: Steelers and Packers eager for more 2-point attempts

06.16.2016     10:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers said that they were going to be ultra-aggressive with the 2-point conversion. Despite losing Ben Roethlisberger to injury for a handful of games, the Steelers led the league in attempts (11) and conversions (8) during the regular season. On at least one occasion it impacted the pointspread. In Pittsburgh's Wild Card Round game at Cincinnati, it failed on a 2-point attempt and ended up winning 18-16 as -2 favorites. This season, Roethlisberger feels the team should go for two after every touchdown.

Green Bay, though not as gung-ho, says it will go for two more frequently as well. The Packers converted on 4-of-6 attempts during the regular season and 1-for-1 in the playoffs.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the NFC West

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I began my series of NFL Previews by taking an in-depth look at the AFC West.  This week, the focus shifts to the NFC West.  As always, I’ll present the teams in alphabetical order within their division.

The Arizona Cardinals went 13-3 SU, 9-7 ATS and 9-7 to the Over last year.  They finished +9 in turnovers; good for fourth best in the NFL.  Their mainstream stats were outstanding, finishing with the #1 offense and the #5 defense based on yardage figures.  This year, Bruce Arians squad is lined as a 9.5 win team with heavy juice to the Over.  Using the standard formula of 50 cents extra juice equating to a half a win in the marketplace, Arizona is effectively lined as a 10 win team for the upcoming 2016 campaign.

Arizona upgraded their roster in several key areas in the offseason.  Their defensive line should get a major boost with the addition of #1 pick DT Robert Nkemdiche from Ole Miss.  They acquired DE Chandler Jones Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: An early look at the AFC West

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The calendar has turned to June and Vegas is sweltering hot.  That can only mean one thing for NFL bettors – the offseason marketplace starts to heat up with the weather.  The season win total markets and the odds to win each division have seen some movement.  That means it’s time to get to work (if you haven’t done so already) on a thorough offseason analysis of each team.

Over the course of the hot summer months, I’ll be previewing all eight NFL divisions from a win total standpoint, moving from West to East here in my Wiseguy Report.  So without further ado, let’s take a look at the AFC West this week, starting with the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.

The Broncos went 12-4 SU, 8-8 ATS and 10-6 to the Under last year; lined Over/Under 9.5 wins for 2016.  They finished -4 in turnovers for the campaign, leading the league in throwing interceptions.  Bettors seem to be worried about the QB situation, whether it’s Trevor Siemian or Marc Sanchez behind center.  But the Broncos cannot get worse quarterbacking than they had last year, when an ineffective Peyton Manning finished with a Read more

NFL Handicapping: 49ers enter season as one of league's lowest power rated teams

06.06.2016     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a lot easier to get a read on the betting market status of NFL teams these days considering lines for Week 1 have been posted since April and sportsbooks like CG Technology are offering look-ahead lines for every game through Week 16. The San Francisco 49ers were underdogs in all 16 games last season and currently project to be the same (or a pick 'em) in 2016-17. From a raw strength of schedule standpoint, the 49ers have one of the toughest slates in the league. Looks like first-year head coach Chip Kelly has his hands full.

NFL says players can't attend charity event because of casino ties

06.03.2016     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL is at it again. This time it decided that a children's charity bowling event at Las Vegas' Sunset Station Casino was "against policy."

“That’s a great question and we do not have the answer to that. That’s one of the many unknown things about the NFL and the way that they have chosen to enforce certain policies against certain groups. Why they were OK with it is anyone’s guess. There’s no consistency with what the NFL does in regards to these policies,” Pettit said.

“The NFL has a tendency to selectively enforce their own policies when it’s convenient for them or when it makes sense for them.”

NFL Handicapping: Pittsburgh Steelers project to have potent offense

06.01.2016     09:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There's reason to believe the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to put up points in bunches this season. They put up 26.4 ppg in 2015 despite Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell playing only 58 snaps together. From a totals perspective, the Steelers finished 6-10 O/U, including 0-4 without Roethlisberger. Oddsmakers appear well aware of this squad's offensive potential as their Week 1 game at Washington is currently lined 50.5 which is the highest total on the card (Oakland-New Orleans also 50.5). Totals of 50.5 or higher are a dead even 47-47-2 O/U since 2013.

"Obviously, we have playmakers all over the field," Bell said. "We use OTAs as our leverage point. We know where we were last year. We kind of have to pick up where we were last year and get better.

"Teams are going to pick up on things that we do, so we have to continue to detail everything."

NFL Gambling News: To some, staying in Bay Area makes more sense for Oakland Raiders

05.25.2016     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While most of the attention on the Raiders' potential move to Las Vegas is centered around gambling, there are a few folks who are questioning whether or not the location is viable. The Bay Area has nearly 8 million people whereas Las Vegas has less than a million.

"That's why we're doing studies on that now to determine whether it's viable," Davis said. "We're not looking to make this something where the fans fly in on weekends for games. For the first year, it would probably be like that, but we want to have a local fan base. That's important to us."

"If you look at demographics around the league, over the next 10 years, the East Bay/San Francisco/San Jose area will grow more than any other NFL market. I
