NFL Preseason Betting: Houston's Keenum and Yates battle for backup QB spot

08.13.2013     05:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Houston -2.5 O/U 40.5

We've spoke multiple times on the Sportsmemo Podcast about finding situations in the NFL Preseason where there is a backup quarterback battle. It looks as if we have one in Houston with Case Keenum and TJ Yates. Starter Matt Schaub missed practice yesterday (death in the family) which gave Keenum and Yates extra reps. The duo both played well in Week 1's win over Minnesota. Yates went 13-of-21 for 151 yards and a touchdown while Keenum finished 13-of-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see both players get plenty of action during Saturday's game against Miami.

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Betting markets react to OVER the total trend

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
My numbers have the Overs 11-5-1 through the first 17 preseason games (counting Raiders-Cowboys as a push, although you could make the case that was an Over as well).

No 35.5's out there for Week 2 (the prevailing Week 1 number), not a single total at the opener below 38, with 13 of the 16 games totaled at 40 or higher.

And we're already seeing HEAVY early steam on one total: the Bills- Vikings Over, bet up from 40 to 43 this morning; the only line move of any consequence off the CRIS/Jazz/5Dimes openers. Vegas hasn't posted Week 2 preseason numbers...yet.

Went back and looked at NFLX Week 2 last year. 16 games, 12 were totaled at 38 or lower and only two were totaled higher than 40. Overs went 12-3-1 for the week (I graded Detroit-Baltimore as a push).

Clearly, the markets are noticing the trend.

NFL Preseason Betting Recap: Buffalo bullies Indianapolis 44-20

Sometimes brand new head coaches are in over their heads the first time they take the field in NFL Preseason action. Other times, they got all the players buying into a new approach with such enthusiasm that reality doesn’t hit the team until opponents start going all out to hurt them in September.

Sunday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills showed what can happen when a new head coach (Doug Marrone from Syracuse) and a pair of hyper rookies can do against an opponent that’s just kind of going through the motions. That will be most clear to you in the passing line below.

(If you’re new to the site, “Drive Points” are those scored on drives of 60 yards or more. “Stat Score” is an estimate of what the final score should have been based only on rushing and passing yardage. The formula for that is 2 times rushing yardage…plus passing yardage…times 0.67…divided by 15. If you’re a regular, yes…I’m just cutting Read more

Only one NFL game to write up Saturday Night. And…there was really only one good play to talk about! One offensive touchdown in the game…one defensive touchdown…one safety…and a few other cheap points. Hopefully you were doing something more fun than watching this game!

Let’s run the numbers…

NFL Preseason Betting Recap: Friday Night's Results and Stats

Just like last night, let’s crunch some numbers in market rotation order. If you’re new to the site, “Drive Points” are those scored on drives of 60 yards or more. “Stat Score” is an estimate of what the final score should have been based only on rushing and passing yardage. The formula for that is 2 times rushing yardage…plus passing yardage…times 0.67…divided by 15.

Miami 27, Jacksonville 3

Total Yardage: Miami 267, Jacksonville 289

Passing Stats: Miami 15-26-1-161, Jacksonville 23-42-2-163

Turnovers: Miami 1, Jacksonville 4

Drive Points: Miami 7, Jacksonville 3

Stat Score: Miami 17, Jacksonville 19

Very important to pay attention to the numbers here. If you were scoreboard watching all night, you probably assumed Miami was playing much sharper because of their one-week head start. They seemed to be in command the whole way, and won a blowout. But, the offense Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: Minnesota's Frazier focused on evaluating players

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston at Minnesota -1 O/U 35.5

Sounds like Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier's top priority for tonight's game against Houston is evaluation. In the last two preseason openers under Frazier, the Vikings went 0-2 SU and ATS. They scored a combined nine points in the two games.

"Those preseason games have more importance because you're trying to identify the right 53 (players), so you have to utilize those games correctly," Frazier said. "For us, it's a chance to evaluate our young guys, and then for our veteran guys, just to get them a gauge on where they are at this point in the preseason."

"You can't lose sight of what you want to get done in preseason," he said. "There are some emotions when it comes to being at Mall of America Field opening the preseason, but it can't override Read more
