NFL Gambling News: Atlanta forced to adjust offense with White and Jones out

10.17.2013     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay at Atlanta -7 O/U 43

With Roddy White and Julio Jones out due to injuries, the Atlanta Falcons don't expect to utilize as much of their no-huddle offense.

“No-huddle is a big part of our package,” Koetter said. “We are fully committed to it. Obviously, when you take experienced guys out, you can’t ask inexperienced guys to (do it) . . . you can’t do as many things. Roddy, Matt (Ryan) and Julio have been together so long that they can just use hand signals. It builds on its own.”

“Now, you put new guys in there, you have to start with the basics and then build on it,” Koetter said.  “We have a basic package of no-huddle that’s up every week and then we build on it. Against the Jets, we had our three-wide package. Our two-tights package and we had a two-back package. We had the most no-huddle that we’ve had for any game since I’ve been here. We had a lot.

NFL Gambling Alert: Minnesota Vikings plan on starting Josh Freeman

Minnesota at New York Giants -3.5 O/U 46

Well, that was quick. Minnesota has decided that instead of Matt Cassel – who wasn't horrible in two starts – the team will be better serve with newly acquired Josh Freeman under center for Monday night's road tilt against the Giants. Leslie Frazier was originally going to give Freeman more time to adjust but praised his "fluency" of the offense during reps with the scout team.

NFL Betting News and Notes - Week 6

The Houston Texans Stand Alone

There are no more undefeated ATS teams in the NFL after Week 6 and there is only one team that is still winless – the Houston Texans who were ambushed at home by the St. Louis Rams in a 38-13 loss. The New York Giants, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh all snapped their winless ATS starts but Houston now stands alone as the only team in the league to not cash a ticket for their betting supporters this season. There was reason to be concerned prior to Sunday’s game but now it’s safe to say the Texans are in full on crisis mode. Matt Schaub has lost his confidence and his problems are no longer physical, but mental. He has an awful 8-9 TD-INT ratio and now is prone to making mistakes and bad decisions with the football. The offense has sputtered in the red zone all season long with the Texans converting red zone opportunities into TDs just 47.3% of the time.

The Houston defense hasn’t been as stout as they’ve been in the past yielding 29.5 points per game but they are still ranked 1st in the league in total yards and passing yards allowed which tells you that a lack of ball security has Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers

Baltimore at Pittsburgh
Sunday, 1:25 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -2.5 O/U 40.5
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -2.5 O/U 40.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Baltimore -0.5
Marty Otto's Recommendation: Use Baltimore +8.5 at part of a 2-team, 6-point teaser

These AFC North rivals must be disappointed with the way they’ve started their seasons. The Ravens came into 2013 fresh off a Super Bowl victory having signed Joe Flacco to a monster deal while shuffling up plenty of faces both on offense and defense. For the Steelers there was guarded optimism that with a little luck in the health department their 8-8 season from 2012 could be improved upon to get back into the playoffs in 2013. So far it hasn’t all gone to plan for either side.

The Steelers used their bye week to good effect putting together a game plan and executing at a high level. The defense held the Jets to just six points and forced a Read more

NFL Betting News: Carolina's Rivera wants to start taking more chances

10.15.2013     12:06 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Brace yourself, bettors. Carolina's Ron Rivera has all of a sudden taken on the persona of a riverboat gambler. Next thing you know the Panthers are going to find themselves the victors of a game decided by less than a touchdown.

“It’s about trying to make a statement,” Rivera said of his fourth-down risks on Monday. “And it’s probably also honestly one of the things that I’ve learned. Sometimes you play by the book and you miss opportunities. It’s been an enlightening situation for me. One of the things that I want to try to do is to make sure we are in the best position to win. And the other realization is kicking field goals is obviously not good enough.”

Monday Night Football Betting Recap: Chargers win an ugly one over Colts

10.15.2013     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

I first typed that as “Score,” but…

You had a pair of teams who are playing conservatively on offense this season…focusing on high percentage pass plays and runs unless they absolutely have to come out of their shell. San Diego was -8 in turnover differential coming in because Philip Rivers doesn’t come out of his shell well. That led to a grinder game where teams were content to run clock, settle for field goals, then hope the other team tripped while grinding.

Indianapolis lost because they dropped a few passes, and couldn’t convert on third downs…

San Diego 19 (+1), Indianapolis 9

Indianapolis: 267 yards, 5.6 per-play, 1 turnover, 20% third downs

San Diego: 374 yards, 5.2 per-play, 0 turnovers, 50% third downs

The Colts were better per play, but only ran 48 plays…compared to 72 for San Diego.

Rushing Yards: Indianapolis 74, Read more
