NFL Preseason Handicapping: Bettors expecting bounceback effort from Houston Texans

08.12.2014     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
First-year head coach Bill O'Brien's debut wasn't pretty as his Houston Texans were shutout, 32-0, at Arizona. The quarterback play in particular was poor with Ryan Fitzpartick throwing two interceptions. O'Brien said that Fitzpatrick will remain the team's starter followed by Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage. Bettors are banking on a better performance in Week 2 with Houston bet up from -2 to -2.5/-3 vs. Atlanta.

''I don't think you can let it play with your confidence at all,'' Fitzpatrick said. ''You've just got to take it for what it was, learn from it and move on. It was the first one, I'm disappointed, but we've already moved on and we're out here at practice trying to get better.''

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Recapping NFL Preseason Week 1

08.11.2014     12:46 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From 2008 through 2013, Overs ruled the roost when it came to betting preseason football, with more Overs than Unders cashing in every single season.  The average points scored in August NFL games increased every year during that span, from 35.3 points per game in 2008 up to 41.2 points per game last year; a preseason that saw Overs cash at nearly a 60% clip.

An increase of six points per game over a five year span is absolutely going to attract some betting market attention.  The quants who rule the markets aren’t going to let that type of information slip by without a significant reaction!

In particular, the lowest totals have been the best Over bets during this run of relatively high scoring affairs.  Totals of 36.5 or less have been enormous profit makers for Over bettors.  From 2009 through 2013, games totaled at 36.5 or less went Over at a 93-57 (62%) clip.  Games totaled at 37 or higher were essentially split 50-50 between Over cashes and Under cashes – all the profits came from betting lower totals Over.

So what happened in Week 1 this year?  A huge run of Unders!  Including the Hall of Fame Read more

NFL Preseason Gambling: Week 1 produces 76% unders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Quick look back at the barrage of UNDERS from Week 1 of the NFL Preseason. Based on CRIS's closing lines, 13 of 17 games went UNDER the total. OVER bettors who got the opening number would have pushed in two instances. All but one game (Tampa Bay-Jacksonville) closed with a higher total than the opener. Two games (Green Bay-Tennessee and Houston-Arizona) closed the same at the opene -- both games however were initially bet OVER before the late buyback.

Buffalo -1.5 at Carolina O/U 37

Another banged up starting quarterback with Carolina's Cam Newton (ankle) expected to sit vs. Buffalo. The Panthers' backups include Derek Anderson, Matt Blanchard, and Joe Webb.

"Do I want to play? I do," Newton said Thursday. "I think this is an opportunity for me to play. But I'm sticking to the program and what coach is asking me to do and (trainer) Ryan Vermillion is asking me to do."

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees (oblique) is expect to sit tonight's preseason opener at St. Louis. That leaves Luke McCown, Ryan Griffin, and Logan Kilgore. McCown and Griffin are currently neck-and-neck for the honor of being Brees' back-up once the regular season rolls around.

NFL Preseason Betting Results 2010-13

08.07.2014     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a chart of each NFL team's preseason record since 2010. Bettors are unlikely to find anything worth "betting into" as preseason results year-to-year are quite random due in large part to coaching turnover. There are exceptions to the rule however. The Colts were historically poor performers during the Peyton Manning era going 5-25 SU and 9-20-1 ATS from 2005-11. The Lions were moneymakers under former head coach Jim Schwartz, racking up a five-year mark of 15-5 SU, 14-6 ATS. In terms of current trends, Seattle's Pete Carroll doesn't mess around with a perfect 8-0 SU/ATS preseason record the last two seasons.

But the most intriguing preseason handicap is first-year head coaches. Some feel that new coaches will have a desire to play well and get off to a good start. But recent results tell a different story. Teams with a first-year HCs went 7-13 SU, 10-10 ATS in 2012 and last season 16-16 SU, 15-15-2 ATS. You got a ton of them this year with Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, and Washington all with first-year head coaches.
