NFL Gambling Preview: Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Detroit
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Detroit -3 O/U 46
CRIS Current: Detroit -4 O/U 46.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Detroit -1.5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Minnesota

Detroit comes into season with an eight-game regular season losing streak. They were swept by the Vikings last year, losing by seven at home and by ten in Minneapolis as part of a 4-12 season. The Vikings finished with a 10-6 record in 2012 and dropped a first round playoff game to the Packers with Christian Ponder on the sidelines with an injury.

Detroit made some major changes in the offseason to try to find the right personnel to match Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Reggie Bush was brought in to be the new lead running back and there are three new starters on the offensive line. A better running game would certainly help Stafford, who has been asked to do too much with his arm in recent years. The first unit did not Read more

NFL Handicapping: Redskins did their homework on Eagles' up-tempo attack

Philadelphia at Washington -3.5 O/U 51.5

The Washington Redskins talk Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense.

“It makes you kind of second-guess yourself,” said Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who faced Oregon’s offense twice while at Purdue. “That’s what you have to try to fight when you’re playing an offense like this. You’ve got to play fast even though they’re trying to make you guess.”

Explained Kelly, who has said his goal is to run 80 to 100 offensive plays a game: “It’s all about how many plays does your offense run versus how many plays their offense runs. So in most games, our offense is on the field more than our defense is on the field.”

NFL Betting Recap: Manning Up...Broncos Avenge Playoff Loss in 49-27 Win over Ravens

A hard-hitting and exciting first half turned out to be the highlight of the first NFL game of the 2013 season. Denver would take advantage of Baltimore miscues to blow the game open (leading to a huge statistical performance for Peyton Manning). It turned Denver's way with this sequence:

*Baltimore’s Dallas Clark drops a sure TD pass with a few seconds left in the first half. Baltimore has to settle for a field goal and a 17-14 halftime lead.

*Baltimore forces a punt on Denver’s first series of the second half. But, the refs don’t see it that way and give the Broncos a first down on a pass Wes Welker didn’t actually catch before the ball hit the ground. Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn’t challenge in time (Manning got to the line quickly and ran a play). It was going to be Baltimore leading 17-14 with the ball (and it could have been 21-14). Instead, Denver scored a TD three plays later for a 21-17 advantage.

*Baltimore goes 3-and-out Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers

Green Bay at San Francisco
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
San Francisco -5.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: San Francisco -4.5 O/U 48
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Francisco -5.5
Rob Veno's Recommendation: San Francisco

A bit of redemption is at stake here in week one as the Packers look to atone for the 45-31 NFC Divisional Round playoff loss right here eight months ago. In that game the Green Bay defense was shredded for 579 total yards, 323 of which came from the 49ers rushing attack. Certainly Green Bay is healthier this time around and they’ve had the entire off-season to dissect film of that contest which should result in some improvement. Another factor that should help Green Bay even further is the loss of San Francisco’s top wideout Michael Crabtree. Crabtree tore the Pack up in the January playoff rout catching nine passes for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns. While Green Bay may be able to Read more

NFL Betting Consensus: OVER the popular play for tonight's Ravens vs. Broncos matchup

09.05.2013     12:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore at Denver -7 O/U 48

Here are the current consensus numbers for tonight's NFL regular season opener between Baltimore and Denver courtesy of Bookmaker and Sports Options. Note that Bookmaker's percentages are based on the number of bets made not total handle.

Side
Bookmaker: Denver -7 (-120) 51.2%
Sports Options: Denver -7/-7.5 53%

Moneyline
Bookmaker: Baltimore +270 57.7%
Sports Options: Baltimore +270 56%

Total
Bookmaker: OVER 47.5 83.5%
Sports Options: OVER 48//48.5/49 75%

Line History: Back in late May, Bookmaker (CRIS's little brother) opened Denver -8.5 and it was bet up to -9 where it sat for virtually the entire summer. But over the last week or so, money has steadily come in on Baltimore in part because of injuries to Champ Bailey (foot, out) and Von Miller (suspension, out). Currently, most offshore shops are showing Denver -7 with -115/-120 Read more

NFL Handicapping: Cleveland Browns not shy about desire to blitz

09.05.2013     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Cleveland -1 O/U 40.5

So much for keeping the opposition in the dark. Cleveland Browns first-year defensive coordinator Ray Horton continues to tell the entire league that his defense will be blitzing fools this season. Unless of course the greatest trick Horton ever played was convincing the league that blitzing does not exist. Yeah, that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but we can now cross Usual Suspects reference off our blog's bucket list.

“It’s definitely going to be a different look for fans and something the Cleveland community hasn’t seen in a long time,” Jackson said. “What I mean by that is just the pressure. Coach Ray, he’s outspoken about it, he’s going to pressure quarterbacks.”

“It’s been well-documented everywhere he’s been, Read more

NFL Gambling News: Revis gives Buccaneers the scoop on Jets

09.05.2013     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay -3 at New York Jets O/U 39.5

Darrelle Revis obviously knows a thing or two about the New York Jets and he's been busy divulging as much info as he can to Tampa Bay's coaching staff. And on a related note, according to a few reports, Geno Smith came out and said it wasn't necessary to watch film of Revis. The media is making it sound like Smith isn't prepping for his first start which is obviously untrue. That said, why would Smith say something so cavalier knowing that if he stinks up the joint – which is very possible – or Revis picks off a pass he'll spend the next week of his life getting called out my the New York media.

"It's just one of those things, when a player comes from another team, [offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan] is asking a couple of questions about [the Jets'] defense and what Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints

Atlanta at New Orleans
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
New Orleans -3 O/U 53
CRIS Current: New Orleans -3 (-120) O/U 54
Rob Veno's Power Rating: New Orleans -1.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: New Orleans

The Atlanta Falcons had a terrific 13-3 season last year and earned the #1 seed in the NFC but lost in the NFC Championship at home to the San Francisco 49ers. I don’t envision the same amount of success for the Falcons here in 2013. Atlanta had a very weak schedule that was littered with mediocre to bad teams. This year the slate is much tougher and right off the bat they draw a tough matchup against the rejuvenated and motivated New Orleans Saints.

Atlanta’s offensive line still looks weak. They struggled to keep Matt Ryan upright against better pass rushes and also had difficulties running the football at a productive level. They did acquire Stephen Jackson during the offseason but he is Read more

NFL Gambling News: Buffalo's Manuel named Week 1 start vs. New England

09.04.2013     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New England -9.5 at Buffalo O/U 50.5

It turns Buffalo rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is ready to go for Week 1’s game against New England after having minor knee surgery. The Bills planned on starting Jeff Tuel which gave bettors an excuse to bet New England even more. Because of all of the uncertainty the line for this game has obviously bounced around. The Patriots opened -6.5 (CRIS) and were -7 for much of the summer. When Manuel went down and Tuel announced as the tentative starter, New England jumped to as high as -10.5. With Manuel back in the picture, the line was bet back to its current number of -9.5.

"When you play, and if you're going to play, you can't think about any injuries that you have, whether it's something you had a procedure on, or a sprained finger or something like that," he told the team's Read more
