Atlanta Falcons
Since blowing out Tampa Bay on national TV in Week 3, the Atlanta Falcons have looked nothing short of awful.  A team that made it to the NFC Championship Game two years ago is now entrenched in a four game skid; picking up right where they left off last year when they went 4-12 and ranked among the most disappointing teams in football.

All four losses during this SU and ATS skid have come by double digit margins.  The Falcons certainly aren’t going to win many defensive struggles – their stop unit has allowed 24+ six times in seven ballgames this year, a mediocre defense on a good day.  But many pundits thought the Falcons would be good enough to trade points with most of their foes.  That simply hasn’t been the case, in large part, due to cluster injuries on the offensive line, with backup center Peter Konz the latest to go down.

Matt Ryan was sacked five times and hit nine times in Atlanta’s loss to Baltimore on Sunday, while throwing for a season low in yards. "When you go out there and get beat soundly, I think everybody knows we've got to play better across the board. Read more

Positive sign for the Chicago Bears with their offensive line's original starting five expected to play this weekend vs. Miami. The unit hasn't been together since Week 1. The Bears rank 18th in the league in yards per carry (4.2) and 22nd in sacks allowed per game (2.3).

NFL Gambling: Indianapolis Colts dominating time of possession

10.17.2014     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Here's the blueprint for why Indianapolis is 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS this season. Since Andrew Luck took over, the Colts have covered 66% (27-14) of their games.

"We're running a lot of plays on offense," coach Chuck Pagano said. "Consequently we're moving the chains and moving the sticks. The yards are adding up and the points are adding up and all those things. Our defense is chewing ice and sitting on the bench a lot longer, playing a lot less.

"Every time we look up, it's 48 plays, 50 plays, 52 plays on defense, so they're a lot fresher," he added. "When you're fresh, especially in the fourth quarter, it makes all the difference in the world."

Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Indianapolis

The Bengals went into their bye week at 3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS, in large part because their defense dominated all three of those early season contests (wins over the Ravens, Titans and Falcons).  But in two games since their bye week, Marvin Lewis’s defense has been positively torched, allowing 80 points and 936 yards to the Patriots and Panthers.   The season long stats still show the Bengals with a top 10 defense on a yards-per-play basis, allowing 5.3 yards per opposing snap.  But those numbers were elite two weeks ago; not anywhere near elite today.  That being said, Cinci still ranks #2 in the NFL in yards per play differential; in large part due to the big play ability from Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling Part 2

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the NFL’s origins: a league designed by gamblers for gamblers.  Heck, the games are still played at 1 pm on Sundays here in 2014, just as they were 80 years ago, because the old Blue Laws forced horse tracks to close on Sundays and the league’s original owners wanted to offer bettors a place to gamble after church every week.

This week’ I’ll be leaving the early days behind, picking up the story with the infamous 1958 Championship Game between the Colts and Giants – the game that really put the NFL on the map when it comes to national television exposure (and ratings).

The 1958 championship between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants has been called the "Greatest Game in NFL History."  The overtime thriller was nationally televised, and drew enormous ratings with forty million Americans tuning in, spurring the league’s incredible growth over the next decade.
