NFL Preseason Betting: Buffalo's Kolb to start vs. Minnesota

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Buffalo -3.5 O/U 43

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone announced that quarterback Kevin Kolb will start Friday's game against Minnesota.

"Kevin probably would have started the first game if he wasn't injured or hurt, and EJ would have come in and then EJ would have started this game," Marrone said. "But because of injury, obviously EJ started and I'm going to get Kevin his start. You can't call it a competition and then all of the sudden not have the quarterbacks getting those starts."

Detroit at Cleveland pk O/U 41.5

Detroit talks about Thursday's game plan against Cleveland. Note that the two teams meet in Week 6 of the regular season.

“That does come up,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. “There’s things that you sort of feel like you like against a defensive scheme or an offensive scheme that you don’t want to show. But over the course of the season, you’re going to show all those things anyway. The main thing is execution. You want guys communicating well, executing, and you want to see — and I’ve said this a bunch of times in preseason games — you want to see players win not scheme win.”

“I think we’re going to sprinkle some stuff here and there and throughout the preseason,” Bush said. “But obviously, we’re not going to give away Read more

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Bears still adjusting to Trestman

San Diego at Chicago -6 O/U 38

Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears offense continue to adjust on the fly to first-year head coach Marc Trestman.

‘‘We’re just trying to get plays in,’’ Cutler said. ‘‘We’re just trying to rep plays and see what they look like. We’re not really worried about the defense that we’re going against or trying to pair up a certain play with the defense.

‘‘There are some plays that we’re running that normally you wouldn’t want to run against that coverage, or that defense, or that front. There’s ups and downs. Some of the plays look good. Some of the plays not so good. It’s just dealing with those and coming back and bouncing back for the next play.’’

NFL Preseason Gambling: Eagles to play starters first half vs. Panthers

Carolina at Philadelphia -3 O/U 42.5

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said the starters will play the entire first half of Thursday's game against Carolina. Quarterback Nick Foles will start and split time with Michael Vick.

"We'll see how that plays itself out," Kelly said. "Does that mean (the QBs will alternate) by series, or whatever? It depends on how many snaps and how long the series are ... if we get a lot of reps in the first quarter," Kelly might go to subs at some point in the second. 'Some of our 'ones' only played nine or 10 snaps the other night."

Cleveland Browns first-year head coach Rob Chudzinski said his starters will play into the second quarter and possibly the entire first half in Thursday's home tilt against Detroit. Chudzinski also said he's not ready to name the team's starting quarterback as Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell vie for the job.

"I think it's still close," Chudzinski said. "We are finding out every game. These games are important opportunities for guys to show what they can do."

NFL Handicapping: New York Giants look to shake up defense

08.14.2013     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell hopes that "multiple looks" will help solves last year's woes. The G-Men rankeed 31st in yards per game allowed a 383.4.

"We’ll be very multiple. Personnel wise, we have guys that fit a 4-3. We have guys that fit a lot of different defensive combinations and so I’m going to build a defense based on our personnel," defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said Tuesday.

"We’re experimenting. We don’t actually know if we’re as versatile as we can be, so we’ll find out in some of these preseason games, but we’d like to think we’re more versatile."

NFL Gambling News: Eagles struggle with new defensive scheme

08.13.2013     06:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are already some rumblings that Philadelphia's decision to switch to a 3-4 defense isn't going to work. The Eagles allowed 442 total yards in last Friday's 31-22 loss to New England.

“That is a big difference (in schemes),’’ Davis said. “We’re still trying to see who fits where. Again that’s what this is all about, looking at our personnel and trying to make it all fit. Obviously, we want to get our best players on the field.’’

“We have to see where we are, watch this one again and evaluate,’’ Davis said in the locker room, Friday night. “That’s what the preseason is all about, evaluating what you have and trying to get the best out of your players.’’

NFL Preseason Betting: Houston's Keenum and Yates battle for backup QB spot

Miami at Houston -2.5 O/U 40.5

We've spoke multiple times on the Sportsmemo Podcast about finding situations in the NFL Preseason where there is a backup quarterback battle. It looks as if we have one in Houston with Case Keenum and TJ Yates. Starter Matt Schaub missed practice yesterday (death in the family) which gave Keenum and Yates extra reps. The duo both played well in Week 1's win over Minnesota. Yates went 13-of-21 for 151 yards and a touchdown while Keenum finished 13-of-18 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see both players get plenty of action during Saturday's game against Miami.

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Betting markets react to OVER the total trend

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
My numbers have the Overs 11-5-1 through the first 17 preseason games (counting Raiders-Cowboys as a push, although you could make the case that was an Over as well).

No 35.5's out there for Week 2 (the prevailing Week 1 number), not a single total at the opener below 38, with 13 of the 16 games totaled at 40 or higher.

And we're already seeing HEAVY early steam on one total: the Bills- Vikings Over, bet up from 40 to 43 this morning; the only line move of any consequence off the CRIS/Jazz/5Dimes openers. Vegas hasn't posted Week 2 preseason numbers...yet.

Went back and looked at NFLX Week 2 last year. 16 games, 12 were totaled at 38 or lower and only two were totaled higher than 40. Overs went 12-3-1 for the week (I graded Detroit-Baltimore as a push).

Clearly, the markets are noticing the trend.

NFL Preseason Betting Recap: Buffalo bullies Indianapolis 44-20

Sometimes brand new head coaches are in over their heads the first time they take the field in NFL Preseason action. Other times, they got all the players buying into a new approach with such enthusiasm that reality doesn’t hit the team until opponents start going all out to hurt them in September.

Sunday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills showed what can happen when a new head coach (Doug Marrone from Syracuse) and a pair of hyper rookies can do against an opponent that’s just kind of going through the motions. That will be most clear to you in the passing line below.

(If you’re new to the site, “Drive Points” are those scored on drives of 60 yards or more. “Stat Score” is an estimate of what the final score should have been based only on rushing and passing yardage. The formula for that is 2 times rushing yardage…plus passing yardage…times 0.67…divided by 15. If you’re a regular, yes…I’m just cutting Read more
