Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC News and Notes from Week 5

10.07.2013     07:09 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC thoughts and opinions from Week 5.

Chicago Bears - Chicago entered the game with only six sacks on the season, a notable weakness on a defense that's heavily reliant on creating turnovers. They got a little bit of pressure on Drew Brees here, but not enough. The Bears played a lot of Cover-2 today and it gave the Saints fits for a while, forcing Brees into dink-and-dunk’ mode. But Sean Payton made play calling adjustments, and Chicago’s defense didn’t adjust back, leaving Jimmy Graham in store for a huge afternoon.

Marc Trestman was a pointspread monster during his tenure with the Montreal Alouettes in one role in particular: coming off a loss. In his first NFL try in that same role, that success did not translate.

For the second straight week, this rebuilt offensive line got eaten up for extended stretches. Jay Cutler was under constant pressure and Matt Forte had no room to run. Even Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys

Denver at Dallas
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Denver -5.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Denver -7 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Denver -4
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: Over

It’s getting difficult to find the words to describe what Peyton Manning has done in the first four weeks of the NFL season. The numbers certainly say enough as the Broncos have surged to a 4-0 record while averaging almost 45 points per game. Manning is throwing for an insane 9.4 yards per pass attempt with a 16/0 TD/INT ratio. It’s not easy to put up those digits on a video game.  The bad news for the Cowboys is that it will likely continue.  Manning has talked recently how the offense has yet to put together four truly great quarters of football.  Manning’s quick release is important to neutralize a firm Cowboys pass rush.  However, the Dallas secondary will be undermanned when it comes to Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals

New England at Cincinnati
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati pk O/U 45
CRIS Current: Cincinnati pk O/U 45
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -2.5
Marty Otto's Recommendation: Under

The Cincinnati Bengals suffered their second defeat of the season after dropping an absolute dogfight (no pun intended) to the Browns last week. They return home to the friendly confines of Paul Brown Stadium to take on the Patriots, hoping to hand New England its first loss of the year.

Cincinnati was held to just six points last week on the road and they committed two turnovers. Sloppy offense has been a major factor for this team the past two seasons despite a trip to the playoffs. Right now they are averaging a little more than two turnovers per game and seeing Andy Dalton miss what should be easy throws must be frustrating to the Bengals’ coaching staff.

Coming into this contest the boys in Read more

NFL Handicapping: Baltimore seeks better run game vs. Miami

Baltimore at Miami -3 O/U 43.5

Throughout the week the talk in Baltimore has been trying to rediscover the run game. Running backs Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce were all for it after only 64.0 ypg on the ground through the first four weeks of the season. But like the Steelers and Giants who also rank near the bottom of the league in most rushing statistics, most of the problems stem from poor offensive line play.

"We've got to run the ball better," Rice said. "You saw the difference in the first half with [Buffalo]. They're running the ball for four, five yards at time and putting themselves in manageable third downs, and we're not doing that.

"That's tough on everybody. That's tough on our passing game, on Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Houston Texans at San Francisco 49ers

Houston at San Francisco
Sunday, 5:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
San Francisco -6.5 O/U 42.5
CRIS Current: San Francisco -5.5 O/U 41
Rob Veno's Power Rating: San Francisco -6
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Houston

I’m not quite ready to shovel dirt on the Houston Texans yet. The public consensus is fairly negative toward this team after back-to-back losses to Baltimore and Seattle with the latter being particularly tough as the Texans held a 20-3 lead only to lose in overtime on their home field. Houston will be highly motivated and perhaps even desperate to come out with a strong game here against San Francisco on national TV. Matt Schaub is under the gun from Texans fans after his pick six late allowed the Seahawks to force OT before their eventual win but I expect him to play well here and with a chip on his shoulder following that defeat. We can’t lose sight of the fact that Houston had firm control Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants

Philadelphia at New York Giants
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
NY Giants -1 O/U 55
CRIS Current: NY Giants -2 O/U 53
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Philadelphia

The high flying Eagles offense has been shut down in each of the last two weeks.  First Kansas City’s elite stop unit forced six Philly turnovers while holding Chip Kelly’s offense to 16 points.  Then last week, at Denver, the Eagles were forced to settle for crucial early field goals, continuing a trend of red zone failures.  Philly’s trend of ‘lots of yards, not so many points’ continued.

But after facing the Chiefs and Broncos defenses in back-to-back weeks, this is a major step down in class for the Eagles offense against the struggling Giants stop unit.  The Giants yards-per-play numbers aren’t bad, holding foes to 5.3 ypp in contrast to the Eagles 6.0 ypp allowed (only five teams are Read more

NFL Handicapping: First half over/under totals trends

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Three weeks ago this blog was used to discuss the popularity of first half and halftime betting with the focus being placed on individual college team totals results. Here, I’m going to re-visit the first half/halftime theme but this will be an examination NFL team results. With one fourth of the season completed for 30 of the 32 teams, there are three that have been extreme moneymakers in first half over/under wagers posting perfect 4-0 records. While the perfection may not continue for an entire season, these teams may be indicating early on how their results are going to tilt for the majority of this season. Maybe a shift is in the works, but either way, here’s a look at what has occurred and what might be on the horizon.

Chicago Bears – The Bears have rewarded any and everybody who has played them to go over the total in the first half of each of their contests. The perfect 4-0 first half O/U record can be partially attributed to the success of their new offense implemented by first year head coach Mark Trestman. Chicago has scored at least 13 points in three of their first halves and averaged 17.75 per game. That’s a recipe Read more

NFL Gambling Trends: Looking at teams prior to their bye week

10.02.2013     12:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last year we spotted what turned out to be a pretty strong trend in the NFL with teams struggling both SU and ATS prior to their respective bye weeks. The results finished 5-17 SU and 7-15 ATS (8-14 O/U). This year the results are 2-2 SU/ATS with Miami (-3 vs. Baltimore) and Atlanta (-9.5 vs. NY Jets) on a bye next week.
