NFL Preseason Gambling: Tampa Bay starters to see extended time vs. Miami

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Tampa Bay -2.5 O/U 37.5

After a lackluster performance in Week 1, Tampa Bay head coach Lovie Smith says his starters will play into the second quarter during Saturday's game vs. Miami. In Week 1 the Bucs rushed for only 3.3 ypc and allowed three sacks in the 16-10 loss to Jacksonville.

"We realize what's at stake this weekend, and we want to play a lot better," Smith said. "Anytime you get a chance to start off in front of your fans at home is special. The starters will play into the second quarter and will play a lot longer than they did (last week)."

"You want to progress from week to week, but there is a little veil, which every team has to a degree, to give you a little bit of an edge," McCown said. "As far as the complexity of our offense, it is on par with most of the offenses in this league. But we have

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Baltimore starters to play a quarter vs. Dallas

Baltimore at Dallas pk O/U 41.5

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said his starters will play about a quarter during Saturday's preseason tilt at Dallas.

“We’ll have some play counts for a few guys, including [quarterback] Joe [Flacco] and some of the defensive players, but we’ll see how it goes,” Harbaugh said “Basically, [the starters will play] about a quarter.”

"That’s going to be [dictated by] the way the game goes, how many plays we get on offense,” Harbaugh said. “Tyrod needs work—not that Keith doesn’t also, but Tyrod has had lots of practice time here. He hasn’t had as much game time.. Tyrod’s a very good quarterback, but the chance to play it out in games is

NFL Preseason Betting: Hoyer to start MNF, Manziel to follow

Cleveland at Washington -2 O/U 41

It's only going to get worse, bettors. The Hoyer-Manziel saga continues with the Cleveland Browns claiming that a starter will be named prior to the team's Week 3 preseason tilt vs. Pittsburgh. In the meantime, Hoyer is first up for MNF's matchup at Washington. Manziel is also expected to see time with the first team.

“It’s just something right now where we are comfortable with Brian going out there to start the game,” Pettine said Thursday. “I think it’s a little overblown as to who the starter is going to be. The key component, as I’ve stated earlier this week, is that we are going to balance the reps.

“We will play it a little by ear as it goes on, we haven’t truly decided as far as the rotation but the goal is, for when we look at the stat

NFL Preseason Gambling: Pittsburgh starters expected to play a quarter vs. Buffalo

Buffalo at Pittsburgh -2.5 O/U 40

Pittsburgh's starters are expected to play about a quarter for Saturday's game vs. Buffalo. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley mentioned that the practice time against the Bills' 4-3 defense was something the offense needed.

“We for months and months go against our defense, which is a two-gap team, hold-their-space,” Haley continued. “Sometimes when you then see a 4-3 team later in the season it’s a little bit of a shock because you’re not getting a good enough simulated look.

“The biggest thing for us is going against another team,” Haley said. “It’s a different level of competition, and that’s just natural. I

NFL Preseason Betting Consensus: Market and public differ on Jacksonville-Chicago opinion

08.14.2014     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the consensus bets for tonight's NFL Preseason game between the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars according to Bookmaker. What we see is common among single-event games -- the line move differs from the betting public's preference. Chicago opened -4 but have since dropped to as low as -3-105. Meanwhile, over 63% of bets at Bookmaker have been made on the Bears. Essentially what happened is sharp bettors like taking preseason underdogs of +3.5 or more whereas the public sees a home team at -3 and happily fires away. We've seen a similar though not as dramatic move with the total. It opened 41 and was bet up to 42.5 yet 53% of bets have been placed on the under.

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Patriots gear up for Eagles' fast-paced attack

New England at Philadelphia -3 O/U 46.5

New England's Bill Belichick talks about his team's preparation for Philadelphia's up-tempo attack. The two teams will practice against one another prior to Friday's game. Last week's Eagles-Bears total opened 38.5, closed 41.5, and hit 62 points. The Patriots-Eagles total opened 45.5 and is currently as high as 47.

“Certainly we have plenty of [up-tempo teams] on our schedule, it appears anyway,” Belichick said. “This is a good opportunity to work on it. We do it some ourselves, so when we work against ourselves, we see that.”

“They produce more big plays than anybody else, so I think certainly his scheme has something to do with it. But, of course they have great players,” he said. “It was the whole combination of

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Bettors expecting bounceback effort from Houston Texans

08.12.2014     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
First-year head coach Bill O'Brien's debut wasn't pretty as his Houston Texans were shutout, 32-0, at Arizona. The quarterback play in particular was poor with Ryan Fitzpartick throwing two interceptions. O'Brien said that Fitzpatrick will remain the team's starter followed by Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage. Bettors are banking on a better performance in Week 2 with Houston bet up from -2 to -2.5/-3 vs. Atlanta.

''I don't think you can let it play with your confidence at all,'' Fitzpatrick said. ''You've just got to take it for what it was, learn from it and move on. It was the first one, I'm disappointed, but we've already moved on and we're out here at practice trying to get better.''

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Recapping NFL Preseason Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From 2008 through 2013, Overs ruled the roost when it came to betting preseason football, with more Overs than Unders cashing in every single season.  The average points scored in August NFL games increased every year during that span, from 35.3 points per game in 2008 up to 41.2 points per game last year; a preseason that saw Overs cash at nearly a 60% clip.

An increase of six points per game over a five year span is absolutely going to attract some betting market attention.  The quants who rule the markets aren’t going to let that type of information slip by without a significant reaction!

In particular, the lowest totals have been the best Over bets during this run of relatively high scoring affairs.  Totals of 36.5 or less have been enormous profit makers for Over bettors.  From 2009 through 2013, games totaled at 36.5 or less went Over at a 93-57 (62%) clip.  Games totaled at 37 or higher were essentially split 50-50 between Over cashes and Under cashes – all the profits came from betting lower totals Over.

So what happened in Week 1 this year?  A huge run of Unders!  Including the Hall of Fame Read more
