NFL Gambling Notes: Denver plans on using 5-2 front against Tennessee

Denver at Tennessee -7 O/U 42

News and notes on Denver's defensive game plan for stopping Tennessee's run game. Last season, in a 26-20 victory, the Broncos used a 5-2 front for much of the game and held Chris Johnson to 53 yards on 19 carries. They did however give up a 54-yard run to back-up Javon Ringer. Outside of Ringer's run, the Broncos held the Titans to 3.2 yards per carry. Expect a similar focus from the road side this weekend in Nashville.

New York Giants at Philadelphia

Reports out of Philadelphia hint that quarterback Michael Vick will play this weekend against New York. Most sportsbooks have yet to post a line on the game though Lucky's looks to be taking action with the Eagles currently a 6-point favorite.

"That's foolish on our part medically to put time frame out there," Burkholder said Monday. "Everybody wants to know a time frame, everybody wants to know whether Mike's going to play, everybody wants to know whether Mike's going to practice. We're going to go through our protocol and when Mike's ready to practice, I'm going to turn him over to coach and he's going to make Read more

Kansas City at San Diego -14.5 O/U 45

Rumors circulating that the relationship between Kansas City head coach Todd Haley and GM Scott Pioli isn’t very smooth these days. Haley for whatever reason has also taken heat for the amount of ACL injuries the team has suffered. The hot seat is getting warmer but Haley doesn't seemed all too concerned at this point.

“I haven’t heard that. I haven’t read that,” Cassel told WHB radio in Kansas City (via sportsradiointerviews.com). Read more

NFL Handicapping: Arizona Cardinals want to scale back defense

Arizona -3.5 at Seattle O/U 43

After allowing 54 first downs and 932 total yards its first two games, Arizona plans on scaling back its defensive schemes. Defensive coordinator Ray Horton is the third different coach to man the position under fourth-year head coach Ken Whisenhunt. According to reports, miscommunication and blown assignments were plentiful against both Carolina and Washington.

“It’s a tough system to learn,” Rhodes said. “Coming to a new season with it, it’s been a little frustrating. But we’ve got a lot of time to rectify it, though.

“We haven’t watched the film as a group yet,” Rhodes said. “I’ve watched the Read more

NFL Gambling Notes: Bears do everything they can to avoid running the football

Green Bay -3.5 at Chicago O/U 45.5

Yes, they were technically trailing for much of the game but Chicago's reliance on the pass – especially with how bad the offensive line has been – bordered on insanity against the Saints last Sunday. And it wasn't like the Bears were coming from way off the pace. The Saints were up 16-13 until halfway through the third quarter. All told, the Bears called 11 running plays vs. 52 pass plays (we see you Mike Martz!). In the second half, the ratio was even worse at 2-to-29. Of course Jay Cutler was sacked six times. Running back Matt Forte gashed the Saints for a 42-yard run early in the game but carried it just eight more times. It certainly won't help their cause that two offensive line starters may be out for Read more

MNF Pointspread Analysis: Giants bet up to 7-point favorites over Rams

09.19.2011     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
St. Louis at New York Giants -7 O/U 44

The line for tonight's MNF game has climbed throughout the week with New York now settled in as a touchdown favorite both offshore and in Las Vegas. Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay weighed in on situation in Chad Millman's blog earlier today.

Jay Kornegay says: "We opened this game Giants minus-6 and a total of 43.5. The line on this game has been a roller coaster, because of speculation surrounding the status of Steven Jackson and Hakeem Nicks. As news came in that Jackson might play, this line dropped all the way down to Giants minus-4 midweek. As we Read more

Bettors still not shy about playing NFL games over the total

09.19.2011     12:33 PM     Printer Friendly
Of the 13 NFL games currently lined, 10 have seen movement towards the over, two have stayed the same (Pittsburgh-Indianapolis was bet up off the opener but then played back down to its original number) and one (NY Jets-Oakland) was played under according to CRIS's line history. Even after giving oddsmakers a chance to adjust last week, overs continued to cash leaving the league 22-8-1 O/U through two weeks. We haven't seen the 2.5 to 3 point moves like last week but the betting markets still see value in playing these games over the total.

NFL Handicapping: Chicago Bears dealing with offensive line injuries

09.19.2011     12:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Green Bay -3.5 at Chicago O/U 45.5

Chicago's offensive line situation may have just gotten worse with two starters potentially out for Sunday's game against Green Bay. Right tackle Gabe Carimi sprained his knee in the loss to New Orleans and is awaiting an MRI. Guard Lance Louis missed last game and is questionable. In two games, quarterback Jay Cutler has already been sacked 11 times. In two games against the Packers last season, Cutler was sacked nine times.

“We have a few injuries on the offensive line but we’ll just have to plug other guys in and keep that rolling,” Smith said.

“We need to get some other Read more

Article on New York's struggles in short-yardage situations. Running back Brandon Jacobs (6-4, 264 lbs.) failed to touch the ball on two critical short yardage plays in Week 1's loss to Washington.

“If they put eight guys within your tackles and you run straight ahead, what are the odds?” offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said earlier in the day.

“We haven’t been as good in short-yardage as we’d like,” said Gilbride, the Giants’ offensive coordinator since the start of the 2007 season. “It has not been our strength. We’ve run the ball well. On third-and-short or on goal-line runs, we haven’t been. Read more
