NFL Handicapping: New York Giants attempt to fix short yardage woes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis at New York Giants -7 O/U 44

Article on New York's struggles in short-yardage situations. Running back Brandon Jacobs (6-4, 264 lbs.) failed to touch the ball on two critical short yardage plays in Week 1's loss to Washington.

“If they put eight guys within your tackles and you run straight ahead, what are the odds?” offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said earlier in the day.

“We haven’t been as good in short-yardage as we’d like,” said Gilbride, the Giants’ offensive coordinator since the start of the 2007 season. “It has not been our strength. We’ve run the ball well. On third-and-short or on goal-line runs, we haven’t been. Read more

Teddy Covers: Week 2 AFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have. This week: AFC Tidbits from Week 2.

Cincinnati: The offensive play calling was downright stupid. Jay Gruden crashed and burned as an Arena Football coach; I was shocked he got the offensive coordinator job here. Gruden spent the first 40 minutes calling one predictable play after the next – running to the left side and throwing safe five-yard check down passes. Hello, Champ Bailey is hurt and you've got speedy downfield weapons!! The Bengals were completely inept in third-and-short situations – three times in the first half, they had 3rd-and-1 or shorter, three times they failed to convert. Their first and only third down conversion for the entire game came after the two Read more

NFL Handicapping: Over the total trend continues in Week 2

09.19.2011     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
Though not as dramatic as Week 1, the OVER trend continued for the NFL with 10 of Week 2's 15 games cashing tickets. Through 31 games, the league wide mark is currently 22-8-1 O/U. Last week winning teams averaged 29.6 ppg while losing teams averaged 17.4 ppg. Important to note that there were no defensive/special teams' touchdowns but there were 52 turnovers.

NFL Week 2 Gambling Previews by Fairway Jay

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We enter Week 2 off a 3-1 Sunday and look to duplicate or even improve on our results with the experience and stats of Week 1 games to analyze and review. Many bettors and especially the public overreact to Week 1 results with the influence of a good or bad performance from just one week of action impacting their decisions. With so much excitement and anticipation for the season, you’re wise to temper your enthusiasm and understand both the good and bad breaks that can happen in the NFL. After all, we suffered the toughest total loss in Week 1 action when incredibly the 49ers and Seahawks went over the total after two horrible offensive performances. They combined for just 26 points and less than 370 yards through 54 minutes of action before the meltdown.

On to Week 2 and here are some thoughts and analysis, along with ATS situations that may help you to play on, against or perhaps pass on a game based on information you may not have known.

NFL Betting Stock Watch: San Diego Chargers earn buy sign in 2011

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the San Diego Chargers – The Chargers failed to hit their stride last season while dealing with a litany of issues on and off the field. Obviously, the holdouts of key offensive cogs Marcus McNeal and Vincent Jackson served as a team distraction for the duration the season. Injuries were also a key issue, while embattled head coach Norv Turner fielded one of the worst special teams’ squads in recent history. For a very talented franchise to own just one postseason win since 2008 the pressure is on in 2011. However, it’s a team that should come through this season lead by Philip Rivers and an offense loaded with weapons. Tight end Antonio Gates missed the majority of the second half of the season, and of course Jackson was virtually a non-factor. Rivers still put up an MVP-like performance and this year could be even better. Reasonable tweaking should improve their special teams as it can’t get any worse, while just an average unit would have resulted in at least two more wins last season. Read more

NFL Handicapper Free Play: Cleveland Browns at Indianapolis Colts

Cleveland -2 at Indianapolis O/U 39.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

The Colts weren’t going to be a very good team with Peyton Manning on the field in 2011. Without him, my power ratings have Indy ranked among the bottom three teams in the NFL. They absolutely deserve to be home underdogs to Cleveland on Sunday. The Browns – who just lost to Cincinnati at home by a double-digit margin – are the better of these two teams. And when a formerly elite team like Indy falls, it can take quite a while for the betting markets to catch up. Simply put, the Colts are worth fading every week until they cover.

Kerry Collins is a familiar name to bettors – he’s been bouncing around the league since the 90’s, and he had some success in a fill in role in his last stop at Tennessee. As we clearly saw last Read more

NFL Handicapping: Collins gets up to speed, Browns favored on road

09.16.2011     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
Cleveland -2.5 at Indianapolis O/U 40

The Indianapolis Colts feel that this week's practice time will allow quarterback Kerry Collins to get up to speed with the playbook. Another interesting storyline is Cleveland's place in the betting markets. Last week, the Browns were in the rare profile of laying nearly a touchdown at home (lost outright) and are now priced as road chalk – a role they haven't been in since 2007.

"I feel more and more comfortable every day running the offense, making decisions," Collins said Wednesday. "It (more practice) is really going to help me, no question. We just have to keep grinding away and get better than we were last week."

"We'll improve, we have to improve," Read more

NFL Handicapping: Minnesota Vikings focused on vertical passing game

09.15.2011     01:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay at Minnesota -3 O/U 41.5

Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said despite the team's run-first philosophy; they must take more shots down the field. In last week's loss at San Diego, Donovan McNabb failed to top 100 yards passing with a long completion of 12 yards. Last week against Tampa Bay, Detroit's Matthew Stafford completed 14 passes for 10 yards or more and four for 22+.

"It is important," Musgrave said. "That's what we're based on is running the ball, featuring Adrian [Peterson] but at the same time getting our quarterback in a rhythm, both down the field and also possession and control-type passes. That's what we want to be and that's what we will be."
