Detroit -1.5 at Buffalo O/U 39.5

In the fourth and final preseason game of 2011, Detroit Lions starters will play. Jim Schwartz said they won't play much, but they will see the field for a series or two as one final tune-up for the regular season. Both the Bills and the Lions only are expected to play their starters a series or two.

"We'll play them somewhere in that 6- to 10-play range," Gailey said. "You don't want them to go from last Saturday to two weeks plus a day without playing. So you let them play enough Read more

Gambling on fantasy football apparently differs from betting on games

09.01.2011     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
Article about NFL fantasy football becoming more gambling-centric. For some reason it is considered a "game of skill" and thus avoids getting lumped together with actual sports betting – isn't it the complete opposite?

"Everybody wants inside tips, who's hurt and all that," says Steelers linebacker James Farrior. "It's almost like a bookie asking you questions about the game. It's pretty weird, but, hey, it's a big business."

"If someone in our league had significant gambling debts of any kind, we'd be on top of that very quickly," Aiello said. "With that kind of financial problem, (a player) becomes susceptible to being corrupted."

NFL Handicapping: Jets own preseason series vs. Eagles but play on short rest

Philadelphia -3.5 at New York Jets O/U 36

Two things to consider for Thursday's Eagles/Jets matchup: New York played on Monday night, leaving only two days of recovery/practice time – hence why Philly opened as 2-point chalk and was bet up to -3/-3.5. But Andy Reid is notorious for not caring much about this longstanding Week 4 preseason "rivalry" and for good reason. Back in 2001, the Eagles closed the preseason with a 13-12 win over the Jets. In that game, starting center Bubba Miller broke his ankle and never played for the Eagles again. Since then, New York has won nine straight games in this Week 4 series. The Eagles announced that the second-team offense and defense will start Read more

NFL Preseason Betting: Bills will play starters a series or two vs. Lions

Detroit -1.5 at Buffalo O/U 39

The Buffalo Bills finally got on the board with a 35-32 overtime win over Jacksonville last week. Head coach Chan Gailey though is not resting on his laurels and plans to play his starters a series or against Detroit on Thursday.

“They’ll play,” he said. “If you don’t play them a little bit, they kind of lose the feel for the game. And I don’t want them to lose the feel of the game.”

NFL Preseason Betting: Ravens to play offensive starters vs. Falcons

Baltimore at Atlanta -3 O/U 38

Unlike previous seasons, Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said that some of his offensive starters will see time against Atlanta on Thursday including quarterback Joe Falcco. Reports didn't indicate how long they would play but part of the thought process was to get the team's "new look" offensive line more work.

NFL Preseason Line Move Alert: Betting markets key in on NY Jets for MNF

NY Jets -3 vs. NY Giants O/U 36.5

The New York Jets have seen most of the action from the betting markets for tonight's matchup against the Giants. The Jets opened -2.5 but were bet up to -3 after the game was rescheduled because of Hurricane Irene. Most offshore shops are now showing the Jets -3 (-115/-120 juice). Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said his starters will play 30-35 snaps (first half). Jets head coach Rex Ryan said his starters will see action into the second half. Line history from Pinnacle Sports.

NFL Preseason Week 3 Gambling News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
News and notes for this weekend's Week 3 NFL Preseason games.

San Francisco – Head coach Jim Harbaugh is reportedly satisfied with his first string and wants to see whether or not his back-ups can compete against better players. As a result, the 49ers are expected to play second and third string players as early as the third series of the game. Houston opened as a 2-point favorite but has been steamed to as high as -5.

Denver – According to the Denver Post, Denver’s starters will play into the third quarter tonight against Seattle. They are not expected to see any action during Week 4’s game at Arizona. "You always want to get everybody out healthy, you want to get done what you need to get done," cornerback Champ Bailey said. "Any time you Read more

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Steelers plan on testing out no-huddle

Atlanta at Pittsburgh -3 O/U 36

The Pittsburgh Steelers claim they will run some no-huddle offense the final two games of the preseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin added that the starters will play the entire first half against Atlanta on Saturday.

"I love it, and so do the wide receivers," Roethlisberger said. "I like the change of pace. I like the up-tempo, and it's hard for the defense to substitute."

"We want to establish ourselves and what we want to do," Roethlisberger said. "We may go some no-huddle, and if we do that then I would like to execute that well."

NFL Handicapping Preview: 49ers Harbaugh says he will pull starters early

Houston -3 at San Francisco O/U 35.5

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh appears to be taking the unconventional approach to Saturday's game at Houston. Harbaugh said that he will pull his starters earlier than the standard philosophy used by most teams for Week 3 of the preseason. His reasoning is to get a closer look at his reserves.

NFL Preseason Betting Pick: St. Louis Rams at Kansas City Chiefs

St. Louis at Kansas City +1.5 O/U 35
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Chiefs have played poorly in the first two preseason games while scoring just 0 and 13 points in a pair of one-sided losses. However, like the brutal Bengals last night, the Chiefs should bring a much better effort at home against the Rams. St. Louis is 2-0, but head coach Steve Spagnola did not like his teams tackling or run defense last week as they allowed 198 yards rushing and missed too many tackles on cutback plays by the Titans. The Rams generated just 200 yards offense after their opening 83-yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford on the first play from scrimmage.

The Chiefs running game was the best in the NFL last season averaging 164 ypg, and the offensive line seems to be in good shape this season. Despite the release of Pro-Bowl guard Brian Waters, the unit should come together soon and the running game can be top-tier again with the addition of fullback Le’Ron McClain blocking for Jamaal Charles Read more
