NFL Handicapping: Improved running game could make Saints dangerous

08.10.2011     01:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In-depth article courtesy of Pro Football Reference on how the New Orleans Saints improved this offseason. One of the key points was the addition of running backs Mark Ingram and Darren Sproles – a potentially big upgrade over injury prone Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas.  During 2009's Super Bowl run, the Saints averaged 131.6 ypg on the ground but dropped to 94.9 ypg last year. Drew Brees was forced to throw a lot more in 2010 and as a result, he was less effective – by his standards. Worth a read.

NFL Preseason Betting Notes: Miami says it won't prepare for Atlanta

Miami at Atlanta -2.5 O/U 33

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano doesn’t seem all too concerned with his team’s preseason opener at Atlanta on Friday. Sparano said the team will do little to no preparation for the Falcons but rather just continue practicing and getting players up to speed. We would expect the "no preparation for opponent" mantra to be a common theme throughout the league for Week 1 of the preseason.

“We are not going to use this as a game week,” Sparano said. “We really aren’t going to prepare at all for Atlanta, just go down there and kind of decide what we want to run and get a look at some things.

“It is going to be hard to use these early preseason games as anything other than practice opportunities to see Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL win total market got off to a very late start this season, without a single sportsbook around the globe hanging numbers until the last week of July. But since the lockout ended, with the flurry of trades and free agent signings over the past ten days, we’ve seen win totals start to pop up at key sportsbooks both here in Las Vegas and offshore. In Vegas, the MGM Grand, the M Resort (Cantor Gaming) and the Hilton have all posted their season win totals for the 2011 campaign. The early action has been fast and furious!

The NFL win total market is not particularly complex. We don’t see many head fakes, where bettors bet in the wrong direction early, hoping to take advantage of a bad market number down the road once that same number is copied by other books. Rather, the early money tends to be a very good indicator of where the late money is going to come. Barring an injury related disaster, the teams that are taking over money now will continue to take over money into September, and vice versa. These lines Read more

NFLX Handicappaing: Smith says Bears starters will play more

Buffalo at Chicago -3 O/U 34.5

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said the starters may get more snaps than normal during Sunday's preseason home opener against Buffalo. A lot of discussion in the media about Soldier Field's playing surface and the grass not being up to snuff. Some of the players would prefer FieldTurf but management said they will go with grass for the 2011-12 campaign.

“We’ve talked about that. I haven’t come to a conclusion about that, but we have talked about playing them a little bit more,” Smith said after a shortened practice Monday. “And especially after you miss a day like today ... We need to kind of make up for Read more

NFLX Handicapping: Bengals go with Dalton, starters could go longer

Cincinnati at Detroit -4.5 O/U 35

Transcript of Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis' press conference from Tuesday. According to Lewis, rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will start on Friday at Detroit though he expects the remaining three signal callers (Bruce Gradkowski, Jordan Palmer, Dan LeFevour) to see some action. He also hinted that due to time constraints, the starters may play slightly longer than normal in order to better prepare for the regular season.

Can you envision all four quarterbacks playing on Friday?
ML: “There is a chance, yes. My plan right now is to play all four quarterbacks.”

How much longer can you see your first unit guys playing in this first preseason game, in comparison to other years?
ML: “A little bit (longer). It’s going to be important for us to let the guys play a little Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Notes: Garrard unlikely to play, Gabbert slated to start

Jacksonville at New England -3.5 O/U 35

Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio said that quarterback David Garrard will likely not play in the team's preseason opener at New England on Thursday. Rookie Blaine Gabbert will get the start followed by Luke McCown and Todd Bouman.

“I’m just going out there looking to improve,” Gabbert said. “Those reps are going to be extremely valuable on film, after the game, just to kind of see what was going on. It will be the first live game I’ve been in in this league. It will be fun. There will be mistakes made. We just have to learn from those and correct them the next week.”

Del Rio on Tuesday also said running back Maurice Jones-Drew and defensive end Aaron Read more

NFL Preseason Team-by-Team Betting Results 2008-10

08.09.2011     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
Below are the NFL Preseason team-by-team SU and ATS results over the last three years. Coaches can play a key role in how the preseason plays out so some “long term” records will obviously be less meaningful due to head coaching changes. Detroit owns the best three-year record at 10-2 SU and 8-3-1 ATS (tied with Seattle). Indianapolis has been the worst straight up team (2-11) but Kansas City under Todd Haley (last two years) and Herm Edwards combined to cover just one game in its last 12 tries.

NFL Preseason Betting Notes: Tampa Bay wants more plays for starters

08.08.2011     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
Tampa Bay at Kansas City pk O/U 33

We've discovered our first "the starter will play x-amount of plays" declaration. Don't get too excited but Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris said that his starters will see slightly more time that usually prescribed against Kansas City on Friday night.

"You might want to get up to the 20s [in total plays]. Let these guys play a little bit because they missed a little bit of stuff," Raheem said, via JoeBucsFan.com.
