Holiday Bowl Handicap: Washington Huskies vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Holiday Bowl @ San Diego
Washington vs. Nebraska -13.5 O/U 52.5
December 30, 7 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: Nebraska’s blowout win over Washington early in the season had some believing it was going to be a special season in Lincoln. And for the next two weeks it was, until Nebraska laid an egg at home to what ended up being a sub .500 Texas squad. They rallied back some but tough losses to Texas A&M and Oklahoma quelled any big dreams the Cornhuskers may have had. Now, they turn around and get sent to a middle-tier bowl against a team they previously beat on the road by 35 points. The difficult handicap here is even if Nebraska fails to dial it in – which very well could happen – Washington has yet to prove it can hang with an above average foe outside of Seattle. But oddsmakers were already well aware of that angle when they priced Nebraska as nearly a two-touchdown favorite (NU was -3 in the first meeting).

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: North Carolina vs. Tennessee

Music City Bowl
North Carolina -1.5 vs. Tennessee O/U 50
December 30, 3:30 pm PT – ESPN

Overview: It was a season of moral victories for both squads. North Carolina could have mailed it in following all of the preseason drama but held it together for a respectable 7-5 campaign. Tennessee could have done the same but rallied back with four straight victories (all ATS wins) to slip into the postseason. This is one matchup where everything on paper looks pretty even; strength of schedule, power ratings, ACCU-Stats, etc. That means the more motivated club could have the edge needed to bring home a victory. The Tar Heels will have enough pride to show up but Tennessee is playing a virtual home game with plenty of momentum and desire to finish above .500. Ugly stat: The two schools combined for a 1-9 mark against teams with an above .500 record.

Pinstripe Bowl Handicapping Preview: Kansas State vs. Syracuse

Pinstripe Bowl @ Bronx, N.Y.
Kansas State -1 vs. Syracuse O/U 47.5
December 30, 3:30 pm PT – ESPN

Overview: Syracuse’s anemic offense caught up with them late in the season with 13 points combined in two losses to UConn and Boston College. Take away wins over Akron (1-11) and FCS Maine and Colgate and the Orange’s scoring average dips to 15.8 ppg. They should be able to move the ball some against Kansas State but don’t expect Syracuse’s offense to win this game. K-State’s resume isn’t bad with multiple wins over teams comparable to Syracuse. The Wildcats want to run the football and don’t mind being one-dimensional (86 passing yards combined in wins over North Texas and Texas). That however won’t be easy as Syracuse allowed only 1,649 rushing yards on the season. Check out the discrepancy in our ACCU-STATS rush defense numbers below.

Alamo Bowl Betting Preview: Arizona vs. Oklahoma State

Alamo Bowl @ San Antonio
Arizona vs. Oklahoma State -6 O/U 65.5
December 29, 6:15 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: There are teams that struggled down the stretch and then there is Arizona. The Wildcats dropped their last four; two of which by slim margins. You’d have to go all the way back to mid-September (34-27 win over Iowa) to find the last time Arizona came up with a good performance against a decent foe. The Wildcats’ once vaunted defense allowed 233.3 ypg on the ground to their last four opponents. Oklahoma State was easily the nation’s biggest surprise as the betting market projected as few as five wins this season. The Cowboys held an impressive +88.5 ypg advantage in total offense against Big XII foes.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Oklahoma State -4.5) Winning this game is huge for Arizona which closed the season with four consecutive losses and got hammered by Nebraska 33-0 in last year’s Read more

Texas Bowl Handicap: Illinois takes on Baylor

12.09.2010     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_phplHeMof.jpg
Texas Bowl @ Houston
Illinois vs. Baylor -2 O/U 62
December 29, 3 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: Baylor is bowling for the first time since 1994 so it isn’t going to take much for them to get motivated. The Bears may have gotten a little complacent following their late season win over big brother Texas. Following that game, the Bears went on to lose three straight to close out the regular season. The opponents were tough (Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma) but Baylor was non-competitive in all three outings; outscored 150-82. Defense was the major issue as Baylor’s six bowl bound opponents scored 45, 45, 42, 55, 42 and 53. The Bears’ lone win out of the bunch was a 47-42 win at home over mediocre Kansas State. Illinois had a wild season of offensive and defensive ups and downs but they scored with ease against softer defenses. Even with a total above 60, it is hard not to expect a lot of touchdowns in this one. Read more

Betting Preview: Maryland vs. East Carolina - Military Bowl

Military Bowl @ Washington, D.C.
East Carolina vs. Maryland -7.5 O/U 68.5
December 29, 11:30 am PT - ESPN

Overview: Maryland is reportedly discouraged after getting passed over by other ACC teams and shipped to a cold weather bowl.  Basically, the Terps felt they were deserving of a Champs Sports Bowl berth which ended up going to NC State. Finishing 8-4 and playing a C-USA team in late December on the east coast is not exactly a reward. But maybe it was a fitting end to what was somewhat of a fraudulent season. Maryland opponents finished with more rushing and passing yards and if you eliminate games against woeful Morgan State and Wake Forest, the Terps were outgained by over 700 yards against the rest of their opponents. That being said, with East Carolina’s inability to stop anyone, Maryland has a mammoth edge on defense.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Maryland -9.5) Great storylines for each of these Read more

Insight Bowl Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

Insight Bowl @ Tempe, Ariz.
Missouri -1 vs. Iowa O/U 47.5
December 28, 7 pm PT – ESPN

Overview: Missouri’s resume looks pretty good with wins over Illinois, San Diego State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. And the Tigers’ two road losses against Nebraska and Texas Tech are certainly excusable. The defensive numbers are a little skewed due to dominating performances against lesser competition but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say the gap between MU and Iowa’s defense isn’t that much despite their pedigrees. The Hawkeyes lost a lot of close games (four by four points or less) and were undoubtedly unlucky at times but the season-ending loss to Minnesota may have raised some red flags that the team gave up on what was a promising season. Kirk Ferentz is a master motivator but even he has to be bummed about the way things turned out. At least the Hawkeyes drew an upper-tier opponent which should grab their Read more

Handicapping the Champs Sports Bowl: NC State vs. West Virginia

12.08.2010     09:59 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_phpooDXPe.jpg
Champs Sports Bowl @ Orlando, Fla.
NC State vs. West Virginia -3 O/U 48.5
December 28, 3:30 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: The fact that West Virginia finished second in the country in scoring defense (12.8 ppg) and didn’t win the Big East is as confusing as it is unacceptable. The Mountaineers played well down the stretch but there are still reasons to question this team’s overall worth. You hate to punish a team for playing in a weak conference but as mentioned, there was no reason why WVU shouldn’t have walked away with the league crown. NC State spent much of the season putting up big offensive numbers. Their body of work is solid but the one issue in this matchup is that while WVU is capable of making key defensive stops, NC State has struggled to get its defense off the field. It should help however that the Wolfpack have a solid rush defense (113 ypg) which could make the Mountaineers easier to defend.

Independence Bowl Betting Preview: Georgia Tech vs. Air Force

12.08.2010     09:27 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_phpyvOMyj.jpg
Independence Bowl @ Shreveport, La.
Georgia Tech vs. Air Force -3 O/U 56
December 27, 2 pm PT – ESPN2

Overview: When facing above average offenses, Georgia Tech had major issues keeping opponents out of the end zone. And to make matters worse, the offense sputtered down the stretch (21.6 ppg last five). Simply put, the Yellow Jackets were down this season hence just one win (North Carolina) over a team currently above .500. Air Force was once again fairly formulaic; beat teams it was supposed to beat while falling short when asked to step up in class. Considering the familiarity on offense between both teams, this matchup is all about motivation.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Air Force -0.5) Battle of the option offenses. Over 80 percent of both teams’ offensive plays were of the run variety this season. There is a slight chance Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt could play in this game Read more

Little Caesars Bowl Preview: Florida International vs. Toledo

 copy_php0GpOHG.jpg
Little Caesars Bowl @ Detroit
Florida International vs. Toledo -2 O/U 56
December 26, 5:30 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: Unlike most Sun Belt teams, Florida International used the non-conference portion of its schedule as a springboard towards conference play. The Panthers were competitive in losses to Rutgers, Texas A&M and Maryland before running out of steam in a blowout loss to Pittsburgh. They rolled through the conference slate before dropping their season finale to Middle Tennessee. A win would have given the Panthers the outright Sun Belt crown. It is the first-ever postseason appearance for FIU. Toledo finished 7-1 in MAC play; a huge jump after last season’s 3-5 mark. Keep note than the Rockets were a dismal 5-for-13 on field goal attempts this season.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Ratings: Toledo -1) – FIU head coach Mario Cristobal deserves national attention for the job he and his Panthers have Read more
