NCAAF Betting Notes: Nebraska readies for fast paced offense

08.01.2011     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Talk of Nebraska going up-tempo this season with Tim Beck now serving as offensive coordinator. Beck was Kansas' passing game coordinator in 2007 when the Jayhawks averaged 42.8 ppg and 75.9 offensive plays per game. Last season, Nebraska averaged 65.4 plays per game.

“You want to snap the ball before the defense is ready," Crick said. "It’s not trying to cheat or anything. You’re trying to wear down the defense. Those out-of-shape guys up front and whoever else is not used to that tempo, it’s going to hurt them. It definitely hurt us at times last year.

"The play’s dead, and you’re right back up to the line," he said. "Taylor Martinez is looking at coach and getting the play in. It’s great. I’m excited for them. I know those guys love it because they want to go fast.”

NCAAF Betting Notes: Purdue may utilize quarterback tandem

07.29.2011     12:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Decimated by injuries last season, Purdue’s passing game suffered a massive decline in production as the Boilermakers ranked 112th in passing yards per game. This season, everyone is reportedly healthy and head coach Danny Hope hinted that he may use a two-quarterback system with Rob Henry and Robert Marve. Henry was effective with his feet and led the team in rushing (547 yards) while Marve performed admirably prior to a torn ACL (67.7% completions). Purdue has an opportunity to start the season strong with games against MTSU, Rice, SE Missouri, a bye week, and then Notre Dame and Minnesota at home.

"We have a plan to utilize the two-quarterback system," Hope said. "That won't be the bread and butter of our offense, but it's an opportunity to get two of our top players on the field."

"A lot is going to depend Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Nebraska pleased with quarterback Martinez

07.22.2011     07:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck is raving about quarterback Taylor Martinez's offseason improvement. Martinez looked historical during NU's soft first half of 2010 but injuries and immaturity held back his progress and the team faltered down the stretch losing three of its last four. Beck is expected to install a more up-tempo offense predicated on running the football (of course) and quicker throws. Of note: Kicker Alex Henry who hit 18-of-19 FGs including a 53-yarder and averaged 43.2 yards per punt graduated as did Adi Kenalic who was third nationally in touchbacks (39).

"The defense was good enough the last three years to win the Big 12 championship," Beck said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to answer the bell enough offensively."

"He's [Martinez] done all the things I've asked of him," Beck said to more than 200 fans at the fundraiser. "He's got to be a leader on the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Northwestern offense looks good but defense main concern

07.21.2011     11:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expectations are high for the Northwestern offense this season with nine starters back including quarterback Dan Persa. The strength of the unit expects to be the offensive line which returns four starters (137 career starts). Persa missed the last three games of 2010 with an Achilles' tendon injury. Much has been made of the Wildcats' 7-3 record with Persa under center and 0-3 mark without. Note though that in those three games without him, Northwestern still managed to put up 27, 23 and 38 points respectively. The problem for the Cats – Persa or no Persa – was the defense as the unit took a massive step back. In 2009, they allowed a respectable 24.9 ppg and 354.1 ypg in Big Ten play. Last year, those numbers skyrocketed to 33.8 ppg and 436.6 ypg. Texas Tech, Wisconsin and Illinois combined to score 163 points against the Cats the final three games of the season. The preseason talk may be the offense and Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: Projected letdown for Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa Hawkeyes
2010: 8-5 SU/6-6-1 ATS
Returning Starters: 5 off/4 def

Much was expected from the Hawkeyes last season and in the early going they didn’t disappoint wins in five of their first six games (4-2 ATS). They then caught Wisconsin at home in what appeared to be a fabulous situation after the Badgers defeated Ohio State the prior week. But Iowa ended up losing a 31-30 heartbreaker with the Badgers pulling off a punt fake for the game winning touchdown.  It was a devastating loss and one that the Hawkeyes never fully recovered from.

As a whole, there were a lot of positive attributes with 2010's group that will be tough to duplicate this season. They were +13 in turnover margin; an advantage that tends not to carry over year-to-year (for example: In 2004 Iowa was +13 and in 2005 -1). They also must replace quarterback Ricky Stanzi, the 27 touchdowns he accounted for and more importantly his poise and leadership.  This year’s projected starter James Read more

NCAAF Betting Breakdown: Low expectations provide value for Minnesota

Minnesota Golden Gophers
2010: 3-9 SU/6-6 ATS
Returning Starters: 6 off/8 def

Following a three-win campaign and the firing of Tim Brewster, Minnesota is not expected to do much of anything under first-year head coach Jerry Kill. The Golden Gophers were underdogs in all eight Big Ten games last year – four of which +21 or more. The offense was mediocre and the defense couldn't stop anyone. There were however some positives, most notably outright wins over Iowa and Illinois to close out the year. Those wins obviously mean little to this year’s edition but it shows that Brewster was able to assemble halfway decent talent – a lot of which returns. The other thing to consider is despite being one of the worst BCS Conference schools in the country, Minnesota managed a 6-6 ATS record and more importantly 5-3 ATS in league play. And the beauty is those prices (+14.5, +21, +24, +25, etc.) are going to be the same if not more this year which puts Minnesota in the category of being a Read more

NCAAF Betting Tips: Purdue shows ATS promise heading into 2011

Purdue Boilermakers
2010: 4-8 SU/5-7 ATS
Returning Starters: 7 off/9 def

I'll call for Purdue to be an "earner" this season. The Boilermakers were 4-8 against the spread last year with a slew of critical injuries to their skill position players. The personnel losses forced them to develop quarterback Rob Henry whose running ability and leadership were surprising and welcomed. With Robert Marve expected to return to full strength, it gives the Boilers a solid tandem. Purdue also welcomes back starting running back Ralph Bolden (ACL) who will operate behind a veteran offensive line (four returnees, 79 combined starts). With the blueprints for a sound running game in place, the play action pass should now become a legitimate weapon. Wide receivers Justin Siller and OJ Ross (each hurt for portions of '10) give Purdue possession and downfield threats respectively with excellent run-after-the-catch ability. Add in returning junior speedster Antavian Edison and this offense has the potential to Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Wilson's arrival boosts Wisconsin's odds

06.27.2011     01:25 PM     Printer Friendly
Former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson announced today that he will be taking his act to Wisconsin. Wilson obviously hasn't been named the team's starter yet but should have no trouble beating out Jon Budmayr for the starting gig. As a result of Wilson's arrival, oddsmakers have adjusted their odds on who will win the Leaders Division as well as the Big Ten Championship. The Badgers were originally the second choice behind Penn State to win the Leaders but have since taken over the top betting spot at +125. Wisconsin was +650 to win the Big Ten Championship but has since catapulted to +175, right behind Legends favorite Nebraska (+150).

Interesting to note that out of the Leaders Division contenders, Illinois (+800) has far and away the easiest schedule. Unlike Penn State, Ohio State and Wisconsin, the Illini avoid Nebraska. Ron Zook's crew also has an extremely favorable road slate with Purdue, Indiana, Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Purdue set to rebound after injury-plagued 2010

06.23.2011     05:40 AM     Printer Friendly
Update on the Purdue Boilermakers who look to rebound after a slew of key injuries last season. With running back Ralph Bolden, wide receiver Keith Smith and quarterback Roberty Marve out, the Boilermakers were left with what head coach Danny Hope called, "no skill". This year's edition returns 18 starters and expects to improve on both sides of the football. During Wednesday's College Football roundtable discussion in the Sportsmemo Posting Forum, handicapper Rob Veno listed Purdue as a potential "earner" if they can remain healthy. The Boilers could get out to a strong start with four home games and a bye week the first six weeks of the season.

NCAA Football Betting Notes: A look at the new Big Ten

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some news and notes regarding the Big Ten and its scheduling quirks.

All 12 Big Ten schools have one conference opponent they won't play until 2015 unless they meet in the Big Ten championship game.

For the next four years, these teams won’t play during the regular season:
Iowa – Illinois
Michigan – Wisconsin
Michigan State – Penn State
Minnesota – Ohio State
Nebraska – Indiana
Northwestern - Purdue

The division winners play in the Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.  Every team will play an eight-game conference schedule, with six of the opponents already accounted for every year – the five teams in your division and your "rival" from the other division.

Legends - Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern
Leaders - Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin

Along with the division changes and the addition of Nebraska, there are Read more
