College Football Betting: UAB Blazers return after two years without a team

07.31.2017     12:47 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Look who's back! After a two-year hideous, UAB has returned. The University axed the program after the 2014 season; a year in which first-year head coach Bill Clark led the squad to a respectable 6-6 record. Clark remains though there’s a ton of things to fix. Here's a good article that essentially breaks down the timeline of events. To no surprise, Clark has spent much of his time trying to find bodies to fill out the roster. The Blazers are still a part of C-USA and open the season vs. FCS Alabama A&M. They also play host to FBS newbie Coastal Carolina.

College Football Gambling: Southern Miss hasnt covered a pointspread since September

11.15.2016     11:20 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
One of the biggest disappointments this college football season has been the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. After opening the campaign with a 44-35 road win at Kentucky, USM finds itself 5-5 and hasn't covered a pointspread since late September. Starting quarterback Nick Mullens missed last week with a concussion as the Golden Eagles were torched by Old Dominion 51-35. He's currently questionable for Saturday's game at North Texas. But the main problem for USM has been defensively. Check out the number of "big" plays this unit has surrendered this season:

40+ yards: 18 (119th nationally)
50+ yards: 13 (125th nationally)
60+ yards: 11 (126th nationally)
70+ yards: 7 (127th nationally)
80+ yards: 3 (122nd nationally)

Perhaps this weekend will serve as an opportunity to shore things up. North Texas is currently the only team in C-USA averaging less than 5 yards per play.

“We gave up touchdowns where if you at least hold to field goals in those

College Football Betting Preview: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at Missouri Tigers

Middle Tennessee State at Missouri
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC
CRIS Opener:
Missouri -6.5 O/U 69.5
CRIS Current: Missouri -7.5 O/U 75
Recommendation: Missouri

Missouri enters this matchup with a 2-4 record under new head coach Barry Odom including back-to-back blowout losses at LSU and Florida. In their six games, the Tigers have faced three elite defenses in West Virginia, LSU and Florida and their offense has struggled in those three losses. However, against average or worse defenses, the Tigers’ new passing offense has been good and they will face an opposing defense that they should be able to take advantage of this week in Middle Tennessee State.

MTSU allowed perhaps the worst SEC offense, Vanderbilt, to pile up 47 points with 344 total yards and 5.1 yards per rush.  MTSU also allowed 34 points to La Tech and 44 last week to Western Kentucky. This defense will struggle again against SEC athletes, and I expect Missouri to get back on track against the Blue Raiders.

Missouri should also pose some problems on defense for the MTSU offense. Despite the lopsided score last week Read more

College Football Gambling: Florida International finaly frees itself of Ron Turner

09.27.2016     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Four years ago marked one of the most baffling college football head coaching firings/hirings on record. Mario Cristobal took over Florida International in 2007 and proceeded to go 1-11. But three years later, helped the Panthers reach a bowl game; their first of what was back-to-back postseason appearances. FIU suffered from regression in 2013 (3-9) and Cristobal was mysteriously fired. Rather than reload with another young, up-and-coming coach, FIU decided to bring in Ron Turner. It was a silly hire that was destined to fail, and fail it did. Turner, who went 35-57 at Illinois and 10-30 at FIU, was finally canned this past weekend. The university justified the move by saying it allowed the team a "clean slate" heading into C-USA play. Defensive coordinator Ron Cooper will serve as interim head coach the remainder of the season. This weekend's opponent, Florida Atlantic, was bet from -5.5 to -7.

College Football Betting Preview: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Western Kentucky at Alabama
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -25.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Alabama -29.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Alabama

One of the themes in college football from last week was how bad the SEC looked. Seven losses in the opening weekend was the most ever for the conference, and even in victory, Florida and Tennessee struggled against lesser opponents. For a little over a quarter, it looked like Alabama was going to be part of the ugliness as they trailed USC 3-0 and failed to move the ball on offense. Three quarters later, it was apparent that Alabama was the class of the SEC and the nation after the 52-6 whipping of the Trojans.

Freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts’ entry into the game was the turning point for the Alabama offense, even though he lost a fumble on his first collegiate play. Hurts tossed two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tide piled up over 400 yards of offense in the final three quarters.

On defense, after allowing a USC field goal on their first possession, the Tide completely shut down the USC offense. The Trojans seemingly Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at Vanderbilt Commodores

Middle Tennessee State at Vanderbilt
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
Vanderbilt -6 O/U 48.5
CRIS Current: Vanderbilt -4.5 O/U 47
Recommendation: Middle Tennessee State

Middle Tennessee State offensive coordinator Tony Franklin and Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason will both square off for the first time since 2013 when Franklin was the OC at California and Mason the DC at Stanford. Saturday’s game is also a rematch from last year’s close fought defensive struggle that Vandy won 17-13 in Murfreesboro. This year’s battle has a couple key differences that should sway the outcome in the Blue Raiders favor.

Middle’s offense is led by quarterback Brent Stockstill who is the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year. Although he did not perform well in clutch situations in last year’s game he did manage to put up 286 passing yards against a very stout SEC defense. The Blue Raiders did have difficulty running the football (34 yards) and pushing inside of the red zone (3 trips) and it resulted in only 13 points. In Vanderbilt’s loss to South Carolina last Read more

College Football Handicapping: Tony Franklin takes over already potent MTSU offense

07.27.2016     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In what is being called a "family decision", offensive coordinator Tony Franklin left Cal this past offseason for the same gig at Middle Tennessee State. Franklin, a native of Kentucky, coached at Louisiana Tech, MTSU, Auburn, and Troy prior to a three-year stint in Berkeley. He takes over an MTSU offense that averaged 34 ppg last season behind then-freshman quarterback Brent Stockstill (4,005 yards, 30 TDs, 9 INTs). The Blue Raiders also return top receiver Richie James as well as four starting o-linemen.

“We’re good up the middle, we have our quarterbacks and receivers back," Stockstill said. “I like our offense, where we’re at, and we’re just going to have to improve from where we were last year.”

“You go from a normal drag-racing car to a top-fuel car,” he said with a laugh. “They’ll score fast and we
