NCAAF Betting Notes: Dykes says Cameron is No. 1 quarterback

07.20.2011     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It appears as if Louisiana Tech will (for the time being) go with junior Colby Cameron at quarterback. According to head coach Sonny Dykes, Cameron performed well during the spring as has a good grasp on the offense. Last season, Tech's quarterback rotation was never ending with three different signal callers earning starts. The offense was at its best with veteran Ross Jenkins though he didn't offer much in the way of big play potential. Jenkins has since graduated, leaving Cameron in charge. The Bulldogs also have two JC transfers and incoming freshman Nick Isham should Cameron not deliver. Even with a brutal schedule (seven road games at: Southern Miss, Mississippi State, Idaho, Utah State, Fresno State, Ole Miss and Nevada) we project LT's offense to make a significant jump in the second year under Dykes and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.

Boise State favored by over five TDs against Louisiana Tech

10.26.2010     12:38 PM     Printer Friendly
Louisiana Tech at Boise State -37.5 O/U 64.5

There aren't a lot of factors to consider in the handicap of tonight's Louisiana Tech at Boise State matchup. We know that the Broncos are going to win the game but by how big a margin is what most bettors are currently wondering. Louisiana Tech has played better now that the quarterback situation has settled down but the Bulldogs will still be outclassed at nearly every position. Below is a historical chart of Boise State's against the spread record when laying -30 points or more on the Smurf Turf. The overall mark of 10-5 ATS is impressive though games above -37, the Broncos are a more modest 4-3. There hasn't been much line movement on tonight’s game with CRIS opening at -37 and the current number more or less the same across the board. There has been some upward movement with the total opening at 62.5 and now as high as 65.

Louisiana Tech goes with fourth different quarterback

09.28.2010     06:22 AM     Printer Friendly
Louisiana Tech at Hawaii -9 O/U 60.5

The saga continues as Louisiana Tech (1-3) turns to their fourth different starting quarterback this weekend at Hawaii. Just when we thought Colby Cameron was going to be the long term solution, he was yanked last week in favor of Tarik Hakmi, who completed 22-of-38 for 233 yards. Hakmi wasn't even on the depth to start the season. It is a difficult situation because clearly no one is capable of running the offense that Sonny Dykes and Tony Franklin have designed. But at some point it would be nice to see the team commit to one guy for at least two consecutive weeks. Until that happens, the quarterback situation makes it extremely difficult to get behind the Bulldogs.

Betting Preview: Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Southern Miss at Louisiana Tech
Recommendation: Louisiana Tech 1st half +140 (@ Greek)
Saturday, 4 pm PT – ESPN3

Withal the changes going on at Louisiana Tech, it is no surprise to see them struggle. But heading into this week's game, I see some positives. Against Navy, the Bulldogs stuck with one quarterback, Colby Cameron, and he produced the type of results needed (251 yards, 72% completions) for the team to win. Cameron is inexperienced but has the tools to succeed and with the Bulldogs seemingly no longer playing musical chairs with their signal callers, this offense is going to continue to improve.

But with all of the attention focused on Tech's offense, don't forget that the defense has been pretty bad. Texas A&M and Navy both put up 500+ yards with a lot of the damage coming in the second half. In those two losses, Louisiana Tech was outscored 37-33 in the first half but 48-6 after the break. Now A&M and Navy are a pretty difficult tandem to prepare for. The Aggies Read more

Louisiana Tech player guarantees win over Southern Miss

Southern Miss -3.5 at Louisiana Tech O/U 54.5

When THIS GUY guarantees victory, you respect his determination and drive. But when THIS GUY guarantees victory, you do a Google search to find out exactly who he is. Louisiana Tech running back Lyle Fitte felt it necessary to promise victory this weekend over Southern Miss. Now guaranteeing victory from a proven winner is one thing but coming from the mouth of a kid who put up 87 total yards in three games leaves us skeptical. Nevertheless, the spot for Tech is decent, after hanging with Navy for a half in last week's 37-23 loss. The Bulldogs finally seemed to have found a quarterback as Colby Cameron finished with 271 yards. Southern Miss Read more

The circus continues for Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

09.14.2010     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
Navy -3.5 at Louisiana Tech O/U 48

The Louisiana Tech saga continues as the Bulldogs are now discussing the possibility of naming a fourth different starting quarterback. Tarik Hakmi, who wasn't even on the depth chart two weeks ago, went 6-of-8 for 93 yards and a touchdown in Tech's 48-16 blowout loss to Texas A&M. Apparently the performance was good enough to potentially earn Hakmi a start this weekend against Navy. So the Bulldogs' original No. 1, Steve Ensminger, has yet to play a down a quarterback but saw action at wide receivers last week. Ross Jenkins, who threw 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions last year, isn't what head coach Sonny Dykes wants. And highly touted sophomore Colby Cameron doesn't have much running ability which hinders the offense. At one point against A&M, Cameron and Hakmi were rotating at a rapid fire pace; Cameron for passing plays, Hakim for running – how hard is that to Read more

College Football Betting Market reacts to poor performances

Below are updated line moves for this weekend involving five teams coming off truly horrific performances. Colorado looked lost in its 52-7 loss at Cal. For the second straight week, Colorado State was blasted, this time courtesy of Nevada, 51-6. Tennessee hung with Oregon for a while but was outscored 35-0 in the second half of a 48-13 loss. Minnesota lost to FCS South Dakota 41-38. And Louisiana Tech was crushed by Texas A&M, 48-16. Some of these teams may indeed not be very good as poor efforts are sometimes products of poor teams. The question is, are the moves reactionary or a correction? From initial glace, there looks to be decent betting value with a handful of these games. Lines courtesy of Bookmaker.

Louisiana Tech continues to make odd moves

09.09.2010     07:16 PM     Printer Friendly
During the back half of preseason camp, Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes named Steve Ensminger the team's starting quarterback. But right before the start of the season, Dykes "opened back up" the position because last year's starter Ross Jenkins had played so well in practice. In Tech's Week 1 win over Grambling, Jenkins got the start but eventually gave way to sophomore Colby Cameron. Now a day prior to their contest at Texas A&M, Cameron, who has never started a collegiate game, will get the starting nod. Still no word on what happen to Ensminger.

And of the four Bulldogs who were suspended for last week's game, Dykes sent three of them home for good. Two of which were wide receivers Read more

Louisiana Tech offense off to a slow start

09.07.2010     06:00 AM     Printer Friendly
The Sonny Dykes/Tony Franklin era at Louisiana Tech didn't get off to the fast start most expected. The Bulldogs managed only 20 points and 336 total yards in a win over FCS Grambling. Ross Jenkins started at quarterback but eventually gave way to Colby Cameron in the second half. The duo combined for 23-of-31, 196 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs. Steve Ensminger was originally slated to be the team's starter but missed practice during the week and did not play. Dykes said that all three could play this week at Texas A&M. Tech is a 18.5-point underdog to the Aggies. We'll update later in the week the status of the four suspened players.

"We didn't feel like we played as well as we're capable of playing, which is disappointing," Dykes said. "But I don't think — if you go back and look at history — I don't think you're going to Read more

Louisiana Tech names Ensminger starting QB

08.16.2010     02:34 PM     Printer Friendly
Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes announced that quarterback Steve Ensminger will be the team's starting quarterback to begin the season. Ensminger, who transferred in from Auburn, was on Tech's depth chart as a tight end last season under former head coach Derek Dooley. Ross Jenkins had been the Bulldogs’ starter for the better part of the past two seasons. Tech will adopt a more high-octane offensive attack under Dykes who hired Tony Franklin to serve as his offensive coordinator. The Bulldogs open the season against Grambling before traveling to Texas A&M in Week 2.

“We felt like it was the best time to name him the starting quarterback,” Dykes said in a release. “There is still a possibility that it could change but he has done enough to distance himself from the other quarterbacks. We need time to invest a number of reps in our starting quarterback and Read more
