College Football Betting Alert: TCU QB Casey Pachall arrested for DWI

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa State at TCU

Our Sports Options screen just went black as news broke TCU quarterback Casey Pachall was arrested for DWI earlier this morning. Pachall went out like a winner though, blowing a robust 0.15 BAC. The Horned Frogs were around a 10-point favorite prior to the announcement.

College Football Betting: TCU prepares for life in the Big XII

07.24.2012     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
TCU preps for its first season in the Big XII. The biggest question mark is whether or not the defense can bounce back AND handle some of the high-powered offenses of the Big XII. Last season, the Horned Frogs finished 32nd in total defense (347.4) and allowed 50 points to Baylor, 40 to SMU and 35 to Boise State. Over the last four years, TCU went 6-2 SU and 4-4 ATS vs. BCS Conference opponents.

TCU Total Defense Last 5 years
2011: 32nd - 347.4 ypg
2010: 1st - 228.5 ypg
2009: 1st - 239.7 ypg
2008: 1st - 217.8 ypg
2007: 15th - 323.6 ypg

"You've got to be prepared," said TCU defensive end Stansly Maponga. "The speed is going to be different."

"People said: 'You're not going to be playing New Mexico anymore. You're not going to be playing Vegas anymore,'" Patterson continued. "Yeah, but those were 50-point ball games. What's reality? Because all you have to do is win by one point to get to where you need to go."

Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. TCU Horned Frogs

Poinsettia Bowl
Louisiana Tech vs. TCU
Wednesday, 5 pm PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: TCU -11 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: TCU -9.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno Power Rating: TCU -11.5

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: Before the season kicked off I suspected that TCU would struggle to duplicate some of the its recent results with so much roster turnover. While it certainly wasn’t a cakewalk they played better than I had anticipated. The offense in particular outperformed any projection I had coming into the season, ranking ninth nationally while scoring over 40 points per game. Quarterback Casey Pachall is having a phenomenal year and this ground game has been awesome with the three-headed attack of Waymon James, Matthew Tucker and Ed Wesley. But for a team that’s played in back-to-back BCS bowl games, winding up in the Poinsettia Bowl could be a real let Read more

College Football Pointspread Preview: BYU Cougars at TCU Horned Frogs

BYU at TCU (Friday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opener: TCU -12 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: TCU -13.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno Power Rating: TCU -11

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: I’m not sure I buy into the notion that BYU’s offense is growing. Sure, since the switch to quarterback Riley Nelson the Cougars have enjoyed a nice string of wins and points (41 ppg). But look at that schedule and you’ll notice it’s littered with abysmal defensive teams; San Jose State and Oregon State are tied for 83rd nationally in scoring defense while Idaho State ranks 105th in the FCS. I’d say this team hasn’t been tested in the slightest and any perceived improvement may be premature.

Granted, TCU’s defense looked as bad as any in the country in its Week 1 loss to Baylor.  Quarterback Robert Griffin torched the Horned Frogs and the track Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper College Football Bold Predictions for 2011

09.02.2011     01:33 PM     Printer Friendly
Don’t you wish you could have predicted Texas’ 5-7 debacle or Auburn’s BCS Championship? Had those statements been made prior to last season, most would have considered them gibberish. But as bettors, we know outlandish outcomes happen all of the time and accurately calling for one can be extremely satisfying. Each year the Sportsmemo Handicappers try their best to provide a couple of potential long shots for the upcoming season. Poorly named but wildly popular, he are our BOLD PREDICTIONS for the 2011 seasons.

Erin Rynning’s Bold Prediction – UCLA will win the PAC-12 Championship
Obviously, representing the PAC-12 South is on the bold side to begin with, but winning the league is admittedly pretty far out.  What’s perhaps even loonier is that the Bruins could start the season 2-4 and still achieve what I’m calling for.  Of course, for any of this to occur, UCLA needs to be much, Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: History tells us TCU will decline in 2011

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After going a perfect 13-0 last year and 12-0 (regular season) in 2009, I’ll call for TCU to lose more games in the first two weeks of 2011 than they have in the entire last two seasons combined.

The Horned Frogs are clearly in a period of transition having lost more than half of their starters from a season ago, many of whom were multi-year starters. While Gary Patterson has improved the level of the program during his tenure there are clearly cycles to how this program wins. Build the talent, keep that talent, peak that talent and then start over.

In 2002 and 2003 TCU went a combined 21-4 before going 5-6 in 2004. That year they had to completely reload the defense, showed surprisingly bad numbers and couldn’t maintain their level of success from the previous two seasons as a result.

In 2005 and 2006 with continuity at quarterback and for the most part on defense, the Frogs rebounded to go a combined 22-3. In 2007, the first year Andy Dalton came into the mix along with eight other new Read more

Heavy steam on Baylor; Sportsbooks finally hang Oregon/LSU line

08.31.2011     11:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the bigger lines moves of the morning saw TCU pounded down from -6 to -4/-4.5 for its Friday matchup at Baylor. Another big move was Missouri hammered up from -16 to -20.5 against Miami (OH). Nearly all of the 7's on the Idaho/Bowling Green game were taken out with the Vandals now 6-point home chalk. And we are finally starting to see some offshore and Vegas sportsbooks post odds on the much anticipated Oregon/LSU matchup. 5Dimes was one of the few books accepting bets over the last week but CRIS, Pinnacle and Hilton joined the party earlier today. The Ducks reopened as a 4-point favorite.

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: The first proverbial “revenge" game of the season takes place in Waco on Friday night as Baylor is out for blood against highly ranked and highly regarded TCU. Fresh off a perfect 13-0 season and a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin, much is expected from the Horned Frogs in 2011. This despite the fact that they must replace second round draft choice and four-year starter Andy Dalton, Mr. Everything Jeremy Kerley, top sack master Wayne Daniels, and four offensive linemen. NCAAF Handicapping: Week 1 analysis based on last year's lines

08.08.2011     11:43 AM     Printer Friendly
A good way to judge some of the betting market’s initial feelings is to compare the lines from last year's meetings (see chart below). From a generic standpoint, the switch in venue subtracts/adds six points – obviously some home fields are worth more or less than others. Some of the more intriguing differences include Colorado who won and covered as a 13.5-point home favorite over Hawaii but finds itself a 6-point road underdog (some opening lines were +7, +7.5 and +8) in Honolulu. TCU steamrolled Baylor in Fort Worth as three touchdown favorites but the betting market doesn’t see as big a gap this edition with the Horned Frogs -6.5/-7 in Waco. Texas was a 31-point favorite in Houston (Reliant Stadium) for last year’s meeting against Rice. Off a dismal 5-7 campaign, the Longhorns are a more modest 22-point favorite in Austin. Colorado State cruised to a 38-14 win as 16-point home chalk against woeful New Mexico but the Rams are now just a -4/-4/5 point favorite in Albuquerque.
