Handicapper Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan Wolverines

Notre Dame -3 at Michigan O/U 55.5

Big game at the Big House in Ann Arbor with Notre Dame taking on Michigan tomorrow evening. First night game ever at Michigan Stadium, and along with over 100,000 (faithful?) fans in attendance, the Wolverines have the series history trends on their side as the underdog is 13-2 ATS in this series with eight of the last 10 games resulting in outright upsets.  But Notre Dame checks in with a 15-3 SU record as road favorite since 2000, including 6-0 SU and 5-0-1 ATS off a loss. Head coach Brian Kelly’s teams have been outstanding off a loss in his coaching career, and no doubt the Irish will be focused for a prime time effort following last week’s upset at home to South Florida in a weather-delayed game.

The pressure to win is really mounting on these two former Read more

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: How "must win" can it get for Notre Dame who already appears to be in a state of panic following the switch in starting quarterbacks? I don't think it really matters who starts – both Crist and Rees appear comparable in ability – but what stands out is two weeks ago, Brian Kelly boldly announced that Crist would be the starter "for 13 weeks". That tells us that Kelly is feeling the heat and if he's already losing Read more

Sportsbook benefits from rainout in Ann Arbor

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' MGM sportsbook managed to avoid a heavy loss after the Western Michigan/Michigan game was called due to weather. The MGM said a vast majority of tickets were written on the Wolverines. According to Vegas rules, a game must go 55 minutes to be considered action.

"We were going to lose on the game," MGM Resorts sports book director Jay Rood told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "That was by far the biggest public-backed game on the board. The ticket count was ridiculous, like 20-1 for Michigan."

NCAAF Betting Notes: Michigan will still utilize Robinson as a runner

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Michigan at Michigan -14.5 O/U 61

Despite changing to a pro-style offense, the Michigan Wolverines would be silly not to utilize quarterback Denard Robinson's running ability at least somewhat, right? According to offensive coordinator Al Borges, while Robinson won't be asked to run the ball nearly 20 times per game like last season, we will see him in the shotgun and let loose in similar fashion to what we witnessed in 2010. The biggest emphasis placed on Robinson is for him to follow the "live to see another day" mantra meaning running out of bounds for a gain of five is just as effective long term as taking on multiple tacklers for a gain of eight. The Wolverines opened as a 14.5-point home favorite over Western Michigan for Week 1.

"He's still going to be running the football," Borges said, adding Robinson will be Read more

Teddy Covers reports on Golden Nugget NCAAF openers Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Popular “bet on” teams at the Golden Nugget when the first college football lines of the season were posted this past Friday included Tennessee, Georgia, Notre Dame, Northwestern and LSU. All five of those schools took multiple bets in more than one game, driving the line in their direction.

Popular “bet against” teams included Auburn, Michigan, TCU, Mississippi State and Florida. All five of those schools were fade material; either shorter favorites or bigger underdogs now than they were at the opener.

Here’s a brief synopsis of those 10 teams, in an effort to explain the betting attention they received:

Tennessee came on strong down the stretch last year winning its last four regular season games to earn a bowl bid in a season that could have been a complete disaster. After last year’s growing pains, the Vols finally have the same head coach returning for the first time in four years. Early bettors respect that continuity and were willing to Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Odds to Win Big Ten Championship

06.01.2011     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
The Big Ten welcomes the addition of Nebraska and a two-division format for 2011. Each team will play eight conference games; five against their division and three against the opposing division.

Nebraska is a -250 favorite to win the Legends Division and +150 to take the Big Ten crown. The Cornhuskers drew a fairly difficult schedule by playing Leaders Division contenders Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State. Iowa (+300) and Michigan State (+350) are also expected to be in the mix. The Spartans have arguably the most difficult schedule in the Big Ten with road trips to Ohio State, Nebraska and Iowa as well as a home tilt against Wisconsin.

In the Leaders Division, Ohio State's stock plummeted following head coach Jim Tressel's resignation. Tack on the uncertainly of player eligibility and it is easy to see why oddsmakers list the Buckeyes as the third betting favorite in the division. Penn State now becomes the de facto favorite at +150 followed by Wisconsin at +175. The Badgers return only 10 starters from last Read more

Gator Bowl Handicapping Preview: Mississippi State vs. Michigan

Gator Bowl @ Jacksonville, Fla.
Mississippi State -5 vs. Michigan O/U 59.5
January 1, 10:30 am PT – ESPN2

Overview: There is no way to try and sugarcoat Michigan’s defense as the numbers simply don’t provide bettors much faith that they’ll be able to stop anyone. In five losses, the Wolverines allowed 39.6 ppg. In eight conference games, they allowed 39.3 ppg. Their month-by-month scoring defense plummeted from 23 ppg in September to 37 ppg in October to 41.5 ppg in November. Mississippi State is far from a well-oiled offensive machine, but they can wear down Michigan late in the game and simply run their way to victory. The interesting factor is that the Bulldogs allowed over 30 points just once this season. Can Michigan win or at least cover against a decent team and not score 30 points?

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Mississippi State -2.5) Huge disparity in defensive acumen here as Read more

Wisconsin -4 at Michigan O/U 67
Recommendation: Wisconsin
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN

The Badgers look to hold serve in their quest for a BCS berth with a huge trip to Michigan. The Big Ten title is still up for grabs between Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin. If all three teams win out it looks as if Wisconsin (No. 7 BCS) would garner the automatic bid ahead of the Buckeyes (No. 9 BCS) and the Spartans (No.12). It may be difficult for Ohio State to leapfrog the Badgers since Wisconsin won the head-to-head meeting. Next week the Badgers host Northwestern, who just last week lost their key cog, quarterback Dan Persa.

The Badgers certainly look like a team peaking at the right time with recent wins over Ohio State, Iowa and of course their 83-20 demolition of Indiana last weekend. Stalwart running back John Clay is doubtful this week, but the Badgers remain strong in the running game. They are on solid footing with James White and Montee Ball running behind a stout offensive Read more

Michigan -3 at Penn State O/U 55.5
Recommendaton: Michigan

I made a play and used Michigan in a contest earlier this week at less than -3 and the Wolverines have taken a little money as a field goal road favorite at Penn State Saturday night. Michigan (5-2) and Penn State (4-3) are both 1-2 in conference play and the Nittany Lions have not met expectations with little to celebrate in Happy Valley. Penn State coach Joe Paterno announced that former walk-on quarterback Matt McGloin will start at quarterback as freshman starter Rob Bolden suffered a concussion in last weeks game. So a already inefficient offense averaging the fewest first downs per game and just 20 points per game (18 in conference play) now has more concerns at quarterback. While Michigan’s defense has been dreadful, the Nittany Lions will have to generate offense to keep up with the ‘Wolves potent attack. Despite a Wolverine pass defense that allows nearly 300 yards per game and over 8.0 yards per pass play, look for the Read more

Penn State to start McGloin at quarterback

10.29.2010     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Michigan -3 at Penn State O/U 53.5

Penn State will start former walk-on quarterback Matt McGloin this weekend against Michigan. MCGloin threw two touchdowns in relief of Robert Bolden (concussion) last week against Minnesota.

"We are going to go with Mac to start," Paterno said. "There is an outside chance Bolden will be OK, and we will see how it goes. Mac is good enough to get the job done."
