College Football Gambling: Washington seeks turnaround with new defensive staff

08.16.2012     12:55 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Moving the football and putting up points on the board was not an issue for the Washington Huskies last season. Quarterback Keith Price quietly put up Andrew Luck-type numbers and the Huskies were last seen racking up 56 points in the Alamo Bowl. The problem, in that game and others, was that they couldn't stop anyone. Despite the 56-point outburst, Baylor hung 67 and the Huskies amazingly failed to cover +9.5. And Baylor wasn’t the only squad to pick on this defense. Against ranked teams Nebraska, Oregon, USC and Stanford, UW allowed 47.5 ppg. Fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian did what any coach would do and brought in a completely new defensive staff led by coordinator Justin Wilcox (Boise State, Tennessee). Wilcox will try to implement a 3-4 scheme this season, putting more emphasis on man-to-man coverage and pressure.

"Aggressive, swarming to the ball, man-to-man coverage," said safety Justin Glenn, describing the new

NCAAF Betting: UConn gives starting quarterback job to transfer

08.03.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
When a starting quarterback returns but gets beat out by another player, we typically view that as a good sign. UConn's passing game was pretty weak last year with Johnny McEntee (51.3%, 12-8 TD-INT, 175.8 ypg) under center. So second-year head coach Paul Pasqualoni named JC transfer Chandler Whitmer his guy. Whitmer originally went to Illinois but wasn't going to see the field so transferred to Kansas' Butler CC where he threw for over 3,000 yards last season.

Alamo Bowl Betting Preview: Washington Huskies vs. Baylor Bears

Alamo Bowl
Washington vs. Baylor-
Thursday, 5 pm PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: Baylor -8.5 O/U 76.5
CRIS Current: Baylor -9 O/U 79
Rob Veno Power Rating: Baylor -7

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: I made a lot of money on Baylor this season including its season finale blowout win over Texas. But my attraction towards the Bears was mostly when they were in the role of short favorite or underdog. It becomes tricky laying over a touchdown with a team that had a real difficult time stopping good offenses – especially on the road. In four true road games, Baylor allowed 30, 59, 58 and 36 and finished 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS. At home, they had the big wins over Texas and Oklahoma but don't forget they slipped past Missouri by a field goal and opened the season with a two-point win over what ended up to be a good but far from great TCU squad.

Washington had a real difficult time hanging with upper class foes. In games against Nebraska, Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas State's Freeze takes Ole Miss gig

12.05.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois

Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze was named head coach of Ole Miss earlier today. Freeze was ASU's offensive coordinator in 2010 and then took over for head coach Steve Roberts and led the Red Wolves to a 10-2 mark this year. It hasn't been decided if Freeze will coach ASU in the upcoming Bowl against Northern Illinois. Last year there were two examples of lower-tier coaches accepting better gigs before the postseason. In both instances, an interim coach was named. After losing in the MAC Championship, Jerry Kill left Northern Illinois two days later for Minnesota but the Huskies rolled over Fresno State, 40-17, in the Humanitarian Bowl. Miami-Ohio's Mike Haywood left for Pittsburgh following the win over NIU yet the RedHawks went on to beat Middle Tennessee in the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Washington QB Price doubtful vs. Oregon State

11.16.2011     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Washington at Oregon State

Washington got some good news yesterday as quarterback Keith Price's MRI (knee) showed no damage. He was however noticeably limping at practice. The question now becomes, is it worth it to play Price at less than 100% with the Apple Cup looming? The Huskies are already bowl eligible at 6-4 and obviously have no shot at winning the PAC-12 North Division. Price has been phenomenal this season with the league's third-best QB rating. But he has taken a beating with ankle, shoulder and now knee problems. If Price doesn't play, the Huskies would turn to freshman Nick Montana who has seen action in four games this season. UW opened as a 3.5-point road favorite but most sportsbooks have taken the game off Read more

Louisville Cardinals burn bettors after overdosing on video game

Louisville at Connecticut pk O/U 40.5

If you had a losing ticket with Louisville last week, don't toss blame head coach Charlie Strong's way. Blame it on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Damn kids.

“I said on Tuesday we have guys that miss class because they want to stay (up) all night and play that video game, whatever it was,” Strong said Monday at his weekly news conference. “I didn’t even know what it was, but it’s such a big deal.”

Receiver Damian Copeland tweeted at Smith: “Boi You Know U A Gamer When U have To Tape Your Fingers Up Before You Play The Game” — that was in reference to

Tuesday College Football Gambling Notes: MAC doubleheader

11.08.2011     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Two matchups in the MAC tonight with both having postseason implications. Toledo (5-4, 4-1) plays its final home game of the season against Western Michigan (5-4, 3-2). The Rockets are tied atop the West Division with Northern Illinois (6-3, 4-1). After allowing 63 points in last week's loss to the Huskies, Toledo vows for a better defensive performance against the Broncos. That may be tough considering WMU quarterback Alex Carder continues to put up monster numbers. Meanwhile, NIU also acknowledges it will have to play better defense in order to win for a third straight week on the road. Bowling Green (4-5, 2-3) had 10 days to prepare for tonight and says the defense is Read more

College Football Handicapper Pick: Oregon Ducks at Washington Huskies

Oregon at Washington
Recommendation: Washington +10 first half (CRIS)

I've been playing against Oregon in the first half for most of its PAC-10 games. The key as I've learned is making sure the opponent is halfway competent. Colorado for example was simply outclassed and had no shot to answer offensively. But as we saw last week with Washington State, teams that can move the football can compete against the Ducks for stretches. My logic for this play is as followed: teams obviously get up for playing Oregon and with a clean slate, fresh bodies, and a game plan to work from, we don't see the "gap" in the first half that often develops in the second half. In the second half is where Oregon is so dangerous. The Ducks often take a casual approach to start the game; sizing up their opponent and patiently waiting to put together a run. When that run comes, and it almost always does, opposing teams go into panic mode, stray from their Read more

Football Gambling Preview: Northern Illinois Huskies at Toledo Rockets

Northern Illinois at Toledo -8.5 O/U 67

Great matchup in the MAC tonight with Northern Illinois traveling to the Glass Bowl to take on Toledo. The Rockets (4-0) sit atop the East Division standings while the Huskies (3-1) trail by one game. Both teams enter off of a bye week. NIU dominated last year's matchup with a 65-30 win. There were 51 points scored in the third quarter.

Statistically, Northern Illinois leads the MAC at 489 ypg of offense in league play. Toledo ranks fourth at 450 ypg. The Rockets are much more sound on the defensive side of the football, holding MAC foes to 363 ypg while NIU ranks second to last as 432 ypg. The Rockets are clearly more respected in the betting markets (5-3 ATS) having played Ohio State tough, "losing" to Syracuse on a bogus call, and crushing a strong Temple team. NIU meanwhile doesn't have a marquee performance. They lost at Kansas which obviously doesn't look good, were blown out at Wisconsin 49-7, and Read more

College Football Wednesday Free Pick: UConn Huskies at Pittsburgh Panthers

Connecticut at Pittsburgh
Recommendation: Over 21 first half

Going to buck the conventional wisdom that Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham will be fed a steady diet of the ball from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. Head coaches always like to fix what's broken and head coach Todd Graham's spread passing system has come to a screeching halt recently. Expect Graham, who has had extra time to prepare, to notice how poorly the Huskies have fared against similar spread passing teams Western Michigan and West Virginia. Obviously quarterback Tino Sunseri is not WMU's Alex Carder and he doesn't have the weapons WVA's Geno Smith has, but those teams did expose Connecticut's secondary (again without top CB Wreh-Wilson tonight) to the tune of 1,031 total yards and 81 points.

Pitt's offensive line has been a mess in pass protection but quick hitting patterns and enough time for a few shots over the top should be expected here. Graham is always a threat Read more
