NCAAF Pointspread Analysis: Tough call for bettors in Iowa State-UConn game

09.13.2011     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa State at Connecticut -4 O/U 44.5

How easy of a play should it be to bet against Iowa State after its monumental triple overtime win over in-state rival Iowa? The decision unfortunately isn't so easy when we look at the current state of UConn's passing game. Originally viewed as perhaps strategic, Paul Pasqualoni's decision to keep things a secret and play three signal callers has now revealed itself as a major issue. In two games, UConn quarterbacks have combined for 23-of-50, 332 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs. The lone touchdown pass was a 55-yard heave from Scott McCummings – ironically his only pass attempt of the season thus far. Pasqualoni remains non-committal about who will start and play on Friday. Even with the quarterback problems, this game Read more

College Football ATS Preview: Washington Huskies at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Washington at Nebraska (12:30 pm PT – ABC)
CRIS Opening Line: Nebraska -18.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current Line: Nebraska -16.5 O/U 54
Rob Veno Power Rating: Nebraska -13

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: Last week was another lackluster performance for Nebraska who needed 21 fourth quarter points to pull away from Fresno State. The Cornhuskers were somehow outgained by the Bulldogs 444-438 and quarterback Taylor Martinez, outside of a few big plays, continued to struggle when asked to throw a forward pass (10-of-21, 219 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT). One of the few positives was Nebraska’s run game (219 yards, 6.3 ypc) but against Fresno’s defense those numbers were to be expected.

NCAAF Handicapping: New up-tempo offenses in Week 1

09.06.2011     01:24 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

Taking a look at some of the team’s who made offseason moves to more up-tempo offenses and how they fared in Week 1.

Ball State: First-year head coach Pete Lembo couldn’t have asked for more from quarterback Keith Wenning, who finished 23-of-29, 173 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, in BSU’s 27-20 upset win over Indiana. The run game was also effective with 210 yards on 4.6 ypc. Overall, the Cardinals ran 75 offensive plays. The game however went under the total of 53 (was bet as high as 56.5).

West Virginia: Most were expecting much more but the Mountaineers offense didn’t look all too different than previous editions in their rain-shortened win over Marshall. Quarterback Geno Smith had a solid game (26-of-35, 249 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) but the run game never got going (42 yards, 1.6 ypc). The game (34-14) Read more

College Football Betting Notes: Quarterback situations for Week 2

Quarterback news and notes following Week 1’s games.

Memphis announced freshman Taylor Reed will start Saturday's game at Arkansas State. Reed, a lefty, was 23-of-35, 149 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT in last week's loss to Mississippi State.

Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe expects quarterback Tanner Price (knee) to start Saturday against NC State.

North Texas' quarterback situation is somewhat up in the air after a dismal 41-16 loss to Florida International.

UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel said Kevin Prince is Read more

College Football Betting: 5 Things We Must Know About the Big East

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On today’s Sportsmemo Radio Show, handicapper Rob Veno discussed Five Things We Must Know About the Big East. Below are the list topics. You can listen to the Podcast segment right here.

1. South Florida will average 30 ppg this season.
2. Syracuse will not make a bowl game this season.
3. West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith will be a legitimate Heisman candidate and the Mountaineers’ defense will be better than many think.
4. Louisville will be the best “over” team where value is concerned in the conference.
5. UConn will use a three-headed QB system with separate packages for each which could make them very difficult to prepare for.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Sarkisian to give Price three-game test run

07.20.2011     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It looks as if Washington Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian will use the first three games of the season to determine whether or not Keith Price is the right man for the job. Price if you remember started for an injured Jake Locker against Oregon (14-of-28, 127 yards, 1 TD). If he doesn't pan out after those first three games (vs. Eastern Washington, vs. Hawaii and at Nebraska), Sarkisian could look the way of redshirt frosh Nick Montana.

"We have to find out what he is,'' he said. "We're not going to expect him to come out and play like it's the Super Bowl the first game, but we need to find out how he plays in games and we'd rather find that out early. The reality is we are going to figure out who he is as we play those first three weeks and assess those strengths and weaknesses and really who he is and the way he plays and that will give us an idea (of the direction of the Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: UConn faces offensive issues under Pasqualoni

06.23.2011     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former Syracuse head coach Paul Pasqualoni begins in first year at UConn after Huskies won the Big East and reached a BCS bowl under long-time head coach Randy Edsall. The biggest issue for Pasqualoni will be the offense with only five returning starters. The Huskies lost running back Jordan Todman (1,695 yards) to the NFL and leading receiver Michael Smith (615 yards) was recently ruled ineligible. The quarterback situation is dicey with the graduation of Zach Frazer and departure of Cody Endres. UConn will have to decide between four candidates: Michael Nebrich, Michael Box, Scott McCummings and Johnny McEntee. Box was the only one in the group to play last season (17 attempts). The Golden Nugget posted odds on two of UConn's games (+13.5 at West Virginia and +10 at Pittsburgh). Those lines are not too far removed from last year as the Huskies closed +6 against WVU and +4.5 against Pitt in Storrs – Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Odds to Win MAC Championship

06.02.2011     02:03 PM     Printer Friendly
The MAC East was pretty poor last season with Bowling Green, Buffalo and Akron combining for just five wins. But turnarounds are attainable in this conference, just ask Miami who won the East at 10-4/8-1 after going 1-11/1-7 in 2009. Temple is the pick to win the East at +150. The Owls play solid defense and will rely on junior running backs Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown. Former Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio takes over for Al Golden who took his act to Miami (FL). Temple has a very favorable schedule with contenders Toledo and Miami (OH) at home. They also skip Northern Illinois. The RedHawks are the second betting favorite in the East at +175. They weren't the prettiest team (6th in scoring, 3rd in defense in conference play) to watch last year but welcome back 17 starters. There is however the issue of the offseason coaching change. Mike Haywood left for Pittsburgh, a job he was later fired from, and former Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell took over. Miami's downfall could also be its schedule with Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Odds to Win Big East Championship

06.01.2011     02:32 PM     Printer Friendly
West Virginia is your betting favorite to win the Big East at +175. The Mountaineers return 12 starters (4 on defense) and play four of their seven conference games on the road including trips to Cincinnati and South Florida. The Bulls are the surprising second pick at +250. They played well (8-5) at times during Skip Holtz' first season but return only 10 starters. They too play the three home/four road split. Cincinnati (+500) returns a league-high 16 starters including 11 on defense. The Bearcats finished last in points allowed last season (28.0 ppg) but should see a big boost with the amount of experience returning. Pittsburgh goes from ultra-conservative Dave Wannstedt to Tulsa's Todd Graham. The Panthers welcome back 16 starters and play four of their seven Big East games at home.

UConn somehow slipped into the BCS a year ago but will have a tough time returning (hence the +3000 price tag) with Big East Player of the Year Jordan Todman (141.3 ypg rushing) now in the NFL. The Huskies play arguably the three Read more

NCAA Football Handicapping: Odds to Win PAC-12 Championship

05.31.2011     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
The PAC-10 is no longer with Colorado and Utah joining to create the two-division PAC-12. The conference will play a nine-game schedule with five contests within the division. The four California schools (Cal, Stanford, USC and UCLA) will face off every season despite being separated in North and South divisions. USC is not eligible to compete for a conference crown but games against the Trojans do count. The team with the best conference record will host the title game on December 3.

Oregon is the odds on favorite to win the North Division and conference crown. The Ducks play five of their nine conference games in Eugene including rival Oregon State. Oregon will however travel to Stanford, who is priced as the second betting entry in the North. The Cardinal also play five league home games. Not helping its cause, Washington State will play only three true home league games with a "semi-neutral" tilt against Oregon State slated for Seattle. On the flip side, the Beavers benefit tremendously by not only play Read more
