College Football Handicapping: Are betting consensus websites helpful?

Stanford -6.5 at Washington O/U 48

As a bettor, I'm not really sure what to make of betting consensus websites. For starters, everyone has a different number. Thursday's Stanford-Washington game ranges from 56% to 66% on the Cardinal based on the three opinions I found – I’m sure there are many more. Where they are getting these numbers and from whom, I have no idea. Who do they consider to be the "public?" Is it guys who don't bet? Medium-sized players? Credit players at Pinnacle who bet four figures a game? I mean, it is always nice to hear that 65% of the "public" is on a single-event NFL underdog but beyond that profile, I don't think I've ever let a consensus percentage sway my opinion of a game. That being said, I did happen to stumble upon a pretty telling quote from SB Nation's Stanford-Washington preview.

"The 7-point spread was bet down to -6.5 at most shops we track, but we are still seeing near two-thirds of the betting action on Stanford, according to the consensus data we gather from sportsbooks," said Jack Randall of

College Football Betting Preview: Washington Huskies at LSU Tigers

Washington at LSU
Ian Cameron's Recommendation:
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -23 O/U 56
CRIS Current: LSU -24 O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: LSU -23.5

Washington makes a rare trip to the East Coast to play LSU in a big non-conference clash on Saturday night on ESPN. The last meeting between these teams took place in 2009 in Seattle with LSU winning 31-23.

The Washington offense enters this game off a mediocre performance in Week 1’s win over San Diego State. Quarterback Keith Price and the offense saw multiple drives stall in Aztecs territory and the offense only accounted for 14 of the team's 21 points. They'll be facing a vaunted LSU defense but maybe not one that was adequately tested by North Texas last week. I think the door is open for Washington to have at least a decent showing on offense as one of the few weaknesses defensively for the Tigers is their Read more

College Football ATS Analysis: Bettors fade UConn for second straight week

09.04.2012     12:12 PM     Printer Friendly
Looks like there are group of bettors that don't feel too highly about the UConn Huskies. For a second straight week, we've seen a ton of anti-UConn money come pouring in with NC State up to as high as -6.5 road chalk for Saturday’s contest. In Week 1, the Huskies opened -25 vs. UMass and were bet down as low as -20.5 before closing -21. They held the Minutemen to 59 yards en route to a 37-0 victory. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

College Football Betting Update: SDSU still mulling over no punt philosophy

08.31.2012     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly

San Diego State at Washington -14.5 O/U 56.5

San Diego State head coach Rocky Long hasn't made up his mind whether or not he will implement the no-punts-inside-the-50 rule against Washington.

"Additional plays would allow you to score a lot more points," Long told The San Diego Union-Tribune. "It also puts a whole lot of pressure on the defense."

"We are still considering whether we are going to do that or not, but that's the way we've practiced from day one in camp," he said.

"The one thing it can lend itself to, if a team has a third-and-nine, third-and-10 from the 42-yard-line, 43-yard-line, you can really be willing to run the football in

College Football Betting Alert: Iowa taking money for Week 1 game vs. Northern Illinois

08.22.2012     12:34 PM     Printer Friendly
Interesting to see the line progression of next Saturday's Iowa-Northern Illinois matchup. The game is being played at Chicago's Soldier Field which despite being in close proximity to DeKalb will still heavily favor the Hawkeyes who draw a lot of students/alumni from the Chicagoland area. Initial money came on Iowa pushing the opening line from -6 to -7. We then saw it climb to -8 before another recent push bumped it to -10. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

College Football Gambling: Washington seeks turnaround with new defensive staff

08.16.2012     12:55 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Moving the football and putting up points on the board was not an issue for the Washington Huskies last season. Quarterback Keith Price quietly put up Andrew Luck-type numbers and the Huskies were last seen racking up 56 points in the Alamo Bowl. The problem, in that game and others, was that they couldn't stop anyone. Despite the 56-point outburst, Baylor hung 67 and the Huskies amazingly failed to cover +9.5. And Baylor wasn’t the only squad to pick on this defense. Against ranked teams Nebraska, Oregon, USC and Stanford, UW allowed 47.5 ppg. Fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian did what any coach would do and brought in a completely new defensive staff led by coordinator Justin Wilcox (Boise State, Tennessee). Wilcox will try to implement a 3-4 scheme this season, putting more emphasis on man-to-man coverage and pressure.

"Aggressive, swarming to the ball, man-to-man coverage," said safety Justin Glenn, describing the new

NCAAF Betting: UConn gives starting quarterback job to transfer

08.03.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
When a starting quarterback returns but gets beat out by another player, we typically view that as a good sign. UConn's passing game was pretty weak last year with Johnny McEntee (51.3%, 12-8 TD-INT, 175.8 ypg) under center. So second-year head coach Paul Pasqualoni named JC transfer Chandler Whitmer his guy. Whitmer originally went to Illinois but wasn't going to see the field so transferred to Kansas' Butler CC where he threw for over 3,000 yards last season.

Alamo Bowl Betting Preview: Washington Huskies vs. Baylor Bears

Alamo Bowl
Washington vs. Baylor-
Thursday, 5 pm PT – ESPN
CRIS Opener: Baylor -8.5 O/U 76.5
CRIS Current: Baylor -9 O/U 79
Rob Veno Power Rating: Baylor -7

Andrew Lange's Betting Take: I made a lot of money on Baylor this season including its season finale blowout win over Texas. But my attraction towards the Bears was mostly when they were in the role of short favorite or underdog. It becomes tricky laying over a touchdown with a team that had a real difficult time stopping good offenses – especially on the road. In four true road games, Baylor allowed 30, 59, 58 and 36 and finished 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS. At home, they had the big wins over Texas and Oklahoma but don't forget they slipped past Missouri by a field goal and opened the season with a two-point win over what ended up to be a good but far from great TCU squad.

Washington had a real difficult time hanging with upper class foes. In games against Nebraska, Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Arkansas State's Freeze takes Ole Miss gig

12.05.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Arkansas State vs. Northern Illinois

Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze was named head coach of Ole Miss earlier today. Freeze was ASU's offensive coordinator in 2010 and then took over for head coach Steve Roberts and led the Red Wolves to a 10-2 mark this year. It hasn't been decided if Freeze will coach ASU in the upcoming Bowl against Northern Illinois. Last year there were two examples of lower-tier coaches accepting better gigs before the postseason. In both instances, an interim coach was named. After losing in the MAC Championship, Jerry Kill left Northern Illinois two days later for Minnesota but the Huskies rolled over Fresno State, 40-17, in the Humanitarian Bowl. Miami-Ohio's Mike Haywood left for Pittsburgh following the win over NIU yet the RedHawks went on to beat Middle Tennessee in the Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: Washington QB Price doubtful vs. Oregon State

11.16.2011     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Washington at Oregon State

Washington got some good news yesterday as quarterback Keith Price's MRI (knee) showed no damage. He was however noticeably limping at practice. The question now becomes, is it worth it to play Price at less than 100% with the Apple Cup looming? The Huskies are already bowl eligible at 6-4 and obviously have no shot at winning the PAC-12 North Division. Price has been phenomenal this season with the league's third-best QB rating. But he has taken a beating with ankle, shoulder and now knee problems. If Price doesn't play, the Huskies would turn to freshman Nick Montana who has seen action in four games this season. UW opened as a 3.5-point road favorite but most sportsbooks have taken the game off Read more
