College Football Betting Preview: Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boise State at Michigan State
Erin Rynning's Recommendation:
Under
Friday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan State -4.5 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Michigan State -6.5 O/U 46
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Michigan State -6

It’s difficult to write off Boise State in this contest as a +7 underdog.  All they’ve done over the seven year tenure of head coach Chris Petersen is produce a 73-6 record.  Keep in mind they’ve also beaten Oregon, Virginia Tech and Georgia in their last three season openers.  Of course, the immense question in this clash is what Boise will bring to the table after huge losses on both sides of the football.  No question, this is a much, much different team than at any time under Petersen.  The Broncos have to replace quarterback Kellen Moore who posted the best record of any signal caller in college football history, along with five Read more

NCAAF ATS Notes: No A/C, secret game planning highlight Northwestern-Syracuse

Northwestern -1.5 at Syracuse O/U 53.5

Northwestern has been limited in its game planning for Week 1's opener against Syracuse because the Orange closed spring practices to the public. Also note that the Carrier Dome (named for a company which makes air conditioners) is not air conditioned.

“Obviously they’re changing some things,” Fitzgerald said, “or else they would not have closed practice.”

“Game-plan wise we could take the whole dang thing, potentially, and throw it out after the first quarter,” Fitzgerald said Monday. “We’ll try to be as prepared as we can be but be Read more

College Football Gambling Trends: How team fare without a bye week

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Revisiting a blog from last year that tracked the results of college football teams without a bye week during the regular season. The theory is that these teams will eventually wear down both physically and mentally. The results (last three games SU and ATS) aren’t mind-blowing, but the 37% SU winning percentage does stands out. Note that in 2009, virtually the entire Big Ten didn’t have a bye so the numbers are somewhat skewed with “none bye teams” often playing one another. If you completely eliminate the ’09 Big Ten, the overall numbers are even stronger at 23-49 SU and 30-41-1 ATS.

Like most of our studies, we aren’t necessarily looking for a formula to bet blind – they rarely if ever exist. Rather, we find schedule situations that can put teams at an advantage or disadvantage. In the case of not having a bye week, it certainly isn’t helpful and a factor worth adding to your handicap.

Some schools (marked with asterisks) had their bye in Week 1 and played continuously for the remainder of the season. We included them because it really doesn’t serve as an advantage.

This year, California, Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Clemson Tigers vs. Auburn Tigers

Clemson -3.5 vs. Auburn
Rob Veno's Recommendation:
Auburn
Saturday, 4 pm PT, Atlanta - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Clemson -1 O/U 59.5
CRIS Current: Clemson -3.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Clemson -3.5

Highly anticipated matchup at the Georgia Dome on Saturday as Clemson looks to shake off the memory of last season’s Orange Bowl humiliation while Auburn seeks revenge for last year’s 38-24 loss and to prove it is still an SEC threat after a subpar 2011 campaign.

There are a host of interesting circumstances in this game which makes it a tricky handicap. From the Clemson side, they’ll be without sophomore star WR Sammy Watkins (suspended for the first two games) and a quartet of NFL draft selections. They also have a new defensive coordinator in Brent Venables who comes over from Oklahoma. The losses of Watkins and TE Dwayne Allen means that 17 of the 30 catches from last Read more

College Football Gambling: Florida goes with QB rotation vs. Bowling Green

08.28.2012     12:53 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Bowling Green at Florida -29 O/U 48

Perhaps not a good sign that Florida is going with a quarterback rotation for their Week 1 opener against Bowling Green.  Head coach Will Muschamp said either Jacoby Brissett or Jeff Driskel will play the first quarter while the other will play the second quarter. At halftime, the coaching staff will reevaluate the situation. Muschamp said he's not concerned with the QB position but bettors should be, especially if you missed -23 on the opener and are considering laying the current price of -29. When a coach can't commit to one quarterback it more often than not means none of the candidates were good enough to earn the job.

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Navy Midshipmen

Notre Dame vs Navy
Alf Musketa's Recommendation:
Navy
Saturday, 6 am PT, Dublin, Ireland - CBS
CRIS Opener: Notre Dame -17 O/U 58.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -16 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -11.5

One would think a team named the Fighting Irish would have a tremendous advantage playing in Dublin, Ireland. Not so fast. A closer look reveals Notre Dame with many injuries and suspensions for this Week 1 contest. Quarterback Tommy Rees, running back Cierre Wood, cornerback Lo Wood, linebacker Carlo Calabrese and the defensive line which is down to three healthy starters spells potential disaster against a Navy team who at the start of the season is always in tip-top shape.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly has said, "We are working on it every day." He is referring to the Midshipmen's triple option running attack and yes with the entire offseason Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Washington State Cougars at BYU Cougars

Washington State at BYU
Marty Otto’s Recommendation:
Washington State
Thursday, 7:15 PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
BYU -13.5 O/U 58.5
CRIS Current: BYU -13 O/U 62
Reb Veno's Power Rating: BYU -10.5

An early season ESPN game has caught my attention and I think the underdog could have some bite. Washington State travels to Provo to take on a BYU team that won 10 games a year ago. Those 10 wins marked the fifth time in seven prior seasons that the Cougars had posted double-digit wins under Bronco Mendenhall.

BYU obviously has a solid pedigree; they are well coached and boast a solid home field advantage having gone 27-4 straight up here since 2006. Whereas a bit of a quarterback controversy and identity crisis (are we a running team or throwing team?) popped up last year, 2012’s squad looks quite settled. Reports out of Provo suggest the offense looks as dangerous as it has in Read more

College Football Handicapping: Alf Musketa's Line Moves Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In this edition of my line moves report, we'll discuss several significant changes in the college football betting markets. Some of the numbers on key games have been out for over two months, and yet some have not moved at all. I'll tell you why and which way I think they will go.

South Carolina at Vanderbilt
South Carolina opened -4, now -6.5

The first game on the board of the 2012 college football season was hit hard at the opening and we can certainly see why with potential Heisman running back Marcus Lattimore returning to action and a defense that is one of the best in the nation starting seven seniors. Vandy was much improved going 6-7 last season from 2-10 two years ago but they are not the sexy public team here. What I saw was early market players grabbing -6 or less, the public and square sharps jumping on board to take it to -7 and then on Monday the market players taking +7 back. In today's betting market you must be Read more

College Football Gambling: Auburn hopes experience, new DC will spark turnaround

08.27.2012     12:03 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We think it’s reasonable to project that Auburn's defense will be improved in 2012. With only three returning starters, the Tigers finished 10th or 11th in the SEC in every major defensive category last season. This year, they welcome back as many as nine starters and brought in a new coordinator, Brian VanGorder (DC Atlanta Falcons, Georgia). According to local reports, due to the team's lack of experience, they were forced to play a lot of vanilla packages. That is all expected to change under VanGorder who is installing much more sophisticated schemes.

“He laid down the ground rules,” senior defensive back T’Sharvan Bell said. “He said I’m not compromising with anybody. It was going to be his way or no way. That kind of lit up everyone’s eyes that this guy is for real. That’s what we needed. We needed someone who is straightforward and is going to tell you the truth.”

“It means a Read more
