NCAAF Betting News: Arizona State's Graham leans towards unheralded quarterback

08.14.2012     11:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another starting quarterback announcement and according to the media, it's a surprise. Arizona State had a three-man race between Michael Eubank, Michael Bercovici and Taylor Kelly. A lot of folks like to compare Eubank to that of Cam Newton in terms of his size and strength. He also was recruited by Todd Graham during his time a Pitt. Bercovici served as Brock Osweiler's back-up last year and so did Kelly who of the lot was considered the least likely to earn the starting job. You probably know where this is going. Though Week 1's starter hasn't been officially named, Graham says Kelly is currently atop the depth chart. Obviously this could be a way of motivating the other two – especially Eubank who is likely to be the starter at some point. But Kelly is noted for his running ability and Graham likes using quarterbacks in the run game – Tulsa's G.J. Kinne rushed for 561 yards in 2010, and when he wasn't getting sacked eight times per game, Pitt's Tino Sunseri was let loose as well (154 rushing attempts).

College Football Handicapping: UCLA's Mora goes with rookie quarterback

08.14.2012     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA first-year head coach Jim Mora recently announced that redshirt freshman Brett Hundley will be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback (at Rice). Hudley beat out seniors Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut who have combined to throw nearly 1,000 passes during their careers. More often than not, when a rookie quarterback beats out a veteran for the starting gig, it is a positive. Note that the Bruins just lost starting linebacker Pat Larimore. Larimore, the team's leading returning tackler, was forced to retire due to concussions.

"Brett has consistently demonstrated the qualities we value in a starting quarterback and is an outstanding leader who commands the respect of his teammates," Mora said in a statement. "He has shown excellent decision-making skills, and his accuracy and timing continue to improve with each practice. In addition, he has shown the mobility and creativity needed when a play breaks down."

College Football Gambling: Bettors show early love for Michigan State

Boise State at Michigan State -7

Michigan State is expected to start Andrew Maxwell at quarterback for the team's opener against Boise State. According to reports, Maxwell looked the part during a recent scrimmage. Boise State meanwhile has yet to commit to a signal caller. Junior Joe Southwick has the most experience but head coach Chris Peterson wants to keep the position open. The Broncos return only seven starters this season (5 off, 2 def). The betting markets have come out in strong support of the Spartans thus far. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

NCAAF Handicapping: Illinois tries to match last year's defensive output

08.13.2012     01:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Like a lot of bettors, we are curious about how Illinois' offense will to look under first-year head coach Tim Beckman. But perhaps even more important is whether or not the Illini can match last year's defensive output. Under coordinator Vic Koenning, Illinois went from mediocre to really good in just two years. Last season, the stop unit quietly ranked second in the Big Ten in yards per game allowed (286.2) and held its opponents to under 20 ppg. Koenning however has move on (North Carolina DC) leaving Tim Banks in charge. Banks served as DC at Central Michigan and most recently Cincinnati.

“The pieces are in place,” said defensive line coach Keith Gilmore, the holdover from the previous staff. “It can be a lot similar as far as what we accomplished last year.”

“You look at all the different points where we have guys who can dominate,” Illini quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase said. “That’s what makes it tough. You have to be deep on defense, but we have four players who are dominant at what they do. Read more

College Football Betting: San Diego State considering radical philosophy

08.13.2012     11:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Be interesting to how this little experiment plays out. San Diego State head coach Rocky Long is considering testing the waters with the "no punt in opponents' territory" formula this season. The Aztecs' punting game was actually one of the nation's best last year (14th, 43.8 yards per punt), but punter Brian Stahovich graduated. SDSU converted on only 39% of its 4th down plays (9-for-23) in 2011. Nice find by posting forum user Wazvito.

“It makes sense,” he said, seeming almost giddy in talking about the possibilities.

“Additional plays would allow you to score a lot more points,” he said. “It also puts a whole lot of pressure on the defense.”

“It’s a day-to-day theory,” Long said with a grin. “I haven’t decided because we’re getting a feel for it out here. I just read about this guy, and I don’t know if I can do that because everybody in the world is going to say this is not Football 101, right?

“But Read more

College Football Handicapping: Iowa adjusting to new offensive coordinator

08.09.2012     01:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There were times last season when Iowa's offense was fairly explosive. They used the no-huddle in early season victories over Pittsburgh and UL-Monroe but when it was all said and done, the Hawkeyes were just another mediocre Big Ten offense. Quarterback James Vandenberg returns for his senior season but will have to adjust to a new offensive coordinator and new system. Longtime OC Ken O'Keefe moved on to the NFL and Kirk Ferentz brought in former Texas OC Greg Davis. According to reports, Davis runs what is called a "West Coast Hybrid" offense. The Hawkeyes will have plenty of opportunity to break in their new offense as the front half of the schedule is loaded with teams who struggled defensively last season: Iowa State (95th nationally total defense), Northern Illinois (88th), Central Michigan (96th) and Read more

College Football Betting: Ball State offense should take off in 2012

08.08.2012     08:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ball State has the look of one of the better offenses in the MAC heading into 2012. According to Phil Steele, the offensive line has over 100 career starters under its belt – one of the most experienced units in the country. They allowed only 11 sacks last season despite being 32nd nationally in pass attempts. Quarterback Keith Wenning is back after throwing for 2,786 yards, 19 TDs and 11 INTs as is the entire backfield. Head coach Pete Lembo begins his second season after a respectable 6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS mark in 2011.

“I expect the O-line to keep Keith up,” Holtz said. “I expect Keith to throw for yards and touchdowns. I expect the receivers to catch, and the running backs to run.

“We need to start reading defenses more and get more complex in the playbook,” Holtz said. “We know the basics, and now it’s time to dig a little deeper to get what we didn’t pick up last year.”

College Football Betting: Florida offense to look different under former Boise OC

08.07.2012     11:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida enters 2012 with its third different offensive coordinator in three years. Brent Pease, who mostl recently served as Boise State's OC, is set to take over for Charlie Weis (HC Kansas). According to second-year head coach Will Muschamp, there will be some differences with the offense, most notably with formations.

Think lots of motion and shifts and “variations of formation” according to Muschamp.

“From an imagination standpoint, those would be the things that I would see that are going to be drastically different,’’ Muschamp said.

“I do want to complement our players on the retention from spring,’’ Muschamp said. “It was very evident in our first three days on both sides of the ball, which credits our players with the job they did this summer. We are far ahead, after three practices mind you, where we thought we would be at this point on both sides of the ball.

NCAAF Gambling: Leach not messing around in effort to rebuild Washington State

08.07.2012     11:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not a lot of usable information coming out of Pullman these days with Mike Leach taking over at Washington State. There is no official depth chart. Here is an eye-witness account of a recent practice. The one thing we do know is Leach is trying to get as much talent on the field as possible – even if that means having players switch positions. Leach is also in the midst of doing some house cleaning with three defensive starters from last season dismissed from the team.

"Leach isn't playing around," cornerback Nolan Washington said. "We've got to be all in or you get kicked off.

"Now that he's put it in (stricter rules), our team is a lot Read more
