College Football Gambling Update: Virginia names Watford starting QB

08.12.2013     02:15 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

More news out of Virginia camp. Head coach Mike London announced sophomore quarterback David Watford will be the Cavs' Week 1 starter vs. BYU (-3.5). Watford saw action as a true frosh (246 yards, 3 TDs, 4 INTs) but redshirted last season.

College Football Betting: Tenuta takes over as Virginia's defensive coordinator

Virginia has never had much of an offense. Since 2006, the Cavaliers have averaged over 25 ppg and 400 ypg just once. During the offseason head coach Mike London brought in Read more

College Football Betting: Illinois' defense not the same without DC Koenning

08.12.2013     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois' defense is hoping for better results in the second year under defensive coordinator Tim Banks. As mentioned in this article, when Tim Beckman took over, he decided not to keep defensive coordinator Vic Koenning. The transition from Koenning to Banks wasn't a smooth one as the Illini went from allowing 286.2 ypg (2nd Big Ten) to 387.6 ypg (10th Big Ten) last season.

“We just couldn’t put the pieces together,” he said. “Transition is hard. I had a special relationship with him and change is really difficult. But you just have to buy into a new system, which we’ve done.

“Improvement is expected in the second year.”

College Football Gambling: Utah looks for ways to stop PAC-12 offenses

08.12.2013     12:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Utah's defensive plans for this season. It obviously involves trying to stop the PAC-12's spread offenses. Against the top three offenses on their schedule in league play last year (Arizona, USC, and Arizona State), the Utes allowed 474.7 ypg and 36.3 ppg.

"We have a 4-3, a 3-4, a 4-2-5 and a 5-3," Sitake said. "The good teams now are doing a lot of bubble stuff out there so you have to be ready. But what you don’t want to do is be a jack of all trades and a master of none."

"Football is evolving and you have to go in a different direction," said Whittingham. "The offense sets the trend and the defense follows suit and the spread offense necessitates the defense adapt. Basically you won’t see three linebacker defense anymore, it just doesn’t lend itself to these offenses."

College Football Betting: Texas Tech's Kingsbury not shy about game plan

08.12.2013     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You think Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is worried that by running as many offensive plays as possible it will expose his mediocre defense even more? Na.

“But you empathize with the defense because you know if you run 100 plays they’re probably going to be playing 90 plays as well. So you take that into account, but it’s all about wins and losses and if we’re scoring a lot of points that means that we should win a lot of games.”

College Football Betting: USC eager for turnaround under new defensive coordinator

08.09.2013     01:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After allowing nearly 400 ypg in PAC-12 play, USC decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. They replaced him with Clancy Pendergast who is very familiar with the league having served as Cal's DC the past three seasons. The Trojans will reportedly play a 5-2 defense.

"I love it in this defense," Shaw said. "You're pretty much a general back there. You have to know what everyone else is doing. You have to be able to cover and come down into the box. You have to do it all."

"Last year, we only had a few calls. This year, we have so many different types we can call."

NCAA Football Betting: Oddsmakers say Manziel's value is about a touchdown

08.09.2013     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Johnny Manziel saga continues to cause a ruckus in the betting markets.

One of the iconic figures in the industry, Jimmy Vacarro has said publicly he sees Manziel's value at six points, while some other prominent oddsmakers peg his worth at eight. One group of respected bettors went so far as to tell me he’s worth even more than that, equating the star QB's point-spread value to nine points or more.

College Football Handicapping: Erickson to call plays for Utah Utes

08.09.2013     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Since join the PAC-12, Utah has had a difficult time producing much offense. In 2011, the Utes ranked 12th in total offense (310.9 ypg) and in 2012, 11th (324.4 ypg). Former quarterback Brian Johnson was the team's lone offensive coordinator last season (also the youngest in FBS) but head coach Kyle Whittingham decided he could use some help and hired former Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson to serve as co-OC. According to reports, Erickson will have the final say in regards to playing calling.

"People get the misconception that a no-huddle, tempo offense is all pass, but it’s not," he said. "Look at Oregon. They run more than they throw it — you have to have 50-50."

"He has given us a swagger and a sense of confidence," Roderick said. "He has won so many games. It’s kind of funny. He is the oldest guy on the staff but he has the most swagger."

Teddy Covers gives us the scoop on the 'official' College Football Week 1 opening numbers

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday was the first meeting of the season for the legendary 'Tuesday Group' of professional bettors here in Las Vegas. We had a very spirited debate about what the 'official' college football Week 1 opening numbers actually are/were.

With different books posting very different numbers at different times, we decided a 'consensus' opening line was a better choice than using any one book. The initial variance is gone, and the spreads as of RIGHT NOW on 8/7 should be considered the 'market openers'. Track moves from today, not before!

Thursday, 8/29:

SOUTH CAROLINA -10.5 North Carolina
MINNESOTA -14 Unlv
BOWLING GREEN -4 Tulsa
UCF -21.5 Akron
UTAH -3 Utah St
Ole Miss -3 VANDERBILT
Fresno -10 Rutgers
Usc -21.5 HAWAII

Friday, 8/30:

MICHIGAN ST -26.5 Western Michigan
MIAMI-FL -32.5 Florida Atlantic
Texas Tech -6 SMU

Saturday, 8/31:

WISCONSIN -45 Umass
MICHIGAN -31.5 Central Michigan
OHIO ST -36 Buffalo
NC ST -13.5 Louisiana Tech
MARYLAND -19.5 Florida International

College Football Handicapping: Illinois hopes new OC can spark offensive turnaround

08.07.2013     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A common theme here in the blog this summer has been college football teams with crappy offenses that bring in new offensive coordinators. In the case of Illinois, calling last year's offense "crappy" is generous. We're talking about a team that averaged 11.8 ppg in conference play. When something like that occurs the next logical move is to bring in an up-and-coming OC who can quickly turn things around. But the Illini went a different route and hired former Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit who this fall will turn 60 years old. Cubit's WMU teams were typically slightly above average by MAC standards but never prolific when it came to putting points on the board. According to Cubit, the main goal this season is to play faster (Illinois ranked 87th in plays per game last year, Western Michigan ranked 34th). Dating back to the Ron Zook era, U of I’s problem has not been talent but rather developing it. Nowhere is that more apparent than quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase who saw his QB ratings drop from 133.38 to Read more

College Football Handicapping: Early line moves common throughout summer

08.06.2013     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of differing opinions on Florida State's Week 1 contest at Pittsburgh. Going back to early June, we saw the Golden Nugget open with the Seminoles a 13-point road favorite. In early July BetOnline opened FSU -10.5. Late that month, 5Dimes opened FSU -12.5. Last weekend, CRIS posted its openers and decided to hang a -7.5 which was hit immediately and bet up to its current number of -10. These types of "opinions" are common but over the last two months we've seen three different waves of numbers (Golden Nugget GOYs, small sportsbooks, and CRIS) which provides bettors with a good gauge of what oddsmakers and the markets are thinking.
