Betting Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Tulsa at Notre Dame -8.5 O/U 63
Recommendation: Pass
Saturday, 11:30 am PT – NBC

On paper this game has shootout written all over it. The Hurricanes come into this game with the nation’s eighth-ranked offense, averaging close to 500 ypg. The Irish defense has been more than suspect this season and was recently hit with the injury bug as nose guard Ian Williams is out 4-6 weeks and linebacker Carlo Calabrese is currently questionable with a hamstring injury. On the flip side, there is no doubt in my mind that the Irish will move the football. During the offseason Tulsa head coach Todd Graham preached defense and said his squad was going to be much improved. Unfortunately, this is essentially the same weak stop unit we saw all of 2009. The current numbers for the Golden Hurricane are not pretty; 108th total defense (443.2 ypg), 120th pass defense (330.1 ypg).

But as easy as it would be to pull the trigger on the over, there are a few things that concern me. The Irish Read more

Mississippi State could open up passing game against UAB

10.22.2010     08:30 AM     Printer Friendly
UAB at Mississippi State -20 O/U 52

At one point in its win over Florida last week, Mississippi State ran the ball on 24 consecutive plays. According to head coach Dan Mullen, the Bulldogs' offensive plan is often times dictated by how the game plays out. This week, they face a soft UAB pass defense. The Blazers allow 238.2 ypg (90th nationally) and have surrendered nine passing plays of 50 yards or more.

"We're going to have to be able to throw," Mullen said. "We got conservative in things (against Florida). But the game led us to do that. We were running the ball well."

Tulane at UTEP -10 O/U 54.5

UTEP quarterback Trevor Vittatoe says he expects to play in Saturday's home tilt against Tulane. Vittatoe had been dealing with ankle and shoulder injuries.

Betting News: UTEP Miners tight-lipped on starting QB

Tulane at UTEP -9.5 O/U 54

As this local El Paso article points out, when it comes to media friendly coaches, few are easier to deal with than UTEP head coach Mike Price. But heading into this weekend's game against Tulane, the typically talkative Price is keeping his mouth shut regarding the health of his starting quarterback Trevor Vittatoe. Price was asked repeatedly, through a number of angles, about the QB situation but refused to divulge any info. Here is what we do know: Vittatoe has injuries to both his ankle and shoulder. Yesterday, he was late to practice and back-up James Thomas was able to get some reps. According to Thomas, he expects Vittatoe to play though was excited to get an opportunity to practice with the first team.

Price's reply: "I'm not going to discuss any Read more

Betting Preview: SMU Mustangs at Navy Midshipmen

SMU at Navy -1.5 O/U 50.5
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT

A couple of intriguing factors for Saturday's SMU vs. Navy matchup that suggest a potentially high scoring affair. Navy has yet to face a pass first offense: Maryland (102nd nationally passing yards per game), Louisiana Tech (64th), Air Force (115th) and Wake Forest (104th). As a result, Navy's pass defense numbers (3rd nationally, 141.4 ypg) seem really good. But in looking at Navy’s last game against Wake, even sub-par passing units can have success against the Midshipmen. The Demon Deacons threw for 326 yards and completed 37-of-53 passes. SMU meanwhile ranks 27th with 265.5 ypg.

On the flip side, this is a very difficult spot for SMU, who enters off a big win over Tulsa and plays a critical game against Houston next week. It is unlikely that the Mustangs Read more

CFB Handicapping Breakdown: UAB desperate for a victory

UTEP at UAB -2.5 O/U 61

UAB head coach Neil Callaway stated the obvious earlier this week when he said this week's game against UTEP was one the Blazers "desperately needed to win". Saturday's contest is part of a month-long swatch for the UAB that features only one home game. UTEP comes in winners of four straight but one could argue no team in the country has had it easier: New Mexico State, Memphis, New Mexico and Rice. The foursome are currently a combined 3-20 with New Mexico State picking up one of those victories against New Mexico. UAB has shown signs of ability with a one-point win over Troy and overtime loss to Tennessee. The Blazers have also played some high scoring affairs against the C-USA West Division under Callaway. Prior to a 28-7 Week 2 loss to SMU, UAB vs. the West has yielded games scores of 71, 68, 68, 65, 65, 67, 59, 57 and 68.

Marshall hopes home field provides better results

UCF -5 at Marshall O/U 43.5

Marshall is looking to establish the run in tonight's game against UCF. The Golden Knights are 32nd nationally (117 ypg) against the run. The Thundering Herd have had a very strong home/road dichotomy over the last three years when it comes to offensive and defensive production.

UCF cancels classes; Students may have a few beers

10.06.2010     09:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A college education can be a wonderful thing but let's be honest, going to class can be a major drag. Students at UCF won't feel guilty about skipping class today because the school has canceled all afternoon classes in preparation for tonight's game against UAB. A logical move considering six hours to hammer beers is much more appealing that say two hours. Unfortunately, not everyone is onboard with the decision, and as expected, the complaints didn't come from the student body. And for the dude who said "it's not really for beer", get some friends man.

"It makes you wonder if our purpose here as a university is to educate students, or is our purpose to run a minor-league football team?" finance professor Jim Gilkeson said in a telephone interview.

"It's not really just for beer," another student said. "It's Read more

UCF plays it conservative with frosh quarterback

10.05.2010     09:18 AM     Printer Friendly
UAB at UCF -12 O/U 49.5

UCF is attempting to make life easy on rookie quarterback Jeff Godfrey. Since Godfrey took over in Week 3 at Buffalo, the Golden Knights have run the ball 67 percent of the time. The team is even moving offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe from the coaches' box to the field in order to better communicate with Godfrey. We expect continued focus on the run game on Wednesday against UAB. The Blazers recorded five sacks two weeks ago against Tennessee and have committed to a very blitz-heavy scheme this year. UCF ranks 18th nationally with 43 rushing attempts per game.

Saturday, 5 pm PT

Tulsa head coach Todd Graham said his defense is getting better on the heels of a second straight win. The Hurricane allowed a season-low 207 yards in Saturday’s 48-7 win at Memphis after holding Central Arkansas to 313 yards the week prior. Graham was asked during Monday’s weekly media conference if the young unit had turned the corner. “I don’t know if it’s turned the corner,” he said. “I know it’s gotten a whole bunch better. Any time you can hold somebody to around 200 yards of total offense, that’s pretty impressive.”

I’m just not buying the fact that Tulsa has anything close to a good defense. Let’s keep in mind who their opponents were the last two games. One was Memphis, which cannot decide on a starting quarterback and is 110th in the nation on total offense. The other game was against a FCS opponent in Central Arkansas. The two Read more
