College Football Betting Alert: Houston-Tulane total gets smashed OVER

11.10.2011     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Houston -7 at Tulane O/U 77

Geesh. What do you do with this one? Tonight's bet-the-over-because-it's-Conference-USA just got a little more tricky with the total steamed up from an opener of 73.5 (Pinnacle opened 71) to its current number of 77. Though even with the move, how much of an effort do you need from Tulane with Houston reeling off scores of 56, 73, 63, 56 and 49 in conference play? Maybe the Cougars figured out some mathematical algorithm that shows if they beat the remainder of their opponents by an average of 53 ppg, they’ll slip into the BCS title game.

And talk about a pointspread adjustment. In Week 2, Houston was a 20.5-point road favorite at North Texas (won 48-23). Tulane is really bad, but not too far removed from that of the Mean Green. Line history below from CRIS.

Southern Miss -8.5 at East Carolina O/U 58
Recommendation: Southern Miss

We cashed a pair of Fairway Football Forecasts on these pages last week including a steamroller on the Texas Longhorns as they crushed Kansas 43-0. In that analysis, we discussed the projected rushing advantage for the Longhorns as they used their recently discovered run-based offense to produce the most dominating point of attack performance of the season. The Longhorns rushed for 441 yards while Kansas finished with -2 yards rushing! Total yards favored Texas 590 to just 46 for the Jayhawks, who managed just three first downs. Saturday we release our 20* College Football Game of the Year in which we have a team expected to dominate the point of attack. Along with positive motivation facing a troubled team, we expect a solid victory. Join Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: SMU QB McDermott banged up but will play vs. Tulane

11.02.2011     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Tulane at SMU -25.5 O/U 52.5

SMU quarterback J.J. McDermott is expected to play Saturday against Tulane despite a chipped bone in his foot. McDermott has also been dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder. Injuries may be playing a part in McDermott's decline over the last two games. The senior has thrown zero touchdowns and six interceptions as the Mustangs produced only 10 combined points in losses to Southern Miss and Tulane. If McDermott continues to fail, SMU will have to go the route of Stephen Kaiser, who has yet to take a snap this season. Former starter Kyle Padron is still dealing with back injuries and won't be available until next week. Once bettors caught wind that McDermott would play, SMU went from -22.5 to -25.5 over the woeful Green Wave.

College Football Handicapping: Change in philosophy yields positive results for UTEP

Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Their offense may not be as lopsided as one of the Service Academies or Georgia Tech’s, but there’s been a dramatic philosophy change in El Paso, Texas. Although still operating out of a spread formation with four wideouts most of the time, UTEP has firmly committed to running the football over the past three games. Senior running back Joe Banyard began the newly found production source against Houston back on October 1st when he led the Miners with 240 yards rushing on 22 attempts (10.9 ypc) in the near upset. Following their bye week, fellow senior running backs Vernon Frazier and Leilyon Myers joined in as the trio combine for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries (7.1 ypc) against Tulane. And this past Saturday, Frazier led the way with 167 yards on just seven carries (23.9 ypc), one of which was an 83-yard touchdown scamper. There are a multitude of teams across the country that find it difficult to run out of the “spread” and for UTEP to change its ways so drastically in the middle of the season and show such potent results is a credit to the players and coaching staff. Granted, the schedule has featured below average run defenses and the test Read more

College Football Free Betting Pick: East Carolina Pirates at Navy Midshipmen

-East Carolina at Navy -11.5 O/U 64.5
Recommendation: Navy

Last year, East Carolina was thoroughly annihilated by Navy, 76-35.  The Midshipmen ran for 8.5 yards per attempt, gaining well over 500 yards on the ground.  The Pirates defense only forced one punt on 14 Navy possessions while giving up ten touchdowns.

The rematch comes on Saturday, and East Carolina doesn’t appear to be ready to stop the Navy triple option any better than it did last year.  In 2010, this matchup came mid-season for the Pirates in a major sandwich spot – coming off two C-USA games, with three more on deck.  This year’s game is in a similar spot.  Defending Navy’s option requires a series defensive makeover.  East Carolina hasn’t faced an option team yet and they won’t face another one.  That makes this something of a throwaway game for the road underdog.

While this looks like a real flat spot for East Carolina, it’s an absolute must win game for a Navy team that has lost four straight Read more

College Football Free Odds Pick: Central Florida Knights at SMU Mustangs

Central Florida +3.5 at SMU O/U 46.5
Recommendation: Central Florida

The betting markets have soured on Central Florida following their third consecutive ATS loss last week. This after the money poured in on George O’Leary’s squad in each of the previous three games. Against Florida International, heavy UCF money drove the line from -4.5 to -7. At BYU, UCF money drove the line from +3.5 down to +1. And last week, against Marshall, more of the same as the line went from -14.5 to -20.  Central Florida lost two of those games outright, and never sniffed a spread cover in last week’s 16-6 win over Marshall.

That gives us the ideal elements in play to support the Golden Knights as they travel to SMU on Saturday. Instead of laying points, we’re taking points. Instead of being a hot wise guy team, taking big money every week, the Knights are now officially on the ‘wise guy’ fade list. That folks is the definition of Read more

East Carolina -14 at Memphis O/U 56
Recommendation: East Carolina

The Pirates and head coach Ruffin McNeill were flat-out embarrassed last week in a 56-3 loss at Houston. There are really no excuses for the loss however they're neither the first nor the last team to hear sirens in their sleep after a trip to Robertson Stadium. As I see it, the loss should serve as strong motivation for this week's contest and reports have the Pirates focused at practice.  The seniors on this team have been a part of three straight bowl appearances and are unlikely to quit on the season. In fact, they still feel like they can be a strong contender to reach the C-USA championship game. East Carolina has played a real tough schedule as well with North Carolina, Virginia Tech and South Carolina all having superior talent, and undefeated Houston currently in the top 25.  Obviously this match-up against Memphis will serve as an opportunity to get their hurry-up offense going Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Marshall's schedule softens defensively

10.10.2011     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Rice at Marshall -4.5

Good article on how Marshall's schedule is about to take a complete 180-degree turn. Through the first six games of the season, the Thundering Herd (5-1 ATS) never played a team not currently ranked 39th or better in total defense. With the meat of the C-USA slate upcoming, that is about to change in a big way. The best stop unit Marshall will face based on the current numbers is Houston (71st) who by no means should be considered even mediocre.

While Marshall's offense (271.7 ypg, 115th) is not as explosive as a majority of the league, expect an increase in production upcoming. Also note that the Herd's own defense is much better than a most of its upcoming foes.

Marshall's First Six Opponents (Total Defense Ranking)
Central Florida - 2nd
Virginia Tech - 13th
Louisville - 16th
West Virginia - 19th
Ohio - 25th

NCAAF Handicapping Preview: Navy in a tough spot against Southern Miss

Southern Miss +1 at Navy O/U 58

You don’t see many letdowns from Service Academies, but after back-to-back late losses, including last week’s deflating 35-34 OT loss to Air Force, Navy may surrender in this tough match-up and emotional spot. Adding to the Midshipmen’s misfortune is their track record after battling Air Force (0-6 ATS). Also, overtime losers as home favorites the next time out are a poor proposition if they had scoring success the previous game. Southern Mississippi has won three straight and has the better offense and defense. They rank 11th in the nation against the run (82 ypg, 2.4 ypr ) and should be able to slow Navy’s option attack (352 rushing ypg). But Navy will be without leading rusher Alexander Teich for this game (disciplinary), while the Golden Eagles feature a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates at Houston Cougars

East Carolina at Houston -11.5 O/U 73.5
Recommendation: Houston

East Carolina has been one of the biggest disappointments of the year offensively. With quarterback Dominique Davis, who threw for 37 touchdown passes and 3,967 yards a year ago, and five other starters back, the Pirates should be matching their 36.8 ppg from 2010. However, that has not been the case, as the Pirates have been careless with the ball and the production simply hasn’t been there. East Carolina has a whopping 17 turnovers in just four games, and has scored just 95 points in its 1-3 start. This week they travel to Houston to face one of the best offenses in the nation, led by quarterback Case Keenum. The Cougars have scored at least 35 points in all five of their games and have eclipsed 700 yards in each of their last two games. Houston's defense has some leaks, but they have also been forcing turnovers, with 11 takeaways on the year. East Carolina has allowed at least 42 points in Read more
