College Football Free Odds Pick: Central Florida Knights at SMU Mustangs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Central Florida +3.5 at SMU O/U 46.5
Recommendation: Central Florida

The betting markets have soured on Central Florida following their third consecutive ATS loss last week. This after the money poured in on George O’Leary’s squad in each of the previous three games. Against Florida International, heavy UCF money drove the line from -4.5 to -7. At BYU, UCF money drove the line from +3.5 down to +1. And last week, against Marshall, more of the same as the line went from -14.5 to -20.  Central Florida lost two of those games outright, and never sniffed a spread cover in last week’s 16-6 win over Marshall.

That gives us the ideal elements in play to support the Golden Knights as they travel to SMU on Saturday. Instead of laying points, we’re taking points. Instead of being a hot wise guy team, taking big money every week, the Knights are now officially on the ‘wise guy’ fade list. That folks is the definition of Read more

NCAAF Handicapper Free Play: East Carolina Pirates at Memphis Tigers

East Carolina -14 at Memphis O/U 56
Recommendation: East Carolina

The Pirates and head coach Ruffin McNeill were flat-out embarrassed last week in a 56-3 loss at Houston. There are really no excuses for the loss however they're neither the first nor the last team to hear sirens in their sleep after a trip to Robertson Stadium. As I see it, the loss should serve as strong motivation for this week's contest and reports have the Pirates focused at practice.  The seniors on this team have been a part of three straight bowl appearances and are unlikely to quit on the season. In fact, they still feel like they can be a strong contender to reach the C-USA championship game. East Carolina has played a real tough schedule as well with North Carolina, Virginia Tech and South Carolina all having superior talent, and undefeated Houston currently in the top 25.  Obviously this match-up against Memphis will serve as an opportunity to get their hurry-up offense going Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Marshall's schedule softens defensively

Rice at Marshall -4.5

Good article on how Marshall's schedule is about to take a complete 180-degree turn. Through the first six games of the season, the Thundering Herd (5-1 ATS) never played a team not currently ranked 39th or better in total defense. With the meat of the C-USA slate upcoming, that is about to change in a big way. The best stop unit Marshall will face based on the current numbers is Houston (71st) who by no means should be considered even mediocre.

While Marshall's offense (271.7 ypg, 115th) is not as explosive as a majority of the league, expect an increase in production upcoming. Also note that the Herd's own defense is much better than a most of its upcoming foes.

Marshall's First Six Opponents (Total Defense Ranking)
Central Florida - 2nd
Virginia Tech - 13th
Louisville - 16th
West Virginia - 19th
Ohio - 25th

NCAAF Handicapping Preview: Navy in a tough spot against Southern Miss

Southern Miss +1 at Navy O/U 58

You don’t see many letdowns from Service Academies, but after back-to-back late losses, including last week’s deflating 35-34 OT loss to Air Force, Navy may surrender in this tough match-up and emotional spot. Adding to the Midshipmen’s misfortune is their track record after battling Air Force (0-6 ATS). Also, overtime losers as home favorites the next time out are a poor proposition if they had scoring success the previous game. Southern Mississippi has won three straight and has the better offense and defense. They rank 11th in the nation against the run (82 ypg, 2.4 ypr ) and should be able to slow Navy’s option attack (352 rushing ypg). But Navy will be without leading rusher Alexander Teich for this game (disciplinary), while the Golden Eagles feature a Read more

East Carolina at Houston -11.5 O/U 73.5
Recommendation: Houston

East Carolina has been one of the biggest disappointments of the year offensively. With quarterback Dominique Davis, who threw for 37 touchdown passes and 3,967 yards a year ago, and five other starters back, the Pirates should be matching their 36.8 ppg from 2010. However, that has not been the case, as the Pirates have been careless with the ball and the production simply hasn’t been there. East Carolina has a whopping 17 turnovers in just four games, and has scored just 95 points in its 1-3 start. This week they travel to Houston to face one of the best offenses in the nation, led by quarterback Case Keenum. The Cougars have scored at least 35 points in all five of their games and have eclipsed 700 yards in each of their last two games. Houston's defense has some leaks, but they have also been forcing turnovers, with 11 takeaways on the year. East Carolina has allowed at least 42 points in Read more

NCAAF Handicapping News: Bettors continue to pound Central Florida

Marshall at Central Florida -19 O/U 43

After losing two straight losses to Florida International and BYU, Central Florida enjoyed an extra week of preparation before playing host to Marshall this Saturday. Interesting line move in this one as Marshall, off a road win over Louisville, opened as a 14.5-point underdog but now finds itself as high as +19.5. The Thundering Herd were +21.5 in a Week 1, rain-shortened game, at at West Virginia (34-13 final).

UCF head coach George O'Leary doesn't have much of a track record off of a bye: 3-10 SU at UCF and 12-17 SU overall. But his Knights have responded after a SU loss with a record of 7-1 ATS the last three seasons.

College Football Gambling: Southern Miss defense vs. Navy offense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Miss at Navy -2.5 O/U 58

The number are good (81.6 ypg allowed) but we'll see if Southern Miss' rush defense is the real deal when it travels to face Navy on Saturday. Utilizing first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch's new 4-2-5 scheme, the stop unit appears to be much improved over last year. According to head coach Larry Fedora, the team is well prepared for the Midshipmen’s triple option attack though Disch countered by saying that the 4-2-5 was built more to stop the spread.

"Fortunately for us, we started preparing for it back in the spring and then some during (preseason) camp," said USM coach Larry Fedora. "We have spent some time on it. Hopefully with that, and the days we actually have to prepare this week, our defense will be ready."

"You can't do what

NCAA Free Wagering Pick: Rice Owls at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Rice at Southern Miss -14 O/U 59.5
Recommendation: Over

Southern Miss is a very surprising 0-4 O/U this season. Larry Fedora's team of course is known for its hurry-up offense and putting points on the board. USM’s eight conference games in 2010 averaged a whopping 80 points per game. That was with only three returning starters on the offensive side of the ball while this year, they welcomed back seven including experienced quarterback Austin Davis. Part of the reason for trending towards the under is that the Golden Eagles played against two true freshman quarterbacks in their first two games (Marshall and Louisiana Tech). And the Tech game was played in hurricane-type weather which helped limit the scoring. Look for the scoring pace of USM’s games to quickly progress like last season. Meanwhile, the Rice Owls are also known for their quick tempo style. Their eight conference games last season averaged 76 ppg and they too have faced two teams finding Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: After brutal start, things get easier for Tulsa

North Texas at Tulsa -23 O/U 59.5

Few in the country have played a tougher September than Tulsa with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. To make matters worse, the Golden Hurricane have had a litany of issues to deal with: former teammate passed away, star wide receiver arrested, new coaching staff, academic casualties and a banged up starting quarterback. Tulsa comes limping into this weekend's game against North Texas with a chance to right the ship. With the exception of an early November trip to UCF, they could be favored in every game the rest of the way.

"We've faced tons and tons of adversity," TU running back Trey Watts said. "We just have to come out and play football.

"If you would have listed all those things months ago, no one would have believed it would have

College Football Pointspread News: Houston big favorites at UTEP

Houston -16.5 at UTEP O/U 66

Some good news and notes on tonight's Houston-UTEP matchup. The Cougars have had their troubles as road favorites under head coach Kevin Sumlin with a 3-11 ATS record since 2008. They needed a monster come-from-behind effort in a 35-34 non-spread covering road win over Louisiana Tech. Against North Texas, they cashed a -20.5 ticket, thought it wasn't by much (48-23). Note that the Cougs outgained the Mean Green by a whopping 400 yards.

Even with a limited amount of returning starters (11) and injuries at the quarterback and offensive line positions, UTEP has to be pleased with its 2-2 start. Houston will score plenty of points but the defense needs a stop or two if they want to cover this line.

“I remember crowd screaming ‘Overrated,’” Carrier said. “It felt real bad, especially knowing how hard we
