College Football ATS Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Boise State Broncos

09.22.2011     12:52 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

Tulsa at Boise State (5 pm PT, CBSC)
CRIS Opening Line: Boise State -32.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current Line: Boise State -28 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Boise State -22.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Boise State -27.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: I don't normally get involved with games lined at four touchdowns but I'm very intrigued by the line move in this weekend's Boise State-Tulsa game. Despite no official word, the market move towards the Golden Hurricane hints that quarterback GJ Kinne will indeed play – although I’ve read the team has been practicing as if he won’t. If I’m Tulsa, why even risk it with a full season of C-USA still left to be played? But the closer I looked at this game, the clearer it became that Kinne or no Kinne, Tulsa is going to be severely outclassed…again. Just look as Read more

Kinne's status still up in the air; Bettors make strong move against Boise

09.21.2011     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Still no official news on Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne. As per yesterday's post, some sources have him day-to-day while others say he'll be out 2-4 weeks. Perhaps there are some “in the know” as we see a rare line move against Boise State at home with the Broncos bet down from -32.5 to as low as -28.

Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship at Monday's press conference: "There's nothing much more than what we knew before. He is going to be day-to-day and I'm not just saying that. He was much better yesterday than he was on early Sunday morning when he left the field. It is my understanding that he will have an MRI done to just confirm what we expect the diagnosis to be and he has not had that done yet."

NCAAF Betting Notes: Southern Miss defense looks much improved

Southern Miss at Virginia -3.5 O/U 53

Seeing some positives out of Southern Miss' defense through three weeks. The stop unit had actually declined each of Larry Fedora's first three seasons but the switch to a 4-2-5 alignment has led to just 302 ypg allowed. They haven't played the most potent of offenses with Marshall, SE Louisiana and Louisiana Tech – though Tech just hung 34 on Houston. This week's trip to Virginia should tell us more as the Cavaliers are averaging 441.3 ypg.

"We're doing some good things out there, getting guys in the right spots and they're making plays," said first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch. "We got the turnovers and got Read more

Tulsa at Boise State -32.5 O/U 62.5

No official word on Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne's status for Saturday's game at Boise State. Reports say that Kinne suffered a Grade II MLC tear against Oklahoma State which according one local Tulsa doctor can take 2-4 weeks to heal. Head coach Bill Blankenship continues mum on the issue, going so far as to say the Kinne is "day to day". If Kinnie is unable to go, which looks to be the case, the Golden Hurricane will go with redshirt freshman Kalen Henderson.

NCAAF Pointspread Preview: Central Florida Knights at BYU Cougars

09.20.2011     10:23 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

Central Florida at BYU (Friday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opening Line: BYU -3.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current Line: BYU -2.5 O/U 43

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: BYU’s stock to a huge hit following last week’s blowout loss to rival Utah. The Cougars were outscored 40-0 in the second half and as a result, we are seeing what appears to be a heavily discounted price on Saturday’s matchup. Central Florida is a good team with athletes and speed, but traveling cross country to a tough environment where an outright win will likely be needed to cover the spread won’t be easy. Had BYU won or at least been competitive against Utah, I think we’d be seeing a -6 or even a full -7 on this game. But the reality Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: BYU says all the right things following blowout loss

09.19.2011     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With just under three minutes left in the first half of last week's Holy War, Utah put together a six play, 68-yard touchdown drive to take a 14-10 lead over BYU. That was the last time the game was even remotely competitive as the Utes erupted for 40 second half points and rolled to a 54-10 win. The Cougars finished with 11 rushing yards and seven turnovers and must now turn around and play a Friday night home tilt against UCF. BYU ranks 118th in rushing (48.3 ypg) while the Knights are 13th in stopping the run (72.3 ypg allowed). UCF is off some disappointment of its own after losing 17-10 at Florida International. BYU opened as a 3.5-point favorite but were quickly bet down to -3.

“If the guys aren’t motivated to get this bad taste out of their mouth, then I don’t know what is going to motivate anybody,” Heaps said. “You know, a loss like this, especially Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Louisiana Tech braces for Houston offense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -6.5 at Louisiana Tech O/U 70.5

Some good news and notes for this weekend's Houston-Louisiana Tech matchup in Ruston. Tech head coach Sonny Dykes seemed somewhat pleased with his offense's performance in last week's 48-42 overtime win over Central Arkansas. He noted however that they'll need to be in better form in order to match the inevitable onslaught of touchdowns from Houston. Dykes also talked about finding ways to rest the defense without disrupting the rhythm of the offense. Perhaps more concerning is LT's defense which surrendered 445 Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: SMU Mustangs could be short key o-lineman

09.08.2011     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
UTEP at SMU -18.5 O/U 54.5

Under-the-radar injury for SMU with center Black McJunkin (ankle) not expected to start this weekend against UTEP. Reports indicate that he was in a walking boot for much of the week. In the loss to A&M, the Mustangs were able to run the football with McJunkin on the field but when he went down there was an obvious decline in production.

"He's better today,'' Jones said. "We'll see. We were shooting for Friday that he would be able to go through walk-throughs and hopefully be available for the game. He probably won't start. But if something happens, he'll be available.''

College Football ATS Preview: SMU Mustangs at Texas A&M Aggies

09.04.2011     09:26 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_cfb_game_previews_11.jpg

SMU at Texas A&M (4:30 pm PT – FSN)
CRIS Opener:
Texas A&M -15.5 O/U 53.5
CRIS Current: Texas A&M -15.5 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Texas A&M -13.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Texas A&M -15.5

Betting Take: From a betting perspective, there is a lot to like about both teams. Texas A&M has steadily progressed in all facets of the game during head coach Mike Sherman’s first three seasons. The betting markets have noticed as the Aggies are the second choice on many futures’ boards to win the Big XII behind Oklahoma. But with success and expectations comes the potential for inflated lines. The Mustangs have also enjoyed year-to-year improvement under Read more

NCAAF Betting Stock Watch: SMU Mustangs poised for big things this season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the SMU Mustangs – It’s been a long, long road for the SMU football program but after back-to-back bowl berths, fourth-year head coach June Jones has his team ready for new heights in 2011. The Mustangs boast their deepest and most talented team under Jones’ watch with as many as returning 18 starters. They also have made it clear they want to atone for last year’s dismal finish including a loss to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl as a touchdown favorite. The storyline for last season was turnovers with a dismal -12 mark. It wasn’t so much the offense as it was the defense who forced only 15. I look for them to be a bit more fortunate in the turnover margin department this season. SMU’s offensive line, dubbed the “Goon Sqaud”, returns the most starts (158) of any program in the country. That is obviously good news for the experienced junior quarterback Kyle Padron. Padron has Read more
