NCAA Free Wagering Pick: Rice Owls at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Submitted by ER Sports blog entry.
Rice at Southern Miss -14 O/U 59.5
Recommendation: Over

Southern Miss is a very surprising 0-4 O/U this season. Larry Fedora's team of course is known for its hurry-up offense and putting points on the board. USM’s eight conference games in 2010 averaged a whopping 80 points per game. That was with only three returning starters on the offensive side of the ball while this year, they welcomed back seven including experienced quarterback Austin Davis. Part of the reason for trending towards the under is that the Golden Eagles played against two true freshman quarterbacks in their first two games (Marshall and Louisiana Tech). And the Tech game was played in hurricane-type weather which helped limit the scoring. Look for the scoring pace of USM’s games to quickly progress like last season. Meanwhile, the Rice Owls are also known for their quick tempo style. Their eight conference games last season averaged 76 ppg and they too have faced two teams finding Read more

NCAAF Betting Notes: After brutal start, things get easier for Tulsa

North Texas at Tulsa -23 O/U 59.5

Few in the country have played a tougher September than Tulsa with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. To make matters worse, the Golden Hurricane have had a litany of issues to deal with: former teammate passed away, star wide receiver arrested, new coaching staff, academic casualties and a banged up starting quarterback. Tulsa comes limping into this weekend's game against North Texas with a chance to right the ship. With the exception of an early November trip to UCF, they could be favored in every game the rest of the way.

"We've faced tons and tons of adversity," TU running back Trey Watts said. "We just have to come out and play football.

"If you would have listed all those things months ago, no one would have believed it would have

College Football Pointspread News: Houston big favorites at UTEP

09.29.2011     01:27 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Houston -16.5 at UTEP O/U 66

Some good news and notes on tonight's Houston-UTEP matchup. The Cougars have had their troubles as road favorites under head coach Kevin Sumlin with a 3-11 ATS record since 2008. They needed a monster come-from-behind effort in a 35-34 non-spread covering road win over Louisiana Tech. Against North Texas, they cashed a -20.5 ticket, thought it wasn't by much (48-23). Note that the Cougs outgained the Mean Green by a whopping 400 yards.

Even with a limited amount of returning starters (11) and injuries at the quarterback and offensive line positions, UTEP has to be pleased with its 2-2 start. Houston will score plenty of points but the defense needs a stop or two if they want to cover this line.

“I remember crowd screaming ‘Overrated,’” Carrier said. “It felt real bad, especially knowing how hard we

College Football Gambling Preview: Southern Miss at Virginia

09.24.2011     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Southern Miss at Virginia -3 O/U 52
Recommendation: Virginia

Virginia has lost its first two games against FBS foes against the spread, creating legitimate value as they take on Southern Miss.  This is not some throwaway non-conference tilt for Mike London’s squad.  Rather, it’s the start of a crucial four game home stand that’s going to determine whether Virginia is going to end its four-year bowl drought this December.

Cornerback Dom Joseph, one of 21 seniors on this ballclub who have never gone bowling: “This is definitely a pivotal time in the season. If we just run the table, we'll be sitting real pretty. That's definitely something we're looking forward to (doing), but taking it one game at a time”

Cornerback Chase Minnifield, talking about the transition from the Al Groh era to the Mike London era: “It's just a different vibe on the team. There's better people on the staff Read more

College Football ATS Notes: East Carolina favored by two touchdowns over UAB

UAB at East Carolina -14.5 O/U 62.5

Two C-USA teams searching for their first win of the season as UAB travels to East Carolina. The Pirates showed well for stretches during their two spread covering losses to South Carolina and Virginia Tech. The Blazers meanwhile looked awful in both of their defeats; 39-0 at Florida and 49-10 vs. Tulane. Quarterback Bryan Ellis hurt his leg in last week's game but is expected to play. In last year's meeting, UAB held a 42-34 lead with nine minutes to go only to allow three straight ECU touchdowns in a 54-42 loss. Despite two horrific performances from UAB, backing ECU and its sub-par defense – yes, they showed well against the Hokies and are off of a bye week – at over two touchdowns can get tricky. NCAAF Handicapper Preview: Central Florida Knights at BYU Cougars

Central Florida at BYU (5 pm PT - ESPN)
CRIS Opener: BYU -3.5 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: BYU -2 O/U 43.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: BYU -3.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: BYU -2

Fairway Jay’s Betting Take: Both teams are off disappointing losses as favorites last week, but BYU was ambushed by rival Utah, 54-10. The Cougars are licking their wounds and have little offensive punch. Expect the struggles to continue against a strong UCF stop unit that sports the best pass defense in the nation. The Knights held Florida International to just 238 yards last week but came up short due to a fumble returned for a touchdown and a muffed punt. UCF outgained their first three foes and held them each to season-lows in offensive production. Head coach George O'Leary is 13-3 ATS on the road and 8-2 ATS as an underdog. They also boast a balanced Read more

College Football ATS Preview: Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Boise State Broncos

Tulsa at Boise State (5 pm PT, CBSC)
CRIS Opening Line: Boise State -32.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current Line: Boise State -28 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Boise State -22.5
Teddy Covers Power Rating: Boise State -27.5

Andrew Lange’s Betting Take: I don't normally get involved with games lined at four touchdowns but I'm very intrigued by the line move in this weekend's Boise State-Tulsa game. Despite no official word, the market move towards the Golden Hurricane hints that quarterback GJ Kinne will indeed play – although I’ve read the team has been practicing as if he won’t. If I’m Tulsa, why even risk it with a full season of C-USA still left to be played? But the closer I looked at this game, the clearer it became that Kinne or no Kinne, Tulsa is going to be severely outclassed…again. Just look as Read more

Kinne's status still up in the air; Bettors make strong move against Boise

09.21.2011     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly

Still no official news on Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne. As per yesterday's post, some sources have him day-to-day while others say he'll be out 2-4 weeks. Perhaps there are some “in the know” as we see a rare line move against Boise State at home with the Broncos bet down from -32.5 to as low as -28.

Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship at Monday's press conference: "There's nothing much more than what we knew before. He is going to be day-to-day and I'm not just saying that. He was much better yesterday than he was on early Sunday morning when he left the field. It is my understanding that he will have an MRI done to just confirm what we expect the diagnosis to be and he has not had that done yet."

College Football Betting Notes: Tulsa's Kinne unlikely to play at Boise State

NCAAF Betting Notes: Southern Miss defense looks much improved

09.21.2011     08:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Southern Miss at Virginia -3.5 O/U 53

Seeing some positives out of Southern Miss' defense through three weeks. The stop unit had actually declined each of Larry Fedora's first three seasons but the switch to a 4-2-5 alignment has led to just 302 ypg allowed. They haven't played the most potent of offenses with Marshall, SE Louisiana and Louisiana Tech – though Tech just hung 34 on Houston. This week's trip to Virginia should tell us more as the Cavaliers are averaging 441.3 ypg.

"We're doing some good things out there, getting guys in the right spots and they're making plays," said first-year defensive coordinator Dan Disch. "We got the turnovers and got

College Football Betting Notes: Tulsa's Kinne unlikely to play at Boise State

Tulsa at Boise State -32.5 O/U 62.5

No official word on Tulsa quarterback GJ Kinne's status for Saturday's game at Boise State. Reports say that Kinne suffered a Grade II MLC tear against Oklahoma State which according one local Tulsa doctor can take 2-4 weeks to heal. Head coach Bill Blankenship continues mum on the issue, going so far as to say the Kinne is "day to day". If Kinnie is unable to go, which looks to be the case, the Golden Hurricane will go with redshirt freshman Kalen Henderson.

"(After 2-4 weeks),
