NBA Gambling: Stern says Silver is right for seeking legalized betting

02.10.2015     01:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Now we have former NBA commissioner David Stern on board with Adam Silver's push for legalized sports betting.

"I agree with Commissioner Silver that it's time," Stern said at the 14th annual Cal Ramsey Distinguished Lecturer Series in Sports Management at New York University. "Especially in the day and age of fantasy [sports], daily fantasy [leagues]. ... It's still a game of skill and has its own set of issues with algorithms and bet large sums, but it's time."

"Because fans don't walk out of the Garden saying, 'Oh my God, it's too bad the Knicks won but they didn't cover [the betting line],'" Stern said. "But now there is so much written, done, daily fantasy [leagues], etc."

NBA Handicapping: After shoring up offense, Pistons take step back defensively

02.09.2015     02:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Detroit's recent defensive woes. The Pistons have taken on a number of identities this season. In November, when they couldn't win a game to save their lives, they were primarily a low scoring "under" team. They around mid-December, they decided to pick up the pace and open up the offense. But with that came a decline defensively, particularly of late.

"We've been trying to save their energy, but we didn't use any last night anyway, so we saved it last night, so we should have been able to go today," Van Gundy said after a short practice today. "We needed to get back into some better habits."

"Now over the last 10 games, we're 28th defensively, we're still seventh offensively so we lose (Brandon Jennings to Achilles injury), play 10 games without him, you stay seventh in offensive efficiency, that's pretty good, you should be winning more games, but our defense has dropped off the charts," Van Gundy said. "We got to try to get it back, we haven't had enough practice time.

NBA Handicapping: Bettors curious how Orlando will play under interim head coach

02.06.2015     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Orlando Magic fired head coach Jacque Vaughn and a majority of his staff earlier this week. Lead assistant James Borrego was appointed interim head coach. Bettors are left wondering what type of style the Magic will play under Borrego’s watch. About a month ago, Vaughn decided he wanted his team to pick up the tempo. They scored back-to-back high scoring wins over Chicago and Houston but it was fool's gold as the team's defense went from bad to worse and Vaughn was eventually shown the door. It did however result in a sweet two-week stretch of seven straight overs. GM Rob Hennigan said the Magic need to get back to playing more defensive minded basketball which hints things could slow down some. We'll get a better idea tonight as Orlando plays host to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We went into the season wanting to see some progress," Hennigan said. "We wanted to see growth, and we just didn't feel like we were seeing the type of growth that we wanted to see. So that led us to this point. I would say

NBA Handicapping: Dallas travels to Sacramento in back-to-back spot

02.05.2015     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tough spot for Dallas tonight with its game against Sacramento marking the seventh in 10 days and third back-to-back. Last night, the Mavs blew a 21-point lead at Golden State in a 128-114 loss. Monta Ellis and Chandler Parsons both played 38 minutes.

"You think about fatigue from top to bottom, not just for your best guys. But we’ll see where we are tomorrow and go from there.’’

NBA Handicapping: Charlotte Hornets doing it with defense

02.04.2015     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a dismal start to the campaign, the Charlotte Hornets have climbed back into the Eastern Conference playoff hunt thanks to a recommitment on the defensive end. They've held their last 15 opponents to less than 40% shooting while eight of their last nine games have gone under the total. The Hornets play host to Washington on Thursday.

“That’s got to be our identity,” Henderson said. “We’re an improving offensive team, but to stay in games, particularly on the road, we have to play some defense.”

“We’re more dedicated. We got back to where we were last year. (We) realized that’s our only chance to be a great team,” Jefferson said. “We’ve got to lock in and play together at both ends.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Looking for NBA teams to bet on

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror, and MLB season is still two months away.  That means we’re In the heart of basketball season right now.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report I’ll take a look at a handful of NBA teams that offer legitimate bet-on potential as we approach the All-Star break.

The Cleveland Cavaliers spent the first half of the campaign disappointing their backers every bit as much as their fans.  In fact, the Cavs ranked among the very worst NBA teams against the spread, with a dismal 13-26 ATS mark in their first 39 games.  LeBron James was ailing, Kevin Love looked lost, key low post presence Anderson Varejao went out for the season with an Achilles tear and first year head coach David Blatt was under constant scrutiny, on the hotseat less than half the way through his first campaign.

The return to health of LeBron and a couple of trades have turned things around completely in Cleveland.  The Cavs have gone 10-0 SU, 9-0-1 ATS in their last ten ballgames; orchestrating a complete turnaround on the defensive end of the floor with former Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov anchoring the low Read more

NBA Handicapping: Chicago Bulls' defensive struggles return

01.30.2015     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not a week removed from experiencing a short termed defensive renaissance, the Chicago Bulls' struggles have returned. Last night, they allowed 47% shooting and 18 offensive rebounds in a 123-118 OT loss to the Lakers. Tough spot tonight as Chicago travels to Phoenix in a back-to-back spot. The Suns have won 15 of 21 and rank 7th in the NBA in offensive efficiency.

"We're not guarding anybody right now," Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler said. "That's what you think when you think Chicago -- is how great we are on defense. We haven't been that team, maybe three, four, five, six times this year tops. We can score the ball, so sometimes we outscore teams, but we haven't been playing any defense lately."

NBA Betting: Atlanta Hawks continue historic ATS run

01.23.2015     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As sports bettors, we see impressive ATS runs all of the time. A team will rip off 10 straight, oddsmakers and the market will adjust, and life will go back to normal. The Atlanta Hawks aren't normal. In fact, it may be a decade before we witness another run on this magnitude. The numbers are startling: 30-3 SU since November 21 and 19-1 ATS since December 15. Despite playing in the Eastern Conference, the schedule has some potential pitfalls upcoming with games against Oklahoma City, Portland, Washington, Golden State, Memphis, and Dallas over the next month. Bettors have certainly bought in with the Hawks opening -3.5 and bet up to -4.5 for tonight's home tilt vs. the Thunder.
