NBA Gambling News: Gasol out, Howard questionable as Lakers face Celtics

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Lakers at Boston -2.5 O/U 196

Injuries galore for tonight's Lakers-Celtics matchup in Boston. Kobe Bryant has been dealing with an elbow injury which is like correlated to his recent barrage of assists – though with Howard out, Kobe's been forced to shoot more and the results haven't been great (21-57, .368 FGs last 3 games). Dwight Howard (shoulder) remains in a perpetual state of being questionable despite Kobe urging him to suck it up and play. And Pau Gasol is out with a foot injury. Meanwhile, Boston's Rajon Rondo is out for the season but the Celtics have won and covered five straight in his absence.

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota hopes to avoid another slow start vs. San Antonio

San Antonio -4.5 at Minnesota O/U 198.5

Minnesota's Rick Adelman called out his team for their poor start against Portland on Monday. The Trail Blazers jumped out to a 25-18 lead after the first quarter and held a 49-38 advantage at half. The Timberwolves fought back and hung 40 in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as Portland came out on top 100-98. Minnesota has lost 12 of 14 (3-10-1 ATS) heading into tonight’s ESPN matchup against San Antonio.

"If we are just going through the motions, which it seemed like we were doing, it's just not going to happen," Adelman said. "We have to look at the personnel and look at why aren't we doing it."

"We are not good enough right now to come out and think we can just ease into a game," Adelman said. "I hope it's a lesson learned. We have to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Are the Houston Rockets Hijacking the KRIB Index?!

Earlier this season, we devoted a lot of space to the amazing run the New York Knicks had in terms of trey/giveaway differential. They were doing something that’s never been done before. Heck, they were doing something that wasn’t even imaginable…with more treys than giveaways more than 30 games into the season. No other team this year made it past one! (KRIB stood for Knicks Re-Invent Basketball)

The Houston Rockets have had a couple of recent eye-popping results that featured the same principles. Twitter poster @monuwwarah sent me a friendly note saying “Houston been readin’ ‘bout KRIB.” I decided to go back through Houston’s recent hot streak to see whether this was something that had become a regular feature for their offense.

Tuesday vs. Golden State: 23 treys, 8 turnovers

Wow…+15 in the combination! You’ve probably heard that Houston tied the all-time record tonight for made treys in a game with those 23. Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Howard, World Peace expected to be out vs. Nets

LA Lakers at Brooklyn -4 O/U 197.5

Looks like no Dwight Howard (shoulder) or Metta World Peace (suspension) for the Lakers tonight as they travel to Brooklyn. The Nets were -2.5 earlier today but the line has since climbed to -4/-4.5. The total has also moved from 195 to 197.5.

“I’m not in any rush,” Howard said after sitting out of the team’s morning shootaround at New York Athletic Club. “I don’t want to reinjure it. I want to make sure it heals up.” [...]

“It’s my career,” Howard said. “There’s no need for me to prove anything to anyone.”

The latest reports indicate that Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant will play tonight against Dallas. Durant hurt his ribs in Saturday's loss at Cleveland. Durant hasn't missed a game since December of 2010. Also slated to play is Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki who missed two games with an abductor strain.

For most of the evening, the Los Angeles Lakers looked to be well on their way to winning their second game in two nights, further establishing that they were in warrior mode in their attempt to chase down the #8 seed in the Western Conference brackets.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Dwight Howard re-aggravated his labrum injury trying to score in traffic. He left the game with the Lakers leading 78-73. Phoenix would win the rest of the game 19-8, striking the Lakers playoff hopes with a lightning bolt in the process…

Hey Los Angeles Lakers…hey Portland Trailblazers…hey Dallas Mavericks…the Houston Rockets aren’t interested in taking a powder the rest of the NBA season and handing away their playoff spot to any of you guys!

In fact, the way the Rockets played tonight, the teams above them in the Western Conference playoff race will need to start looking in the rearview mirror. Particularly the team they beat, current #7 seed…the Utah Jazz.

NBA Handicapping: Markets indicate Golden State's Curry and Bogut may not play vs. Cleveland

Golden State at Cleveland -2 O/U 204

Big move towards the Cleveland Cavaliers who opened +1.5 vs. Golden State but now find themselves a 2-point home favorite. There are some indications Steph Curry (ankle), Harrison Barnes (calf), and Andrew Bogut (rest) may not play. It's a back-to-back situation for the Warriors who have tomorrow off before returning home to face Dallas.
