Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

01.13.2014     12:18 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more

Orlando +7.5 at Sacramento O/U 205.5
Recommendation: Orlando

I can certainly understand why the betting markets have installed the Magic as 7.5-point underdogs in their matchup at Sacramento tonight.  The Magic have the second worst record in the NBA; only Milwaukee’s is worse.  Orlando is 3-14 SU on the highway, and they’ve been blown out in each of the first two games of this grueling West Coast swing.

To make matters worse for Jacques Vaughn’s squad, they’re playing without their lone low post presence, center Nikola Vucevic; the only true center on the roster.  That leaves the likes of Big Baby Davis, Andrew Nicholson and Jason Maxiell to bang with DeMarcus Cousins in the paint; an undersized and under-talented trio.

But for all of those negatives, I have one thing to say: 0-10 ATS.  Sacramento has been favored ten previous times this year.  Their next pointspread cover in this role will be their first.  And just about every team the Kings have been favored against during this remarkable run has a similar story to that of Orlando; teams with flaws, Read more

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota's Love calls out teammates following loss

01.09.2014     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following last night's 104-103 loss to Phoenix, Minnesota's Kevin Love called out his teammates for being...well, not very good teammates. The loss dropped the T-Wolves to 17-18 SU and 19-16 ATS. According to ESPN, they've played the fifth-toughest schedule in the league but have still underachieved with an expected win-loss record of 24-11. Minnesota plays host to Charlotte on Friday and then is on the road for six of its next eight games.

"We can't have two guys sitting at the end of the bench that play good minutes just sitting there and not getting up during timeouts," Love said, referring to the poor body language exhibited by veterans J.J. Barea and Dante Cunningham in the fourth quarter. "We all need to be in this together. That kind of pisses me off. We're supposed to be a team."

NBA Gambling: Golden State goes for league record tonight vs. Brooklyn

Golden State -6 at Brooklyn O/U 198

Golden State is trying to become the first team in NBA history to sweep a road trip of seven or more games as it faces the Nets tonight in Brooklyn. The Warriors have won ten straight overall (7-3 ATS) including six in a row on the highway.

''It's this close so we're going to chase history,'' Jackson said. ''My guys have paid the price and I'm incredibly proud of them.''

NBA Handicapping: Short-handed Lakers travel to Houston in back-to-back spot

LA Lakers at Houston -14 O/U 213

The Lakers are an absolute mess with injuries piling up sky high. Already without the service of Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash this is a team that has also seen Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar, and Xavier Henry all succumb to injury as well. As if that wasn’t enough their current leading scorer, Nick Young, is dealing with back issues that have him listed as a game time decision this evening. Los Angeles had just an eight man rotation last night in Dallas as a result.

That, of course, makes matters for this evening’s game against Houston quite difficult. If Young is unable to go the Lakers will have virtually no cover for their starting guards while Pau Gasol, who logged 36 minutes last night, has only Duke rookie Ryan Kelly or Jordan Hill to give him any breathers. Perhaps Chris Kaman will make a rare appearance? How much can we really expect out of any Laker front liner tonight against Dwight Howard though? The last time these teams met Gasol Read more

NBA Gambling News: Sacramento holds players-only meeting

01.06.2014     01:19 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Our favorite NBA team is back in the news as Sacramento reportedly held a player-only meeting following Saturday's 113-103 home loss to Charlotte. After picking up wins over Miami and Houston and a pointspread cover against San Antonio, the Kings lost back-to-back home games as chalk to Philadelphia and the Bobcats. Sacramento is now 1-7 SU/ATS as favorites this season. The Kings open up a three-game home stand tomorrow against Portland. Following that is a brutal six-game, nine-day road trip (1/14-1/22) against Indiana, Minnesota, Memphis, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, and Houston.

“We’re a team full of excuses,” Cousins said following the Kings’ loss.  “Guys on pitty parties. Guys wanting you to feel sorry for them.  We’ve got nothing we can complain about.  Our job is to play hard, and we won’t even go out and do that.”

Atlanta at Brooklyn -2.5 O/U 197
Recomendation: Brooklyn

I like Brooklyn’s confidence level right now as that three-point buzzer beater by Joe Johnson against Oklahoma City last week seems to have picked this squad up. The two point guard starting lineup is no longer after the 95-78 debacle against Chicago and it has led to a 3-2 mark both straight up and against the spread with the only losses coming away from home to powers Indiana and San Antonio. The change was implemented to create more ball movement on offense but the results haven’t shown any real scoring improvement as the Nets have put up 95 points or less in four of the games. In fact, nothing has shown to be improved except for the team’s confidence level which may be the most important factor of all. The Hawks may not be as confident right now having dropped three of five since losing starting Al Horford for the season but they’ve been ultra-competitive. Five of the last seven Atlanta games have been decided by two points or less with three going into OT. These teams have different strengths and in this matchup, I feel the Nets are better suited to negate the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneymakers!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA regular season is less than two weeks away from the mid-way point of the campaign. But with the focus on football, the betting markets (and my own writing) have paid scant attention to the pro hoops ranks.  That ends here.

This week I’m going to focus on the good NBA teams; the moneymakers!  I’ll break down some of the best money earners in NBA thusfar and assess their profit making potential moving forward.  And I’ll take a look at a pair of ‘morphers’; teams that are playing significantly better than current market projections.

The Phoenix Suns are at the top of any moneymaker list; a classic example of how preseason expectations can affect ATS results for months, even when those expectations were clearly not right from Day 1 of the season!

Phoenix was lined in the range of 20 wins coming into the season.  The markets expected a major tank from first year, first time head coach Jeff Hornacek’s squad, angling for ping pong balls in the NBA lottery, not for a playoff spot.  But that clearly wasn’t the case, right from the get-go – they blew out Portland on Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Boston Celtics at Oklahoma City Thunder

Boston at Oklahoma City -9 O/U 194.5
Recommendation: Under

Oklahoma City is off an especially draining 115-111 victory at Minnesota last night which likely creates a less energetic effort here. They needed a 38-24 fourth quarter which saw Kevin Durant go into complete takeover mode scoring 23 points including four crucial ones in the final minute. Oklahoma City was focused on snapping its three-game losing streak at Minnesota and exerted itself accordingly so again, the gas tank should be a bit emptier in this back-to-back spot. Boston had yesterday off which leaves them fresher for this game as they look to erase some horrendous shooting the past couple of games. A ridiculously poor -14.6% FG shooting differential (Celtics hit 34.8%, Hornets 49.4%) Friday night against New Orleans didn’t prevent the Celtics form covering the +3.5 point closing number. Head coach Brad Stevens stated some frustration with Boston’s three losses of three points or less in their last seven games but as indicated by Friday’s box score, they are playing with heart. Boston’s road defense over 15 games shows them allowing only 95.7 points per game and Read more

NBA Handicapping: Denver Nuggets desperate to clean up mess

01.03.2014     12:22 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Losers of eight straight, the Denver Nuggets recently resorted to one-on-one "therapy sessions" in order to get things figured out/turned around. Head coach Brian Shaw met with players individually and then as a team an allowed everyone to "state their grievances." It was also announced that Andre Miller was suspended for two games following some sort of spat with Shaw over playing time. The Nuggets play four of their next five at home starting tonight with Memphis.

"However long it needs to take to try to flush everything out and figure out what's going on with our team, we decided to take that time," Shaw said Thursday.

"That's on me," Shaw said. "I've got to keep on seeking and searching, try to find ways to motivate our team to play harder. We can coach a lot of other things, but I still have to continue to try to find the guys who want to get out there and play hard, and I'm doing a poor job at that."
