NBA Handicapping: Another game, another lackluster effort by the Sacramento Kings

01.14.2016     08:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
You gotta love the Sacramento Kings. In the postgame presser following last night's 109-97 loss to New Orleans -- the Kings were laying as high as -8.6 before closing -6.5 -- the phrase "effort" was used like 40 times. When DeMarcus Cousins is calling you out for not playing hard you know it was a gold old fashion tank job. The Kings will have a chance for redemption with tonight's road tilt at Utah. Bettors have already hit the total down from 202 to as low as 200.

"Not giving multiple efforts, not playing out defensive schemes – effort. Effort." (When asked if it's a lead my example thing that he can set and get guys to follow) "I can take the blame; I did a poor job of not speaking up in the beginning. I can take the blame for that – I should've spoken up in the beginning, and I didn't."

"I honestly can't tell you. Effort – that's all it is, effort." (On how frustrating it is when they've talked so much about not having letdowns like this) "It's been our problem all year. We're all talk right

NBA Handicapping: LA Clippers winning games and covering numbers without Griffin

01.13.2016     09:18 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Interesting article on why the Los Angeles Clippers are performing better without the services of Blake Griffin who has been out with an injured quad. Sans Griffin, the Clippers are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS. They also went a respectable 9-6 SU/ATS when he missed time last season with an elbow injury. From a betting perspective, logic points us towards extra value with the markets perhaps overestimating Griffin's true worth. Then there's the "step up" mentality of having your star player out and needing to perform at a higher level to offset the loss. As pointed out in the article, LA's success without Griffin was also likely aided by the fact that that multiple opponents were without the services of key players. In the meantime, Griffin remains out and DeAndre Jordan is questionable with the flu for tonight's game against Miami. The Heat though may be without Hassan Whiteside who is questionable with a bum knee.

NBA Gambling News: Brooklyn Nets can head coach Lionel Hollins

01.11.2016     08:56 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Brooklyn Nets have reportedly fired head coach Lionel Hollins and "reassigned" GM Billy King. Assistant Tony Brown will serve as interim head coach. The Nets' one redeeming quality this season has been its ability to be really bad but not totally inept as their straight record sits 10-27 but also a very respectable 20-17 against the spread. They're currently +14.5 home underdogs to San Antonio tonight.

"It's clear from our current state of affairs that we need new leadership," owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement. "With the right basketball management and coach in place, we are going to create a winning culture and identity and give Brooklyn a team that it can be proud of and enjoy watching."

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Miami Heat at Phoenix Suns

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Miami -5 at Phoenix O/U 196.5
Recommendation: Miami

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Phoenix Suns these days.  My power ratings have seen the Suns steadily dropping for the better part of the last month, from mediocre to bad to bottom feeder.  Here in the second week of January, I’ve got the Suns priced in the same range as Philadelphia and LA – clearly the two weakest teams in the NBA – below the likes of other weaklings like Denver, Minnesota and Brooklyn.

The chemistry problems in Phoenix have been on full display for weeks.  Head coach Jeff Hornacek saved his job only by dumping several of his top assistants.  Quote after quote coming out of the Suns locker room speaks of a team that doesn’t like each other very much and isn’t in position to turn things around anytime soon.

The Suns snapped a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 111-102 win over Charlotte. On the heels of two truly dismal showings – allowing 83 second half points in a blowout loss to the Kings, followed by scoring only 22 points in the first half of a blowout loss to the Read more

NBA Gambling: Denver Nuggets continue to regress defensively

01.06.2016     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Poor Michael Malone. He leaves one dumpster fire and is immediately thrown into another. The Denver Nuggets have lost nine of their last 10 to drop to 12-23 overall (15-18-2 ATS). Not surprising, Malone is none too pleased with his team's defensive effort. The schedule has been brutal with five of their last seven on the road including games against Golden State, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Cleveland. Tonight perhaps offers a better opportunity as Minnesota ranks 25th in the league in offensive efficiency.

“We had no energy, no effort. Very flat,” a frustrated Malone said after the game. “As a coach, I can’t coach effort. That’s one thing I can’t do. We didn’t defend. We’re just a bad team right now.”

“There are too many breakdowns in our defense. I have to do a better job of game planning and helping our guys out because what we’re doing right now isn’t working. They’ve beaten us handily two times now without their best

NBA Betting Update: Suns' situation goes from bad to indescribably horrific

01.04.2016     09:02 AM     Printer Friendly

Oh, man. The 76ers, Kings, Bulls...they got NOTHING on the Phoenix Suns. This is one hell of a dumpster fire and no one seems to be wanting to use a fire extinguisher. They've lost nine straight including a 142-119 loss to Sacramento and last night's 97-77 loss to the Lakers. Maybe 9 of their next 11 against the Eastern Conference will help. Or maybe not considering Indiana (twice), Boston, Atlanta, Miami, and Cleveland are all well above .500. Next up is a home tilt vs. Charlotte on Wednesday.

“When Ls keep getting piled on top of you, it’s like more weight on your back,” Price said. “We need a win to get that weight off of our back.”
