NBA Handicapping: Indiana Pacers will play starters vs. Miami Heat

04.11.2014     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rested and ready the Indiana Pacers head to Miami looking to secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference. According to reports, Indiana will play all of its starters. The Pacers have a half game lead over the Heat with three games remaining. Miami has four games left. No line as of this morning as oddsmakers wait to confirm who will play for both sides.

"There was a lot of energy at practice, they definitely had their legs," Vogel said. "The decision [to rest the starters] was every bit as much about the bench guys as the starters. Hopefully that took care of the bench, and the fresher legs will help the starters."

NBA Handicapping: Indiana Pacers somehow back in lead of Eastern Conference

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Just when looked like Indiana was waving the white flag (i.e. sitting starters) in its quest for the Eastern Conference's top seed, they went ahead and beat Milwaukee 104-102 and regained the East lead by a half game over the Miami Heat who have lost three of four. The two teams meet in South Beach on Friday.

We have to point out that while the results (-1 closing number) say the Pacers covered vs. the Bucks, keep in mind that game opened -3.5, went to -5, dropped to -2 and only an hour before game time did the line drop to -1.5/-1. In their last 23 games, the Pacers really have only one legitimate pointspread cover (91-79 as 6.5-point favorites vs. Chicago). The other two were last night’s miraculous victory and an OT win as 5-point chalk vs. Detroit.

“We accomplished the purpose,” said George, who spent the game in warm-ups after getting in some conditioning and shooting. “We felt very comfortable with the group we had, that they were going to go out there and get us a win. It wasn’t like we were sacrificing the game. Read more

NBA Gambling Alert: Indiana Pacers sit starters vs. Milwaukee

Indiana -2 at Milwaukee O/U 183

Always an adventure betting late regular season NBA. The Indiana Pacers opened -3.5 for tonight's game at Milwaukee. Earlier today they were bet up to -5. Then news broke that head coach Frank Vogel was going to sit his starters. They'll instead go with Donald Sloan, Evan Turner, Rasual Butler, Ian Mahinmi, and Luis Scola. That drove the line from -5 to -2.

NBA Handicapping: Does Indiana's late season slump lessen it postseason chances?

Interesting article on the Indiana Pacers and whether or not "peaking" impacts a team's ability to make a postseason run.

The Pacers are minus-5.6 in their last 20 games in point differential, which has consistently proven to be a good predictor of postseason success. Only one team in the past ten years has even made the playoffs with a point differential of minus-5 or worse in their final 20 games: the 2011 Atlanta Hawks who finished 7-13 in their last 20 with a minus-5.9 point differential.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: The Indiana Pacers' historic ATS slide

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Indiana Pacers have been a remarkable pointspread story this year, worthy of a Wiseguy Report to examine in detail what has happened and why.  To be thorough, this story starts last year when the Pacers flexed their collective muscles, developing into a title contender for the first time in a decade.

Indiana was good, not great, in the 2012-13 regular season.  They won 49 games, tied for the third best record in the (much) weaker of the two conferences.  Here’s an excerpt of what I wrote about the Pacers heading into the playoffs last year:

“A month ago, I would have listed the Pacers as Miami’s toughest Eastern Conference potential test.  Indiana’s defensive numbers rank among the best in the NBA, and low post behemoth Roy Hibbert is a very tough matchup for the Heat in the paint.  Indiana beat Miami twice during the regular season, and the Pacers were the last team to give the Heat real trouble in the playoffs last year, taking a 2-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference semi’s before the Heat closed out the series with three straight wins.

But the Pacers have not Read more

NBA Handicapping: All of sudden, Pacers not concerned about top seed

04.03.2014     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For today's What a Crock of You-Know-What news we have the Indiana Pacers claiming the top seed in the Eastern Conference is no longer a top priority. This after last night's slump-busting, non-covering win over Detroit. The Miami Heat are ahead of the Pacers via win percentage and have eight games remaining whereas Indiana has only six. The two teams meet in Miami next Friday.

“We can’t focus on it,” West said of the top spot. “We worked ourselves [to the point where] we’ve gotten out of sorts trying to focus on that and we haven’t played good enough basketball over the last month or so to claim it. So now it’s up for grabs and we’re behind the eight-ball in terms of that. We just have to play ball, man. Either way we’re going to have to win some tough playoff series. We’ll have to win some games on the road whether it’s early in the series or late. That’s just what it is.”

NBA Handicapping: Indiana Pacers are melting down fast

04.01.2014     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After scoring a much-needed, back-on-track win over the Miami Heat, the Indiana Pacers have seemingly regressed even more. Not only have they dropped three straight but they failed to top 80 points in all three games. Following last Friday's 91-78 loss to Washington, Roy Hibbert called out his team for being selfish. His words fell on deaf ears as the Pacers netted just 76 in a loss to Washington and were blown out on their home floor against San Antonio, 103-77. Indiana now finds itself tied with Miami for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers play host to Detroit on Wednesday.

“Some selfish dudes in here,” Roy Hibbert muttered Friday night, after getting eight shots in the Pacers’ loss to the Wizards. “Some selfish dudes. I’m tired of talking about it. We’ve been talking about it for a month.”

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards trying to avoid seventh or eighth seed

Indiana -2.5 at Washington O/U 188.5

Baring a complete collapse, the Washington Wizards (36-35) are headed the postseason. But of late, they've struggled to step up in class and are only a 1.5 games ahead of Charlotte for the much-need sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. They face another challenge tonight with Indiana coming to town. Following that, the schedule lightens considerably with Atlanta, Charlotte (twice), Boston, New York, Chicago, Orlando, and Milwaukee.

“It feels good to be in this position, knowing that we’re more than likely going to be a playoff team. But at the same time, we can’t get too complacent with that, because we’re not there yet,” Bradley Beal said. “I mean, anything can happen. We could probably — knock on Read more

NBA Gambling: Indiana Pacers play host to Miami Heat

Miami at Indiana

The Indiana Pacers have seen their lead in the Eastern Conference playoff standings dwindle to just two games over the Miami Heat. They've lost seven of their last 12 (2-10 ATS) though eight of those 12 contests were on the highway.

"We look like sh—," West told The Star. "We're just not performing. We're just not playing well. We're not shooting the ball well. We're not sharing it and when we're not sharing it, we become stagnant."

"We just haven't been having fun," Pacers All-Star Paul George said after Tuesday's practice. "Somewhere along the line, we just forgot how much fun this game is and forgot how much fun we made it. More than that, how much fun we made this arena."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Late season NBA betting opportunities

03.24.2014     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While the betting markets focus on post-season college basketball tournaments and the upcoming baseball season, the long and winding NBA campaign still offers plenty of wagering opportunities down the homestretch.

There are still three and a half weeks left in the regular season.  Most squads have between 12 and 14 games remaining.  And very quietly, underneath the radar, we’ve seen a handful of late season morphers; teams playing well above or well below their full season power rating numbers.  Those are the teams I’m looking to focus on in this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, particularly in the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers have lost 24 games in a row as I write this very early on Monday morning.  This is no surprise – the Sixers have been openly tanking since last summer, playing for ping-pong balls, not victories.  And for the better part of the first four months of the campaign, the sportsbooks couldn’t hang a line high enough to get bettors to support this completely anonymous, sorry squad.

Philly hasn’t gotten any better in recent weeks.  Read more
