NBA Betting Recap: Tired Lakers Outscored 33-3 on Fast Breaks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

This is why back-to-backs in Denver are worth more than one point in the line! The Los Angeles Lakers were truly behind the eight-ball Monday night, trying to hang with rested Denver at altitude one day after winning a nailbiter in Dallas.

Let’s run the numbers then talk some more about the Lakers…

Denver 119, LA Lakers 108

2-Point Percentage: Lakers 61%, Denver 63%

3-Point Shooting: Lakers 8/19, Denver 5/18

Free Throws: Lakers 14/31, Denver 16/27

1’s and 2’s: Lakers 84, Denver 104

Rebounds: Lakers 36, Denver 44

Turnovers: Lakers 15, Denver 8

The Lakers did shoot well inside the arc because Denver was inviting a fast pace. They didn’t mind trading baskets if it meant the Lakers were going to run out of gas. You see “out of gas” flashing all over that boxscore:

*Just 14 of 31 on free throws for the Lakers…which was 9 of 11 from Kobe Bryant Read more

The Los Angeles Lakers earned a critical road win in Dallas Sunday afternoon. It moved them within one game of the .500 mark at 28-29, and only 2.5 games out of the #8 seed in the Western Conference playoff brackets behind Houston.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that a road game awaits Monday in a back-to-back in Denver…one of the toughest challenges any NBA team can face because of the quality of the Nuggets and the mile-high altitude.

There’s a chance the Lakers could gut out a win there. But, let’s assume for now that it’s a loss. And, let’s assume also that a road game a week from Tuesday at Oklahoma City is going to be a loss…along with a neutral site game later this year against the LA Clippers given the advantages the Clippers are currently showing in various quality assessments.

There are 25 games left in the season as I write this…with three “behind the eight-ball” losses in Denver, OKC, Read more

Portland at LA Lakers -9 O/U 202.5

Despite being three games below .500, Kobe Bryant seems to feel the Lakers are a lock to make the postseason. They are currently 3.5 games behind Houston for the eighth spot in the Western Conference. According to John Hollinger's numbers, the Lakers have a 32.7% chance of reaching the postseason. One sportsbook had the Lakers -150 to miss the playoffs.

"It's not a question of if we make the playoffs. We will," Bryant told Sports Illustrated. "And when we get there, I have no fear of anyone — Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Denver … whoever. I have zero nervousness about that."

Recommendation: Over

Usually when two rivals face off they are familiar with one another’s style and roster. As a result, these types of games have a tendency to go under the total. But in this particular matchup I see plenty of reasons to look the other way.

It's NBA All-Star week and we have seen some teams throw in the towel when they are down, but a lot of those squads were bottom feeder teams like Charlotte and Orlando. Also during All-Star week we've noticed that defenses tend to be lackadaisical and less physical – none of the top players want to get injured before the festivities and Sunday’s All-Star game. So tonight we don't envision anyone on the Lakers trying to block a Blake Griffin slam dunk or commit a flagrant foul when Kobe Bryant drives the lane.

Each time the Clippers and Lakers meet they are playing on their home court at the Staples Center. Tonight the Lakers are the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Rockets roll over Golden State again, Lakers limp past Suns

Both the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers won late Tuesday night, keeping Showtime 3.5 games out of the final spot in the playoffs.

Houston (+4) beat Golden State 116-107

LA Lakers (-9.5) beat Phoenix 91-85

Houston was impressive in what could have been a trouble spot as a road underdog. The Lakers didn’t have much sizzle in overcoming a fourth quarter deficit to beat the worst team in the West.

I’ll run the game numbers in a moment. First, let’s update the standings in the lower half of the West. I’ll also include the home/road splits so far, because that might matter in a race this tight.

Updated Bracket Bwester Standings (top 8 spots reach playoffs)

6…Golden State 30-22 (23 home, 29 road)

7…Utah 29-24 (26 home, 27 road)

8…Houston 29-25 (26 home, 28 road)

9…Portland 25-27 (25 home, 27 road)

NBA Gambling News: Gasol out, Howard questionable as Lakers face Celtics

LA Lakers at Boston -2.5 O/U 196

Injuries galore for tonight's Lakers-Celtics matchup in Boston. Kobe Bryant has been dealing with an elbow injury which is like correlated to his recent barrage of assists – though with Howard out, Kobe's been forced to shoot more and the results haven't been great (21-57, .368 FGs last 3 games). Dwight Howard (shoulder) remains in a perpetual state of being questionable despite Kobe urging him to suck it up and play. And Pau Gasol is out with a foot injury. Meanwhile, Boston's Rajon Rondo is out for the season but the Celtics have won and covered five straight in his absence.

LA Lakers at Brooklyn -4 O/U 197.5

Looks like no Dwight Howard (shoulder) or Metta World Peace (suspension) for the Lakers tonight as they travel to Brooklyn. The Nets were -2.5 earlier today but the line has since climbed to -4/-4.5. The total has also moved from 195 to 197.5.

“I’m not in any rush,” Howard said after sitting out of the team’s morning shootaround at New York Athletic Club. “I don’t want to reinjure it. I want to make sure it heals up.” [...]

“It’s my career,” Howard said. “There’s no need for me to prove anything to anyone.”

For most of the evening, the Los Angeles Lakers looked to be well on their way to winning their second game in two nights, further establishing that they were in warrior mode in their attempt to chase down the #8 seed in the Western Conference brackets.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Dwight Howard re-aggravated his labrum injury trying to score in traffic. He left the game with the Lakers leading 78-73. Phoenix would win the rest of the game 19-8, striking the Lakers playoff hopes with a lightning bolt in the process…

2-Point Percentage: Lakers 49%, Phoenix 49%

3-Point Shooting: Lakers 8/27, Phoenix 3/12

Through Game One of ABC’s Sunday doubleheader today, you got the sense that the Boston Celtics season…and maybe an era…was coming to an end.  In Game Two, the first meaningful evidence that the season had finally begun for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Numbers and notes from those games, plus other important developments on a busy NBA Sunday…

Boston 100, Miami 98 (in double overtime)

2-Point Percentage: Miami 45%, Boston 46%

3-Point Shooting: Miami 5/23, Boston 5/20

Free Throws: Miami 15/20, Boston 23/27

Rebounds: Miami 53, Boston 46

Turnovers: Miami 20, Boston 14

Dramatic game to watch, though the cloud hanging over the event made it one that few could really enjoy. Boston won the day. But they also found out they’ll be without star point guard Rajon Rondo for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. They had been in recent trouble anyway with their current roster, slumping down to Read more
