NBA Handicapping: Bettors continue to sweat as Philadelphia 76ers remain stuck on 15 wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Because they are in the Eastern Conference one would think at 15 wins, the Philadelphia 76ers are going to top their season over/under wins mark of 16/16.5. For bettors holding over or under tickets, it has to be absolutely excruciating. They play the Knicks, Pistons, Bobcats and Celtics at home as well as a few road winnable road games. Pointspread wise you obviously won't see them laying any chalk and based on recent lines against Orlando and Milwaukee, +5 or +6, depending on the spot, is about as low as oddsmakers are likely to go.

"If we don't play better transition defense and don't share the ball, then we have some problems, that is a fact," Brown said. "Because I think there is wins in that locker room if we get back in transition and we just have a chance to guard and we play together."

NBA Gambling: Oklahoma City laying nearly three touchdowns vs. Philadelphia

With "tank mode" in full effect for a lot of teams, it was only a matter of time before we saw our first 20-point spread of the season. For tonight, Oklahoma City opened -20 vs. Philadelphia and was bet up to -20.5. Not much history to go from in terms of this pointspread range. The Celtics were laying -22.5 vs. the Heat back in 2007 (Boston won 88-62). Overall since 2005, 20-point or more favorites are 4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS.

NBA Handicapping: Betting markets continue to attack Philadelphia 76ers totals

Orlando -3 at Philadelphia O/U 215

For the better part of the season, bettors have been playing the Philadelphia 76ers over the total. The results have cooled considerably over the last two months with only 7 of the team's last 20 games (1 push) going over. However, since the All-Star break and following a few trades, Philly's results/horrific defense suggest that there are more overs on the horizon. In three games, the 76ers have allowed 114, 124, and 130. There doesn't seem to be much agreement between oddsmakers and the betting markets on how these games are being lined. Of Philadelphia's last four games the total has moved 3.5, 4.5, 4, and 3 points from CRIS's opening to closing numbers.

NBA Gambling Alert: Milwaukee Bucks priced as road chalk

Milwaukee -2 at Philadelphia O/U 209.5

Rarified air for the Milwaukee Bucks tonight as betting market steam has them currently priced as a road favorite for the first time this season. It's only the third time this year they've been "chalk." But on the surface it appears warranted as the Philadelphia 76ers have somehow gone from bad to worse. They haven't won a game this month and were blown out by bottom feeders Cleveland, Los Angeles, Boston, and Detroit but an average of 16.5 ppg.

Dallas -13.5 at Philadelphia O/U 212

Huge move on both the side and total for tonight's Dallas-Philadelphia game. The Mavericks opened -9.5 with a total of 216. They've since been steamed up to -13.5 while the total – a rare occurrence for any game involving the 76ers – was bet down to 212. Yesterday, Philly unloaded Evan Turner, Lavoy Allen, and Spencer Hawes.

Cleveland -3.5 Philadelphia O/U 209.5

Arguably no team needed the All-Star break more than the Philadelphia 76ers. Over their last eight games, the Sixers allowed 115.4 ppg. According to head coach Brett Brown, team morale is high. Philly's schedule over the next few weeks is rather favorable with five straight at home and eight of their next 10 vs. sub-.500 teams.

"I think they're great," Brown said. "They had a heck of a practice today. They have surprised me in that regard throughout the course of the year. They bring, most times, 'A' effort to our practices. Most times they handle it just like pros should handle it. Their spirits are good, despite our record."

"When you see them like this, you realize just how unrested they were when I left them," Brown said. "When we had lost some games as we did, and you

NBA Gambling Update: Philadelphia 76ers crushed again

02.11.2014     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

It didn't hit -55 but for the second straight game, bettors witnessed some crazy in-game lines involving the Philadelphia 76ers. Last night they were waxed once again by the Golden State Warriors 123-80. The peak in-game price at Pinnacle was Golden State -44.5. And despite allowing 123 in back-to-back games, both went way under the total due to Philly's offensive shortcomings. The 76ers close out their West Coast trip on Wednesday in Utah before the All-Star break. We did check to see if there were and recent in-game lines of this magnitude and found Oklahoma City -48.5 during their 114-69 rout of Charlotte last season.

NBA Handicapping: Style, coach continue to hamper Philadelphia 76ers

01.31.2014     08:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It has been a mess of a season for the Philadelphia 76ers. They're young, don't have much talent, and play for a coach who is insistent on playing at a breakneck pace. Head coach Brett Brown has talked all season about playing better defense but he gives the 76ers little to no chance to succeed considering that amount of possessions that are played. Philly's current pace is 102.1 – if that holds, they'll be the first team to average above 100 for a season since the 2009-10 Golden State Warriors who finished 30 games under .500 (they did rack up an impressive 47-35 ATS record). Philly though has not had success against the spread (19-27 ATS) and 46 games into the season, Brown admitted that his style has essentially backfired. Note that Philadelphia's propensity for "overs" as cooled considerably with eight "unders" in its last 10 games. They're still coughing up 100+ on a routine basis but the team is clearly worn down and the offense has suffered (95.2 ppg last 10; 101.2 ppg seasonal).

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more
