NBA Handicapping: Style, coach continue to hamper Philadelphia 76ers

01.31.2014     08:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It has been a mess of a season for the Philadelphia 76ers. They're young, don't have much talent, and play for a coach who is insistent on playing at a breakneck pace. Head coach Brett Brown has talked all season about playing better defense but he gives the 76ers little to no chance to succeed considering that amount of possessions that are played. Philly's current pace is 102.1 – if that holds, they'll be the first team to average above 100 for a season since the 2009-10 Golden State Warriors who finished 30 games under .500 (they did rack up an impressive 47-35 ATS record). Philly though has not had success against the spread (19-27 ATS) and 46 games into the season, Brown admitted that his style has essentially backfired. Note that Philadelphia's propensity for "overs" as cooled considerably with eight "unders" in its last 10 games. They're still coughing up 100+ on a routine basis but the team is clearly worn down and the offense has suffered (95.2 ppg last 10; 101.2 ppg seasonal).

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more

NBA Handicapping: 76ers continue to play fast despite glaring deficiencies

12.03.2013     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're looking for a blueprint of how to trend over the total in the NBA, read this. The Philadelphia 76ers are 13-5 O/U, play at the fastest pace in the league (102.8), and rank 26th in defensive efficiency (104.4).

"When you choose to play at a pace that we're trying to play at, the problems can really start there," Brown said following practice yesterday at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We turn it over a lot, and they run at us. We take quick, bad shots and they run at us. A lot of our transition defensive problems are coming from turnovers and quick, bad shots, because we're so adamant on playing at a speed. Somewhere out there, down the road now, there needs to be a better understanding for how you responsibly play that style of play. Then, when you just get into basic halfcourt defense, it's a whole other story about accountability, define a team, all those things. And me doing a better job coaching some rotations. But our defense is most definitely a problem, and I think some of that spins Read more

NBA Handicapping: 76ers are the league's best OVER bet

11.27.2013     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Philadelphia 76ers have been the strongest "over" team in the NBA thus far at 11-4 O/U thanks to a quick pace, better than expected offensive efficiency, worse than expected defensive efficiency, and little to no bench. It’s not a profile first-year head coach Brett Brown is fond of with the team already making various roster moves as Brown seeks to build towards the future. Philly travels to Orlando tonight with a total of 208.5.

"That won't change," Hinkie said. "It doesn't mean there will be lots of changes. It just means our job is to keep looking. Keep looking all the time. Keep looking internally and keep looking externally.

"Keep comparing all the time, who can help move us forward."

NBA Handicapping: ESPN decides to show up at the Philadelphia 76ers' Tankfest

10.29.2013     02:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's not a good sign when prior to start of the regular season, ESPN has an article on its front page talking about your ridiculously low season over/under wins number and the likelihood of a total tank job.

"They've pretty much made it known in Philadelphia they're trying to get the No. 1 pick for Andrew Wiggins and not holding back," Sherman said. "Teams try for the draft pick sometimes late in the season, but they're basically doing it the whole season."

In Stat Evaluations, Be a Judge, Not a Lawyer

I’ve touched on this periodically over the years, often in throwaway comments when I’m whining about something I just saw or read. I was thinking it was time to go into the topic again because we have so many new readers thanks to twitter (@jefffogle) and word-of-mouth. Then, a PERFECT example jumped out at me in something I was reading at Grantland.

There’s an article up this weekend about the Philadelphia 76ers. Author Ben Detrick said this about the role new general manager Sam Hinkie might have played in the development of point guard Jrue Holiday:

“When Hinkie took the reins, some thought he could help transform Holiday into the Sixers’ version of James Harden. Both are big guards with lightning-quick first steps, equally capable Read more

NBA Handicapping: Chicago Bulls continue to struggle with consistency

Philadelphia at Chicago -7 O/U 179

It's been a struggle for the Chicago Bulls of late, losers of five of their last seven and now four games behind the Indiana Pacers in the Central Division race. Head coach Tom Thibodeau isn't using Derrick Rose's injury as an excuse. But an editorial from the Chicago Tribune points out that Rose's absence is only part of the problem.

"Every day you're faced with different things that can distract you if you allow it to," Thibodeau said. "So you have to guard against that constantly. Sometimes it's injuries, sometimes it's schedule, Taj (Gibson) out, Kirk (Hinrich) out, whatever it might be. A lot of games on the road, back Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: New Orleans Hornets at Philadelphia 76ers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans +3 at Philadelphia O/U 184
Recommendation: New Orleans

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions right now.  Forget New Orleans' 11-26 full season record – it’s meaningless.  The Hornets got star shooting guard Eric Gordon and #1 overall draft pick Anthony Davis back in the lineup and they’ve started to win.

First the Hornets knocked off Dallas in Dallas.  Then they beat the red hot Spurs, a team playing as well as any in the league through the first two and half months of the season.  They rallied from a double-digit deficit at the end of three quarters to knock off the Rockets, and rallied from another double digit deficit to beat Minnesota.  The key in all four games was defense and rebounding – New Orleans won the rebounding battle each time and held all three opponents to 92 points or less in regulation.

But New Orleans played poorly against the Knicks at Madison Square Read more
