Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spurs could be in trouble following Game 1 loss

04.20.2015     07:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The San Antonio Spurs opened their defense of their NBA Championship run from last year with a blowout loss on the road at the Staples Center in LA against the Clippers.  That Game 1 and the series against the Clips featured some EXTREMELY unusual betting action here in Las Vegas and offshore – money coming on one team (the Clippers) for Game 1 while coming on the other team (San Antonio) for the series.  I can’t recall any previous series in my 17 basketball seasons here in Las Vegas where the Game 1 favorite was not the favorite to win the series.  The betting action was a clear indicator of the respect bettors have for San Antonio heading into the 2015 postseason.

But following that Game 1 debacle, the Spurs aren’t favored to win the series anymore, with the adjusted series prices popping up following Game 1 showing LA as short chalk moving forward. The question bettors and pundits need to be asking is a simple one.  Was the Spurs Game 1 loss simply a bump in the road for this perennial championship contender or was it an "end of an era" indicator, telling us that the Spurs are "fade" material moving Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver +10 at Golden State O/U 216.5
Recommendation: Denver

The Nuggets aren’t laying down here in the final week of the season; still playing hard just about every night for interim head coach Melvin Hunt.   They’ve won by double-digits twice in their last four ballgames. In the third, they rallied back from 21 down at halftime before losing by a point in double overtime to the Mavs.  And in their most recent game, at LA against the surging Clippers, the Nuggets led from wire-to-wire until the Clips went nuts late, scoring 20 points in a three minute span late in the fourth quarter to steal the win (but not the cover).

Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried talking about how hard the team is playing for interim head coach Melvin Hunt: “I feel like we're back to the old Nuggets and it's exciting. I hope they hire him and I hope he's our head coach next year."  Hunt, talking about the importance of tonight’s game: “I want us when we get on that plane after playing Golden State, I want it to be as quiet as a library because they're so exhausted just from playing hard.  I want them to get Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Golden State -12.5 O/U 209
Recommendation: Golden State

The Phoenix Suns fought the good fight for most of the season.  But quite frankly, you can stick a fork into Jeff Hornacek’s squad right now, because they are done.  The injuries are piling up, with center Alex Lin and point guard Brandon Knight both expected to miss tonight’s game.  The losses are piling up as well, with the Suns now trailing current #8 seed OKC by four games in the Western Conference playoff standings; 2.5 games behind New Orleans.

The Suns have shown very little fight in recent losses.  The trend started last week with a home loss to lowly Sacramento; a wire-2-wire defeat.  They followed that up with a home loss to Portland.  Last Sunday, in a true circle the wagons game, Phoenix led OKC by 20 at home but ended up losing the game by double digits, completely outclassed in the fourth quarter.  The following night in Portland was every bit as bad; a game that was over well before the fourth quarter began.

The Suns upcoming schedule is truly brutal.  After tonight’s game they play Utah at Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Milwaukee Bucks at Indiana Pacers

Milwaukee at Indiana -7 O/U 187.5
Recommendation: Indiana

My power ratings have the Pacers clearly ranked as the third best team in the East right now, even before Paul George returns to the floor over the next few weeks.  No, Indiana isn’t better than the Cavs or Hawks but with the Raptors and Wizards both slumping while the Bulls battle serious injury woes, Indiana has quietly been putting together a HUGE run, both SU and ATS.

The Pacers are 12-2 SU, 11-3 ATS in their last 14 ballgames; a stretch that includes SU and ATS wins over the likes of the Cleveland (twice), Golden State, New Orleans, Chicago and Charlotte, among others.  Both losses during that span have come against elites – OKC and San Antonio – and that Spurs loss came on a last second buzzer beater in a game that the Pacers led by double digits in the fourth quarter.  Plain and simple – the Pacers are a bet-on squad right now.  Point guard George Hill: “We’re just playing basketball the right way now.”

The positive quotes just keep coming out of this locker room.   Coach Vogel: “I would say Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Betting against the Washington Wizards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I highlighted a pair of NBA teams that had all the makings of being strong bet-on squads over the final two months of the regular season.  Those two teams – the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder – combined to go 5-0 SU and 5-0 ATS in their first five games coming out of the All Star break.  I don’t think either one of those squads has even approached their peak yet, still offering tremendous bet-on potential moving forward.  In particular, OKC even without Durant in the lineup is capable of very big things, both SU and ATS.

This week I’m going to look at a single team on the other end of the spectrum – a dead nuts bet-against squad over the final two months of the campaign.  With sincere apologies to the Denver Nuggets, my #1 fade team in the NBA right now is the Washington Wizards.  While Denver is a lottery team that is being priced like a lottery team, Washington is still being priced as a strong playoff contender in the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA post All-Star bet-on teams

02.16.2015     10:28 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The All-Star game has come and gone, leaving us headed for the homestretch of the NBA campaign; the final eight weeks of action between the All Star Break and the start of the playoffs.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll be taking a hard look at two veteran teams – one from the East and one from the West – that have all the makings of being strong bet-on squads over the final two months of the regular season.

My #1 post All-Star break bet-on team from the East is the Indiana Pacers.  At 21-33 SU, Indiana can only be described as a disappointment thusfar;  a major drop for a team that earned the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last spring while making their second consecutive trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Many veteran teams that have suffered through major drop-offs aren’t particularly excited about putting together a late playoff run, only to be outclassed in their opening round matchup.  There’s a reason that a team like Brooklyn, for example, isn’t on this list.  But the Pacers are one veteran team that is capable of pulling off a series upset Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Looking for NBA teams to bet on

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror, and MLB season is still two months away.  That means we’re In the heart of basketball season right now.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report I’ll take a look at a handful of NBA teams that offer legitimate bet-on potential as we approach the All-Star break.

The Cleveland Cavaliers spent the first half of the campaign disappointing their backers every bit as much as their fans.  In fact, the Cavs ranked among the very worst NBA teams against the spread, with a dismal 13-26 ATS mark in their first 39 games.  LeBron James was ailing, Kevin Love looked lost, key low post presence Anderson Varejao went out for the season with an Achilles tear and first year head coach David Blatt was under constant scrutiny, on the hotseat less than half the way through his first campaign.

The return to health of LeBron and a couple of trades have turned things around completely in Cleveland.  The Cavs have gone 10-0 SU, 9-0-1 ATS in their last ten ballgames; orchestrating a complete turnaround on the defensive end of the floor with former Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov anchoring the low Read more
