NBA Handicapper Free Play: Golden State Warriors at San Antonio Spurs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Golden State +10 at San Antonio O/U 202
Recommendation: Golden State

The quotes coming out of the San Antonio locker room are very clear – the Spurs are much more interested in resting and getting healthy for the playoffs than they are with extending their 18 game winning streak.  As big home favorites tonight, that leaves San Antonio overpriced in the betting markets as they take on Golden State.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, in a candid moment with reporters earlier this week said that his team needed to get “slapped” to keep them grounded after all of these wins.  Point guard Tony Parker: “I think he'll be happy if we lose anytime soon. I'm pretty sure because he's going to rest like half of the team."  Hall of Famer Tim Duncan: “We'll worry about a couple of things, staying healthy, finishing the season strong and hopefully going into the playoffs with the confidence we're playing with Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Late season NBA betting opportunities Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You’ll be reading more than enough about the Final Four in the week to come.  You’ll be able to find my initial take on the two games in my ESPN.com piece, midweek.  So I’m going to focus on the NBA in this week’s Wiseguy Report, picking up right where I left off last week, when I broke down a handful of Eastern Conference morphers

It’s worth noting that since I wrote that article, blindly supporting the three bet-on teams that I mentioned (Cleveland, Philadelphia and Brooklyn) while fading my one ‘bet-against squad (Indiana) has produced a 10-5 ATS result.  Hopefully this edition, focusing on Western Conference morphers, will produce similar short term dividends.

The San Antonio Spurs success can’t be a surprise to any breathing human.  No team in the league has been more consistent over the past decade and a half, and San Antonio came one brutal overtime loss short of winning the NBA Championship last Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons

Cleveland +6 at Detroit O/U 205
Recommendation: Cleveland

The betting markets have soured on the Cleveland Cavaliers since leading scorer and assist man Kyrie Irving got hurt. The dead Cavs had just pulled off outright upset road wins as big underdogs at Golden State and Phoenix before the injury, but they lost by 22 on the night that Irving went down.

Since that blowout loss to the Clippers, the Cavs have been pointspread machines, reeling off five consecutive pointspread covers as they travel to Detroit tonight.  That stretch includes a pair of outright upsets against the Knicks and Raptors along with a trio of closer than expected losses against elites Houston, Oklahoma City and Miami.

One player’s injury is another player’s opportunity.  While the markets downgraded the Cavs after Irving got hurt, backup point guard Jarrett Jack stepped into the starters roll. And much as he did two years ago in New Orleans, or last year in Golden State, Jack Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Late season NBA betting opportunities

03.24.2014     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While the betting markets focus on post-season college basketball tournaments and the upcoming baseball season, the long and winding NBA campaign still offers plenty of wagering opportunities down the homestretch.

There are still three and a half weeks left in the regular season.  Most squads have between 12 and 14 games remaining.  And very quietly, underneath the radar, we’ve seen a handful of late season morphers; teams playing well above or well below their full season power rating numbers.  Those are the teams I’m looking to focus on in this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, particularly in the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers have lost 24 games in a row as I write this very early on Monday morning.  This is no surprise – the Sixers have been openly tanking since last summer, playing for ping-pong balls, not victories.  And for the better part of the first four months of the campaign, the sportsbooks couldn’t hang a line high enough to get bettors to support this completely anonymous, sorry squad.

Philly hasn’t gotten any better in recent weeks.  Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Charlotte Bobcats at Brooklyn Nets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charlotte +6 at Brooklyn O/U 194
Recommendation: Charlotte

My clients and I have been making money supporting Charlotte all year, and tonight’s game provides another rock solid opportunity to cash a winning bet with this ATS juggernaut.  After all, the Bobcats are currently ranked #3 in the NBA (behind Phoenix and Toronto) for profitability this year. And Charlotte is in excellent current form, winners of four of five and six of eight.  That stretch includes wins over fellow playoff contenders Indiana, Minnesota and Washington.

But Charlotte was a no-show at home against Atlanta on Monday Night, losing by 14 in their worst shooting performance in any game since November.  Steve Cliffford’s squad is 9-3 SU in their last dozen tries coming off a loss, including wins over likely playoff teams, like the Pacers, Wizards, Mavs, Warriors and Raptors in this role.  And Charlotte has been nothing short of outstanding as a short underdog; 8-0 ATS in Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Atlanta Hawks at Portland Trail Blazers

Atlanta at Portland -8.5 O/U 217
Recommendation: Over

Whatever limited defensive intensity Atlanta had when they were healthy in the low post has completely dissipated since Al Horford, Pero Antic and Gustavo Ayon got hurt.  It certainly hasn’t improved without Paul Millsap in the lineup either, although Millsap could return to the lineup this evening following an extended injury absence.

In recent games, the Hawks just allowed the hapless Celtics to hang 115 on them one night after offensively challenged Chicago scored 107 on this D.  For what it’s worth, the Celtics rank #26 in the NBA in scoring, putting up only 95 points per game, while the Bulls rank dead last with a 93 ppg average.  In their last outing, against uptempo Phoenix, the Hawks allowed 129 in a game that flew more than 30 points Over the total.

The betting markets have been lagging behind. Atlanta is now the #2 team in the NBA for Overs this year – only the Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: New Orleans Pelicans at Phoenix Suns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans at Phoenix -7 O/U 203
Recommendation: Phoenix

It doesn’t look as if Anthony Davis is going to be able to suit up for the Pelicans tonight after he hurt his shoulder in the first half of New Orleans ugly loss at Dallas on Wednesday.  Already without key starters Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, as well as Davis’ primary backup Jason Smith, the Pelicans are tanking these days.

New Orleans is winless since the All-Star break and losers of seven of their last eight, the lone win coming at hapless Milwaukee.  Without Davis on the floor, they got outscored by 13 after halftime against the Mavs.  The last time Davis missed a game, New Orleans scored only 77 points in a double digit loss at Minnesota.  And New Orleans will be walking into a real hornet’s nest in Phoenix tonight.

The Suns have avoided losing streaks like the plague for most of the season, but they’ve lost three straight and six of their last Read more

Golden State -3 at Chicago O/U 186.5
Recommendation: Golden State

My clients and I cashed a winner with the Warriors as they opened up this East Coast swing with a come-from behind victory at Detroit on Monday.  And the ‘buy’ sign on the Warriors is only getting brighter as they get healthier.

Starting center Andrew Bogut returned to the lineup on Monday, and starting power forward David Lee has been upgraded to ‘probable’ for tonight.  Both Jermaine O’Neal and Draymond Green played well in the absence of Marc Jackson’s two usual low post starters.  That leaves the Warriors with a deep, veteran frontcourt that is relatively fresh and playing at a high level right now.

When the Warriors beat the Bulls by 15 at home earlier this month, Chicago had no answers for Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Jordan Crawford and Harrison Barnes.  Golden State’s top four perimeter sharpshooters combined to hit 11-18 from Read more

San Antonio -1.5 at Phoenix O/U 208.5
Recommendation: San Antonio

My clients and I have already cashed four winning bets supporting San Antonio on their annual ‘Rodeo Road Trip’. And we’ve got another prime opportunity to make money riding the Spurs as they close out their extended trip tonight in Phoenix.

The Spurs go through this February stretch every season, and just about every season, they make money for their supporters.  They went 7-2 SU on this trip last year, 8-1 SU on this trip in 2012 and 6-3 SU on the trip in 2011.  I could go back further, but you get the point.  It’s surely worth noting that the Spurs have closed out their successful trips with a victory in their last Rodeo Road Trip game in each of the last three years.

“Spurs head coach Greg Popovich gets the point too.  “This is a time when we always try to make hay. Historically, that ‘Rodeo Road Trip’; that time before, Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: New York Knicks at New Orleans Pelicans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York +3.5 at New Orleans O/U 196
Recommendation: New York

The Knicks showed heart and fight last night, rallying from 18 points down to take a fourth quarter lead before allowing the Grizzlies to score the final seven points of the game.  Memphis got the win, Knicks backers got the money.

Tonight, the Knicks take a major step down in class as they travel to lottery bound New Orleans.  They got the rust off last night, in sharp contrast to the Pelicans, who haven’t played in a week.  New York has dominated this series despite their long-term struggles; 9-2 ATS in the last eleven meetings including five consecutive wins on this floor in New Orleans.  This is one road venue where the Knicks enjoy a level of confidence.

We’re getting an attractive pointspread to support the Knicks tonight, in large part because the Pelicans had a solid stretch of basketball heading into the break; 8-5 in their last 13 ballgames.  Much of that success was schedule related, taking advantage of a relatively weak slate of opponents, including the Bucks, Cavs, Pistons and Magic.  At 7.5 games out of the final Read more
