NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat at Chicago Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami +7.5 at Chicago O/U 204
Recommendation: Miami

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Chicago Bulls tonight; a team who’s internal chemistry has clearly fallen off a cliff in recent weeks.  The Bulls late game meltdown against Atlanta on Wednesday – a true ‘Moose’ for their pointspread backers, as the Hawks closed out the game on a 19-4 run over the last three minutes, erasing a ten point deficit in the process – made a bad situation worse.

Dwayne Wade ripped into his teammates following the loss: “Everyone don’t care enough…I don't know how you fix it. It just doesn't mean enough for guys around here to want to win ball games. It pisses me off. Games are supposed to hurt. You're not supposed to sleep. You're not supposed to want to talk to anybody. I don't know if that is in guys in this locker room.”

So did Jimmy Butler:  “Something is wrong. I want to play with guys who care, guys who play hard, who want to do well for this organization, who want to do whatever it takes to win.”
Then Rajon Rondo went off on his teammates on Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Golden State -5 at Houston O/U 239.5
Recommendation: Golden State

When these teams met for the first time this season, the Warriors were laying -11 to the Rockets at home.  Golden State never led by more than four points at any point during that game, eventually losing outright in overtime.  The key to Golden State’s weakness that night?  Nothing more than a rare poor shooting game from their starting backcourt, as Steph Curry and Klay Thompson combined to hit just 13-of-42 from the floor.  Meanwhile, Houston role player Ryan Anderson came off the bench to score 29, including five backbreaking three pointers.

Anderson has missed the last two games with the flu, no sure thing to suit up or be effective this evening.  Here’s the quote from Rockets head coach Mike D’Antonio, following Houston’s loss in Miami earlier in the week with an injury depleted roster: “These are dog days. We're going to have to find some energy and see if we can sneak one out."

It’s been an impressive first half of the season for the Rockets, currently sitting at #3 in the West – this is Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Memphis Grizzlies at Washington Wizards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis at Washington -2 O/U 207
Recommendation: Washington

The markets haven’t come close to catching up with the Wizards in recent weeks, particularly on their home floor.  The Wizards are 15-7 SU since their 2-8 start.  At home, the numbers are even more impressive: 12-0 SU, 11-1 ATS ; a streak that dates back to early December.  Shooting guard Bradley Beal: “We have that extra urge here, that will to want to win. We want to be a great team here and home, we want to have home court when playoff time comes around."

Washington’s run of success is no fluke.  Point guard John Wall is playing at a superstar level, ranked #5 in the NBA (behind Westbrook, Curry, Lowry and Paul) in REAL plus/minus for point guards.  Small forward Otto Porter has come into his own as well, ranked #6 at his position in REAL plus/minus, behind the likes of LeBron, Kawhi, Greek Freak, Durant and Jimmy Butler.  Marcin Gortat is cleaning up in the low post, Beal is draining three’s, and despite a relatively weak bench, Scott Brooks has a surging, confident team right now.

The Wizards are rested and Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Charlotte Bobcats at Philadelphia 76ers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charlotte at Philadelphia +5 O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions right now. Charlotte is slumping, losers of three straight on their current road trip and five of their last six overall.  The lone win during this entire stretch came in a game against OKC in which the Hornets got to the free throw line a whopping 49 times, compared to only 23 attempts for the Thunder.

Charlotte’s Nicholas Batum doesn’t attract much attention in the betting world, but he’s got a HUGE impact on the floor for the Hornets.  Here’s what forward Marvin Williams had to say about his teammate:

"I can't say enough about how much this team needs Nic Batum. Not only offensively what he brings to the table for himself and the rest of us, but defensively as well. He's such a smart player, such a great player, on both ends of the floor. When you (lose) a guy like that, who does so many things, the team does struggle a little bit in his absence. If he's back out there, it will make a huge difference."  Batum is VERY questionable tonight, still Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadephia 76ers at Boston Celtics

Philadelphia +11.5 at Boston O/U 213
Recommendation: Philadelphia

The Celtics consistently step up in statement games, bringing energy and execution against top notch foes.  But Boston is not a ‘win by double digits and blow teams out at home’ type of squad; 0-fer the season ATS as favorites of -8 or higher.

In fact, Brad Stevens squad is just a 40% ATS proposition at home – Boston is a 'back ‘em on the highway, fade em at home’ type of squad.  They faced Miami on this floor as nine point chalk last week; my clients and I cashing a winning bet when the Celtics only won by three.  Once again tonight, I’m not expecting Boston to bring their ‘A’ game for energy and effort.
The last time Boston played Philly on this floor, they won 84-80, never sniffing a pointspread cover as -12 point chalk.  And when these two teams met up in Philadelphia last month, the Celtics barely escaped with a one point victory on an Isaiah Thomas layup in the final minute as ten point favorites.  The Celtics are well aware that they don’t need their ‘A’ game to Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Detroit Pistons at Charlotte Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Charlotte -5 O/U 202
Recommendation: Charlotte

Let me start with the basic concept here.  Yes, Detroit got their starting point guard Reggie Jackson back on the floor for their last two games after Jackson missed the first six weeks of the season due to injury.  But while getting Jackson back running the point is a good thing for Stan Van Gundy’s squad in the long term, in the short term it does NOT make them a better squad.  For at least the next few games, while Jackson gets re-acclimated with his teammates, the Pistons base power rating number must be lowered, not raised.  Yet the markets have moved in the opposite direction.

Van Gundy, following Jackson’s first game back on the floor, a loss to Orlando: “We were terrible defensively, terrible. We didn’t put enough into it to win the game. They deserved to win. I think most nights we bring a decent effort. But we’ve been just too up and down defensively. We looked really slow tonight.”

Jackson’s quote: “It's going to take some time to get acclimated with my teammates again, but (the knee) felt good. I Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Indiana Pacers at Portland Trail Blazers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana at Portland -7.5 O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Portland

The Blazers have been a major early season disappointment.  After finishing with the #5 seed in the West last year, Portland is just 9-10 SU, 6-13 ATS to open the new campaign.  That includes six losses in their last eight games.  Twice in their last three contests, the Blazers have allowed their opponent to score 130+ against them!

Less than 12 hours following the latest loss – at home against Houston on Sunday – head coach Terry Stotts had his team back on the practice floor.  All Star point guard Damian Lillard: “This is the first time we've had a real practice in what seems like forever. It was good for us to try to sharpen up, (to have) coaches challenge us. It's to the point now where our pride has to kick in. We have to show how much we actually care about ... being better defensively."

Lillard continued: "We scored 125 points against Cleveland. That's a lot of points to score and not win a game. Right now, we're not getting it done on the defensive end. That's what it comes down to.”

Philadelphia +11.5 at Indiana O/U 210
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Indiana has no business as double digit chalk right now, even against the worst team in the NBA.  Don’t listen to my word – let Paul George tell you himself: “We’re all out of whack. There’s no trust, there’s no chemistry, there’s no belief. We’re kind of just lifeless right now.”

This team bought into Frank Vogel’s message throughout his tenure as Indiana’s head coach.  The first few weeks of the Nate McMillan era hasn’t produced anywhere near that same level of internal chemistry.  McMillan is trying to cobble together cohesive rotations following an offseason of significant personnel turnover, with a new point guard in Jeff Teague, a new starting wing in Thaddeus Young, and a new top scorer off the bench in Al Jefferson, among others.

The betting markets recognized those names; guys with a recent track history of success elsewhere, and have been convinced that the Pacers are primed to be a team on the rise.  But those big name veterans aren’t playing a lick of Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors must be willing to change opinions on the fly

05.16.2016     11:37 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Successful sportsbettors are not politicians.   Politicians take heat every time they change their opinion – flip-floppers!  A politician who is pro-choice on abortion, for example, will take enormous criticism from both sides, and will probably lose his or her next election if he or she switches to a pro-life stance.

Sports bettors, like politicians, are inevitably going to have some wrong opinions – about teams, about players, about coaches.  Bill Belichick was not a great coach with the Cleveland Browns, and was not highly regarded after suffering a losing campaign in his first year.  Greg Popovich certainly wasn’t a high profile, top notch hire when the Spurs decided he should be their head coach.  The Carolina Panthers weren’t taken seriously by most NFL analysts last year until they reached the Super Bowl.  Steph Curry wasn’t a superstar...until he was.
Throughout the world of sports and sportsbetting, everybody – E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y! – is going to have some wrong opinions.  But the differences in how bettors deal with those wrong opinions is fairly dramatic; often the Read more
