NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Chicago -2.5 O/U 204.5
Recommendation: Chicago

The Bulls aren’t likely to have Derrick Rose or Taj Gibson available tonight for their showdown with the Pistons.  That’s good news for Bulls bettors, not bad!  Without Rose in the lineup, this pointspread gets deflated into a ‘SU win should equal a pointspread cover’ range.  And the Bulls have certainly proven adept this season at cashing winning bets without one of their key players on the floor.

And Fred Hoiberg’s squad has looked squarely into the depths of the abyss and come out swinging.  Chicago suffered a four game skid at the wrong time, falling 2.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the East, with only nine games remaining.  The Bulls gut check moment came against the Pacers on Tuesday, when they held Indiana scoreless over the last 3+ minutes of gametime and won on a Jimmy Butler jumper with 3.7 seconds left.   They followed that up by rallying from 14 down late in the 3rd quarter to beat Houston on Thursday.

Coach Hoiberg: “I think the biggest thing is those guys went out there and played Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat at Sacramento Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami -6.5 at Sacramento O/U 212
Recommendation: Miami

Sacramento won’t have DeMarcus Cousins this evening thanks to his league leading 16th technical foul for sarcastically clapping following a late foul against the Wizards on Wednesday. And without Cousins, this team doesn’t win on any floor.  When he sat on Monday, the Kings trailed by 25+ all game before a late 16-1 run during garbage time made the final score look more respectable (and gave a brutal beat to Blazers backers).  Cousins sat against Minnesota last week; the Kings lost SU and ATS; again trailing by margin throughout  the second half.  He missed a home game against Orlando earlier in the month, another SU and ATS defeat.

In fact, the Kings are 2-10 SU in the dozen games that Cousins has missed this year, both wins coming against the Bucks on hot shooting nights from the perimeter.  Cousins also missed Sacramento’s first meeting with Miami.  The Kings were red hot that night, shooting at a 51% clip from the floor, including 12-23 shooting from three point range.  The Heat were still up by 16 in the fourth quarter before a Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Toronto Raptors at Houston Rockets

Toronto pk at Houston O/U 212
Recommendation: Toronto

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Houston Rockets in any pointspread range where they’ll need to win the game in order to cover the number.  It’s been a long, disappointing season for the JB Bickerstaff’s squad, fighting for the #8 seed in the West just one year after reaching the Western Conference Finals.

Wednesday Night’s home loss to Utah was the latest frustrating defeat for Houston, as they blew an 18 point second half lead, losing on a last second dunk by Derrick Favors.  The loss marked Houston’s third consecutive defeat, and fifth in their last seven games.  Their only two wins during this two week span have come against lowly Minnesota (they still didn’t cover the spread in victory) and Memphis when the Grizzlies had only one starter healthy enough to play.  This is not a confident team; nor are they a good team.  Bickerstaff’s post-game quote following the meltdown against the Jazz  didn’t inspire much confidence in this bettor either: “The season’s not over Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Phoenix Suns at Orlando Magic

Phoenix at Orlando -13.5 O/U 215.5
Recommendation: Orlando

Sometimes a write-up is better in graphic form.  I’m going to open this write-up with a chart, detailing the Phoenix Suns on the road since their last road win – at Chicago on December 3rd.

copy_suns.JPG

That’s not just a bad track record.  That’s an off-the-charts bad track record for a hopeless, injury riddled team that is now 3-30 SU in their last 33 games.  It’s surely worth noting that MOST of the losses listed above came without the opponent even taking the Suns seriously, often resting starters against this sorry squad.

When the Suns meet adversity on the highway, they’ve done one thing consistently for the last three months – they crumble like a house of cards.  With an interim, lame duck head coach in Earl Watson, it’s hard to picture a legitimate character change for the Suns in hostile environments down the stretch.

Scott Skiles Magic have notched double digit wins in each of their last two home games.  They’ve got a West Coast road trip just ahead, Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver +5 at Dallas O/U 209
Recommendation: Denver

Very quietly, waaaay underneath the national radar, the Dallas Mavericks have been falling apart for the better part of the last two months.  To call the Mavs poor home favorites is something of an understatement.  The results don’t lie.  Dallas has played 13 home games since the calendar turned to 2016.  They have led at the end of regulation in a grand total of three of those games.

The teams Dallas has been able to beat comfortably at home are not exactly elite.  They’ve beaten the 76ers, Nets and Suns – three of the four worst teams in the NBA (along with the Lakers, of course).  Twice Dallas has escaped with OT wins over non-playoff teams (Sacramento and Minnesota); more ‘lucky’ than ‘good’ even when stepping down in class.

In fact, the Mavs haven’t really been beating any competitive teams on any floor of late.  They are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games, with the wins coming against Philly, Brooklyn, the LA Lakers and Memphis without Marc Gasol in the lineup – not exactly an elite quartet. Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference second half preview

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote about what I’m expecting from the Western Conference in the eight week stretch between the end of the All-Star Break and the beginning of the playoffs.  This week, I’m going to focus on the East, before my attention turns to March Madness for the next few Wiseguy Reports.

There’s no question that the Eastern Conference is finally getting better after nearly two decades of playing second fiddle to the West.  Since Michael Jordan (and everybody else) left the Bulls following their sixth title in 1998, the Eastern Conference has only won five championships, something the Lakers and Spurs have each done five times by themselves during that span!  Detroit won in 2004, Miami won in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and Boston won in 2008.

And from all indications in the betting markets, the East isn’t very likely to win a title this year either.  Cleveland is the only team in the East priced at less than 15-1 to reach the Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Timberwolves at Memphis Grizzlies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Memphis -4.5 O/U 205
Recommendation: Over

Remember when the Grizzlies were a grind-it-out, halfcourt team that won games with elite defensive efforts?  The betting markets remember those days too!  Heck the Grizz were one of the slowest paced teams in the NBA on offense and one of the most efficient NBA teams on defense for the better part of the last five years.

But all that has changed here in 2016, and it changed even more at the trading deadline.  A sluggish halfcourt offense has transformed into a push-the-pace-in-transition offense.  A dismal three point shooting team that ranked 29 out of 30 NBA teams in three point shots made last year has suddenly become willing to jack up all kinds of shots from downtown.

The Grizzlies have lost low post defensive stud Marc Gasol to injury.  After dealing away Jeff Green and Courtney Lee at the trading deadline, embattled head coach Dave Joerger must adjust his defensive rotations, rotations which have underachieved throughout the course of the 2015-16 campaign – the Grizzlies are a middle of the pack defensive team, currently ranked #15 in Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Charlotte -3.5 O/U 192.5
Recommendation: Charlotte

To call this a flat spot for Miami is something of an understatement.  No team in the NBA has faced a more brutal scheduling stretch this season than what the Heat have just gone through.  Since their four game homestand ended with a win over New Orleans on Christmas Day, the Heat have played 22 games.  21 of those games involved a court change from the previous contest.  This will be their 14th road game in their last 16 contests overall.

The Heat have been riddled with key injuries throughout this stretch.  Four of their five starters have missed at least one game over the last month; and backcourt mates Dwayne Wade and Goran Dragic have both been dealing with a barrage of injury related concerns.  An ancient, creaking Amare Stoudamire sat on the end of the bench for the first two months of the season.  Over the past two weeks, he’s played at least 17 minutes in eight straight games, forced into action because Eric Spoelstra has very limited frontcourt depth these days.

This is the last game of the extended – seemingly Read more
