Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami at Charlotte -3.5 O/U 192.5
Recommendation: Charlotte

To call this a flat spot for Miami is something of an understatement.  No team in the NBA has faced a more brutal scheduling stretch this season than what the Heat have just gone through.  Since their four game homestand ended with a win over New Orleans on Christmas Day, the Heat have played 22 games.  21 of those games involved a court change from the previous contest.  This will be their 14th road game in their last 16 contests overall.

The Heat have been riddled with key injuries throughout this stretch.  Four of their five starters have missed at least one game over the last month; and backcourt mates Dwayne Wade and Goran Dragic have both been dealing with a barrage of injury related concerns.  An ancient, creaking Amare Stoudamire sat on the end of the bench for the first two months of the season.  Over the past two weeks, he’s played at least 17 minutes in eight straight games, forced into action because Eric Spoelstra has very limited frontcourt depth these days.

This is the last game of the extended – seemingly Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Orlando at Boston -8 O/U 205.5
Recommendation: Boston

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions right now.  On January 1st, the Magic had a one game lead over the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Playoff race, sitting in fifth place in the East.  Since that time, Orlando has gone into a 1-11 SU, 2-10 ATS tailspin, falling into a tie at #12 in the East.  Meanwhile, the Celtics have won four straight and seven of their last nine, a surging team here in January.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Magic of late, a team finding ways to lose.  They dropped back-2-back overtime games, then blew a 16 point lead and watched a one point deficit turn into a seven point final margin of defeat in the final 15 seconds at Milwaukee on Tuesday.

The quotes coming out of the Orlando locker room during this skid have been universally negative, with players and staff appearing to prod each other through the media.  Tobias Harris, following a crushing OT defeat at home to Charlotte last weekend: "In difficult times you have to fight your way through and you've got to come with a positive attitude Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Miami Heat at Toronto Raptors

Miami at Toronto -11 O/U 186
Recommendation: Toronto

The Miami Heat are in a world of hurt right now, a bet-against team in any reasonable price range.  My clients and I cashed an easy winner betting against Miami twice already this week, two blowout losses where they trailed from the opening tip.  And frankly, there’s little reason to expect a better effort as they travel to Toronto tonight.

The Heat are in the midst of a truly brutal scheduling stretch, as tough as any team will face all year.  They’re playing a stretch of 18 consecutive games with a court change, a nightmarish situation for a very banged up team that desperately needs some practice time that they’re not going to get anytime soon.

And "very banged up" doesn’t even accurately describe Eric Spoelstra’s squad right now.  ‘Decimated with injuries’ might be superior phraseology.  The Heat won’t have starting center Hassan Whiteside tonight, dealing with hip and knee injuries.  They won’t have starting guard Dwayne Wade either, out with a lingering shoulder injury.  Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Miami Heat at Phoenix Suns

Miami -5 at Phoenix O/U 196.5
Recommendation: Miami

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Phoenix Suns these days.  My power ratings have seen the Suns steadily dropping for the better part of the last month, from mediocre to bad to bottom feeder.  Here in the second week of January, I’ve got the Suns priced in the same range as Philadelphia and LA – clearly the two weakest teams in the NBA – below the likes of other weaklings like Denver, Minnesota and Brooklyn.

The chemistry problems in Phoenix have been on full display for weeks.  Head coach Jeff Hornacek saved his job only by dumping several of his top assistants.  Quote after quote coming out of the Suns locker room speaks of a team that doesn’t like each other very much and isn’t in position to turn things around anytime soon.

The Suns snapped a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 111-102 win over Charlotte. On the heels of two truly dismal showings – allowing 83 second half points in a blowout loss to the Kings, followed by scoring only 22 points in the first half of a blowout loss to the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Finals Preview - Cleveland vs. Golden State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There were a handful of relatively minor upsets in the first two rounds of the playoffs, but the favorites in each conference took care of business.  The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers have dominated the postseason, losing only five playoff games between them on their way to the NBA Finals.

Both teams faced their only tough tests in the second round – Cleveland had to rally back from a 2-1 series deficit to beat Chicago, while Golden State turned things around after they too, trailed Memphis 2-1 in their second round series.  Since facing those 2-1 series deficits, the Warriors are 7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS, while the Cavs have gone 7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS, with two of those three pointspread defeats coming by exactly a half a point (Games 4 and 5 against the Bulls).

The Warriors opened in the -250 range over the Cavs for the Finals, significant favorites to win their first title since 1975.  We have seen a smidgeon of Cleveland money, with the Warriors down to about -220 here in Las Vegas from the opener, slightly higher offshore.  But make no mistake about it – the Warriors are the clear wiseguy choice in this Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Golden State Warriors primed to win NBA title

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re down to the Final Four in the NBA Playoffs, but the path to a championship is crystal clear for only one team – the favorite (and favored for a reason) – Golden State.  Why do the Warriors have such a significant edge over the remaining field?  I’ve identified five reasons, breaking them down in detail in this week’s Wiseguy Report.

The Warriors opened in the -850 range in their Western Conference Finals series against the Rockets, as big of a favorite as you’ll ever see in any third round playoff series.  The first reason to like Golden State’s chances to win the title is that their path just to reach the Finals is easier than any other team’s path based on the price alone. The Rockets are big underdogs in this series, and the Cavs are only in the -200 to -220 range against Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Secondly, the Warriors are as healthy as any team remaining in the field.  The Cavs lost Kevin Love in the first round of the playoffs, then watched Kyrie Irving come up lame in the second round.  Atlanta lost designated LeBron-stopper Thabo Sefolosha to a season Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Wizards and Grizzlies have been postseason ATS darlings

05.11.2015     08:27 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2014 NBA Playoffs were something of an exception to the rule, because there were no red hot pointspread runs to open the playoffs.  In most years, one or two teams stand out as postseason pointspread overachievers as the playoffs begin.  This year, for example, we’ve got two of them – the Memphis Grizzlies and the Washington Wizards, a combined 12-3 ATS through the first two rounds.

I first really began paying serious attention to this phenomenon in 2009, when the Denver Nuggets opened up the playoffs on a 12-0 ATS run (11-0-1 ATS for some).  My clients and I were onboard for 11 of those 12 ATS victories; and I vowed to look for and find similar teams in the future – teams that hit their stride in late April after being widely overlooked by both bookmakers and bettors at the start of the postseason for whatever reason.

In 2010, Orlando swept their first two opponents in the playoffs, going 7-0-1 ATS in the process. The Phoenix Suns were also major moneymakers, going 8-2 ATS before running into the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.  2011 saw the Dallas Mavericks open up the playoffs by cashing at a Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs update

04.27.2015     08:26 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re midway through the opening round of the NBA Playoffs and the Eastern Conference still looks noticeably weaker than the West, just as it was during the regular season.  The Cavs weren’t really tested in their sweep over Boston, facing a Celtics team that probably would have struggled to won 30 games against a Western Conference slate.  Atlanta is 0-3 ATS in its first three games against the Nets, looking nothing like the team that dominated the East for extended stretches before the All-Star break.  The Bulls blew a chance to close out their series with the Bucks with a sweep, unable to seal the deal in the closing minutes of Game 4. And while Washington has looked every bit as good as any of the other Eastern Conference contenders, there’s still a lingering stink from the Wizards second half struggles and Randy Wittman’s consistent failures at getting his teams to overachieve.

So which of those four teams (assuming the Hawks don’t blow the series against the Nets) is truly elite, capable of winning at least two more series to make it to the Finals?  Cleveland is the prohibitive favorite to come out of the East, Read more
