Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Looking for NBA teams to bet on

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror, and MLB season is still two months away.  That means we’re In the heart of basketball season right now.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report I’ll take a look at a handful of NBA teams that offer legitimate bet-on potential as we approach the All-Star break.

The Cleveland Cavaliers spent the first half of the campaign disappointing their backers every bit as much as their fans.  In fact, the Cavs ranked among the very worst NBA teams against the spread, with a dismal 13-26 ATS mark in their first 39 games.  LeBron James was ailing, Kevin Love looked lost, key low post presence Anderson Varejao went out for the season with an Achilles tear and first year head coach David Blatt was under constant scrutiny, on the hotseat less than half the way through his first campaign.

The return to health of LeBron and a couple of trades have turned things around completely in Cleveland.  The Cavs have gone 10-0 SU, 9-0-1 ATS in their last ten ballgames; orchestrating a complete turnaround on the defensive end of the floor with former Nuggets center Timofey Mozgov anchoring the low Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There’s only one meaningful game remaining in the 2014 football season.  Meanwhile, the NBA has reached the halfway point of the 2014-15 campaign without much fanfare.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll be focusing on NBA Notes and Quotes from three pointspread outliers from the Eastern Conference.  How can we make money off these teams as they morph from contenders to pretenders or vice versa?  Read on to find out!

The Atlanta Hawks have been the single most under-reported story of the current NBA season, by a fairly wide margin.  Make no mistake about it – right now, the Hawks are the best team in the Eastern Conference and it’s not even close!  And, as a smaller market team without marquee superstars, Atlanta continues to retain their pointspread value; still very much a bet-on team two full months after their hot streak started!

Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer was a longtime Greg Popovich assistant in San Antonio, and his team is drawing comparisons to the Spurs on a nightly basis.  Budenholzer’s squad relies, like the defending champs, on ball movement and depth.  The Hawks lead Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets

San Antonio -5 at Denver O/U 205
Recommendation: San Antonio

On Friday’s Sportsmemo podcast, I warned listeners that the Spurs were a tad bit ‘fat and happy’ heading into their matchup with the Lakers, based on their performance without Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard two nights earlier when they blew out the Knicks.  And the Spurs came out as flat as a pancake against the Lakers, a performance that head coach Greg Popovich called ‘pitiful’ following the game.  "They had an edge, they were aggressive on both ends of the floor, they executed well and they definitely wanted the game more than we did. It seemed more important to them than to us. I thought our performance was pitiful."

Tim Duncan wasn’t very pleased either after losing the OT decision in SU fashion as 12.5 point favorites: “If you put a team in a situation like that, things like that can happen. We put the blame on ourselves.”  Manu Ginobili had similar sentiments: “It is frustrating. It's disappointing. Looks like we need to be challenged badly to get the best out of our Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Miami Heat at Memphis Grizzlies

Miami at Memphis -8 O/U 190.5
Recommendation: Memphis

The Heat haven’t been able to stay healthy enough to develop much on-court chemistry in the post-LeBron era, with Dwyane Wade bouncing in and out of the lineup and Luol Deng likely to sit once again tonight.  Miami hasn’t beaten a foe that’s anywhere near the .500 mark since the second week of November and I’m not expecting them to break that streak here.   Their only wins in the last three weeks have come against bottom feeders: the Knicks, Bobcats and Magic, all lottery bound foes.  And when the Heat lose, they aren’t coming close, showing plenty of fourth quarter quit.  Each of Miami’s last five losses has come by a double digit margin.

Memphis is a bet-on team today after suffering their first back-to-back losses of the season against Houston and San Antonio in their last two games.  The Grizz continue to  search for the respect that has consistently eluded them in recent seasons when they’ve been an afterthought upstart on the national stage, not a serious title contender.  Center Marc Gasol: Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Early season NBA betting trends

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re more than a month into the young NBA season, and there are numerous trends that have begun to rear their heads, offering the potential for continued returns throughout the course of the season.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll be putting some of these early season teams and angles that have been moneymakers thusfar under the microscope, assessing their potential continued profitability as the calendar turns to December.

Let me start with a pair of totals trends that have been cashing winning bet after winning bet through the first month of the campaign.  The high scoring, no-defense  Houston Rockets are 14-3 to the Under, followed closely by Oklahoma City at 13-4 to the Under.  Oklahoma City’s Under run makes more short term sense – they’ve been playing without their two superstars Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant, although Westbrook returned to the lineup last w eek and Durant is expected to follow in the near future.  The Thunder have relied heavily on their defense, slowing down the pace and keeping opponents out of the paint with Serge Ibaka and seven footers Kendrick Perkins and Steven Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns

Los Angeles at Phoenix -12 O/U 207
Recommendation: Phoenix

The Lakers are, by far, the worst team in the Western Conference, but the betting markets just haven’t gotten there yet.  Even with Phoenix as double digit favorites tonight, there’s still legitimate value betting against LA, particularly in this matchup where the Suns dynamic backcourt can run circles around the Lakers hapless defense.

LA's preseason was not a good one.  With a brand new coach and essentially a brand new roster, the Lakers struggled with injuries and attrition.  Point guard Steve Nash is out for the year.  New starter Jeremy Lin missed most of the preseason with a pair of sprained ankles.  Nick Young is out, as are Xavier Henry, Wayne Ellington and Ryan Kelly, severely diminishing LA's depth and flow on both ends of the court.

Now they are playing on the second night of an early season back-2-back situation coming off a demoralizing home blowout loss against Houston, and their top rookie, Julius Randle, just broke his leg. For a team trying to get an aging, ineffective Kobe Bryant back up to speed following a lost Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the NBA Season O/U Wins market

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Halloween week and the brand spankin’ new NBA season is upon us.  Some things have changed dramatically, most notably Lebron leaving Miami for a return trip to Cleveland.  That sets the books up for a real beating if the Cavs win the title next June since the Cavs opened as high as 60:1 before their enormous talent upgrade.

Other things remain exactly the same, like the fact that the West is much, much stronger than the East, just as it has been since the Bulls run of dominance with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen ended 17 years ago.  Let’s take a look at the upcoming NBA season from a betting perspective.

Other than the Cavs, many of the top contenders for the title remain the same.  The Spurs, Clippers, Thunder and Bulls are the only other teams besides Cleveland to be priced at less than 10:1 to win the title next June; all elite teams from last year.

The top two teams in the East from 2013-24 – Miami and Indiana – both took major offseason hits, with the Heat losing LeBron and the Pacers losing Lance Stephenson to free agency and Paul George to a broken leg.  Oklahoma City, Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the Western and Eastern Conference Finals

Only four teams remain standing in the NBA Playoffs; one of whom will bring home the title less than a month from now.  For all the drama of the first two rounds, it’s an all-chalk Final Four, with the top two seeds from each conference battling for supremacy.

With both Conference Finals getting underway on Sunday and Monday, I’ll take a closer look at the two series.  The goal, as always, is to unearth hidden nuggets pointing towards future pointspread success while assessing pace and totals as well.

Predicting series success generally correlates strongly with predicting pointspread success when it comes to the NBA Playoffs.  But not as much as last year!  In 2013, the Final Four teams combined to go 31-11 (74%) against the spread in the first two rounds of postseason; each of the four teams cashing at a 67% clip or better.  The ‘surprise’ team of the four, Memphis, went 10-1 ATS through the first two rounds before covering only once while getting swept by San Antonio.

The ATS success of the Final Four teams in 2014 pales in comparison to 2013.  Between them, the NBA’s Final Four have turned a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Betting adjusted series prices after Game 1

05.07.2014     12:43 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Brooklyn is now +700 or higher, up from +400-ish prior to Game 1. All the Nets have done is lose a Game 1 that they were supposed to lose as +8 underdog dogs in a very tough spot.

The Blazers are in the +550 range now, up from +330-ish in the exact same circumstance as Brooklyn – lose a game they were supposed to lose.

So there's no question in my mind – there's good value on both underdogs on the series price prior to Game 2.

But value isn't enough to get me to the betting window with either Brooklyn or Portland.

Getting to Game 7 won't be enough to make for a profitable hedge. Both the Spurs and the Heat are likely to be in the -400 range on the moneyline at home in a Game 7, and that would be the only safe way to hedge off. Doesn't leave much profit, and that's IF either squad can force a Game 7.

When it comes to winning four of the next six (or five, or four straight), I simply don't think the Nets or Blazers can do it.

I'm constantly looking for value with bets I feel I can win –that's the essence of my job – or bets that I feel I'll be able to profitably hedge off down the line. Neither Brooklyn Read more
