NBA Handicapping: Atlanta Hawks looks to bounce back after 58-point performance

01.16.2013     11:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Brooklyn at Atlanta -3 O/U 187.5

Atlanta's last game wasn't pretty – a reoccurring theme over the last two weeks (1-6 SU/ATS run). Today the organization decided to suspend Josh Smith for conduct detrimental to the team. So what can we expect for tonight's game against red hot Brooklyn? A database search shows teams that scored 60 point or fewer are 13-12 SU and 14-11 ATS in their next outing dating back to 1999. The stronger trend though looks to be with totals with seven straight contests going OVER.

In case you missed it, check out this dandy of a box score. And when your coach can't put his finger on what's wrong, it suggests things aren't going to get better overnight. Time to bust out the obligatory lineup change!

“The disturbing thing is the effort part,” Drew said. “I shouldn’t have to come out and coach effort every single night. Effort is something that they should bring. They are being paid to bring effort every single night. Maybe it’s the chemistry right now. I don’t know but I’m going to have to do something to jump start us because right now we have flat-lined. Not just from a physical standpoint. Mentally, we have flat-lined and I’ve got to find a way to resuscitate this team.”

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota's lack of defense leads to 4-10 ATS slide

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Minnesota Timberwolves went from playing great defense to not playing a lick of defense over the course of the last month. It's resulted in a 4-10 SU/ATS slide. Good read at NBA.com on some of the theories behind the regression. The T-wolves play host to the Clippers on Thursday.

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: New Orleans Hornets at Philadelphia 76ers

New Orleans +3 at Philadelphia O/U 184
Recommendation: New Orleans

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions right now.  Forget New Orleans' 11-26 full season record – it’s meaningless.  The Hornets got star shooting guard Eric Gordon and #1 overall draft pick Anthony Davis back in the lineup and they’ve started to win.

First the Hornets knocked off Dallas in Dallas.  Then they beat the red hot Spurs, a team playing as well as any in the league through the first two and half months of the season.  They rallied from a double-digit deficit at the end of three quarters to knock off the Rockets, and rallied from another double digit deficit to beat Minnesota.  The key in all four games was defense and rebounding – New Orleans won the rebounding battle each time and held all three opponents to 92 points or less in regulation.

But New Orleans played poorly against the Knicks at Madison Square Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls

Atlanta at Chicago -4.5 O/U 184
Recommendation: Under

The Bulls have dropped two straight games at the United Center, which is an extreme rarity under head coach Tom Thibodeau.  They lost to the Bucks and Suns, while allowing a combined 201 points.  It makes sense the Bulls will turn it up on the defensive end on their home court tonight.  The Bulls did beat the Knicks on Friday night at Madison Square Garden, 108-101.  Keep in mind the Knicks really pushed the pace in that game trying to get back into the contest, while falling down by double-digits.  In the fourth quarter alone there were 69 points scored.  Meanwhile, the Hawks are stumbling over themselves in January.  They’re 1-5 in their last six games and struggling on offense.  They’ve remained a soft team, while too quick to launch a jump shot and not fighting for better looks in their half-court offense.  The task will continue to be tough tonight as the Bulls are actually Read more

NBA Handicapping: Golden State looks for better post defense vs. Portland

01.11.2013     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland at Golden State -7.5 O/U 206.5

Some good in-depth stats to consider for tonight's Golden State-Portland matchup. Over their last two games, the Warriors were carved up in the paint by both the Clippers and Grizzlies to the tune of 56 and 60 points, respectively. Portland ranks 28th in the league in points in the paint at 35.9.

Golden State is 5-10 when yielding at least 41 points in the paint and 17-2 when allowing 40 or fewer.

"That's the strength of their team, is grinding in the paint and offensive rebounding," said David Lee, who has double-doubles in 11 of his last 14 games against Portland, including each of the last three. "It's disappointing, because that's been one of our strengths throughout the season, and we've just got to come back and do a better job of it next game."

NBA Gambling News: Orlando Magic drop 10 straight but cover four of last five

01.11.2013     06:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not much was expected of the Orlando Magic this season. They were lined at 23.5 wins – eight wins below Cleveland and nine wins below Detroit. But a few days prior to Christmas, things were looking up. The team had won four straight and were only one game below .500. But then they went on the road to Toronto and lost a tough three-point game. They followed in up with another close loss; 97-93 vs. Utah. And after that, you guessed it, a 97-94 home loss to New Orleans. So here were are three weeks later and all of a sudden, Orlando is on a 10-game losing streak. The Magic lost to Miami in overtime, to Chicago by 2, another overtime lost at Portland, and last time out a three-point loss at Denver. The one positive is that Orlando remains competitive having covered four of their last five (19-16 ATS YTD). Also note nine of those 10 games went OVER the total. Orlando's upcoming schedule is favorable. After closing out their West Coast trip at the Clippers on Saturday, they face the likes of Washington, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit (twice) and Toronto over the next two weeks.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Boston Celtics

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Boston -9 O/U 191.5
Recommendation: Boston

The Celtics hit rock bottom over the holidays; blown out in all three games on their West Coast swing (losing by 29, 18 and 22 points, all non-competitive efforts), then returning home only to get whipped by double-digits by the Grizzlies.  Instead of collapsing, the Celtics have rebounded with three consecutive strong performances – a 19-point blowout over the Pacers followed by back-to-back SU wins as road underdogs against playoff caliber competition (Atlanta and New York).  All of a sudden the Celtics have some swagger back!

Avery Bradley isn’t the type of name player that will move a pointspread when he’s hurt or healthy.  But make no mistake about it – Avery Bradley is absolutely an impact player for these Celtics; a defensive stopper on the perimeter.  Bradley returned to the starting lineup against Philly and Doc Rivers’ squad has enjoyed three of their best defensive Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Lakers at San Antonio -13.5 O/U 216
Recommendation: San Antonio

It's hard to imagine that the San Antonio Spurs are a huge 13.5-point favorite over a team that acquired Steve Nash and Dwight Howard in the off-season to compliment Kobe Bryant. Yes, they have injuries. Howard and Gasol were absent last night at Houston and with no real talent or big bodies to fill in the gaps, the Rockets dominated the paint scoring inside and driving to the basket for 62 points. But, injuries are only half the problem.

At this point in the Los Angeles Lakers' season I'm not sure if new head coach Mike Dantoni is the right fit. We know from the past that Dantoni's teams can score as the Lakers are averaging 103 ppg but they are also allowing 100 ppg, which ranks 27th in the NBA. Then there is the chemistry issue. We could write several pages of player's complaining and back Read more
