NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Clippers at Golden State +1.5 O/U 200
Recommendation: Golden State

This is a truly miserable spot for the LA Clippers.  Their franchise record 17-game winning streak was snapped in Denver last night in a 14-point defeat, the type of game that showed how worn down LA is right now.  They’ve got a huge showdown with the LA Lakers on tap for Friday Night.  In between, they’ve got to travel from altitude on the second night of back-to-backs to face off against a surging Warriors team that has been undervalued by the betting markets all year; a top 3 team in terms of profitability and ATS results so far this season.  Don’t expect the Clippers’ best effort here.

Meanwhile, Golden State has proven that they can beat the Clippers – they handed LA a loss at the Staples Center as 8.5 point dogs back in November in the lone previous meeting between these two teams.  The Warriors are, by a wide margin, the better of these two Read more

NBA Handicapping: Philadelphia's lackluster defense results in five-game losing skid

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta -2 at Philadelphia O/U 188

Philadelphia head coach Doug Collins is apparently none too pleased with his team's defensive effort of late. The 76ers have lost five straight (0-5 ATS) and allowed 111, 107 and 125 points their last three.

“He doesn’t really show it too much, but you can definitely tell,” forward Thad Young said of his coach’s frustration level after a 125-103 loss to the Rockets. “Being here the last three years and seeing how mad he gets at times, how frustrated he gets, I know right now with us constantly losing games, it’s getting to him. I’s getting to the whole coaching staff. It’s getting to us.”

“I’ve always walked into games with a defensive mindset,” Young said. “And right now, we’re trying to outscore teams and we don’t have Read more

NBA Handicapping: Defense keeping Orlando Magic competitive

Orlando at Toronto -4 O/U 187

One of this season's biggest surprises has been the Orlando Magic (12-13) – in particular their performance on the defensive end of the floor. Under head coach Jacque Vaughn's tutelage, the Magic are currently sixth in the league in defensive efficiency (98.8). Last year, with three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard, the Magic ranked 13th (101.7). Orlando has gone UNDER the total in six of its last eight games.

"I don't mind if we have zero steals," Vaughn said recently. "I love to have contested shots, and I love for us to be in a position to rebound the basketball."

"If there's anything that has surprised me, it's been our level of defense and our defensive competence," guard J.J. Redick said.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings

Golden State -3 at Sacramento O/U 198
Recommendation: Golden State

If you have been betting on the Golden State Warriors lately, Christmas has come early. They are on a 7-1 straight up run, including 5-3 against the spread, and nine games over .500 overall – their best start in 20 years.

The Warriors are one of the youngest in the NBA, with four starters 24 years old or younger and they are getting the job done without the services of supposedly their best player, center Andrew Bogut who has been out of the lineup for several weeks. Head coach Mark Jackson has done a great job with the roster putting players in role positions and the offense is clicking averaging 100 points per game.

Some handicappers would definitely shy away from wagering on Golden State tonight, having played last night at home against New Orleans in what would be classified as a tired road favorite. However, when a team is on a roll playing their best basketball right Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Detroit Pistons at Toronto Raptors

Detroit at Toronto -2.5 O/U 187
Recommendation: Toronto

My clients and I cashed a ticket on the Toronto Raptors in their 113-99 road win against the Cleveland Cavaliers last night. Here’s an excerpt from that write-up about the changes with the Raptors that have led to their current three game win streak: “For a very long period of time, Toronto couldn't find a way to win games especially the close ones and had their own ugly stretch where they lost six games in a row. At the tail end of that slump, Andrea Bargnani and Kyle Lowry got injured for the Raptors (those two are not great defenders) and head coach Dwane Casey said enough is enough and that the team needed to get back to their defense first mindset and since then, the Raptors reeled off B2B home wins against Dallas and Houston. They’ve played stellar defensively since Casey made his point and have held their last two opponents to 41% or lower shooting in those wins.”

NBA Handicapping: San Antonio an underdog at Oklahoma City

San Antonio at Oklahoma City -5 O/U 207

The San Antonio Spurs find themselves in one of those rare instances where they are an underdog. Since the start of the 2010 campaign San Antonio has only been a dog in 34 games and frankly their straight up performance has been underwhelming at 11-23. For such a well-coached team and such a veteran bunch they haven't exactly stepped up in class very well.

As far as the spread in concerned they've been exactly a 50% play on or against with an average line of about four points. But there is one strong angle here and that is to play the over in these games. In the 34 instances where they've been lined as a dog the over has cashed 24 times.

Tonight’s matchup with Oklahoma City features the league’s top two scoring offenses. Note that Manu Ginobli is expected to miss out due to injury.

NBA Handicapping: Golden State goes for its sixth straight road victory at Orlando

Golden State -4.5 at Orlando O/U 194

The Golden State Warriors have quietly put together one of the most impressive streaks in the NBA this season – five consecutive road wins (4-1 ATS). They've been on the East Coast since last Wednesday and close out their trip tonight in Orlando. According to one database, teams that have won five straight road games are 12-7 SU/ATS in a sixth road game.

"We are a humble team," power forward David Lee said. "We know we're not the most talented team in the league. We can't underestimate anybody, and it'll continue to be that way, even if we win 30 games in a row. We can't afford a letdown."

"We thought that we had a chance to be a solid six-through-eight seed in the West," Lee said. "I understand a lot of people thought we weren't going to make Read more

NBA Gambling: Let's all chuckle at the Lakers' postgame quotes under Mike D'Antoni

12.14.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under Mike D'Antoni, the Los Angeles Lakers are 4-9 SU/ATS. Last night on national TV, LA trailed the New York Knicks 68-49 at halftime and went on to lose 116-107 marking the sixth time in seven games the defense allowed 100+. In less than a month, the mood of this team has gone from casual concern to DEFCON 2. Let's recap (and laugh at) some of the postgame quotes from the D'Antoni-led Lakers starting with his debut win over Brooklyn and culminating in Kobe's comedic gem following last night's loss to the Knicks.

11/20 - ''With this team, there's no reason not to win every game,'' D'Antoni said. ''That's our goal. It's not, 'Let's get two out of three.' We can win every game we play. ... I feel like we're the best team in the league. We've got the most talent, so they can do what they want. We've just got to keep perfecting things.''

11/21 - ''If we're going to play Showtime, my God, they just closed the whole theatre on us,'' D'Antoni said. ''Showtime, are you kidding? It was Muppet Time.''

11/23 - ''Offense is all about rhythm,'' said D'Antoni who used a stool to talk to reporters before and after the game in the only nod to his recovery Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks play host to struggling Lakers

LA Lakers at New York -6.5 O/U 208

Tons of storylines for tonight's Lakers-Knicks showdown at Madison Square Garden. New York comes in winners of seven of eight. Last time out they trailed Brooklyn 30-16 after one quarter of play. No worries as the Knicks shot 14-of-28 from three and went on to win 100-97. The Lakers obviously haven't been as fortunate. The defense has allowed 100+ in six of their last seven games (2-5 SU). And this is a pretty amazing stat courtesy of ESPN: Mike Woodson is 34-11 since taking over the Knicks from Mike D'Antoni -- and 19-1 at the Garden. Last February, the Knicks were a 4.5-point home underdog against LA (NY won 92-85) and now they are laying -6.5. New York has covered 28 of its last 34 at the Garden.

Jarrett Jack high-fived the entire sports betting community in this postgame interview

12.13.2012     05:53 AM     Printer Friendly
We all become giddy when Mike Tirico references the total on Monday Night Football or when Brent Musburger strings us along for a quarter and a half before blatantly divulging he took the points. But those subtle on-air nods to sports betting pale in comparison to this gem.

Golden State's Jarrett Jack gave a postgame interview following last night's win at Miami. He runs the gamut with "team effort", "playing with confidence", etc. Then at the 2:30 mark, things get cool/weird/uncomfortable/mind-blowing. Enjoy.
