NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Toronto Raptors at Sacramento Kings

Toronto at Sacramento -2.5 O/U 197
Recommendation: Sacramento -2.5

Sacramento hosts the Raptors tonight in what looks to be a very competitive game. Toronto has guard Kyle Lowry back in the line-up and coupled with a healthy Andrea Bargnani at power forward can hang with any of the bottom half of the NBA ranked teams. But, in this particular instance, I see a few reasons to support the home side.

The Kings are 4-12, but all four wins have come at home. They are on a three-game losing streak but in the last two games they were without perhaps their best player Tyreke Evans who was sidelined with a knee injury. King's head coach Keith Smart says he expects Evans to play on Wednesday. Evans practiced on Monday and on Tuesday was performing sprints and shooting drills.

The urgency of Tuesday's practice for Sacramento was defense due to surrendering a season high 55% shooting to the L.A. Clippers. The Kings only managed 81 points in that game. With Evans back in the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons trending UNDER the total

Golden State at Detroit -1 O/U 191.5

After being on the road and outclassed the first two weeks of the season, the Detroit Pistons have played some better basketball of late including five straight wins at home. Head coach Lawrence Frank credits the turnaround to more effort on defense. The Pistons have gone UNDER the total in 10 of their last 13 games.

"It just goes to show you if we'll continue to commit and grind and work at it what we're capable of doing," Frank said Tuesday after practice. "It's similar to the trend from last year. That's when we started to play better basketball.

"You have to stand for something and, for us, we have to be a defense-first team."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Portland Trail Blazers at Charlotte Bobcats

Portland at Charlotte -1 O/U 192
Recommendation: Charlotte

Charlotte was the worst team in NBA history last year. But a new coach, a rebuilt roster and a handful of early season wins has this team feeling fairly confident these days. The betting markets remember what happened under Paul Silas and his son in 2011-12. The current Bobcats roster has very little connection with that squad, a pointspread bargain in early season play. They’ve already matched last seasons’ win total, and have a winning SU record at home so far.

Kemba Walker is developing into a fine young point guard, reminiscent of his national championship season at UConn, making great decisions with the basketball particularly during crunch time of the fourth quarter. He's a winner, plain and simple. Head coach Mike Dunlap: ''He's setting the culture for us. There's a lot on his plate, but he can handle it." Ramon Sessions and Ben Gordon have provided instant offense on the wing. Rookies Michael Read more

Philadelphia -3.5 at Charlotte O/U 189
Recommendation: Over

After seeing Philadelphia live at Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night versus Dallas, it seems like a good time to step in and look at them from an OVER perspective right now. Offensively, head coach Doug Collins crew operated quicker and much sharper in their sets for the majority of the game. The starting forward tandem of Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young are becoming a handful and figure to be just that for their counterparts Byron Mullens and Michael Kidd-Gichrist tonight. There are other matchups that look exploitable in this game as well. Sixers PG Jrue Holliday fares much better against size than quickness which indicates Bobcats PG Kemba Walker could have a very nice stat line tonight. I like the bench opportunities here too as the Mavericks reserve guards Darren Collison and Vince Carter scored fairly easily when matched with Malik Wayns (Villanova rookie) and Nick Young. That should work here too as Charlotte’s Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Spurs to rest Duncan, Ginobli, Parker and Green vs. Heat

San Antonio at- Miami -12 O/U 200

While nothing in the world of sports betting is guaranteed, if you have some Miami Heat -5.5 in your pocket, it may be the easiest bet you win all year. With tonight being their sixth road game in nine nights, San Antonio has decided to sit Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, and Danny Green. Stephen Jackson (finger) and Kawhi Leonard (quad) are also out leaving the Spurs without six of their top seven scorers. CRIS reopened the game Miami -12 with a total of 200. Gary Neal swings the ball to Matt Bonner who pump fakes and dumps it down low to DeJaun Blair. Blair backs in, kicks it out Borris Diaw who hits Patty Mills cutting to the basket...yikes.

NBA Handicapping: San Antonio closes out road trip at Miami

San Antonio at Miami -5.5 O/U 204

Big matchup on TNT tonight as San Antonio heads to Miami to take on the Heat. The two teams hooked up just once last year with Miami rolling to a 120-98 home victory. The Spurs will be playing their sixth road game in nine days. Head coach Gregg Popovich was able to limit the minutes of his veterans in last night's 110-89 win at Orlando. San Antonio is once again covering pointspreads at an incredible rate with a 10-5 ATS mark. Over the last two seasons, the Spurs are 52-25-1 ATS and 49-32-1 O/U. After a home-friendly schedule to start the year, the Heat have played six of their last eight on the road (3-5 ATS). And despite going 6-2 SU during that span, not one of those wins came by double-digits. Early money for tonight’s contest has come in on the Spurs (+6.5 to +5.5).

NBA Handicapping: New York Knicks cool off, unable to practice due to schedule

New York -2 at Milwaukee O/U 202

Things started well for the Knicks with a perfect 6-0 SU/ATS run to open the campaign. But since then their much talked about defense has struggled at times (see: three-game stretch where they allowed 115 ppg). The reason could be attributed to a tough stretch of schedule which counting tonight includes seven games in 11 days. And of course we're not dealing with the youngest team in the league. So much so that the Knicks haven't had a full-on practice since November 14th.

“I’ve always felt that practice keeps you sharp in terms of rotations from a defensive standpoint and on offense from an execution standpoint,” Woodson said Wednesday before the Knicks’ latest shootaround. “We just haven’t had a chance to practice. Read more

NBA Handicapping: Harden returns to OKC, Thunder a 9-point favorite

Houston at Oklahoma City -9 O/U 207.5

James Harden returns to face his former team Oklahoma City tonight. The Houston guard was adamant about saying it is just another game. The Thunder are off to a strong 11-4 start and have covered five of their last six games. The Rockets have won and covered three straight.

“I’m on the road trying to get a win,” Harden said Tuesday. “That’s no different than when we played at Memphis or Atlanta or whatever the case may be.”

“He’s going to be in a different zone,” Cook said. “At the end of the day, if anybody knows, I know this game means a lot to him. He’s going to want to play his best basketball. This game means so much right now to him. You’re going to see a different mindset with him.

Toronto at Houston -6 O/U 201.5
Recommendation: Under

Most of my NBA handicapping time is spent analyzing team matchups and projecting how many points they will score and surrender against their next opponent and thus I have a total to work with versus the betting line. I don't do too much work subjectively with the NBA rosters and use current stats for the bulk of my breakdown.

In my opinion the totals line for this game tonight between Toronto and Houston is too high for several reasons. Houston in their last game poured in 131 points against the Knicks and gives us some line value here.  Also, the Knicks were clearly lackluster, tired, on the third and last road game of a four-day road game trip, and it was their sixth road game in 10 days. The Rockets couldn't miss a shot it seemed hitting 52 percent from the field, 56 percent from three-point range and they got to the charity stripe 28 times that resulted in 25 free throw points. The totals line on that game Read more
