NBA Gambling: Let's all chuckle at the Lakers' postgame quotes under Mike D'Antoni

12.14.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under Mike D'Antoni, the Los Angeles Lakers are 4-9 SU/ATS. Last night on national TV, LA trailed the New York Knicks 68-49 at halftime and went on to lose 116-107 marking the sixth time in seven games the defense allowed 100+. In less than a month, the mood of this team has gone from casual concern to DEFCON 2. Let's recap (and laugh at) some of the postgame quotes from the D'Antoni-led Lakers starting with his debut win over Brooklyn and culminating in Kobe's comedic gem following last night's loss to the Knicks.

11/20 - ''With this team, there's no reason not to win every game,'' D'Antoni said. ''That's our goal. It's not, 'Let's get two out of three.' We can win every game we play. ... I feel like we're the best team in the league. We've got the most talent, so they can do what they want. We've just got to keep perfecting things.''

11/21 - ''If we're going to play Showtime, my God, they just closed the whole theatre on us,'' D'Antoni said. ''Showtime, are you kidding? It was Muppet Time.''

11/23 - ''Offense is all about rhythm,'' said D'Antoni who used a stool to talk to reporters before and after the game in the only nod to his recovery Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks play host to struggling Lakers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Lakers at New York -6.5 O/U 208

Tons of storylines for tonight's Lakers-Knicks showdown at Madison Square Garden. New York comes in winners of seven of eight. Last time out they trailed Brooklyn 30-16 after one quarter of play. No worries as the Knicks shot 14-of-28 from three and went on to win 100-97. The Lakers obviously haven't been as fortunate. The defense has allowed 100+ in six of their last seven games (2-5 SU). And this is a pretty amazing stat courtesy of ESPN: Mike Woodson is 34-11 since taking over the Knicks from Mike D'Antoni -- and 19-1 at the Garden. Last February, the Knicks were a 4.5-point home underdog against LA (NY won 92-85) and now they are laying -6.5. New York has covered 28 of its last 34 at the Garden.

Jarrett Jack high-fived the entire sports betting community in this postgame interview

12.13.2012     05:53 AM     Printer Friendly
We all become giddy when Mike Tirico references the total on Monday Night Football or when Brent Musburger strings us along for a quarter and a half before blatantly divulging he took the points. But those subtle on-air nods to sports betting pale in comparison to this gem.

Golden State's Jarrett Jack gave a postgame interview following last night's win at Miami. He runs the gamut with "team effort", "playing with confidence", etc. Then at the 2:30 mark, things get cool/weird/uncomfortable/mind-blowing. Enjoy.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Memphis Grizzlies at Phoenix Suns

Memphis at Phoenix +6 O/U 195
Recommendation: Phoenix

Last year Memphis had too many injuries to compete with the big boys in the Western Conference and now with a healthy Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, they are off to a 14-4 start, won six of their last eight games, and more importantly for bettors have a 12-5-1 ATS record. The early season team concept with the Grizzlies so far has been to focus on defense and with their physical style of play they’ve been getting the job done against just about anyone that doesn't have the big bodies to match.

The Suns have the talent and big bodies to hang in this match-up, but they have been lacking effort, durability and a scoring punch. They scored consistently 97, 99, 98, 94, 99 and 90 in their last seven games but lost them all and surrendered 100 points of more in five of those games. Also, turnovers have been killing this team. They had a season high 20 turnovers against the Clippers two games ago and 12 versus Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Sacramento Kings at Milwaukee Bucks

Sacramento +6.5 at Milwaukee O/U 198.5
Recommendation: Sacramento

The Kings’ 1-7 straight up road record makes it tough to side with them away from Power Balance Pavilion but I’ll lean on the stronger numbers and fundamentals here. While winning one out of eight sounds bad, being 3-5 against the spread in those eight makes the mark a bit easier to accept. The real eye opening technical trends come in the form of head-to-head matchups where the road team in this series is 9-1 ATS over the last 10 contests and the underdog is 8-2 ATS. Those extremely strong historical results combined with Milwaukee’s recent 4-7 ATS run and offensive shutdown (scored 100+ just once in that string without the help of overtime) make taking +6.5 very appealing. Fundamental aspects support the Kings in this game as well since their frontline rotation should hold a physical advantage over Milwaukee’s  and their backcourt will include Tyreke Evans tonight which makes them very Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks look to go to Chandler vs. Lopez-less Nets

12.11.2012     02:05 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York -3.5 at Brooklyn O/U 195

Perhaps a good opportunity for a prop bet in tonight's New York-Brooklyn matchup. In the first meeting, New York's Tyson Chandler scored 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting against Brook Lopez. Lopez (ankle) isn't expected to play tonight (hello defensive goofball Andray Blatche!) while Jason Kidd, who missed the first meeting, will suit up. You would think the Knicks would try and take advantage of the Nets by using plenty of Kidd-Chandler pick-and-rolls. Since that season-high 28 points, Chandler has scored 14 or more in five of seven games. If you can find a place that offers Chandler’s O/U points, the OVER appears to be worth a look.

"Tyson has played extremely well this season and we want to keep him involved and playing at a high level like that," Woodson said after Tuesday morning's Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Clippers at Chicago Bulls

LA Clippers -2.5 at Chicago O/U 189
Recommendation: Los Angeles

I think the Los Angeles Clippers can head in to the Windy City and pick up a road win in the second half of ESPN’s NBA doubleheader tonight. The Clippers have won six games in a row including a game in which they handed the Utah Jazz their first home loss of the season. Chris Paul continues to efficiently run the point for the Clippers with an astonishing 86 assists and just 25 turnovers in LA’s last 10 games. Blake Griffin is averaging nearly a double-double per game and he’s feasted on Chicago in the past averaging 30.3 points per game and 12 rebounds per game in four career starts. The bench is certainly deeper on the Clippers with the likes of Jamal Crawford, Eric Bledsoe, Matt Barnes and Lamar Odom all capable of coming into a game and producing.

Chicago’s depth will be challenged tonight with Richard Hamilton out indefinitely due to plantar fascia in his left foot. Kirk Hinrich who Read more

LA Lakers -6 at Cleveland O/U 203.5
Recommendation: Over

Well, it hasn't taken long for the Lakers to start playing Mike D'Antoni style basketball. D'Antoni failed to win at all with the Knicks and he failed to reach the Finals during his extended tenure in Phoenix because his teams simply couldn't get stops. D'Antoni's teams play consistently poor defense in every aspect of the game – bad transition D, bad halfcourt D, bad low post D, bad perimeter D – you name it, it's been bad. The Lakers have lost four of their last five, while allowing 113 points per game on better than 47% shooting in those defeats. LA has been particularly bad in transition, allowing 19 points per game on fast breaks over their last four contests. Kobe Bryant: "(We're") just giving up too many transition points."

The Cavaliers certainly aren't defensive juggernauts either, allowing more than 100 points per game on 48% shooting so far this season. That 48% shooting allowed is Read more

NBA Handicapping: So the Lakers haven't been very good on defense of late

12.10.2012     09:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If someone told you the Lakers would have a six-game stretch of games in which they scored 110, 108, 103, 105, 103, and 122, what would have guessed their SU and ATS record to be? Based on some of the early season results, certainly a winning record and some decent profits, no? Prior to this recent six-game swatch, the Lakers were 6-1 SU and ATS when they topped the century mark. But over their last six games, despite averaging 108.5 ppg, LA is 2-4 SU and 3-3 ATS. The saving grace for them ATS was a lucky backdoor cover as 7.5-point underdogs against Oklahoma City. The reason for their failures is obvious – the defense has been awful. Not only did they allow 103 or more five times but they surrendered 117 to Utah, 115 to Oklahoma City and 113 to Orlando.

"I just don't think we have a gut-checking moment yet," D'Antoni said. "At some point, we're going have to draw a line in the sand and that's it, you've got to fight. . . . Somehow, we've got to play tougher."

"This is a time where a lot of teams Read more
