NBA Handicapping: How bad has it gotten for the Brooklyn Nets?

How bad has it gotten in Brooklyn? Injuries and age seem to be the big story lines and after getting run off their home court last night by the Trail Blazers the Nets apparently held a players only meeting and ditched their press responsibilities. The disappointing loss was their fifth in six games and dropped them to 3-7 overall on the season.

It seemed like this was always going to be an uphill battle for this team. Yes they made headlines with the moves to bring in former all-star veterans but you can’t win on name alone in this league. I think the lofty expectations were a bit misguided coming into the campaign. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett both look as old on the court as they do on paper. Deron Williams hasn’t been healthy in a couple of years and even when he does suit up he looks like a shell of his former self. Joe Johnson is averaging the fewest points per game of his entire career. And to cap everything off, Jason Terry has provided virtually nothing off the bench. A lack of chemistry is certainly a big issue right now and you wonder if Read more

NBA Handicapping: Denver Nuggets pretty much can't stop anyone

11.18.2013     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver at Oklahoma City -9 O/U 210.5

Denver's had a tough go of it on the defensive end of the floor allowing 100+ points in six of its first nine games. The only teams that failed to top 100 were Utah (30th offensive efficiency), Sacramento (21st) and the LA Lakers (24th).

"Right now, I think poor," he said. "The last two games, we've taken a step back, especially the latter part of the games, the fourth quarters, where we've given up 30-point fourth quarters. You can't do that and expect to win. So, when we are able to get back, we'll show in a film session what it looks like. When we are able to get back on the floor and practice, a lot of the emphasis will be on the defensive end."

We've got to get better as a team defensively," J.J. Hickson said. "It's a process. Definitely our help-side defense (needs

Brooklyn at Sacramento +3.5 O/U 195
Recommendation: Sacramento

The Nets aren’t any good, yet the betting markets continue to price Brooklyn as an Eastern Conference contender.  Jason Kidd’s squad isn’t worried about getting wins in November; they’re worried about staying healthy for April and May.

The Nets are 0-3 SU and ATS on the highway this year, losing outright as a favorite each time (at Cleveland, Orlando and Washington, not exactly a who’s who of elite teams).  Their only two wins this year came against winless Utah and by one point against Miami on a night where the Nets were jacked up and Miami played lethargic basketball throughout.

Point guard Deron Williams is still nursing another sore ankle.  His quote speaks volumes about the Nets right now: “We're just learning to play together. We didn't have everybody healthy for training camp and we're all coming together and trying to win a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Fast pace the highlight of early season play

11.12.2013     10:03 AM     Otto Sports     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There is an early season trend emerging in the NBA right now that is worth of some attention. Obviously this can be a little skewed because of the short sample size but consider we've got six teams right now playing at over 100 possessions per game:

LA Lakers (102.77)
Minnesota (102.52)
Golden State (102.37
Philadelphia (101.46)
Dallas (101.17)
Houston (100.45)

Three more teams may as well be playing at that 100 possession level too:
LA Clippers (99.94)
Atlanta (99.84)
Orlando (99.83)

In 2012 not a single team averaged over 100 possessions per game for the season. Houston led the league at 98.64 which would rank 14th so far this season. No surprise then that we’ve seen an uptick in scoring league wide. In 2012 the average game saw 195.9 points scored. So far in 2013 the average game has seen 198.5 points scored.

Whether this type of pace will continue through the season is anyone’s guess at this point. I would imagine it’s highly unlikely, especially as we get deeper into the dog days and grind towards the playoffs. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue to see this type of Read more

NBA Betting News: LeBron not pleased with Heat's defense

Milwaukee at Miami -14.5 O/U 197.5

The Miami Heat have had no trouble putting the ball in the basket with 100 points or more is all seven games this season. But LeBron James isn't pleased with the team's defense, going so far as to say it has been "shit" thus far. Heading into tonight's game against Milwaukee, the Heat rank 25th in the NBA in defensive efficiency. Note that the total was bet down from 199.5 to its current number of 197.5.

Minnesota +6.5 at LA Clippers O/U 210
Recommendation: Minnesota

My clients and I cashed an easy wire-to-wire winner with the T-wolves in New York last Sunday, a game where they were underdogs, yet led by 21 after one quarter, cruising to a nine-point road win.  We cashed another winner with Minnesota in their one point loss at Cleveland the following night.

And, after that loss and a bad home loss to the Warriors on Wednesday, we cashed with Minnesota against Dallas on Friday.  And last night, Minnesota provided another right side cash for us in their wire-to-wire blowout against the Lakers.  That’s four winners supporting one team in the last ten days, and I expect us to cash another winner with them tonight!

Make no mistake about it – Minnesota is pretty darn good this year, in sharp contrast to where they’ve been since Kevin Garnett got dealt to the Celtics prior to the 2008 season.  They’ve got three Read more

NFL Handicapping: Knicks' struggles lead to players-only pow-wow

11.08.2013     11:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's see, there's the 1-3 start, the loss of Tyson Chandler (4-6 weeks), and a 102-97 home loss to the Charlotte Bobcats. Sounds about time for the New York Knicks to dial up the old players-only meeting. The Knicks are 3-point road favorites against Charlotte tonight.

"We shut the door after the game and talked it out a little bit and tried to figure out what was happening and what was going on," Carmelo Anthony said before the team's morning shootaround at the Time Warner Cable Arena. "We just weren't competing the way we know we can compete."

"We've got to want it," he said. "We've got to want to do it. We've got to believe in ourselves. And right now, we're playing like we don't even believe in ourselves. It's just effort. That's the message."

NBA Gambling: Bobcats say tanking not an option

11.01.2013     12:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan assured everyone the his squad won't be "tanking" at any point this season in order to secure better odds/position for next year's draft.

"It's not guaranteed (the player) you are going to get is going to be that star anyway," Jordan said. "I did read that certain teams are thinking about doing it. But I'm not one of them. So let's alleviate that conversation."

"We're focused on what we're trying to do," Jordan said. "I think the direction we're moving is positive. ... It is baby steps. Every now and again you have a hiccup. But I must admit that were headed in the right direction and I'm very happy with that."
