NBA Handicapping: Breaking down the Eastern Conference

02.12.2013     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

So many weird things have been happening in the NBA’s Eastern Conference in recent days, that I got to wondering what the standings looked like since the turn of the year. That time period would encapsulate the Knicks cooling off a bit…Washington heating up…and all sorts of various storylines.

Let’s take a look...

NBA EAST IN 2013 (only counting games since New Year's)

1…Miami 13-6

2…Brooklyn 14-7

3…Chicago, Indiana, Boston 13-8

Miami’s still at three-quarter speed…yet has the best record in the conference in this short sample. Brooklyn hasn’t played as well as that record would suggest the past several days…but they did win tonight in Indiana to take over the theoretical #2 seed in this time frame. The next three teams have had multiple nights where had kicked things into playoff gear. Ironically, all three lost tonight! Chicago, Indiana, and Boston were 13-7 in 2013 until falling Read more

NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics in tough spot after overtime win over Denver

02.11.2013     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Boston -3.5 at Charlotte O/U 193

The Boston Celtics are on a roll, winners of seven straight (7-0 ATS) heading into tonight's game at Charlotte. It'll be interesting to see how head coach Doc Rivers handles tonight's minutes after the Celtics beat Denver in overtime last night. Paul Pierce played 54 minutes while Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry logged 42+.

"I’ll let you know after the game [Monday]," Rivers said. "I mean Paul played 54 minutes, and he’s the guy that I’m most concerned with to be honest. And they just played so hard. ... If we have to rest guys, play them shorter minutes tomorrow -- the only way I can do it is by my eyes. You’ll never know how guys feel until [Monday]."

"I told Doc I wasn't build for this s--- and I don't know what the hell he thought," Garnett quipped. "But I Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Brooklyn Nets at Indiana Pacers

Brooklyn at Indiana -8.5 O/U 183
Recommendation: Indiana

Brooklyn is falling apart before our eyes.  They’ve lost six of nine, snapping any momentum they had gained from their strong run when PJ Carlesimo initially took over for Avery Johnson as the head coach.  The worst part of the Nets recent decline has been their complete lack of effort once they fall behind.  Their six losses during this skid have come by 25, 15, 9, 20, 13 and 24 points.  In other words, when things start to go south for this team, they tend to go south in a hurry!

Nets shooting guard Joe Johnson doesn’t sound too convinced that his team will be able to turn it around on the second night of back-to-backs on the road against an elite level foe.  Shooting guard Joe Johnson: “I don't know what it is, but you know, it just seems when a team makes a run on us, man, it just takes the air out of us. It shouldn't be that way. We should be able to respond, but it hasn't Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks and Nets outclassed by Western Conference contenders

02.11.2013     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

You don’t want to read too much into a generic February Sunday of NBA basketball. But it was a discouraging day for fans of the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, who were both outclassed significantly by Western Conference contenders.

*New York (-3.5) lost to the LA Clippers 102-88 (missing expectations by 17.5 points)

*Brooklyn (+2) lost to San Antonio 111-86 (missing expectations by 23 points)

It was already bad enough for the Nets that they were home underdogs to the Spurs on a night when both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili were out with injuries. Brooklyn got annihilated by the shorthanded Spurs! San Antonio won the second half 60-29.

I’m not going to run the full boxes. A few quick keys from Gotham's day-night doubleheader…

LA Clippers 102, New York 88

2-Point Percentage: Clippers 60%, New York 51%

3-Point Shooting: Clippers 10/28, New York 7/23

Rebounds: Clippers 43, New York Read more

NBA Handicapping: Wizards continue to cover games thanks to solid defense

02.11.2013     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Washington at Milwaukee -4 O/U 197

Article on Washington's transformation since the return of John Wall – most notably on the defensive end of the floor. In Wall's 16 games, the Wizards are 9-7 SU, 13-3 ATS and 5-11 O/U.

"We're just playing hard," Wizards forward Trevor Ariza said after Friday's 89-74 win over Brooklyn. "We know that it's going to take a team effort to win every night, so that's what we've got to do defensively and offensively. We know that we're up there in the defensive category, and we want to stay there. The best bet is to lock down."

NBA Betting News: Pretty much everyone is questionable for Clippers-Heat game

Blake Griffin (hamstring) Questionable
Jamal Crawford (shoulder) Questionable
Chauncey Billups (foot) Probable

Not surprising, most sportsbooks took the game off the board earlier this morning. The Heat opened as 5-point favorites.

NBA Gambling Trends: Chicago Bulls in back-to-back spot vs. Utah Jazz

02.08.2013     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Chicago at Utah -4 O/U 185.5

Taking a look at how teams fare when playing at Denver and Utah on back-to-back nights – the situation for the Bulls tonight after getting blown out against the Nuggets, 128-96, last night. When teams play in Denver and then travel to Utah with no rest, they are 7-22 SU and 13-15-1 ATS. Also note that seven of those last eight games went under the total. And for future reference, when teams play in Salt Lake City and then travel to Denver in a B2B, they are 5-9 SU and 7-7 ATS with five of the last six going under the total. As for the Bulls, they've allowed 100+ point in back-to-back games. When that occurs, the Bulls are 2-8 O/U in that third game dating back to 2010.

NBA Betting Update: Afflalo returns as Magic look to snap 11-game losing streak

02.08.2013     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly

Orlando at Cleveland -6.5 O/U 197

The Orlando Magic put out one doozy of a lineup in their last game against the Clippers. The starting five featured E’Twaun Moore, Jameer Nelson, Moe Harkless, Andrew Nicholson, and Nikola Vucevic. Their best performance came from rookie Kyle O'Quinn (Norfolk State) who in 20 minutes scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards. But in the end it wasn't enough as the Clippers – who were without Blake Griffin and Chris Paul – came away with a spread covering 86-76 win. Orlando has lost 11 in a row (1-10 ATS) but expects to field a stronger lineup tonight against Cleveland. Aaron Afflalo and DeQuan Jones are probable and JJ Read more

NBA Gambling News: Gasol out, Howard questionable as Lakers face Celtics

02.07.2013     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
LA Lakers at Boston -2.5 O/U 196

Injuries galore for tonight's Lakers-Celtics matchup in Boston. Kobe Bryant has been dealing with an elbow injury which is like correlated to his recent barrage of assists – though with Howard out, Kobe's been forced to shoot more and the results haven't been great (21-57, .368 FGs last 3 games). Dwight Howard (shoulder) remains in a perpetual state of being questionable despite Kobe urging him to suck it up and play. And Pau Gasol is out with a foot injury. Meanwhile, Boston's Rajon Rondo is out for the season but the Celtics have won and covered five straight in his absence.

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota hopes to avoid another slow start vs. San Antonio

02.06.2013     11:24 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
San Antonio -4.5 at Minnesota O/U 198.5

Minnesota's Rick Adelman called out his team for their poor start against Portland on Monday. The Trail Blazers jumped out to a 25-18 lead after the first quarter and held a 49-38 advantage at half. The Timberwolves fought back and hung 40 in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as Portland came out on top 100-98. Minnesota has lost 12 of 14 (3-10-1 ATS) heading into tonight’s ESPN matchup against San Antonio.

"If we are just going through the motions, which it seemed like we were doing, it's just not going to happen," Adelman said. "We have to look at the personnel and look at why aren't we doing it."

"We are not good enough right now to come out and think we can just ease into a game," Adelman said. "I hope it's a lesson learned. We have to Read more
