NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics are the Los Angeles Lakers of the East!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submmitted by Stat Intelligence

You wouldn’t know this by the won-lost records. Sure, both teams are disappointments. But, Boston is only a game below .500 at 20-21 after losing Tuesday night in Cleveland, while the Lakers have sunk to an astonishing 17-24. The Lakers are now a longshot to make the playoffs unless the teams in front of them stay leapfrog-able (our current "word of the week"). Boston is still in the Eastern brackets, three games clear of the nearest team to catching them.

Yet…

Versus the Weaker Eastern Conference:

Boston: .500 (13-13)

LA Lakers: .500 (8-8)

Versus the Top 5 in the West:

Boston: 1-5 for a .167 winning percentage

LA Lakers 2-7 for a .222 winning percentage

The Lakers are 1-2 against current #6 Denver, but Boston hasn’t had to play them yet

Both Won at Home Against:

Portland

Phoenix

NBA Handicapping: Despite offensive surge, New Orleans Hornets thinking defense

01.23.2013     01:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans at San Antonio -8.5 O/U 194

The New Orleans Hornets have seen an uptick in their offensive production of late scoring 111, 112, and 114 in three of their last four games. But head coach Monty Williams isn’t buying the hype. As Williams pointed out, Monday's 114-105 win over Sacramento marked the first time in 16 games the Hornets won while allowing 100 points or more. Taking it a step further, when allowing 100+, New Orleans in 5-12 ATS. When allowing less than 100, a rock solid 17-7 ATS.

“We’ve given up over a hundred in a number of games, and that to me is not a good sign,” Williams said. “We are 1-16 when we give up 100 points. (The first win) happened Monday. I’m more concerned with defense. When we score 100, we give up a lot of points. For us, if we can score between 97 and 95 and hold teams to 90, that for me Read more

NBA Handicapping: Hunter makes coaching debut for train wreck Phoenix Suns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We mentioned this article on today's Sportsmemo Podcast with Erin Rynning. It discusses Phoenix's decision to promote Lindsey Hunter to head coach as well as assistant Dan Majerle's departure. As for Hunter, rumor has it the Suns are going to play more up-tempo. Of course there has also been talk about becoming more defensive-minded. Note that the Suns haven't played since last Thursday.

NBA Handicapping: Paul listed as a game time decision vs. Oklahoma City

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma City -1 at LA Clippers O/U 200

Los Angeles' Chris Paul (knee) will be a game time decision for tonight's game against Oklahoma City. Following last night's loss to Golden State, Paul felt that he did more harm than good in terms of trying to play at less than 100 percent. He was noticeably limping throughout the game. The Clippers are 3-0 SU/ATS without Paul this season.

"I'm just mad because I feel like we let a game get away," Paul said. "I didn't feel like I could do what I wanted to do. Me being out there probably hurt us more than it helped us. I feel bad in that regard."

Since we’re trying to get a read on where the Los Angeles Lakers stand in the big picture right now, and we just updated the estimated Power Ratings earlier tonight, this seemed like a great time to use those ratings to get a sense of the Lakers' current level of play.

We can take recent victory margins...look at the opponent’s rating...adjust for home court...and abracadabra, we have a quick and dirty estimate for the level the Lakers are playing at.

Dwight Howard returned to the lineup five games ago. That’s ideal because it will give us a median!

The Lakers were 17 points better than Cleveland (72), which equates to an 89

The Lakers were 13 points better than Milwaukee (78), which equates to a 91

The Lakers were 12 points WORSE than Miami (85), which equates to a 73

The Lakers were 2 points WORSE than Toronto (76), which equates to a 74

The Lakers were 9 points WORSE than Chicago (79), which equates to a Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Houston Rockets at Charlotte Bobcats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston -7.5 at Charlotte O/U 208.5
Recommendation: Houston

The Rockets are slumping mightily, losers of seven straight games.  They play at the quickest pace in the NBA, and coinciding with a rough schedule their energy has been sapped.  Six of their seven games on their losing streak have been on the road, while sandwiched around the Clippers.  In all, 13 of their last 18 games have been played on the highway.  Today will finally give them an opportunity to win after their discouraging loss Saturday night against Minnesota.  Of course, the Bobcats are the worst team in the NBA and they’ve continued to struggle covering the number.  Their spread record is under 40%, which is a continued pattern from last season.  The Bobcats are the worst defensive team in the NBA, and the Rockets should garner much easier looks in this game.  Key in this game is the Bobcats sport the second worst three-point defense in the Association.  They allow Read more

NBA Handicapping: Schedule has Houston Rockets running on fumes

You’re about to see what fatigue looks like statistically!

Last week we talked about the brutal schedule stretch that was coming up for the Houston Rockets. They had just defeated the Los Angeles Lakers. But, they were about to embark on a two-week odyssey that would see them play two different four-game-in-five-night stretches with the vast majority of action on the road.

We then suggested the team hit a wall in the fourth quarter in New Orleans the next night (when they were outscored 29-10 to blow a big lead). Then, we monitored developments through the week as the Rockets continued to lose. Tonight’s 105-95 loss at Indiana continued the story. And, I’ve come up with a way that may be the best illustration of what happens to the Rockets when they get tired (for other teams, it may show up in other categories).

First, a quick review of the gauntlet to this point…

NBA Betting Trends: Will Phoenix Suns see boost following Gentry's departure?

01.18.2013     11:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier today, the Phoenix Suns "mutually agreed to part ways" with head coach Alvin Gentry. The Suns are in the midst of a horrific 2-13 slide (6-8-1 ATS). Gentry's departure marks the fourth mid-season coaching change. A small sample, but worth noting that the other three saw an immediate boost in success following the switch. Let’s take a look.

Los Angeles Lakers: Mike Brown was fired on November 9 and the Lakers won five of their next six (4-2 ATS) under Bernie Bickerstaff and Mike D'Antoni.

Brooklyn Nets: Avery Johnson was fired on December 29. PJ Carlesimo took over and the Nets have responded, winning nine of 11 (6-4-1 ATS) heading into tonight's contest against Atlanta.

Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks parted ways with Scott Skiles and promoted Jim Boylan. Under Boylan, Milwaukee has won four of six (4-2 ATS).

NBA Handicapper Betting Preview: Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers

Miami +2 at LA Lakers O/U 206.5
Recommendation: Miami

Eric Spoelstra’s squad really struggled to find their a-game after Christmas; quite frankly looking bored for extended stretches.  They entered last night’s game at Golden State in the midst of a 2-8 ATS slide, including SU losses to the Pistons, Bucks, Bulls, Pacers, Jazz and Blazers during that span.

No surprise, then, that we’re seeing the Heat in a rare underdog role tonight -- the once prohibitive price to support the Heat in the betting markets has declined into a far more reasonable range.

Miami’s lone previous try as an underdog this year?  They won outright at Denver without Dwayne Wade in the lineup.  And it’s surely worth noting that the Heat have four SU wins in five tries playing on the second night of back-2-backs; a team worthy of support in this spot.  Let’s not forget that in last night’s blowout win over the Warriors, head coach Read more

NBA Handicapping: Inverted Thinking on NBA Back-to-Backs

When I first started playing around with fatigue situations in the NBA eons ago, my kneejerk reaction was to assume that tired teams would hang tough for awhile, before fading from fatigue in the fourth quarter. I had been assuming they’d rejuvenate in the hours between games, then run out of gas in crunch time.

In actual practice, the world was much more complicated than that. But, it was a complication that got rewarded once first quarter and first half propositions became more readily available.

Tonight’s results show you that, counter-intuitively, fatigue can be something that shows up early in a game, before being overcome by motivated teams with youth or deep benches.

There were fully SEVEN teams tonight in the NBA dealing with back-to-back disadvantages. By that, I mean that they played Tuesday night while their opponents were resting. All seven failed to cover their first quarter spreads.
