NBA Betting Trends: Washington Wizards rip off 10 straight pointspread covers

01.28.2013     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sacramento at Washington -7.5 O/U 201.5

When you cover 10 games in a row – and sport the best spread record in the league (26-14-2 ATS) – oddsmakers and the betting markets tend to take notice. From October 30 to January 23, the Washington Wizards were favored in three games, two of which by a single point. Last Friday, the Wiz played host to Minnesota and closed as a 6.5-point favorite – a game they easily covered, 114-101. Following another win and pointspread cover against the Bulls on Saturday, Washington finds itself a season-high 7.5-point home favorite against Sacramento tonight.

During their 10-game ATS streak, the Wizards have beat the market by margins of 14, 6.5, 3, 9.5, 5, 14.5, 3.5, 27.5, 13, and 13.5.

NBA Gambling Notes: Orlando Magic continue to lose, go OVER the total

01.28.2013     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Orlando Magic have lost 16 of their last 18 games (7-11 ATS) in part because the defense has been non-existent. Since January 14, which marked the return of Glen Davis, the Magic have allowed 111.6 points per 100 possessions. Davis hinted that a defensive turnaround won't happen overnight. That means one of the strongest current trends in the NBA could continue – 14 of Orlando's last 18 games have gone OVER the total.

"When I get a rhythm back and get to where I need to play at, I think it'll put the team at peace," Davis said. "Everybody had different roles for a while, and now we've been trying to figure out how we're going to fit those roles back in. We've got some things to smooth out before we get on this roll.

"I think we've just got to rearrange those pieces again. We're on the verge of doing that. I think that we had a good practice [Saturday] of getting the feel, getting the rhythm for everybody."

NBA Handicapping: Back-to-back wins and pointspread covers for Los Angeles Lakers

Through Game One of ABC’s Sunday doubleheader today, you got the sense that the Boston Celtics season…and maybe an era…was coming to an end.  In Game Two, the first meaningful evidence that the season had finally begun for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Numbers and notes from those games, plus other important developments on a busy NBA Sunday…

Boston 100, Miami 98 (in double overtime)

2-Point Percentage: Miami 45%, Boston 46%

3-Point Shooting: Miami 5/23, Boston 5/20

Free Throws: Miami 15/20, Boston 23/27

Rebounds: Miami 53, Boston 46

Turnovers: Miami 20, Boston 14

Dramatic game to watch, though the cloud hanging over the event made it one that few could really enjoy. Boston won the day. But they also found out they’ll be without star point guard Rajon Rondo for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. They had been in recent trouble anyway with their current roster, slumping down to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks 5-6 since Amare's return, Carmelo and JR ice cold

The Knicks have kind of fallen off the media radar in recent days. The Lakers soap opera grabbed most of the NBA headlines. Boston’s losing streak started getting some attention. To the degree New York was noticed, it was for beating Boston on TNT the other night…or for winning an afternoon game in London.

Saturday night's 97-80 loss at Philadelphia was notable for a few reasons…

*It was the 11th game back for Amare Stoudemire. Are you aware New York has a 5-6 record in those 11 games?

*Carmelo Anthony was 11 of 28 shooting...hich comes after going 11 of 29 shooting the game before...and is 59 of 156 shooting (.378) over his last seven games.

*J.R. Smith was 0 of 8 shooting...which comes after going 3 of 16 shooting the game before...and is 40 of 133 (.301) shooting the last seven games.

*Add that up, and you get 99 of 289 from two major scoring threats over seven games for a composite mark of .342.

*The KRIB Index can be Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers

Utah +5 at LA Lakers O/U 205
Recommendation: Utah

I’m a bit disappointed that I haven’t been more aggressive in fading the Lakers during their rough and turmoil filled season but I plan on correcting that tonight with a recommendation on the Utah Jazz as road underdogs.

After watching the Lakers lose once again in Memphis, and hearing the post game comments from Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard – all three sounded negative and uninspired – there is little to no reason to support this squad, especially in the role of a medium-sized favorite. They aren’t playing any sort of defense and team chemistry is completely non-existent right now.  Howard left the game against the Grizzlies with a shoulder injury but is expected to play tonight. Either way, it looks like Howard has checked out mentally as his effort level and competitiveness have been lacking for the majority of the season.

LA is 2-8 SU in their last 10 games and that makes Read more

NBA Handicapping: Houston Rockets have lost nine straight against the spread

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston at New Orleans -3 O/U 200.5

Back on the road, the Houston Rockets attempt to snap a nine-game losing streak against the spread tonight in New Orleans. Their lone straight up win during that span was a come-from-behind effort at Charlotte. Like most struggling teams, the root of the problem for the Rockets appears to be a lack of defense.

“When we don’t get stops, it doesn’t allow us to get out on transition, where we’re best,” Parsons said. “It should start on the defensive end, all of us, individually and collectively. Focus in on that.”

“You’ve got to start off by protecting the paint,” McHale said. “The best way to protect the paint is having two 7-foot-2 guys who can block shots all over the place. That’s hard to find, so the next best way is to find Read more

I mentioned last night that several storylines we’ve been following would be in play on the Wednesday night NBA schedule. For the most part, all of those storylines continue unabated. Let’s start with the third game on the Nevada rotation schedule, because it’s barely worth mentioning that Charlotte is still horrible (they lost and failed to cover vs. Atlanta), and Miami is still coasting until the games matter (they had to go overtime to beat Toronto).

*Detroit continued its solid play, losing by only three points as a 6-point underdog in Chicago even though they were playing on night two of a back-to-back. The final score was 85-82. Home court advantage is worth three points typically in the NBA. So, that grades out as the Pistons being even with Chicago. And, THAT’S consistent with what we’ve been talking about lately with the Pistons’ improvement. They’re still playing like a team in the low 80’s (or high 70’s tonight in a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics are the Los Angeles Lakers of the East!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submmitted by Stat Intelligence

You wouldn’t know this by the won-lost records. Sure, both teams are disappointments. But, Boston is only a game below .500 at 20-21 after losing Tuesday night in Cleveland, while the Lakers have sunk to an astonishing 17-24. The Lakers are now a longshot to make the playoffs unless the teams in front of them stay leapfrog-able (our current "word of the week"). Boston is still in the Eastern brackets, three games clear of the nearest team to catching them.

Yet…

Versus the Weaker Eastern Conference:

Boston: .500 (13-13)

LA Lakers: .500 (8-8)

Versus the Top 5 in the West:

Boston: 1-5 for a .167 winning percentage

LA Lakers 2-7 for a .222 winning percentage

The Lakers are 1-2 against current #6 Denver, but Boston hasn’t had to play them yet

Both Won at Home Against:

Portland

Phoenix

Houston

NBA Handicapping: Despite offensive surge, New Orleans Hornets thinking defense

01.23.2013     01:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans at San Antonio -8.5 O/U 194

The New Orleans Hornets have seen an uptick in their offensive production of late scoring 111, 112, and 114 in three of their last four games. But head coach Monty Williams isn’t buying the hype. As Williams pointed out, Monday's 114-105 win over Sacramento marked the first time in 16 games the Hornets won while allowing 100 points or more. Taking it a step further, when allowing 100+, New Orleans in 5-12 ATS. When allowing less than 100, a rock solid 17-7 ATS.

“We’ve given up over a hundred in a number of games, and that to me is not a good sign,” Williams said. “We are 1-16 when we give up 100 points. (The first win) happened Monday. I’m more concerned with defense. When we score 100, we give up a lot of points. For us, if we can score between 97 and 95 and hold teams to 90, that for me Read more

NBA Handicapping: Hunter makes coaching debut for train wreck Phoenix Suns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We mentioned this article on today's Sportsmemo Podcast with Erin Rynning. It discusses Phoenix's decision to promote Lindsey Hunter to head coach as well as assistant Dan Majerle's departure. As for Hunter, rumor has it the Suns are going to play more up-tempo. Of course there has also been talk about becoming more defensive-minded. Note that the Suns haven't played since last Thursday.
