NBA Handicapping: Portland seeks revenge vs. Houston

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston at Portland -3 O/U 212

Portland has had an eye on tonight's nationally televised (TNT) matchup vs. Houston. The Rockets won in the Rose Garden earlier this season, 116-106, on the strength of 54% shooting and 62 points from James Harden and Dwight Howard. The win was even more impressive considering Houston was playing the second of back-to-backs and third road game in four nights. For tonight’s game, both teams come in well rested with the Rockets last playing on Sunday and Trail Blazers on Monday.

“I think everybody is motivated just because we lost to them before,” Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said.

“You’d like to say no, but the fact that it’s a national TV game, there’s only two — it’s the only game in town that night, the whole country is watching —

NBA Betting: Detroit Pistons trending OVER the total

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I cashed a ticket on the Detroit Pistons over the total last night (as did a number of the Sportsmemo Handicappers) and it wouldn’t surprise me to continue to see support for Detroit games to go over the total. And there’s a very solid reason; they’re a playing at a much faster pace than their season to date numbers would suggest.

My suspicion is the market views Detroit as a very mediocre offensive team especially when looking at their seasonal numbers. The Pistons rank in the middle of the pack in terms of points per game (16th) and field goal percentage (15th) while posting dreadful numbers from three point range (28th) and from the charity stripe (30th). If we dig a little deeper their advanced offensive efficiency leading up to December actually was a respectable 102.3, on par with the likes of the Pacers, Warriors, T-Wolves and Thunder. But they were playing at an average pace of just 95.37. Since December started we’ve seen a much fast tempo from the Pistons. Their offensive efficiency is still relatively the same at 102.7 but their average pace has jumped all the way up to 100.34 which actually lead the league this month.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers

Phoenix +3 at LA Lakers O/U 206
Recommendation: Phoenix

It’s going to be a process before Kobe Bryant gets comfortable in this Lakers lineup.  His quote following the Lakers 12 point home loss to lowly Toronto in his season debut: “My rhythm is completely out of sync.”

Head coach Mike D’Antoni agreed wholeheartedly: “He'll work through his issues, and again, they're baby steps. He's coming back from a tough injury, and he's coming off eight months ... he is human, I think. We have to understand it's going to take the other players around him. It's going to be a little painful at first.”

Kobe Bryant is worth at least two or three points to this spread, but the Lakers are probably at least two or three points WORSE with him back on the floor – for now – as they adjust to new rotations and get their superstar acclimated to game speed.  Let’s not forget the excellent team chemistry this team had without Kobe on the floor for the first five weeks of the season – LA overachieved both SU and ATS.  That makes the Lake-show an easy ‘bet Read more

NBA Handicapping: Boston assistant has team playing solid defense

12.06.2013     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Offensively, it isn't always pretty for the Boston Celtics, but they've managed to stick around in games (11-9 ATS) thanks to an under-the-radar defense. The Celtics are 7th in the NBA in points allowed (96.8) and 8th in defensive efficiency (100.5). The players credit assistant Ron Adams who held the same post under Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau.

"From where we started from and where we're at now, is a big difference," Sullinger said. "Especially after the first couple games, I just thought it was going to go down hill from there. Guys really locked in. As a team we came together and understood that we have to play as a team to win basketball games. Defensively, we're making the right rotations defensively for us to put ourselves in a position to win."

"The little things, have a hand up, make the pass harder, help-side, close out on shooters ... the extra effort parts that make the defense better."

NBA Handicapping: Take a look at the Leastern Conference

I’ve heard a lot this year about how bad the Eastern Conference is in the NBA, once you get past league powers Miami and Indiana. What I haven’t heard much about is how to differentiate all the teams below the Heat and Pacers.

Thought it might be fun to kind of invert our occasional “SuperLeague” strategies and see what’s happened this year when “the bottom 13” in the East have played each other. The raw standings overall might not be a fair assessment because not everybody has played the same number of games against the West. And, some teams have had only one game against the Eastern powers while Charlotte, Toronto, and Orlando have already played Miami and Indiana three times.

What you see below are won-lost records for everyone in the East but Miami and Indiana counting only the games played within that subset.

Detroit 7-3

Chicago 5-2

NBA Handicapping: League-wide pace slows slightly, scoring remains up

12.04.2013     12:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re now a couple weeks removed from when I first took a look at the pace of NBA play and it’s a good time to revisit and see how things are shaping up. Back in mid-November we had six teams playing at over 100 possessions per game:

LA Lakers (102.77)
Minnesota (102.52)
Golden State (102.37
Philadelphia (101.46)
Dallas (101.17)
Houston (100.45)

As it stands now only two teams can still boast that type of tempo as Philadelphia (102.07) and Minnesota (101.03) continue to run with reckless abandon. The other four teams have slowed down a bit and we can filter out their possession numbers since that last blog was posted.

Houston (97.70)
LA Lakers (97.36)
Dallas (96.49)
Golden State (96.35)

The scoring, however, hasn’t seen a decrease league wide since we first looked at these numbers. Back in mid-November the average game had seen 198.5 points; an uptick from 2012’s season average of 195.9 points. Since the time of that blog game scoring has actually seen a small uptick to 198.9 points on average. To date overs are hitting 51.7% across the board compared to 2012 at 50.5%.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma City +2.5 at Portland O/U 205
Recommendation: Oklahoma City

Here’s the quote from Pacers head coach Frank Vogel, following Portland’s four-point win over Indiana on Monday: “They made big shots all game long. Hopefully that's what it's going to take to beat this team – making impossible shot after impossible shot."

Portland isn’t the best team in the Western Conference, and their 15-3 start to the season might well be their high point of the campaign.  I’m not saying the Blazers are bad, but I am saying that this team isn’t going to hit contested jumpers to the tune of 105 points per game average for the entirety of the season.  The Blazers have only one way to go from here, from a SU and ATS perspective, and that’s down!

Oklahoma City has come on like a freight train since their sluggish start to the season, reeling off eight straight wins (6-2 ATS) coming into tonight.  That stretch Read more

NBA Gambling: Let's all gather 'round and rewatch Toronto's collapse vs. Golden State

12.04.2013     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
If you had a bet on Toronto last night this will probably sting a little. The Raptors jumped out to a 36-19 lead over the Warriors and led by that same margin at halftime with GS a 9-point favorite in the second half (adjusted +8). In the third quarter, Toronto led by as much as 27 and heading into the fourth remained up 88-70. Then the freakin’ wheels came off. The progression of Pinnacle's live wagering tells all you need to know about the total meltdown that took place. Golden State was at its peak +16, followed by +13.5, +12, +8, +3.5, -2.5, and finally -9. All told, the Warriors outscored the Raptors 42-15 in the fourth to not only win the game but also cover the closing game number of -8!

NBA Gambling News: Brooklyn's mess of a season continues

12.04.2013     07:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another no-show for the Brooklyn Nets last night as they were smoked on their home court by Denver, 111-87. Now reports are out the head coach Jason Kidd and assistant Lawrence Frank apparently weren't on the same page and Frank will now have a reduced role with the team. Looking ahead, Brooklyn's schedule is favorable (tough to say for a 5-13 team) with games against New York, Milwaukee, Boston, Detroit, Washington, and Philadelphia (twice).

"This is the decision that I had to make, and we made it and we move on," Kidd told reporters before the Nets were routed 111-87 at home by the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. "This is my decision in the sense of what I had to do. It's about basketball. That's it."

"[We're] soul-searching here," Kevin Garnett said after the loss. "We were trying to figure out how to patch this thing up, how to get this thing together; there's a lot of moving parts to this. ... I don't think anyone around here is having fun, and losing is definitely not

NBA Handicapping: 76ers continue to play fast despite glaring deficiencies

12.03.2013     12:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're looking for a blueprint of how to trend over the total in the NBA, read this. The Philadelphia 76ers are 13-5 O/U, play at the fastest pace in the league (102.8), and rank 26th in defensive efficiency (104.4).

"When you choose to play at a pace that we're trying to play at, the problems can really start there," Brown said following practice yesterday at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We turn it over a lot, and they run at us. We take quick, bad shots and they run at us. A lot of our transition defensive problems are coming from turnovers and quick, bad shots, because we're so adamant on playing at a speed. Somewhere out there, down the road now, there needs to be a better understanding for how you responsibly play that style of play. Then, when you just get into basic halfcourt defense, it's a whole other story about accountability, define a team, all those things. And me doing a better job coaching some rotations. But our defense is most definitely a problem, and I think some of that spins
