NBA Betting Notes: Average minutes per game for starters

03.06.2012     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Good article from denverstiffs.com breaking down the NBA's crazy schedule and what teams are doing, if anything at all, to budget the minutes of their starters. In terms of teams in the playoff race, San Antonio’s starters average the fewest (27.48 per game) while Memphis' average the most (33.34).

NBA Handicapping: Fatigued and banged up, Dallas plays host to New York

New York at Dallas -2.5 O/U 191.5

Tough spot for Dallas after losing a hard fought game to Oklahoma City last night. Veterans Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion and Jason Terry all logged 36+ minutes. More concerning is the status of center Brendan Hawyood who sprained his ankle in the loss. Haywood is listed as doubtful leaving the Mavs extremely thin in the front court.

The loss was the Mavs' sixth in eight games and tonight's game, the sixth during this nine-in-12 stretch, is the last before Dallas embarks on its lone back-to-back-to-back of the season starting Thursday at Phoenix.

NBA Handicapping: Miami Heat expect to have Bosh back in the lineup

New Jersey at Miami

The Miami Heat return home after back-to-back losses to close out a short west coast road trip. Chris Bosh expects to return to the lineup after missing three games due to a death in the family. Head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that Bosh's absence hurt the team on both ends of the floor.

“No question about it, Chris Bosh is a major component to what we do on both ends of the court,” Spoelstra said. “That’s why we don’t listen to anybody when they talk about Chris’s importance or value. He’s one of the best players in this league, but more importantly, he has a great impact on how we play, and he settles us.”

NBA Handicapping: Chicago's Rose remembers Indiana's postgame celebration

Indiana at Chicago -7 O/U 189.5

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has forgotten the loss to Indiana back in late January. The Pacers not only won at the United Center but weren't shy about celebrating the accomplishment after the game.

"I'll never forget how they celebrated just from winning this game," Rose told reporters after the loss in January. "I can't wait to play them again."

"I haven't forgotten about anything," Rose said Sunday night after a win over the Philadelphia 76ers. "I remember that.

Sunday NBA Free Betting Pick: Sacramento Kings at Phoenix Suns

Sacramento +5.5 at Phoenix O/U 204.5
Recommendation: Sacramento

Sacramento travels to Phoenix tonight for a showdown of two of the lesser Western Conference teams. Following the dismissal of head coach Paul Westphal, the Kings have gradually played better under Keith Smart. This really isn’t a surprise as the players genuinely disliked Westphal. In addition, they’ve caught a spark of late with Isaiah Thomas running the point guard position. The Kings have pushed the pace more with Thomas at the helm and have created more ball movement on offense. There’s certainly talent on this basketball team, and one could argue they’ll have the talent edge in this matchup. Meanwhile, the Suns are off a pleasing win over the LA Clipper on ESPN Friday night. They just haven’t proven themselves to be marginally better than even the lower-tier teams in the NBA this season. In fact, the Suns are just 2-5 ATS when favored by five points or more. The Suns were beaten by Read more

Indiana 8.5ov-165
LA Lakers 12un-175

NBA Handicapping: Los Angeles Lakers looks to take advantage of schedule

Sacramento at LA Lakers -10/5 O/U 195.5

Article in the LA Times about the Lakers’ schedule in March. Eleven of LA's 17 games will be against teams that are currently .500 or worse including four games against New Orleans, Washington and Detroit. And there are only three back-to-back situations.

"If we play the right way, we can,” Lakers forward Pau Gasol said. “Obviously, there is a potential in doing so, but there is also a potential of messing up and taking things for granted and being in trouble."

NBA Betting Alert: Minnesota's Love (flu) questionable vs. Phoenix

Minnesota at Phoenix -4.5 O/U 201

Not a lot of information available on Minnesota forward Kevin Love and his status for tonight's game at Phoenix. Bettors were caught off guard when Love (flu) was a late scratch last night against the Lakers. The Timberwolves lost 104-85. With tomorrow off, perhaps Love will sit out another game but given the inconsistent nature of the NBA's injury information this season, he’s a legitimate question mark.

NBA Handicapping: Miami Heat tighten the screws on defense

Miami -5 at Portland O/U 196.5

The Miami Heat come in out of the All-Star break playing some pretty solid defense. After losing to Orland 102-89 on February 8, the Heat have won eight straight (7-1 ATS) and allowed 90.4 ppg. Five of those eight games went under the total.

"We're a dangerous team when we hold teams under their averages, because it allows us to get out and run," LeBron James said. "When we run we're kind of unbeatable because we get up the court so fast."

UPDATE

A few reports saying Kobe Bryant has been in theory cleared to play tonight. He passed the initial post-concussion tests and got in a little work at practice. He is however still listed as questionable.
