NBA Handicapping: San Antonio's Parker out, Duncan may rest vs. Brooklyn

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Antonio -6.5 at Brooklyn O/U 193

Bettors should keep an eye out for who is playing/resting/injured for the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs won a wild double overtime affair last night in Washington. Tony Parker tweaked his back and has been ruled out. Tim Duncan played 40 minutes and may sit.

NBA Handicapping: Woeful Cleveland Cavaliers asked to win by margin

UPDATE

LA Lakers at Cleveland -7 O/U 208

Checking in on our favorite crappy NBA team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Earlier this week we linked to an article that had Luol Deng quoted as saying the team was a "mess." While that statement is almost assuredly accurate, Deng claims it didn’t come from his mouth. It was however confirmed that Dion Waiters was booted from practice. As for tonight's game, Anderson Varejao is expected to start after coming off the bench in Monday's 124-107 loss at Dallas. The Cavs are in a rare and not-very-profitable situation of laying points: 8-8 SU, 4-12 ATS Read more

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards playing defense and covering pointspreads

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Antonio -1 at Washington O/U 194.5

The Washington Wizards are playing their best basketball of the season with four straight pointspread covers including outright wins over Portland, Oklahoma City, and Golden State. The defense in particular has been stellar as they held those three teams to 85.3 ppg. All three contests were lined over 200 and went under the total. Tonight's game against the Spurs opened 195.5 and was bet down to 194.5.

"I feel like earlier in the season we were playing half games, especially on the defensive end," Ariza said in the locker room Monday night. "We weren’t locked in. We weren’t following our game plan and we weren’t playing for each other defensively. Tonight, the night before, we’ve been doing it."

Your 2014 Cleveland Cavaliers...who are on a 2-9 ATS slide and lost their last two games by a combined 45 points.

As Deng recently told one close friend, “the stuff going on in practice would never be tolerated by the coaching staff or the front office back in Chicago. It’s a mess."

There is no accountability, as Dion Waiters found out when he was kicked out of practice last week but still got his usual minutes against the Knicks. Brown isn’t getting much help from GM Chris Grant, who is expected to be fired at season’s end because of the losing and problems in the locker room.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Toronto Raptors at Denver Nuggets

Toronto +2 at Denver O/U 205
Recommendation: Toronto

The Raptors continue to get the job done, while boasting the third best record in the Eastern Conference. However, on closer examination they’ve played better than their overall 24-21 record would indicate. In fact, over their last 25 games the Raptors show a 17-8 record, which directly correlates to their trade of Rudy Gay. The Raptors have succeeded because their defense now features a fair amount of toughness. Of course, strong chemistry, ball movement, and unselfish play also have contributed to their up-tick in play. Point guard Kyle Lowry has lead the way and I expect the savvy guard to play with an extra chip on his shoulder tonight. Lowry was snubbed from All-Star team and there’s no question he’s playing at an All-Star level. Meanwhile, he’ll own all the advantages at the point guard spot tonight as the Nuggets figure to be without their two point guards. Nate Robinson is definitely out with a possible Read more

NBA Handicapping: Style, coach continue to hamper Philadelphia 76ers

01.31.2014     08:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It has been a mess of a season for the Philadelphia 76ers. They're young, don't have much talent, and play for a coach who is insistent on playing at a breakneck pace. Head coach Brett Brown has talked all season about playing better defense but he gives the 76ers little to no chance to succeed considering that amount of possessions that are played. Philly's current pace is 102.1 – if that holds, they'll be the first team to average above 100 for a season since the 2009-10 Golden State Warriors who finished 30 games under .500 (they did rack up an impressive 47-35 ATS record). Philly though has not had success against the spread (19-27 ATS) and 46 games into the season, Brown admitted that his style has essentially backfired. Note that Philadelphia's propensity for "overs" as cooled considerably with eight "unders" in its last 10 games. They're still coughing up 100+ on a routine basis but the team is clearly worn down and the offense has suffered (95.2 ppg last 10; 101.2 ppg seasonal).

NBA Handicapper Free Play: San Antonio Spurs at Atlanta Hawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Antonio at Atlanta +5.5 O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Atlanta

The Spurs have a host of under-the-radar injuries that leave them vulnerable in the road favorite’s role tonight.  Danny Green won’t affect a pointspread by even a half point, but when he’s not available, the Spurs three point shooting takes a big hit.

Tiago Splitter doesn’t affect a pointspread either, but when he’s not healthy, the Spurs really miss their best low post player off the bench.  And Kawhi Leonard’s absence doesn’t affect the pointspread in any meaningful way, but when he’s out, the Spurs really miss his defense and passing abilities.

All three guys are out for San Antonio tonight.  And point guard Tony Parker isn’t healthy either, dealing with the lingering effects of a badly bruised shin. That’s bad news against the Hawks, a team the Spurs have struggled to beat in recent meetings.  In fact each of the last two Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Dallas Mavericks at Brooklyn Nets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Brooklyn -2 O/U 200
Recommendation: Brooklyn

Brooklyn continues to hit its stride winning and covering the pointspread in 8 of its last 9 games. Defense has been the catalyst for the Nets as over the nine games they’ve held the opposition to 42.6% shooting, and 92 points per game. In comparison the Nets started the campaign 10-21, while allowing 46% shooting and 102.4 points per game. In addition, they just got back All-Star point guard Deron Williams who missed the prior five games. Williams has looked strong coming off the bench, while giving the Nets a dose of energy. Realistically, the Nets really only need to break into the top six of the Eastern Conference for playoff positioning in order to avoid Miami and Indiana in the first round. Meanwhile, the Mavericks continue to boast a solid 25-19 record, as they’ve largely tred to outscore the opposition on a nightly basis. As a result they are a bottom 10 defensive team with the majority of their roster is littered Read more

NBA Handicapping: San Antonio Spurs prepare for life on the highway

01.24.2014     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The San Antonio Spurs are about to embark on their annual "Rodeo Road Trip" where they'll play 12 of 14 on the road starting tonight in Atlanta.

"I'm disappointed for the team, because this is a time when we always try to make hay," Popovich said. "Historically, that 'Rodeo Road Trip,' that time before, during and after the All-Star break has always been good for us. We've got a lot of away games. It's a great time to come together and get the bunker mentality, and all that trade crap. But it works for us. So this road trip, and the one right after it, you'd like to be at full strength for that because it has been important for us getting momentum for the season. So I'm disappointed for them.

"But secondly, I'm strangely excited about playing the other guys and watching them fill in. I think it steps up the energy a little bit, because your back's against the wall. You just look at it a different way. That's kind of exciting."
