Sacramento at Memphis -5.5 O/U 200

The Memphis Grizzlies play host to the Sacramento Kings tonight which could well bring into play one of the Grizzlies’ best profiles. Check out these results mined from the database: When Memphis scores 100 or more points they are 55-7 (89%) straight up since the start of the 2011 season. They clock in at a hefty 47-15 (76%) against the spread in that sample. But perhaps the most eye popping figure of the bunch is their totals which have gone over at a 92% clip (56-5-1) when they score 100 or more!

Compare that to the rest of the league and you’ll see Memphis outperforms them in every facet. The league comes in at 72% straight up, 69% against the spread clip while going over at a 79% rate.
Sacramento has made some roster moves and had a little uptick in results of late but they are still a rather poor defensive team that plays at a fast tempo. The Kings give up an average of more than 104 points per game and have allowed at Read more

NBA Handicapping: Atlanta and Brooklyn square off in London this afternoon

OK, so let's try this again. The NBA will attempt to play a game on foreign soil for the second time this season – Minnesota vs. San Antonio was canceled due to smoke inside Mexico City Arena. The Brooklyn Nets will take on the Atlanta Hawks in London at the O2 Arena. Travel and rest shouldn't be an issue as the Nets haven't played since January 11 while the Hawks last played January 12. Note that the game starts at noon PT.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Clippers

Dallas +4.5 at LA Clippers O/U 208
Recommendation: Dallas

From a pointspread perspective, the Dallas Mavericks have played much better on the road (12-7 ATS) than they have at home (9-11 ATS) for extended stretches this season.  They’ve been good underdogs as well, cashing at a 60% clip for the year when catching three points or more.

And the Mavs absolutely have this game circled after blowing a late lead against the Clippers when these two teams met in Dallas just two weeks ago.  Dallas led by six with less than five minutes to play before a 16-2 Clippers run turned victory into defeat in a game where the Mavs hung 70 by halftime.

Mavs guard Monta Ellis talking about the rematch: “I think our mindset is different heading into this game on a three game winning streak.”  And with Dallas getting solid production off the bench from the likes of Vince Carter and Wayne Ellington, this Ellis quote is worth mentioning as well: “If they (the bench) continue to keep that up, we can make a run.”

The Clippers are in a classic flat spot here.  They absolutely annihilated their Read more

NBA Handicapping: Portland Trail Blazers may use more zone defense

01.15.2014     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Portland is considering using a zone defense due to its spotty play of late (104.8 ppg allowed last 8 games). The Trail Blazers sport the league's 22nd ranked defensive efficiency and have gone over the total in 27 of 37 games. They play host to Cleveland tonight before going on a tough four-game road swing against San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and Oklahoma City.

“I do think the fact that we’ve been together longer, a lot of our man-to-man principles are incorporated into the zone,” Stotts said. “It was much better today than it was in training camp without even having been working on it.”

New York at Charlotte -1 O/U 188

New York's Carmelo Anthony is not pleased out having to play the second of a back-to-back. The Knicks beat the Suns in overtime on Monday and head to Charlotte tonight in the midst of playing 10 games in 16 days. Our database shows that teams playing the second of a back-to-back off an overtime win are 68-117 SU and 75-106-4 ATS.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Orlando Magic at Sacramento Kings

Orlando +7.5 at Sacramento O/U 205.5
Recommendation: Orlando

I can certainly understand why the betting markets have installed the Magic as 7.5-point underdogs in their matchup at Sacramento tonight.  The Magic have the second worst record in the NBA; only Milwaukee’s is worse.  Orlando is 3-14 SU on the highway, and they’ve been blown out in each of the first two games of this grueling West Coast swing.

To make matters worse for Jacques Vaughn’s squad, they’re playing without their lone low post presence, center Nikola Vucevic; the only true center on the roster.  That leaves the likes of Big Baby Davis, Andrew Nicholson and Jason Maxiell to bang with DeMarcus Cousins in the paint; an undersized and under-talented trio.

But for all of those negatives, I have one thing to say: 0-10 ATS.  Sacramento has been favored ten previous times this year.  Their next pointspread cover in this role will be their first.  And just about every team the Kings have been favored against during this remarkable run has a similar story to that of Orlando; teams with flaws, Read more

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota's Love calls out teammates following loss

01.09.2014     12:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following last night's 104-103 loss to Phoenix, Minnesota's Kevin Love called out his teammates for being...well, not very good teammates. The loss dropped the T-Wolves to 17-18 SU and 19-16 ATS. According to ESPN, they've played the fifth-toughest schedule in the league but have still underachieved with an expected win-loss record of 24-11. Minnesota plays host to Charlotte on Friday and then is on the road for six of its next eight games.

"We can't have two guys sitting at the end of the bench that play good minutes just sitting there and not getting up during timeouts," Love said, referring to the poor body language exhibited by veterans J.J. Barea and Dante Cunningham in the fourth quarter. "We all need to be in this together. That kind of pisses me off. We're supposed to be a team."

Golden State -6 at Brooklyn O/U 198

Golden State is trying to become the first team in NBA history to sweep a road trip of seven or more games as it faces the Nets tonight in Brooklyn. The Warriors have won ten straight overall (7-3 ATS) including six in a row on the highway.

''It's this close so we're going to chase history,'' Jackson said. ''My guys have paid the price and I'm incredibly proud of them.''
