NBA Gambling: Dallas Mavericks Season Over/Under Wins

Dallas Mavericks
Season O/U Wins:
43.5
Recommendation: Under

The Dallas Mavericks were hoping to land a franchise player in the offseason, and in the end they got Monta Ellis.  Like most teams, the Mavs understand that to in order to win an NBA Championship you need a franchise player and they made their roster interchangeable to chase those types of players.  However, when they didn’t land the big fish, the Mavs were left scrambling, and ended up with makeshift veterans like Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert, and Ellis.  The major dilemma this team faces will be on defense.  Head coach Rick Carlisle is known as a defensive coach, but he’ll face an uphill with Ellis, Calderon, Vince Carter, and Dirk Nowitzki all sieve-like defenders.  No question this is a bottom-tier stop unit.

Offensively the Mavericks will score their fair share of points; however it could take time to mesh with so many new faces.  Having Ellis on your team makes efficiency on both ends of the court a battle at times.  Finally, it’s a team with age.  Nowitzki is 35 years old and has dealt with Read more

NBA Handicapping: Sacramento learning how to play under new head coach

10.30.2013     01:19 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good read on Sacramento Kings first-year head coach Michael Malone.

“It’s very clear,” Kings point guard Isaiah Thomas said of the concepts being taught by Malone and the new coaching staff.  ”I mean if you mess up on something, coach is gonna be on you until you correct yourself.”

“Not to put any bad things on the coaches in the previous years, but we kind of didn’t nail that down,” Thomas said. “I mean if somebody messed up, it was kind of like ‘Ok, on to the next play.’  But this year, it’s just they’re teaching, teaching, teaching and we’re going into scrimmaging and we work on it.”

“Like I said, we’re still in the process of learning,” Cousins said.  ”But just our basic set, and that’s something that was never there before, just that alone is taking us to another level.  I mean, (I’m) not saying we’re gonna be a championship team.  (But)

NBA Handicapping: ESPN decides to show up at the Philadelphia 76ers' Tankfest

10.29.2013     02:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's not a good sign when prior to start of the regular season, ESPN has an article on its front page talking about your ridiculously low season over/under wins number and the likelihood of a total tank job.

"They've pretty much made it known in Philadelphia they're trying to get the No. 1 pick for Andrew Wiggins and not holding back," Sherman said. "Teams try for the draft pick sometimes late in the season, but they're basically doing it the whole season."

The one about the New York Knicks, copious amounts of coke, and point shaving

09.16.2013     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you lived in New York City during the 80's there's a good chance you either used coke or knew someone who did. But what's interesting is that the dude providing you or your acquaintance with recreational drugs may have also been a big sports bettor. The type of drug dealer/sports bettor who supplied the local NBA team with product and “suggestions” on how to get said product at a discounted rate.

“Over . . . the last two months, all three [players] have given . . . tips on when to bet the Knicks to lose. This has occurred seven times and six of the tips were good,” according to FBI files citing two unnamed “sources.”

“So many people say it’s impossible to fix a game because guys are paid so much money,” Tuohy told The Post. “But you can see how easily they can get hooked on some drug, be gambling themselves and get in deep with a bookie.”

In Stat Evaluations, Be a Judge, Not a Lawyer

I’ve touched on this periodically over the years, often in throwaway comments when I’m whining about something I just saw or read. I was thinking it was time to go into the topic again because we have so many new readers thanks to twitter (@jefffogle) and word-of-mouth. Then, a PERFECT example jumped out at me in something I was reading at Grantland.

There’s an article up this weekend about the Philadelphia 76ers. Author Ben Detrick said this about the role new general manager Sam Hinkie might have played in the development of point guard Jrue Holiday:

“When Hinkie took the reins, some thought he could help transform Holiday into the Sixers’ version of James Harden. Both are big guards with lightning-quick first steps, equally capable Read more

NBA Gambling News: LeBron and the Heat +250 to win next year's title

06.21.2013     11:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone's favorite stat nerd Nate Silver says LeBron James has two more NBA Championships left in him. And not even 24 hour removed from their second straight title, the Miami Heat are even money to win the Eastern Conference and +250 to three-peat according to The Greek.

What seems safe to say is that you wouldn’t want to bet on James at even money. There are just too many things that can go wrong with a player’s career as he ages: injury or illness, early retirement, bad teammates or bad luck.

Even a team as strong as this year’s Heat began the season with only about a 30 percent chance of winning the title, according to the Las Vegas odds. That percentage happens to roughly match the historical likelihood of an N.B.A. team repeating as champion, which is 33 percent.
