NBA Playoff Handicapping: Clippers have hands full vs. Popovich and Spurs

05.14.2012     02:17 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The opening round of the NBA Playoffs is already in the history books, and we’ve got some compelling matchups as Round 2 begins.  Let’s take a whirlwind tour around the NBA, examining some of the prevailing issues for each series from a betting perspective.

The Spurs-Clippers series has drawn a lot of attention in handicapping circles for one reason – a complete coaching mismatch.  San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich is a tactical genius, plain and simple, earning another NBA Coach of the Year award in 2012.  His veteran stars – Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan – all buy into what he is preaching 110%.  Parker, in particular, is as close to a head coach on the floor as you’ll find in the NBA these days.
Popovich certainly recognized the effect of his veteran leaders on their teammates. “Every NBA team had the same problem as far as developing rookies, bringing in free agents, rounding out the team. Leadership here from Tony, Manu and Tim has been spectacular. They set the tone and were very committed.”

NBA Betting Trend Update: San Antonio Spurs looks to close out series vs. Utah

UPDATE

San Antonio -7.5 at Utah O/U 199.5

Our NBA Playoff betting trend is in play tonight with the San Antonio Spurs looking for the 4-0 sweep vs. Utah. Since 2003, teams up 3-0 in the 1st Round are 23-11 SU, 20-14-3 ATS in Game 4. Last week there were two of these situations with Oklahoma City posting the spread covering win over Dallas and Miami losing outright to New York.

Recommendation: First Half Under 102

Sunday’s NBA Playoffs tips-off with an interesting noon start time between Utah and San Antonio. Of course this will also equal an 11 am tip for the Mountain Time Zone based Jazz.  I expect both teams to slowly get accustom to playoff basketball, while a very sloppy first half could be on the docket.  The Spurs were downright explosive offensively throughout much of the campaign, while all eight of their games went OVER the total to close the season.  However, it’s important to remember this is now a completely different season and the Spurs understand they’ll need to step it up defensively in the postseason.  Keep in mind, over the Spurs’ last eight games they only played just one playoff team.  In addition, the Spurs trended UNDER the total on their home floor in the first half this season with 13 OVERS and 20 UNDERS.  Meanwhile, the Jazz will focus on pounding the ball down low, while slowing the tempo in this series.  The Spurs can be thin along Read more

NBA Gambling: Spurs remember last year's injury to Ginobli

San Antonio at Phoenix -2.5 O/U 205.5

Last season, with the top seed in the Western Conference locked up, San Antonio's Manu Ginobli got hurt in what was essentially a meaningless regular season game and missed Game 1 of the playoffs. The Spurs lost that game to Memphis and the eighth seeded Grizzlies went on to win the series 4-2. Similar situation tonight against Phoenix with little to nothing to play – except the top record in the league and home court throughout the playoffs. According to Sports Options, is looks as if Popovich won't risk another snafu with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker all listed as "doubtful" due to rest. The Suns meanwhile are unlikely to put much emphasis on this game after being officially eliminated from the postseason following last night's loss at Utah.

NBA Gambling Notes: Chicago Bulls clinch top seed in the East

Chicago at Indiana

Miami's loss to Boston last night helped the Chicago Bulls clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are tied with San Antonio (and own the tiebreaker) for the best record in the league with two games to play.

"We’d like to have home court all the way throughout," Carlos Boozer said. "If we have a Game 7, we’d like to have it in our building. We believe in ourselves. We’re confident what we can do."

"We don’t want to jump to the playoffs now," Thibodeau said. "We want to get ready for Indiana, have a good walkthrough, go step-by-step. That’s been our approach all year and we don’t want to change that. Home court doesn’t guarantee anything. You still have to play well."

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s not unusual for a middle-of-the-pack baseball team to get hot at the right time and carry that momentum all the way to a World Series title, like the St. Louis Cardinals did last October. In the NFL, we’ve seen similar situations out of Wild Card teams that get hot at the right time and carry that momentum all the way to a Super Bowl victory, like the Giants and Packers have done over the past two seasons. In the NHL, regular season results mean even less – last years’ Stanley Cup win from the no. 3 seed Boston Bruins was no shocker when looking at historical data from the past 20 years.

The NBA is different. Talent and playoff experience, not momentum, tend to produce winning results in these physical, grueling seven game playoff series. Only one true longshot, the sixth seed Houston Rockets, has won a title in the last 30 years, and the Rockets were the defending champs at the time; not a true longshot per se. When the third seed Mavericks won the title last year, it was considered to be a major shocker. Bottom line: the best NBA teams in the regular season tend to be the best NBA teams in the postseason, as long as they stay Read more

Amazing that the San Antonio Spurs went a perfect 6-0 straight up and 5-1 against the spread in their six back-to-back-to-back situations this season. The Spurs currently lead Oklahoma City by a 0.5 game for the top seed in the Western Conference with five games remaining.

NBA Betting Trend Update: Kobe out, Lakers continue struggles against the spread

04.11.2012     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Without or without Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles just can’t seem to cover a pointspread these days with its current run now at 2-13 ATS. Bryant is listed as "out" for tonight's game at San Antonio. While the Lakers have been a pointspread disaster (22-35-1 YTD), the Spurs have somehow produced the best ATS record in the league at 34-19-2. Amazing we you consider head coach Gregg Popovich’s willingness to wave the white flag in certain spots so his veterans can rest.

NBA Betting Alert: San Antonio's Duncan, Parker and Parker could sit vs. Jazz

04.09.2012     10:26 AM     Printer Friendly
San Antonio at Utah -1.5 O/U 208.5

According to Sports Options, San Antonio's Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli are questionable for tonight's game at Utah. The Spurs beat the Jazz at home last night 114-104. San Antonio opened tonight's game as a 3.5-point favorite. Back in February, the Spurs were in the midst of an 11-game winning streak but in a back-to-back spot at Portland, Gregg Popovich sat Duncan and Parker (Ginobli was already hurt). The Spurs lost 137-97.
